ROUND #154 :: CHARACTER FOR A WWII MOTIVATIONAL POSTER

DESCRIPTION

Character for a WWII Motivational Poster

Pretty straight forward, guys. Design a character to be used on a WWII motivational poster. Remember that you want to think about what subject you want your character to be addressing. Convincing people to enlist? Reminding them that there girlfriends are probably spies? Telling their girlfriends that to help the boys they need to work in factories? "Keep Calm, Carry On?"

You don't have to do the poster itself, just the character. But you might find it fun if you design the poster too. :] just keep the 3/4ths rule in mind! If you want a close up for the poster, you should include a full-body sketch too.

------------

ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?

--------------------

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);

---

Quick Check: Have You Submitted Your Chow Properly?

- is it named correctly? (ie, "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg")
- has it been uploaded using the attachment editor?
- have you also uploaded or linked to your wips?
- have you followed the brief?

Good luck!

JessiBean! Wow, thats magic, perfectly captured the style, great rendering and just nailing the 40-50s era wholesome/not-so-wholesome mix just made me crack up!! Awesome! Cant say enough!
Cheers

Jessibean - Best overall poster design. I like the character, pose, colours and style of the piece. I think it answers the brief the best!
Ostrander - Really liked the design, slogan and the postery texture/effect of the piece.

Since there were so few entries, I forced myself to vote for only two:

Jessibean - As I mentioned in your sb, the only thing holding it back for me is the white text, which feels a bit clunky and is difficult to read. Overall, though, your entry is incredibly well-executed...she has a fantastic expression and clear body language, the composition is really strong, and the rendering is *gorgeous*. Well done!

Shannanigan--I burst out laughing the first time I saw yours--brilliant, modern take on an old WWII campaign. The stylization is perfect for this topic, and for me your entry fits the brief best. Really, really excellent work!

I voted for Ostrander and Jessi, I thought the message, poster work, and art was the fullest, also very funny! VD and Nazi's, what a choice, could not just vote for one.

Good round! I voted for:

Masque: Nice! Actually looks like it would've been used as motivational poster during war times.

dirkvandulmen:like the design, composition

ostrander:awesome, looks like a horror movie poster, love the addition of creases to the design

Wow guys, good round. I know I'm definitely feeling the inspiration! :P So I always love it when people give across the board critiques and I hope I'm not being too forward as a newb by doing this but I know how much I appreciate it from others who take the time, soooo here we go!

Jessibean - definitely voted for yours :D lovely lovely lovely, I always enjoy your work. Fun idea, beautiful composition, I like the interest you added to the bottom left text, great job with form and lighting on the figure, I like how you cropped her from the original sketch and corrected the hips and apron's tilt direction, and nice job making the poster look aged and textured. Only real things I see that could be different are perhaps doing a different font or something with the white text in bottom left like a few others have commented on, and for whatever reason the ruffled part of her apron sticks out to me and I keep arguing with myself whether it needs a shadow underneath it on the dress or whether you would really even see one... not sure on that one. Wonderful job though!

Giorge - I'm actually not quite clear on why yours didn't fit the brief, but I thought you did a nice job. Though I kind of think I prefer the simplicity of some of your WIPs like the second and third ones particularly, very pretty. When the skin tones and hair were added it kind of got a little muddier for me, and the material covering the breasts doesn't quite sit right on the body, seems like it sticks up at the top. Also with the attention paid to the lighting and modeling of her face and torso, her legs and feet (mostly the one on the left) seem a big rushed and kind of streaky. I really like what you did with the ships and lines going back on the ground plane, that's nice :)

Shannanigan - Loved yours! You have a wonderful sense of humor in just about all of the work I've seen from you :) I adore the brilliant little details you put in like the tiny swastika tattoo hidden under her collar and the garter attaching to the pantyhose, this is a joy to look at! I also like how equal attention is paid to everything on the figure from her face to the flower in her hair to even the fingernails and buckles on her shoes, you leave nothing untouched. I really appreciated the WIP and inspiration board you posted with it as well, it was extremely helpful in seeing how you put your image together, thank you. The things that didn't sit quite right were her fingers on the hand hanging off the chair arm don't seem quite in the right positions/perspective, the line underneath the breast on the left doesn't quite match up with the line coming from her cleavage - seems like the bottom line should extend to the right just a tad more, and I think the breast on the right doesn't seem quite as full or large because maybe it needs to come down just a bit or perhaps it's just that the line along the top of it should be lighter or shorter when it goes past the coat and against the skin? The main wrinkle on the upper arm resting on the chair seems a bit dark and the wrinkles of the skirt on the right of the picture are not quite as convincing or gravity-affected as the rest of the garment wrinkles. I very much like your color palette and the overall richness of the textures you used. All that being said, I was very happy to vote for yours :)

