Sega keeps thinking that you could get a good storyline out of an anthropomorphic hedgehog running across a level. So they've published a canon "Bible". And it reads like fan-fiction.

God I hate when they give backstory's to character's who's personalities are as 2d as they are. Is anyone really interested enough in Sonic to read a fictional 13 page biography on him?

Still it's better than fan-fiction since there was no weird romance story involved

I think that Sonic ran out of juice around 2003-2004; although I heard some good things about Sonic and the Secret Rings. I think it is time for them to revive Alex Kidd and retire the blue hedgehog. The only redeeming value about the new Sonic games is the music.

And even the music is mostly generic rock music.

As long as DeviantArt exists, I don't think Sonic is in any danger of being retired in the future. Unfortunately.

When I was a kid I ordered Sonic the Hedgehog books from the scholastic book catalog.

Well for a kid that's not a big deal.

I dunno maybe it's just me but to me Sonic was a hedgehog, he did spins, destroyed robot crabs and collected golden rings, that was enough

That said, I think Sonic is genuinely a great franchise but was given a horrendous direction, most likely due to the fanbase. Sonic Adventure 2 on the Dreamcast was pretty much the last good game that came out. Let's not even mention the awesome 2D games. Only the Lord knows how many hours I dumped into the Sonic games back on the Sega Genesis...

Sonic is a zombie now :(

Ya know I'm kind of proud that I derailed this thread so bad and all, but really everything that can be said here has probably been said.

I know we all used to love it, but it's time to accept that the franchise is dead. Move on. There's no shortage of better games out there.
