Round #140
Topic:
Six Legged Steed from the Future!
Creature Description: Six Legged Steed from the Future! Design a new, six legged alien creature from the future that can be ridden by a humanoid or other simillarly shaped character. For this round you MAY include the rider and accessories necessary for riding (saddle, straps, etc). However, the focus in your piece MUST be the creature. Remember, CREATURES are members of a species. Not individuals. I'm most interested in seeing some interesting anatomy solutions. You concept/story is important, but what I am really after is seeing folks push their skills rendering anatomy, bone, muscle, balance, weight, proportion and so forth.
Deadline:
Wednesday, 22 April 2009
note: The deadline won't be EXACTLY after a week...it can last up to 24 hours more, i am human and have to work also, you know ;)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to post
In this thread you can post all wips, questions, comments etc
However if you are done with your entry, post the final image in the following thread.

might do this, i'm feeling creatures more than characters, very intimidating:) scary to post anything:( one question: if it's from future, will there be metal parts on the creature? and happy birthday to you sir, love your works on deviantart:)

Hey lwhuang: Thanks for the b-day wishes and the looky on DA. It always seems to be the easiest way to show folks the newest work, even with a regular website...
Scary? I remember that feeling of being intimidated with my first posts. Just post anyway. As George Clooney's Army captian character states in the movie Three Kings : "You do the thing you're afraid of, and then you get the courage. Should be the other way around, but it's not." Just grab that COW by the horns and show her who is boss. :)
Metal parts on the creature. Good point. Let's steer clear of cybernetic attachments and implants that don't serve a purpose other than looking cool. I want a cool alien. If the accessories required to make it a 'steed' (something one can ride) look a little Borg-ish, I'll allow it. But let's not try things like making two of the six legs robotic additions or anything. I want to see cool looking six legged aliens that are ridden by humanoids.

This new round brings me joy. :D
I was just fantasizing about something like this in math class the other day, how odd. You must be telepathic, MJ. Thats the only plausible explanation.

LOL. I tend to write up little art briefs and save them away several at a time, and then pull from that.
What monster am I thinking of now, Sperling? ;)

I'm thinking horse / insect, six legged instantly makes me think bug. :D
Can my final be accepted if it's just on paper, then scanned?
Hmmmm, loads of ideas for this week, gotta go find my sketchpad!

April 16th, 2009, 07:13 PM
Well this is my thought for it so far. I figure its front legs would be for stablization and movement at low speeds on steep/slippery surfaces due to them being able to double as hands. So, more of a dangerous terrain kind of critter. :D I think it needs a bit more of an alien feeling to it though, so will have to work on that...

Onyx Serpent, I like that idea of the front legs being for more specific movement. I was thinking along the lines of a grasshopper for one of my ideas. Where the back legs are for high speed, explosive movement whereas the front are for more intricate, controlled movement.

Hi, this may sound like a stupid question, but I was wondering, do you mean steed as of this :mod: (horse). or more like a working animal (like a donkey that pulls a wagon), because I looked for it on the internet and I saw this two meanings (I am not a native english speaker :P ).
And by the way, happy birthday Michael Jaecks .

Pantro Steed as in something you ride.
Choob: Scanned paper entries are just fine. But quality is key. Spend time developing and rendering your idea.
MoHog: Right now it looks almost like a cross between a fiddler crab and an elephant. Interesting direction.

since its from the future are we allowed robotic limbs
e.g. a 4 legged creature with 2 robotic limbs attached?
if not i'l hav to work around the implausibility of my idea

Here is my WIP
http://i42.tinypic.com/2lb7nq.jpg
I hope I'm not doing anything against the rules since their more like arms than legs, but I figured with that many legs you'd probably be going on more surfaces than just the ground. When i thought Future, I thought other planets, so pardon if it's not too Techy :P
Also... I'm going to do a lot more tweaking to make it look less Gorilla'ish :P

What, like you want to do an octopus or something? Or in this case a sextapus?
I'm really looking for a six legged alien steed. Creature that can be ridden by a humanoid character.
I realize folks want to think outside the box, but instead... let's try sticking to the topic and thinking outside the box.
Part of the reason why I chose this topic is for the challenge of rendering the anatomy of a creature that has six legs. It's not an easy thing to do really and make it believable. You can't just tack on two extra legs.. you have to think about the ways the muscles in the shoulders with attach to the whole thorax and spine.
Anibawl: Arms really are not legs are they? I know you want to make a climbing creature, but... that's not quite what I had in mind...
Here is a six legged creature I did in 2007 for Ulisses-Spiele's Das Schwarz Auge role playing game... something like this would work. (Those with sharp eyes and long memories might remember that this started as one of my COW 100 thumbs... :) )

well i actually ment a flying "steed" with 6 legs but well if you say that we need to stick to the topic in terms of "steed" as in walking then stick to the topic it is :D
its always good to find out those things cuz well....i was just about to go with that direction and well now i wont ^_^

initial concept, a post apocalyptic steed for an equally devastated Earth, scorching desserts during the day, freezing wasteland at night. The steed is a devolving bird, camel hybrid of sorts, still tinkering on this one. I'll also be adding this as a possible background for the TeamChow thingy since it's gonna be on a similar climate/setting:)

