Concept: Ligrell
Ligrell inhabit the vast plains and lowlands of Valentoras in large herds. The local humanoids capture them and train them from birth to serve as forms of high speed transport. The leg structure of the Ligrell allows for a driving force, front and back, with every stride making the creature capable of reaching speeds of up to one hundred miles per hour, unlaiden. Ligrell come in many different colours, seemingly unrelated to breeding, some say there was a legendary Ligrell breeder who found a way of producing a breed of Ligrell which out paced any other to have lived before. The legend has it that the breed was of a specific colour, knowledge of which has long been lost. Golden... perhaps?

Concept: Dune Dancer
Called the Dune Dancers, these six legged creatures which looks like a weird mix of bird and camel, are one of the few remaining species of what's left of the planet Earth after its 4th World War. Heeding the use of biological warfare and Man's constant struggle for power, these creatures are probable products of the war that razed on for decades and are now left to wander the sand dunes that replaced the once blue planet. The remaining human populace have neither the technology or the resources to study these timid creatures but have ascertained that their capacity to survive the harsh environment without much sustenance are valuable traits that makes for a convenient mode of transportation.

Concept: Greel Runner
Found on the planet Mordiv, these six legged beasts are prized by thieves and outlaws throughout the galaxy for their breakneck speed and agility. It is said that a Greel runner can even outrun a speeder in the right conditions and in some cases jump up to 30 feet on their four powerful hind legs.
A peaceful and docile species, the Runners have evolved this adaptation to escape the many predators who fly and run pretty fast on their home planet. Anyone lucky enough to have caught one is said to be a "Wealthy, prosperous and quick son of a bitch".
At least that's what I heard......

Concept: Hexapodiraptor gliesiensis
When Gliese 581 and its planetary system were discovered in 2007, mankind soon excluded it from the list of possible habitats of alien lifeforms. But in 2226, after having managed to completely devastate earth, a first starship packed with humans landed on Gliese 581d. It's a small planet near the outer edge of the habitable zone and there was a glimpse of hope to make it a new home.
And obviously mankind had been wrong: The rocky landscape with its plenty of damp caves was infested with a large variety of lifeforms, most of which were rather small and slimy but at least edible. These were also the prey of Hexapodiraptor gliesiensis, the tallest and highest developed spieces. The large poikilothermic biests hunted the caves at night and wandered the large deserts during the day, to regain power. The energy is stored in bulgy muscle-like lumps directly under the skin.
It soon became clear (to both Hexapodiraptor and the settlers) that human meat was a great new source of energy. Even the animal company was acceptable and so most of the brought in straying dogs and cats ended their lives in the five stomachs of Hexapodiraptor gliesiensis, which during the day is able to to accelerate up to 160 mph.
Still the settlers maintained their attitude to enslave nature and soon took hold of Hexapodiraptor, to use it's incredible muscular power to explore the planet. In order not be devoured instantly, they built strong cockpit-like cages to attach them on Hexapodiraptor's back. Since the cearures were never to be tamed or steered, a powerful engine had to be installed to control the mount. This way the settlers could eventually built up a small colony.
They lived (more or less) happily until the X'cthera civilazition (who eventually had managed to completely destroy their homeplanet) landet on Gliese 581d, to enslave both the first settlers and Hexapodiraptor gliesiensis.

Concept: Umghalé

After the Great Upheaval on Oord III, it became nearly impossible for human settlers to fuel their technological wonders, and thus they turned to the local fauna in the ways of the ancient Earth Tribes. Umghalé are hardy creatures, being found in the mountainous regions of the Eastern continent during the dry months, and making their way back to the flatlands as the rains descend from the pole. They use their claws to unearth insects, tubers, and small rodents, but will eat almost anything that they can chew.

Umghalé are highly intelligent and loyal, and need no fences once they have created a bond with a human. Old stories tell of mothers during the Second Egress who would tie the baskets of their infants onto the backs of Umghalé so that the babies would be soothed by the undulating gait, and thus not draw the attention of nearby predators. Umghalé can pull nearly five times their own weight, and can carry multiple humans on their backs.

Concept: Chynox

A highly domesticated creature, the plant eating Chynox has become the common mode of travel across the planet planet of Daycor. Its long curved horns make for perfect controls to pilot the quick moving beast, and with its middle legs bound by strapping, they make comfortable foot rests.

Because of the extend distances that the Chynox are required to cover, most are fitted with some sort of liquid feeding tubes.

Voted for
lkjhgfdsa: Simply liked it most!
Other favorites were the works of
CyberMonkeytron3000: Really cool design. The steering antlers are great!
Scorge: Especially the frog is fun! :teeth:
Mara644: That thing looks soo ill-natured. Great expression!
Wiggers: Gloriously barbarian!

I voted for lkjhgfdsa because it's not a "six-legged horse" but something totally different and inventive, I liked it.

I also liked Wiggers' and Scorge's, but the "future" part is less visible. A lot of us have did "post-apocalyptic" instead (me too).

I like the retro look of Mara644's one, it remind me science fiction of the seventies, but the creature only uses 4 legs.

Had to give my vote to dwinbotp, lkjhgfdsa's just seemed like more of a transport than steed. :p

Went with Cybermonkeytron. The design is excellent. It's a plausible functional concept but it has just enough weirdness, like the eyes on the chin, to make it something new. Also very well rendered, very clean. I really enjoy the chair design. It's simple but it looks like it was designed to fit on the creature instead of constructed and then added to the creature. If that makes sense. It was a really hard decision. I also though Scorge's creature was awesome. Also big ups to Wiggers. The anatomy is well done, he looks very solid. I can actually see the weight of the creature. Good job all.

i had to give my vote for dwinbotp, after reading thru all the stuff posted on the wips thread it seemed that most of the other entries seemed to follow suit after the camel-like steed dwinbotp swiftly produced onwards. Although I also love ikjhgfdsa"s insect take , it doesn't quite suit the "steed" part of the brief to me. I also found cybermonkeytron's design quite original, just not too realistic in my eyes. All very good entries, congrats guys for doing a job well done for a tough topic! :D

Usually like to take the time to give everyone comments, but alas I'm just about out of that at the moment.
Jerik: What a great representation of power and color. I could look at this thing all day. You got my vote.
Other mentionables:
Cybermonkeytron, lkjhgfdsa, Mara644, Wiggers and Skullbeast.
Great round everyone. Some of you are starting to scare me with the levels of improvement. Keep it up!
