Looking for constructive critique. This is one of several concepts I've done for a short animated feature I'm doing in my spare time. The drawings were done using prismacolor on bristol, scanned and then collaged in photoshop.
It's this last step that I need the most advice on. But I'd like to hear remarks on the piece in general.

From the short story: "Once there was a warlord, who loved not gold, nor power, nor woman nor anything so much as he did war. His thirst for violence could not be slaked and his reign of chaos spread like wildfire. "
I went with the flag, to show his position instead of the helm. One thing about the character is that he loves nothing so much as he does war: not power, not fame, not fortune.
He lives simply for the ecstacy of combat.
Thusly his armor lacks ornamentation. His sword is cleaned only when sharpening it necessitates, and his helm is more function than fashion.
Even the standard on his banner is simple, showing his lack of concern for all things aesthetic.
Conversely the next character I'm concepting is a very regal but evil king, adorned from head to toe in signs of rule and authority.

the anotomy on the waist is off and the waist is way to thin. plus the upper body is to big, and with the armor on it makes the legs appear way to small

Thanks for the comments all. Always nice to get some feedback.
Here's what it looked like before I added the pattern backdrop:

And here's just the 3-quarters view of the armor detail:

I guess ultimately since this is merely concept art, it's more of a tool than a final product. But still, I do want it to look presentable, so i was playing around with making it look a bit like it was on old parchment (going for the "Fairytale" motiff).

Since the shoulder mass has been brought up in two seperate forums now, I started playing around with the armor a bit. At first I brought in the armor at the waste and shoulders a bit...

This method forced me to rework the chest plate configuartion too...
But I felt like the result was slightly less majestic and definately not awe-inspiring nor nearly intimidating enough.
So I decided to stick with the tapered waste, but pull the shoulders back out.

looks good in parts, but play around with the composition more... you're doing a montage.. one of the main keys to a successful montage is having one element much larger than the other ones... taking up about 40% or so.. if you want inspiration on montages, check out Bob Peak or Drew Struzan, or go here: http://graphiccollectibles.com/shopping/iaindex.php3
good luck
