Yo OB: i totally apologize. You need to repost your sketch. i was toying around with the idea of adding a STICKY to this and then goofed it up by locking it while going through the admin ops. oops.
* everyone look for a new "step by step, show us how you did it" thread to appear after i head down to atomix and grab my coffee.
**remember that today is the day to put the extra ummff! in your ports to honor Mr. Andrew Jones.

Whoa...due to keyth's little mistake I am the first to post his little tribute to Andrew Jones...I hope my SP does justice to it.

koryh: welcome! this is a rockin first sp! i really like all the brush strokes. it has that oils feel with the toned canvas showing through. very nice.
mcotie: its about time! i was wondering when you were going to start doing sps. heh, very nice expression.
herm: very nice! i like the colors a lot. nice brush strokes as well. the cool background really pushes your warm sp out.
keyth: nice step by steps! i have a couple on my webpage as well under tutorials...
mia: you are continuing to improve! very nicely done. i would like to see a little more done with the hair though.
jester: you are always improving too. i think maybe your mouth might be a little small. also, watch the perspective on your glasses and nose.
i am still behind ;____;. i was way too tired last night to do one, so here is my halloween one!

Well, everything seems to go sloppy for me this time of year
Anyway... thank you all. Without you I wouldn't have get into drawing/painting/art... I guess you know better what I was missing. Your feedback and the way you've helped me makes this place special. Special thx go to Andrew and Jason and Coro and Foster and all the BIG boys. You make conceptart.org rock! :chug:

What a great thread. Great work everybody !!!
Here's my first SP. It looks better than I expected, but still not good. Seems to be a little bit distorted...
However, it was done in pencil, the white stuff was added in painter ( seems as if my white charcoal was lost while moving to a new flat.... :( =).

Here is my tribute to Andrew, i really tried to have life and story in todays portrait, and i'm pretty happy with it, the ressemblance is there, and there is a little something else, i guess ... tell me what you think
1/11/02
http://erhnam.free.fr/spod3.JPG
wow hermchen, great one, i love the colors and the overall rendering
Hexal, welcome here. If you draw every day you will improve like Oblio did. For now i think you should pay more attention to what you see instead of what you think you are seeing ... forget everything you think you know about mouth, eyes, hairs, even forget these words. When you are looking at your reflection in the mirror dont think its a face, dont think its you, just think it is forms, shapes, volumes, and try to reproduce them the more accurately possible, if you see something as a perfect circle (like the pupil) draw it as a perfect circle (thats not the case in your portrait).
Dont try to rush the process, you dont have to have a finished drawing in 5 minutes, you will be able to do that later in your life. just draw slowly, try to view the lines and curves and draw them carefully, if possible in the minimal number of strokes needed, instead of tons of little scribblings. Do that again and again until you can look at both your drawing and the mirror and you see no more mistakes in the shapes and proportions.
post more and more, we will witness your progress :)
Elliot i love that
Oblio, hello, i'm quite new on this forum, so i dont have seen every of your progress and every pictures you have posted, but i must say that like everyone else i am really impressed by your will to learn and your actual success in this task.
Maybe you already did that, but i would like to see a "clean" line drawing from you, instead of all the scribblings. I'm not saying that scribbling is bad, but in art school we only did line drawings (pure black and white) for at least 3 monthes, no values, no color. In fact until a drawing wasnt perfect in shapes and proportions the teachers had us draw it again. The explanation behind that was that the teachers wanted us to learn how to look at things, to see the small variations in the direction of the lines, to be able to eyeball proportions and directions of lines. And we didnt do any values exercices for 2 monthes because they said to us that when we add values to a picture we tend to "correct" a bad drawing with the values, and they wanted us to have a perfect drawing before adding the values in order to havd a perfect final piece (its a bit utopic to use the word "perfect" but you get the point ...)
So I think you whould try to draw more simple, clean line self portraits, trying to find more and more easily the RIGHT line, instead of asking us to find it among several others .... (I'm saying that but i'm stille struggling with that point myself, but i think its the right direction)
I really like your artworks, i hope i'm not sounding harsh or anything.

