Not very happy with this one. I think I'll submit another one later. I don't think I've ever drawn a ship, and it shows.

MIAU - I did a Google search and still wasn't very clear on it. I saw some old ones from the British Navy, and it seems to be a massive multi masted ship. Just a guess?

I had a google as well and all I could find were little trinkets - ships made out of actual animal horn:

they nick-named it 'the horn'

edit: regarding what a 'horn ship' is, the topic is open ended, so i don't think it refers to 'a real world ship'. do wotcha want! =)

awalloffire: nice ghostly look there. I like it :)
Plaf, I like yours as well. Neeto!
That said, I'm with Plaf in that this is an "Open Topic", in so far that it is ship (water ship, air ship, space ship, etc.) related.
Looking forward to seeing the schtuff today!

dagreengo, cool idea. Keep it coming. I like where you are going with it!
Here's mine. Admittedly more about trying new styles than the vessel itself. http://www.in-sight.net/Sketches/294-solarsail.jpg

Hi, this is my first DSG submission. Hope you enjoy:
http://venus.walagata.com/w/mbjacobson/hornship.jpg
I took the 'horn' to be the codename for some type of experimental spacecraft propulsion system. Actually, now that I look at it; it's almost as if an existing ship was retrofitted with the new drive. No coloring, though; I really need to get some Prismacolor markers.
edit: If you can't see the image, it means I ran out of bandwidth for the day; check back tomorrow.

Everyone is doing really great, ships and vehicles are hardest for me, I grew up drawing people and monsters and now I am having to catch up on the mechanical stuff...I was pretty happy with this though.

Hunger Artist, I love these background colors that you have been doing, are those digital or are you doing washes or something?

December 18th, 2003, 05:21 PM
idiotapathy: hmmm... good point, but i guess it might just as well be 'flight' as in 'to flee'
rockhead : still doing the black&white stylee. not bad =)
hungartist: yeah, i agree with rockhead. cool colours man... dunno how you do it =)
mikeC : cool. reminds me a little of laputa-castle in the sky, i love the idea of hovering ships like that.
oregano: like it. good shading! =) the stars could do with more work though. i read a tutorial about a way to do realistic (ish) stars in photoshop that i use myself sometimes. it goes something like fill layer with white - add 50% noise - blur more - adjust levels until you end up with a starfield. (yeah well. looks better when it's not on a small thumbnail like this =)

Since this is open ended and stuff, I decided to do another one depicting the captain of my horn ship on his first flight as captain. I might have got carried away with the parrots, they were fun to draw.
http://www.rockydavies.com/forreview/capt.jpg
I just noticed that I drew the parrot to the left sitting on a branch, and I just realized where the heck would that branch be coming from if they were on a ship in the middle of space. Maybe-just maybe, because they are in space they needed an oxygen source, so they brought the plant/tree on the voyage to provide that oxygen. Of course how would a parrot fly in outer space? This is getting too complicated.

plaf- I just color my drawing on a multiply + overlay layer with 2 colors and keep tweaking them until they compliment the lines + shading underneath

My second First Flight of the Horn ship. or is that first second flight? A far cry from my hornier version ... I gotta learn to shut up before I embarass myself.

Booyah! Breakthrough day for me! I learned alot about Painter today.
My heart was in this one, spent... more time than usual about 2 and a half hours. So worth it! I had alot of fun and like I said I broke through the wall I've been facing for awhile.
Have any of you seen the anime Last Exile? My DSG today was referenced from a screenshot. Fantastic anime series, one of my favorites, go and get it today! Ha, I even listened to the OST while I painted.

After reading about hunger_artist's use of brush settings, I messed around and found the dissolve setting. This is barely a concept, but it made me very happy to do it. I may do another entry later tonight.
This topic seems to have opened people up! By all means keep putting more entries up -- this is a good day for multiples.

LOL dagreengo, something like that crossed my mind, but I was able to contain myself. That made me laugh, you did a good job with it and I really like your stars and background, it looks nice! I know what you mean about having too much time on your hands. I am trying to find work and in the meantime I just surf the net and draw pictures. Speaking of which where has William been? I think he's off preparing for battle.

Yo Plaf!! Thanks for the tips, but I did that whole picture in about 45 minutes and spent about 10 seconds doing the stars.I just didn't spend the time on them or much of the rest of it.
However! here is a revision for you!

