Hi all,
I have been lurking around the forums for sometime now, amongst all this awesomeness, feeling a little to self concious to post. The art on here is absolutely incredible.

I am in college studying Art & Design and hopefully I will be able to go and study animation at university aiming for the games industry. I want to learn digital painting for character and environment design, then moving into 3d modelling/animation. I wish to have a professional looking portfolio in 5 years time to be searching for employment. I hope that's a realistic outlook.

I hope, that with your help, that I will be able to achieve this.

So where to start? There was an artist once that said if you can paint a cube you can paint anything....

These are studies of simple objects (I thought I would start with fruit as many do). The apples were painted on Tues 14 Apr 09. The pears were done today - Weds 15 Apr 09. I guess we have to start somewhere and I hope this can be regarded as a hopeful one.

Venial,

Definately a good start to a sketchbook. The fruit looks great. About how long do you spend on each? Keep up the good work.

p.s. Also the fruit is painted on a white background. I have heard that painting on a neutral background, such as a lighter grey, is better than painting straight on white because white tends to make the colors around it seem louder/brighter, so you may get better/more realistic contrast painting on a neutral canvas. Hopefully that helps a little.

rth2art Thanks for the comment. I'll try painting on grey backgrounds and see how they turn out. The apples took me around an hour and the pears about one and a half hours.

Work has been mad over the weekend, excuses excuses. Here's a sketch from today using photo reference. Yep, this is my scruffy pencil techniques. Seriously need to improve this. It does not look so bad if you take five steps back :S

You lay awake at night staring at the ceiling, so you pick up your book and you start to draw. My pencil work bites. Keep on sketching....