@Mime - Thanks for the feedback, It didn't take me 5 mins to do though, it took a little while actually.I willtry to slow down even more to find thoses lines and try to really get the proportion right. I'll post one on sinday when i get back from my dads house.

Andrew Jones...what can i say? i've never really painted before i came across your thread. i literally owe you a great deal. look at what you have created in all these people. i've learned a lot by doing a SP a day: color, technique, Painter, and a little bit about myself as well(sooo far to go of course). at risk of sounding cheesy, without you i don't know if i would have started something like this.
i am truly thankful!

Thank you Keyth, thank you Oblio and thank you to everyone who has joined me in this journey.
i was a little nervous at first.. tributes seem like the thing you do after someone dies. and I am very much alive .i do not need nor do I deserve any tribute.
I am not the paintings I am not the painter. I am only the paint. pay your tribue to the higher artist at work, and pay tribute to yourself.
I want everyone of you to realize what you are doing and how important it is.
you are all artists!, making art for yourself and the sake of art. it dosent come any purer than this. and it is something that is easily taken for granted
I have sacfificed so much for the love of my art. but for one of the first times I can now see how my sacfifices have not been made in vain . every one of your portraits is like a gift to me. thank you all for giving back so much to me in return. I cant explain what is like to see an Artist like oblio come so far in his art so fast and feeling like I had something to do with it. it is a beautifull warm feeling and I can never explain how special that feels. thank you oblio for the dedication of this day.
so my brothers, my sisters, my artists
join me
together let the spirit of art guide us in this journey
into ourselves, into our art, and into our souls.
our posibilities are endless.
Sincerely
Andrew Peter Jones

Ok, I did this oct 30th, but didnt get a chance to print it till today, and since it was for a large formate digital printing class, I consider printing it to have been "completing" it. this is 30 by 20 inches. I don't normally look this mean, honest.!
Took about 6 hours with my little graphire 2 and ps 7, I only spent that long because I'm using self portriats as a "self motivated personal project" and am turning them in for grades. :):):)

here is my contribution for today, it is a section of a larger piece, but i've got a big game tomorrow and have to get to bed. maybe someone can help me with this little problem, i'm not really liking the feel of my paintings, i need a more painterly feel to them, should i use more hard edged burshes rather than the soft ones?

Here's my contribution.
Phew, I almost forgot that today was the day! This was made somewhat under duress. You see I have no mirror besides the one in my bathroom. So i ran around the apt. looking for something reflective enough to use. And finally settled on a cd so it was kind of tough. With a small blurry reflection.

I'd also typed up a something but the board ate it. This is much less eloquent than the first, and that is quite a task mind you.
I drew a bunch of these today, I lost count. I maybe like one sorta but not really. It really was a struggle. However out of respect and Admiration for Andrew and his work (and in gratiture for that crit he gave me a while back. Really helped) I'll get up the nerve to post a few.

Sorry for the big dowload everyone. You can see an earlier attempt in the bottom half of the second sketch, the lines are white. that wierd spot of value near the chin and some of the dark lines in the face are from that too. I may take the sketches down for a detail on the fist one later. I think it looses alot at the res.
Thank you Andrew, you are a constant inspiration and a great help. Your sacrifices have indeed not been in vain.

As I am sure a lot of you know...the reason that I even started a thread entitled "Journey of an Absolute Rookie" is because of Andrew Jones' inspiration. The reason I got the idea to write off tv and every other useless activity every night to focus on art is because Andrew Jones did that with his self portraits. I remember thinking to myself after my brother showed me his post, "If this Andrew Jones guy can do it...then I can to". So I have been drawing and painting for about seven weeks. Seeing your self portrait every day kicks my butt into learning art...I feel like if I don't post something then I have no excuse because I KNOW Andrew Jones is going to post something. So now I keep moving forward...trudging every step. I only hope that someday I can come close to capturing the beauty and design God has placed all around me. Thanks Andrew...YOU ROCK!

hey, lotsa new faces, oblio his campaign worked, apparently :D
welcome everyone.
I also have another version which i completely shaded, but that always goes wrong with me somehow :( so here is another attempt with only black... i placed the sketch infront of the blacks, because i thought the face showed litle 'substance' (read: to less black) but i had/have no time to finish it and i like it this way.
And i'm also really happy because the last three sp's look alot like me (i think/hope :) ).