So mine's supposed to be a cross between viking, greek, and the usual steampunk fare we see so often (with a hint of Royal Navy circa 1750, pffffft! Right!). Anyhoo, I dig what I've seen so far. I can't believe I didn't think to join this wacky fun sooner!

I got the tutorial for that starfeild background from Greg Martin's site (http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_star_field.html)
Oregano- It's looking good and I have NO clue how you got those curves so nice looking. On the first vers. I wondered if it wasn't 3D work.
Rockhead- I took a look at your site (http://www.rockydavies.com) ... and it's too cool! Gimble is so cool and moving my mouse rapidly over the links to make him twitch ... was 30 minutes of nonstop fun. And I'm in love with Cora (http://www.rockydavies.com/toc%20concept/html%27s/conc%20images/Corawhite.jpg)
And I'm disturbed.

It is. I had this crazy idea about trying something new today, so I tried it here. I did the basic composition in Bryce and kicked it over to Painter to "paint" it. Did the touch up and stars in PS7. I wanted to keep a painterly feel to image.
Not sure I really liked doing that though. Couldn't shake the feeling like I was somehow cheating. And, I suppose the argument could be made that this isn't a true "sketch", either. But if anyone is worried about it, I can sit down and draw it out fifty times by hand with a #2 pencil on typing paper.
Mostly for me, it was about trying out a new technique, since so much of my stuff here is b/w sketch anyway.
I know. I'm scum

another post...something like a 50's sci-fi book cover.
That B&W scratchboard style seems perfect for spot illustrations. I'd love to see something sequential done in it by a bunch of different artists -- wouldn't that be fun?:)

Awalloffire: Hell, that's a better ship than i can draw (hence the lack of traditional ship in mine) And the glowing ghostly look is cool. I was trying to get my sails to look glowy and translucent.
MikeC: Looks great, i like how you put a lot of thought into the background.
Oregano: Holy crap, that's a beautiful rendering. Besides the ship, those planets are amazing. Gives a real sense of space. and space.
Wystro: oh man, how did you get that plasma looking stuff? is it hand painted? i'd love to have my sails look similar.

Rho -- I used a bright red on Color Dodge with a 300 brush and wet edges. I then used the tablet and danced around lightly with it and overlapped a lot. It seems that a very big brush used lightly with a pressure-sensitive stylus can make very interesting smaller marks.
Super-large brushes used lightly for small areas seems to convey a sense of energy. And the overlapped areas with color dodge pop out very brightly.
I used color dodge because of some very good advice from bkmini. I've tapped into other color effect settings based on what people like Hunger_Artist have done. I would suggest using the paintbrush and going down to each effect one-by-one and experiment. You'll be in the same boat as me and a lot of other people -- enjoy the company!
Again I must say that I love the work in this thread. People have taken off with this theme, and it's a joy to behold.

Too lame? I'm sorry. :p
Does anyone else find it especially difficult to do work with mechs in Photoshop on a tablet? The slight chunky/pixely wigglies in the lines urge me to scribble more and more. Straight, precise lines in PS just dont seem to work out well. It's odd because sketching people and such on the comp doesn't bother me. I guess those sketches are loose and easy where as mechs I'm unfamiliar with and I tend to work slowly. Has anyone had a similar experience and found a way around it? I apologize this is just a quick pencil sketch.
dagreengo
December 19th, 2003, 08:28 AM
Velo- i know what you mean ... I cannot draw mechs in PS tablet or no ... but then again I really can't draw mechs on paper either. But if I ever need a straight line in PS I just use the brush and pick a point then press shift and tap where I want the line to end and a faint line will appear depending on the size of your brush ... I just use that line as a guide and sketch over it or around it.

Oregano: Was going to sketch a solar sail craft too, but I changed my mind.
I had fun reading about them, apparently one is going to be launched next year.
If I understood what it said correctly, I think yours has a steering problem.
On a sail boat you need to be able to adjust the sails in order to steer, same principle applies to solar sails.
Hunger artist: Like the style you have going right now.
Rockhead: That bw style seems addictive :) I like the pirate captain, In a fantasy setting those parrots wouldn´t pose a problem.
Velo: Yes, I noticed that to, using guides, grids and line tools helps.
I think it is easier to get an quick overview when working on paper.