Arthur 'Two Sheds' - I very much like that you did something other than American. I like your color palette and the excellent treatment you did for the cannons and soldiers in the background, though it makes me wish the character in the foreground had more contrast. Maybe a tad brighter colors, heavier shadows and more distinct highlights? Not quite sure but I definitely want him to stand out from the background a bit more. I think you did a great job lowering that shoulder on the hand sticking out, but I still want his index finger on the hand resting against his leg to be shorter. I'm also not sure what his eye is doing on the side of his face behind the nose, but I do like the facial expression you pulled off and I really like how you did your text.

dwinbotp - Great job making it look aged! The graininess and the colors are right on. For me, yours looks the most like an actual poster from WWII more than any other entry, from the color palette to the cigarettes as the subject to the way you did your message including the lucky strike circle and the bottom left ad. I think her face seems a bit small for her body though and her mouth doesn't quite look like it extends far enough to the right for the way her face is angled. The line for her cheek that's right there at the edge of her mouth and nose seems a little too pronounced. I also think her shoulder behind her face needs to come in and down a bit and her arm on the right side seems too thick, either the bulge at the bottom for the elbow should come up or the top of the forearm is too high. Nice piece though, well done. (And this is off topic but I also liked your website :D)

RogerAdams - I think this is nice, I even like the kind of stylization of her face even though the mouth is very large and at kind of a weird angle. I think you've definitely got some potential with this but it feels a bit unfinished and flat in several places such as the buckles on her chest and some of the pockets and the goggles. Also the paper texture seems a bit too heavy handed, though I like the rough edges. Overall a nice concept but I think it could have been polished a bit more and maybe done something with the background.

dirkvandulmen - I think this was a wonderful idea and the explosion in the background is absolutely glorious! I'm kind of sad however because I sort of liked the style and the feel of it a lot more in your second WIP when it was much more loose and sketchy and stylized than when all the sharper details came in, which is a problem I typically tend to struggle with as well. I think the composition is well done and the plane definitely looks best in the finished version (though the nose on the plane came out a bit flat looking). You might be careful in the future to not push it too far when you have a good thing going.

A-pril - I think the idea behind this is great, I like the message you chose for it. I do think you should polish up on your anatomy though and definitely try some face studies. It seems a bit like the nose is at more of a profile angle than the rest of the face and the mouth seems a bit off as well. Her leg on the right has sort of a strange twist to it that seems unnatural, I think it would probably be facing forward more. I also kind of wish her eyes were looking at the viewer so that her expression was more engaging. It's a great start though and I look forward to seeing more work from you and seeing your progress :)

[flow] - (I'm not quite sure how to type your username... I apologize!) I like the unique direction you went with this and any time I see the word "Science!" used as an interjection it makes me smile :D I like the facial expression on her and I like the sexy scientist idea, but I think the painting seems a bit mushy and I'd like to see it be a little more sharp and crisp so it looks more finished. I also would like to see something a little more interesting in the background, or atleast something with a bit more interesting composition to it. This piece does have some nice simplicity to it though and lovely color choices.

Masque - I think the texture of your brushstrokes is refreshing and I actually do like that you kept it grayscale even though at first I thought I would like it better in color. I do wish it had a little more contrast though and the highlights and shadows would have been pushed just a bit more to add more drama to a pretty calm scene. I also think the text treatment on it is a bit plain jane and would have liked to have seen something a little more interesting, but the message and the execution of the image are definitely reminiscent of the era.

Ostrander - Everybody loves a good zombie now and then ;) Great scare message and nice composition with the zombie face and the city in the background. I'm not quite sure what's going on with the explosion coming off that gun, it looks like it just shot off a rocket or something? I love the nazi zombie stepping on lady liberty's head but I think the figure overall seems a bit on the dark side and I would have liked to have seen some more dynamic and sharper highlights on him to make it stand out.

Dan Valker - I think your concept behind this is great about keeping a victory garden healthy to aid in the war and I like your figure, my biggest beef with it is that it seems so unfinished overall and I think it would have been really amazing with a little more polish :( I think if the rendering of the skin was a little more refined and there was some to match it in the clothing it would be an excellent piece. Though I think the corners of her mouth seem a bit odd and to be honest the font of the text at the top really bothers me and doesn't seem to fit with other posters from the time period. She's got a ton of potential to her though and could definitely be something awesome in a more completed state!

Whew! Sorry for the novel.... Anywho, this was tons of fun to do and congrats to everyone who attempted and submitted :asspat:
