*de-lurks* Uh. Hi. Been lurking for a while, but this topic was too cool to pass up.
If you're familiar with Roman mythology, Aphrodite was actually pretty nasty when she thought her beauty was being challeneged - that's what inspired this sketch.

:) I acually read a few lines on the subject today, WooooH. It seems that aphrodite was "born" in in the sea, aphros (sea foam). I know she looks more like a god of death than love, but... thats that!
cheers :chug:

Carnifex, good call on posting that. Thanks.
Okay guys, if you want to make major points with your lady friends (girlf friend, fiance, wife, mistress, whatever) use them as a model.

What about us girls? I don't think I'll earn any points by drawing myself in the mirror. No one wants to see THAT. ;)

@Oregano: You're right. Too bad I ain't got none at the moment. I just wish the lady in my pic were my GF. *OMG* *almost fades*
But be sure not the mention the Aphrodite being evil part Wundergeek was talking about.
@Wundergeek: Nice one you got there, I like the looks and the apple.
@scumworks Cool atmosphere. Does look like a death goddess, but cannot death be beautiful at times? :evilbat:
@NoUseFrAName: Give us some color! I like the sketch.
@ Sabre: Nicely done. Esp like the hair.
@Commander Obvious: Wow, I really like the lighting and rendering of that one. Has nice depth.
So, without much further ado, here be mine version of Aphrodite. Photo ref used and I would like to go over some areas a little more. Will maybe do that later.

1 - don't be so hard on yourself. Do a portrait, and don't aplogize for it.
2 -If you are uncomfortable doing a self-portrait, break the stereotype - ask a female friend to model for you.
3 - today's does seem to be particularly slated toward the young hormone driven male, doesn't it?
@Oregano: You're right. Too bad I ain't got none at the moment.
What a better opportunity to get one. You need a model for Aphrodite. Go find a woman to model for you (who cares that you already submitted a work?)
Get to drawing drawing people. Raise the bar. do good work

Way ahead of ya bro, but I figured I'd have to make a new one for this sort of thing. Here's my first Venus painting from earlier this year. This is NOT for DSG, it is something I did a long while ago.

That's my girlfriend (and a guitar I wish I owned), well, the face anyway. She didn't pose for me, just e-mailed me some face reference pictures not too long after we started dating.

Sweet one Xpressions...and as per your request, I've thrown down some colour.
Tried doing it in photoshop as opposed to painter, and I found that it was a heckuvalot easier.....
I'm new to using a tablet...maybe I should check out the Painter help forum....
anyways, enough talk, more rock:

Looked it up and some of Aphrodite's associated animals are the dolphin and swan. Tried to include those attributes.

I did a black and white photographic series on the female figure. But I don't know if I can post them since they are photographs. Can you post a photograph you created?
Until then here's my unfinished entry.

Well, I'm not the one who makes the rules, but here's my hunch ... since this is called the daily SKETCH group, I'd imagine photographs wouldn't fit. Also, work is supposed to be done specifically for this topic, so if you took these photos prior to today's topic being announced, it doesn't really fit as a DSG submission.
I'm sure one of the higher-ups will correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh ya, and I think I just found my pick up line for the ladies tonight! Don't think anyone will model for me, but that's gonna be my objective for the night! God Bless alchool :chug: Wish me luck !

The reason for the lack of shading is that I will get around to colouring it in photoshop (but not tonight as it's already 3am)
HB pencil on xerox paper, A4, about 2 hours (the hair was a bitch!)

You know, I almost didn't do todays entry, a combo of being tired and not knowing what to do was the culprit. I am glad I went ahead and did it.
Referenced from Aphrodite of Arles by Praxiteles, a Greek sculptor (400-300 B.C.). Yeah, I have no idea who that is...

Shucks!! I was really excited about this topic and had grand plans involving lots of swirly drapery and clouds and little chubby babies.... Unfortunately I ended up with only about 15 minutes to sketch, which was then interrupted half way through. I hope I can find time to color this and develop it some more tomorrow. ;)

Just in time! Whew!
The Aphrodite of myth was pretty mean...more about deisre than love. Self-absorbed and destructive...
I'd love to make this more, but you get the sense of it from the sketch.

@Redder: Did you do that one with trad. watercolor?

Thanks Dave,
for you information in my development scribble for this the water went up her legs which had more of a feeling of her 'forming' out of the water foam, this didn't work so well in this image but I will probably re-visit this when I colour it.
looks like I'll have my work cut out today though for the '296-tomb thingie' I'm not so good with the architecture!
maybe I'll colour Aphrodite tomorrow.
I absolutely love the colour work on yours though, the legs in particular are amazing, nicely done sir!
I was impressed by many of the posts today, particularly: Redder's stylistic take,
commander obvious's colouring (and shading on the earlier post!)

phantom_head i coloured your aphrodite. nice practice. turned into a bronze statue :) i noticed a few things. the head & neck seem a little off. the lips and nose are too far to the right. the lips should be a little lower. the left breast is too far left. the hips are very eneven. colouring is a matter of defining planes and how much light falls on it.

Spent about an hour and a half having fun with some colors. I took out the babies near the end because I didn't have time to develop them. :( :p I picture her kind of floating above the world watching couples and influencing their feelings, she's probably planting the seed of life in someone's womb here.