I'm probably over complicating things with this but I'm going for three legs at the front and back instead of three on either side, we'll see what happens, haha.
First sketch just trying to get an idea of what the legs will be like. I've kind of crossed an Ostrich with a Cheetah with the back "ostrich" leg having two elongated toes, the space between which the front one fits when they are both bent towards the centre of the creature. My idea was to make for a super super fast creature by effectively having a front and back driving force with each stride.

Skullbeast, I really like your early abstract shapes, what steps do you take when making those because I'd like to be able to start some of my images like that but I seem to struggle to draw unless I have a predecided idea already in my head.

Here's mine, the legs look a little like hands, so I don't know if it's ok, but it's supposed to be a crawler rather than walker. Those two lines above it's mouth are just guides for the reins.

Really neat sketches all round.
Here's a wip. I had the idea of the movement before the animal: a sort of rocking smooth gait. These two are missing the step in the sequence where the longest leg takes the weight (I've added a little sketch, but I'm not sure if I makes sense to anyone but me :P) A creature born and bred for desert racing. The person would sit in the dip between the neck and hump. The legs look a bit glued on currently, but I like it. I agree with Dwinbotp: sleep needed. *yawn*

Reymus: NIce original concept, needs more texture/detail

Dwinbotp: Wow, you are a quick one. only crit would be the nearest leg at the back dosn't seem to carry the weight quite right.

April 18th, 2009, 04:45 AM
dwinbotp: that came off very well and very quickly. I likey likey. And the name "Dune Dancer" is to awesome for words. I wanna ride one!
Pixie Trick: Nice way to work out the animation of the creature's six-legged gait.
Someone mentioned wings... yes... lets steer clear of that. We all know Pegasus backwards and forwards. We don't need to see him again. Now... if you came up with something that had six wings... that also functioned as legs... like one of those crazy feathered dinosaurs with the weirdo hybrid leg-wing limbs... that I might be into as an interesting design solution. But you'd have to pull it off really well. It would be a pretty big challenge to pull that off right.

Part of my brain my brain keeps telling me this thing has to be "real" while the other part wants it to look cool. So far the literal part is winning.

I'll be damned if this wasn't one of the trickiest anatomy's to figure out, especially running. Going for a old/new west thingy. Some very interesting goings on here so far.
I'll try to get in some feedback
lunascythedragon: I like the bug in the bottom center. Very alien ideas you have there.
onyxserpent: Like it so far. The front "arms?" should probably look a little more like legs so you don't get in trouble with the all powerful wizard of cow. Good start.
Wiggers: Always nice to have you here, hope you can finish. Looks awesome.
Crowsrock: If that's the first sketch, I can't wait to see the second! Lookin' good for an initial idea.
DwinbotP: You are speedy, and good, and fun to watch in action. Good mix of zoology.
Mohog: Is that guy gonna be big? Dig those legs.
ScooterNB: Welcome to COW. I like the idea of multiple people.
Mara644: Killer beastie! Very nice sketch.
Southern: Man you'd better finish, you're already 90% there. Always a fan.
Pixie Trick: Wonderful idea to do the racing type. That was actually my initial idea but I changed it over the course of way too much thought. You should really think about your lighting and values, especially since this scene seems to take place in a very hard light environment.
Reymus: Going strong. Fur looks great.
Michael Morisse: Cool sketches! #s 2 & 3 are my favorites. And I know what you mean about the horse.
G@m: You should've joined a long time ago if you had these skills. I like it!
Skullbeast: I'm really enjoying watching you progress man. I don't know if its your resolution or something else but it's starting to look a little fuzzy. Just remember to find the texture you like, then bring out the highs and lows individually. Keep up the good work.
Smashed Pumpkin: I almost forgot you! Sorry. That reminds me of one of my sketches for the Strange Walker. It was actually very tricky to make it work, in fact I ended up scrapping it and going for something else. I'm looking forward to seeing you pull it off. You can do it!

SkooterNB, yea I use photoshop but I spent ages looking for some fancy brushes hoping they'd improve my painting but I always seem to find myself coming back to the good old Hard Round 9 Pixel brush and increasing/decreasing it's size to fit the situation. I've also used a bit of the Chalk 36 Pixels on this image (you can see it visible at the edges especially under the creatures neck) but that's the extent of the brushes this time.
If you watched the way I paint you'd probably laugh though, I'm pretty sure I'm one of the least efficient painters imaginable and I do really silly things. Earlier today I found myself doing a circuit of my creatures body at 400% zoom erasing a 2pixel thick line of white I managed to attach to him by flattening him onto the background layer.... So the brush stokes you see are just lots of (bad) rendering on a round brush rather than anything nifty with shaped brushes.
But yea, try covering your line drawing completely when you come to block it in. I used to just block my colours in behind my line drawing and then struggle to work through it but i've found I get much more desirable results if I get rid of the lines asap. Afterall lines can't really depict form and most things we draw on here are compositions of form. Think more about the way the light is interacting with a solid form and then what marks you need to make to depict that, rather than simply thinking "i'll draw a leg here" or whatever.

Thanks for the help! If that is with hard brush and chalk, I have to ask the size of your canvas! Also, 100% opacity?
Smashed_Pumpkin
April 19th, 2009, 06:52 PM
I've started working on a canvas 2000 pixels wide and 1300 pixels high. The reason for this is that every 2nd level of zoom on my screen is pixelated for some reason, something to do with the anti-aliasing, but with a canvas that size It fits perfectly on my screen at 50% zoom (one of the good zoom depths for me). I generally work at around 200%, 300% or 400% zoom when rendering but I'll do sketch drawings of all sizes really, and then just blow it up or shrink it to fit the canvas. Working with that cavas size does mean that I halve the size of the image when I save it as a Jpeg but I think most people probably work at higher resolutions to what they post at.
Here's a quick update on how the rendering is going, gonna try hard to get it finished before I go to Italy...
The detail part is at 100% zoom of the primary file.
650883
EDIT: Oh yea, I'm pretty sure the eye is going to change, haha.
Completely forgot you mentioned opacity. I start with 100% opacity for blocking and some shading but then drop it down to 75% for rough blending and then to 30% for finer rendering. I used to drop it lower than that but I've found a higher opacity gives a more satisfying feel and quality of light instead of super smooth transitions which aren't actually common in real life.

Meh. Not happy with any of my ideas this week.
Might try a CHOW, but don't have time.
I'll give tips and feedback here if I can though.

Hey kids. Just checking in with the thread.
I realized today that I had listed the deadline as "Wednesday April 23, 2009." This of course is an error as today is Wednesday April 22nd, 2009.
So lets say the deadline is Thursday April 23rd and I will get the poll up sometime early Friday morning CST.

Wiggers: Love the heads hanging off of there, awesome touch and nice job. =)
didn't realize the deadline was tomorrow for some reason... so trying to go as fast as I can between classes. @.o... any comments appreciated.

wow, this chow is getting really exciting!
AmbientSounds, cool creature with plausible anatomy! only the hair (feathers?) seems a bit attached, maybe that could look more natural.
great wips everyone, have my faves already but let's don't be hasty.
and thanks to Michael Jaecks to extend the deadline, i'm sure it's good for the challenge.

Kabu - Hey Kabu, awesome WIP but, remember they have to be legs not arms, I had to change my initial idea because of that :)

Wow! Nice work everyone.
Here are a few sketches I came up with, not sure what my favorite is yet. Unfortunately, I wont have a final finished in time for the deadline, but plan on finishing it, in my sketchbook thread. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

@anibawl: yeah your right :( .... my idea was: the first four legs(arms) for climbing and the last four for running (the two in the middle are for running and climbing both)
but you are right, that doesnt work very well with the topic
i think i will finished it for fun :)

scorge: looks really great, I love the money flying off, that BAD@$$ bridle, and the colors and textures of the skin... It might just be me, but something about the pose almost suggests that he is sitting on something invisible instead of running. That would honestly be my only gripe. Very cool, esp. the gear. =)
Asettimi: would love to see the finished product! You should link your sketchbook in your signature so ppl don't have to dig for it. I'd be glad to stop by when I have a chance later, the ideas seem interesting. ^^
SCORGE: nm, I looked at your final and the dust on that thing really made a difference. Thumbs up

All righty. We're in the last stretch. My plan is to set up the poll tomorrow morning early, so let's get those finals in if you haven't posted already.
Thanks guys.