@mcotie: Are you angry all the time? Man this must be really exhausting :) Nice SP though...I like the expression, really, but you could be less lazy at the neck area :)
@miasmask: really nice improvements...is that a photoshop filter that I see there? damn u...Filters are a big DO NOT, please? They never improve your paintings, only you can do so...don't let a foolish filter do your excellent work ;)
@Hexal: I would like to see you improve over the next month :) I'm looking forward to it
@Koryh: This reminds me of some Illustrations from the midthirties...very cool...post more!!!
@daarken: I wonder how you change the lighting so wonderfully? I have to try some of those...from hell...pics, too. A ToDo for tomorrow..., the last one...how did u hope it would turn out better?
@Oblio: sorry for taking your fist position...blame keyth... ;)
@keyth: Nice one, as everytime. But I'd like to see something more different from you...might a change in style be possible? I'D LOVE TO SEE THAT...
@jrr: I prefer the first one...because of the red ear especially. But I like both...post more!!!
@Kchen: I like the sketchyness and the comic character of it, but the nose bucks me, and then, next moment it doesn't...oh I think it's just me...urks
@hanajima: So simple, and so impressiv...really cool...
@Blackhawk: Hm...I don't know about the colors...a bit to much green in your face I think, beside of that...lovely :3

herm: well, the way it turned out it looks kind of flat (my oil sp). your new one is cool. i like what is going on with all the sweeping lines. good use of line to portray form.
coriat: be sure to watch your proportions. your head seems to be too wide and short. also look at the width of your neck.
mind: woah! remind me not to get on your bad side, heh. youve really been pushing yourself to explore different things, very nice.
wood: welcome! this is a really good start. one thing that pops out to me is that your eyes are at one perspective while your mouth and nose are at a different perspective. nice job rendering.
xflox: i like the way you are building up form, but watch your eyes. the lids have thickness, and look to make sure your pupils are looking in the same way, unless you want that insane look, hehe.
blackhawk: ahh! green face red nose! heh. very good eyes as usual. i think you should give more form to the wing of your nostril.
hana: welcome! i really like the first ink one. very cool mood to it. there are a lot of interesting shadow and light shapes. keep it up!
kchen: ahh! finally something from you! very nice use of line. you give the piece a lot of excitement with the lines. i really like how you rendered the shirt and hair. wow, you look very young! if you say you are 18 i will die.
negative: very cool. i like your palette and technique. i think your eyes might be a little bit small compared to the rest of your face. also, your forehead seems to shift to the side.
jrr: very cool!! i really like the light palette one. i love all the brushstrokes. really sit for a few seconds and observe how your nostrils wrap around and what shape they have.
blank: nice lighting. i think maybe the red line draws too much attention away from your sp.
groove: good start, but watch the shape of your head. it starts to look a little rubbery.
andrew: you are far too modest, and i like that. i dont think you realize how many people you have had an affect on. if i had not found concept i would not be drawing everyday. i thank everyone here for pushing me forward, and to strive for a better tomorrow. i think a major part of being an artist is to submerse themselves in a group of other artists and to feed off of everyone elses passion. thank you again.
ok, here is a quick one from me today. about 40 minutes. just woke up and thought it would be nice to start the day out with a sp. uh yeah, im supposed to be biting my lip in a sexy, seductive look! you can not resist me ! bwahahahaha! ok anyway...

Great job to everyone who managed to do it!
Everyone's work over the past week is amazing, this thread is so inspiring!

Hi everyone. Here is my latest self portraits.
I am really sorry I can't respond to everyone...the weekends are crazy busy for me. But a lot of peopl asked about what tool I used to achieve the effect I had in my last portrait. I used painter 7 for everything "painting" oriented. So it was a combination of a bunch of water tools....mostly the distorto. "just add water" works good too.
Ok tonight I sat down to do my self portrait.........sketch.....erase.......sketch.... erase. I kept having all these problems with my self portrait so I just decided ok lemme get this one out of the way and start again. So I sketched myself fat to get a good laugh and get my "bad one" out of the way.
http://www.imagemagician.com/images/elephantdiarrhe/Drawing 46 fat self portrait.jpg
This is the next one I did after this...it isn't great but it's definitely better than the first right? hheehehe.
I will respond to everyone tomorrow. You guys are churning out some great great stuff! I love this thread.

new one, still improvement in the likelyness i think, and i'm experimenting painter (7), all done with palette knife.
As for the mood i was sad most of the day because i was thinking about my dead grandfather and that he would never see my drawings ... or maybe he does .. where he is.
http://erhnam.free.fr/spod4b.JPG
@Nostrand , hya, i'm new here but ive seen all the SP you did before, and its amazing, you really have a very strong brushwork, and the likeliness seems very consistent throug all your SP.
@mind , i also looked at your progresses and its great, these exercices are very good for all of us ! One thing, i dont think you should do those little highlights with the airbrush, they look too "shiny plastic". Maybe dont add them, or try to slowly add large blocks of solid values, but never rush to the little highlights, first shoose a middle value, lets call it "4" then add the large blocks of "3" and "5", then "2" and "6" and finally the darkest shadows and lightest lights. One thing they teached us in art school is that a drawing should still look good whithout the darkest shadows and lightest lights, you just add them in the end to give more power to the picture, but thats all. (but i know, i know it may be the more enjoying part of the process and its always a temptation to "skip" the other etaps)
@hunter , i love your funny faces on all the SP i've seen from you, and you quite remind me of a good friend, thats funny :)
@keyth , thanxs for running and moderating this forum, and i mist say i'm impressed by the large number of SP you've done, and they are all of a great quality !!
@daarken , nice creepyness, as always :)
@hanajima, your linework is impressive, seems very confident.
and of course
@Andrew , Thanxs a lot for giving me the will to draw more !! and thanxs for sharing your time, your art, i should even say your life, with us !!!
I'll try to keep the pace and do one evreyday, and i will try to change the view angle when i'll think i nailed right the basics proportions of my face in front view :)

Here's todays. starting to come togother a bit compared to yesterdays. Yes, I look foreward to this journey.
I'm still having to draw from the reflection of a damn cd. Hence the circles in the middle. I must admit, it does kind of help to keep yourself from not knowing when your moving.

My eyes are still burning from 3 or 4 days ago. I've been having nightmares everynight for the past 2 weeks. Some have been bad, some have been uneasy, but the past week they've started to affect my sleep and I wake up very irritated and groggy. I don't know what is causing it, but I feel pretty uncomfortable in my skin, if you know what I mean.

Sorry if I don't crit much tonight, I'm going to head to sleep in a moment here.
Hunter & Daarken - Thanks for pointing that out to me, I'll watch out for that next time. I appreciate any crits and advice, so I thank you. Great SP's both of you as well. This seems like a less confident batch from you Hunter, but the second one is very nice. Great as always Daarken.
Hermchen - Thanks :) Yeah, I lost control with the colors in the last one. Colors are my major weakness, I need to get some books and classes on color or something, I stink at it :D I'm trying to learn though.
Exceptional work everyone and it's great to see so many new faces. I am extremely sorry that I can't crit some of you. I try to make an effort to crit every person that posted on that day, but I don't feel well, sorry :( Tomorrow night I'll try to do the regular crits. Night everyone.

Blackhawk: This seems like a less confident batch from you Hunter, . . . You got that right! They take longer as well. I guess a week off really kicked my arse.
Lookin' forward to getting through it though.

@ hunter: great work as usual. love the red parts...
@ Blackhawk: nice style. maybe you work a little bit more on the contrast and shadow parts. compare the hard shadow at the nose and the right side of your face.

The entire last week I've felt very "blah". As I mentioned, I've been having nightmares quite frequently, thankfully last night I couldn't remember my dreams, so my sleep was much better. I feel nervous all the time though. It's killing my inspiration a bit, so I wanted to get more spontaneous tonight and just let the pencil go with the flow.

Hunter - I like this one. Still seems like your a little shakey, but this one is already much better than yesterdays. The right ear is bugging me though, it seems too flat. Other than that, great job man :)
Nold - Impressive set of pen sketches there. The third one looks like he has a fat left chin :D Nice work and welcome.
Rapunzel - Yeah, my shading wasn't strong at all on that last one. It was in the back of my mind on that portrait, my head has been racing while doing these things the last couple of days. I'll try to keep an eye on my values next time though. Thanks for the crit, much appreciated :) This is a nice SP. My only crits are the edges are too soft all over. Great job though, lovely ear on it.
Hermchen - I like this style. The jacket comes out lose and strong. Only thing detracting I think is the hair. It's getting too cross-hatched and wild, but everything else on it is great. Good job.
Benzo - Welcome back. This is one came out strong I thought. I like the lines on the cheeks. The neck is flat, but the face is very nice.
Daarken - We all are feeling exactly what your feeling, especially myself if you've seen some of the junk I've posted in the last couple of weeks. I love those pencil sketches though. After I saw them I had to drop the wacom again and do a pencil portrait, it compelled me :D Your definitely getting stronger. You'll realize it when you get over your funk and you crank out an incredible SP that you thought you could never do before. Keep at it man.
Grooveholmes - This is a very nice piece. That CD ring adds a humorous flair to it. I just enjoy the fact that your using a CD. It's great how inventive aritsts can get when they are desparate :D. Turn off the lights in the room on the next one and try using the reflection off the monitor. I know I've done that a few times and so has Jhibbs.

I am so frustrated. For the past week I haven't been able to do anything good. I worked on this self portrait for a while and kept making a line and erasing...making a line and erasing. So frustrating. So this is the final result. Doesn't look anything like me and doesn't look good at all but it got too late and I just gave up and went to bed. I am posting a picture from when I started it because I thought that someone might be able to tell me something specific that I am doing wrong. I am new to drawing so be specific or I might not understand hehe.

"Final" Crappy Result
http://www.imagemagician.com/images/elephantdiarrhe/Drawing 48 pencil self portrait.jpg
DISCLAIMER: I feel bad giving critiques when mine sucks so bad. At least I can help other people...so I can contribute something good hehe.
Blackhawk - I have been really liking yours lately. The values you have been able to achieve have been really good. This most recent one was really good. The eyes are skewed a bit I think. Great work bro keep it up. Sorry about the nightmares...paint them for the dream thread...get them out of your system.
Grooveholmes - Great work man...especially for looking at a cd hahaha. Seeing that center hole on your portraits always cracks me up. But honestly...the likeness looks very very close between all your self portraits and you captured values really well on this one. This is coming from a total amateur so I'm not sure if this is right advice but maybe contouring some of your shading lines to the face would help make it look even more realistic. The left side is contoured real well. Great job on your portraits.
daarken - I think these are really good actually. I can see where they wouldn't look like you because I have seen all your previous self portraits but I really like the ink one. I think it is good. I think it captures your likeness really quick and sketchy. Keep moving forward. You rock man!
benzo - I know how you feel...that's the story of my life...I lose every portrait hehe... I really like the color scheme going on here. It's really nice. The background compliments the skin tone it's really good. The head is too skinny and long but you probably knew that already.
Hexal - The proportions you have going look pretty good. I would work on the actual rendering of each piece of your face. This was a quick one like you said and I think I can see that you have an understanding of proportion. Next time just focus on the shading and rendering of each piece of the face.
Hermchen - Your stuff always has character and emotion to it. I really like that about your portraits. They really do capture a moment in space like a photograph. This one's likeness looks a tad bit different than the others but it was done great! I would like to see you go all out and try to make one of your self portraits really realistic. I think you could kick some butt. Good work.
Rapunzel - Holy cow...look at you taking stuff up a notch...nice work man! I don't know anything about colors so I can't help you there...sorry. I think the proportions on this are very good and the setup is nice. I think the hair goes a bit too high. Also I think your "right" bro...the one on the left in the painting...sticks out a little too far. It throws the position off a little bit. Great work man...keep it up your values look good!
Nold - I have to say that I like your style. I like the way you place your lines. Couple things. Your proportions could use a little more work but they are good. Just work them a little more. Also when doing hair...treat it as an area to be shaded...not necessarily as lines overlapping each other. Try some shading for the cheek bones etc... I look forward to seeing more of your stuff. Good job man.
hunter - Your stuff really kicks butt. I am not on a level to even be able to critique your work. You rock man...can you post a step by step?...or just send me one of your painter scripts hehe.
mime - This last SP rocks. I really like it. What settings do you use for the palette knife tool and how do you go about applying the strokes I have never been able to get it to work. I don't understand how people can do a whole painting with it. I wanted you to know that I really really appreciated your last comments. They really helped (although you can't see it through this piece of crap SP). That one statement about having it be a good drawing minus the highest and lowest is really really good. That actually was going through my head as I did this one. Maybe you could help me with this too...I have no idea really how to shade an area. I guess I could just do crosshatching but I really don't grasp how to shade something. I have been drawing for about 7 1/2 weeks and have just been trying to observe other people's methods and utilize them in my own drawings. The truth is I really don't have any idea what I am doing hehe. Any specific help on how I could learn how to shade stuff would be awesome. I have realized at least so far that the direction of your stroke is vital...but I can't figure out how to vary the direction on a face to get it to pop out. Are there any lessons or things you had to do in art school that I could practice to learn that. Rudimentary things, etc... Thanks
Nordstrand - Sheesh that self portrait is awesome. I especially love the goatee hair...the way you rendered it is awesome. I would have tighted up the blending on your right cheek in the painting....but sheesh man...that is crazy good.
Everyone else that I missed you guys ROCK!
Cotron - Man I almost forgot to tell you. That evil looking one you did is AWESOME! I absolutely love it. The one where you look like an evil vampire or something...that is really really cool!

@MindCandyMan: I'll do that!!! I would like to give you some advice...perhaps it will help...although it will be nothing else, as can be read in all the nice anatomie-books around:
So what I do when I start a SP is NOT with the features of the face like mouth and nose and stuff but with the form of the total head, and I will always try to keep it loose at the beginning. Because I know one thing...my strokes are flawful everytime...and I wont be so foolish to believe the opposit and keep every stroke as a sure guideline for all following strokes. So I try to take my face in the mirror as only guideline.
I know thats hard the first time...but you should about your portrait more like a sculpture that has to be carved out of the paper and less like it would be already there and you just had to follow the lines...I wouldn't start with the particular features, I wouldn't even try to think in features...forget that your painting or drawing a mouth, eyes, ears and so on. Better think in dark and light areas, in forms and spaces...not in nostrils and cheeks...Hope that made sense...
Perhaps I'll try a step by step SP...and post it later...Any interests?

Hexal - Thanks! I appreciate the encouragement. It's hard to see improvement when you are going through it...a lot of it just looks like total crap to me hehe. I will keep pushing! If you have any specific critiques to my overall work you want to make you can post them in my thread in the life drawing section. It's called "journey of an absolute rookie...etc...". Thanks again! We artists gotta stick together!
Hermchen - Thanks for the advice...ok cool so start with the head first. This is great...that's exactly the kind of advice I hoped to get out of posting that. Sounds hard but I will try it tonight. For some reason I feel the need to start with the eyes first...I will try that new way tonight and post the results tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback. I love your stuff it's really good. Definitely do the step by step...I would love it.

MindCandy - sorry for not keeping the pace here - i barely have some time for studies now. Hopefully i'll be able to show some works soon.
Andrew - don't be mad on me friend - paying a tribute to you was just to fill the need of saying THANK YOU. Like the need to say "i love you" when you are in love, like the need to pray when you believe, like the need to say "what a mirracle that you exist, what a coincidence that i do" to your reflection in the mirror, like the need to say something when you keep the silence in front of your parents knowing that you didn't took the time to show your love back.
For the rest of the team, i'll quote keyth : KEEP IT UP.
For the ones browsing - try it, and you'll fin your gratitude words after :D
For the ones who don't browse around: I miss you. I miss Sparth and Jon and Retro and Snowfly and Jay and Wizard of Koz and taff, Deth Jester, KILLING.People, netbox and ... Afro~ LOL. Thanks, I don't know if I deserve the praise or not, the cd is more out of desparation than anything else. I've been sitting here for months watching everybody crank out these great portraits. Just wanted to be a part of this too!
MindCandyMan~ Try loosening up your hand. You want to have an extremely light touch at the beginning. Draw really light so there isn't as much clean up later. I think something that will also help you is to not erase your lines when you make a mistake. Leave the mark even if it doesn't work, and use it as a guide to compare your next mark to. Otherwise, its hard to tell if you are on the right track or not. believe me. after drawing ten lines and you can look at all of them and tell they are not right you can usually look and say to yourself. "Ok, this mark is not right.. and neither is this one right beside it... AH! If i make a mark somewhere in-between these two I'll have it!" And then, since your were drawing very light to begin with the origional 'bad lines' will actually add to the piece once you start going darker. Or if you don't like em you can draw over them or easily erase em.
BlachHawk~ Good ones. Your pain can really be felt with these entries.
Keyth~ Hit those fluids bro.
Oblio~ Great work, I particularly like the 2nd to last one you posted!
Thanks for the replies everyone!

I had quite a lot to do today so there's no SP, but at least I should add my comments.
Grooveholmes: Sorry to hear that from you, but keep on, it will get better ! And by the way, your SPs are very good altough you are using a CD as mirror.
Hermchen: Great work ! I love the highlights of the picture you did in the train.
Benzo: Great work too ! Quite an expressive picture. I like the colors.
daarken: I don't know you, so I can't tell if the pencil drawings portray you very well, but I really like them.
Blackhawk: thanks for your comment. I like the pencil drawing. I should try to use such dark tones as well. For some mysterious reasons I'm afraid of using really dark tones. My pencil drawing always lack contrast.
Rapunzel: Im not very good at black and white pictures too. I took a black pen because I wanted to get used to using dark values. In my pencil drawings even the darkest areas are only middle - grey.
MindCandy: Thanks ! I will try adding a middle tone to the pictures when I have some more practice with black and white only. Maybe next week. And, by the way, you are doing very well. I wish I had as much motivation as you. Then my skills would be much better now. And, by the way, take a look at what I've wrote for hexal. Maybe it's helpful for you too.
jester: You are right, this isn't bad. Nice work. And be patient... your skills are improving, even if it doesn't look like this sometimes. I know this feeling. Practice helps.
nick reynolds: I like the concept, but in the picture is something disturbing... even if I don't really know what it is. I think the metal plates look too rough, even for rusted plates. And the colors in the background look somehow wrong for me. Sorry...
keyth: Quite a fast one it seems. Nice colors (as always).
hexal: Just a few things, even if think you'll have already heard what I have to say. Work on anatomy. Its quite helpful to know what is under the skin to draw the surface. And observe what you are drawing. Draw what you see. Something that helped me a lot is to ask yourself questions while doing a picture. Something like how big is the distance between eye and ear. Something like that. I felt a little bit stupid doing that, but it helps a lot drawing what you see, not what you think you see. I hope this makes some sense.
keyth & Nordstrand: Thanks for the step by steps. I think It will help a lot I'll try this with my own face as soon as my version of painter arrives. Great work !

Sorry guys for not doing any SP yesterday, but i really didnt had time, i will do one today a bit later.
Oblio : 2 and 3 are really strong imho. You did a very good work with clean lines. The planes are really well defined in 2. I must say i'm really impressed, those two are really really good
on the third, your lines are REALLY precise and nice in some areas like the nose and the eyes, and i think it is really a great portrait, and a great step of improvement from you.
You will be a better artist than most of us I think
as critic the neck and shoulder might be a little small in the third drawing ... thats almost all i can find wrong about this pic.

Heh. Anywho, here's my first go at it. Done in pencil, but the scan was sub-par, hence the obvious Photoshop manipulation.

Feedback is always appreciated and I'll do my best to dish some back.
No way I'll be able to post daily SPs, but I'll aim for weekly, so that I don't feel like such a peeping-tom.

well, here's tonights. i had some serious drainage going on, hence the toilet paper stuffed up my nose. i had to stop so i could zone out and play some dig dug.
daarken: thanks. i wasn't even going to post the last one but for some reason (and yes it looks nothing like me)i kept it. nice one as always.
hexal: great to see a new face, and one that punches away at more than one spod. remember to really check those facial features. do a spod, finish it, and then look at your face for about an hour. check your drawing and check your face over and over. i promise you will find differences when you really l o o k.:chug: . no matter what. keeep em com'n.
obie wobie: i agree with the other person. the second to last has a LOT of character. i feel like you sent it to me right before you were going on a trip. and you are saying "see ya".
Groovens: i'm hitting those fluids so far: a gallon of orange juice, a pint of really strong coffee, a liter of coke, a gallon or two of water, and a pint of makers. well.....maybe the orange juice and water.:p
nold: yes, fast. they are usually fast before bed if i stay up too late.
Baco: welcome. nice spod. i would like to see many more. puleaz.

Here is mine for today. I tried myself at "clean" lines (well sort of ...) after all the advices i gave to first do SP with lines only. In fact i can see that the cast drawings i did during one whole year were not useless (we had 6 hours per week of cast drawing, at first with only lines, and later in the year adding values, in charcoal)
@mindcandy especially :
after i added very quick values with "art marker" in painter 7. As you can see they are very very simple, there is mostly 2 different grey and a darker one for the hair (and in the end i added some white highlights). For the values i just squint my eyes and try to see very large areas of tones, one light, one dark, and then some variations in those ... (in this case the light area is one only value : white)
http://erhnam.free.fr/spod5b.JPG http://erhnam.free.fr/spod5.JPG
the methos we used in art school was kinda simple : we squint our eyes and try to see the lightest values, those will stay paper color (white) and we apply an uniform light grey all over the paper except those light values.
then we squint again and try to see a simple shape of darker grey and then we apply a second layer of grey in this simple shape (so we have now 3 values, white, a first grey, and a second grey covering most of the first grey ....)
at this stage the drawing is already looking like something
then we add 1, 2, 3 or more layers of grey, everytime shorter and more detailled ...
and for the strokes directions, at first you dont need to worry about that, just draw all your hatches in the same direction, if you do several layers of hatches you will already have a drawing very solid.
the direction of the hatches is something you have to experiment by yourself later in your drawer's life, when you know how to draw accurate lines and accurate shadows area ... (imho)
@rapunzel : that made me laugh ... sorry :/
@daarken : thats great, i like this rendering, i'll try the sargent brush someday.
@keyth : in a creepy mood those days ? interesting SP, seems very personel and twisted :))

I wanted to get something more textured today. I remember Jason Manley mentioning using dry media tools to get a more natural and textured look to Painter 7 stuff, so I decided to try it today. I took a cue from Andrew Jones' Nov. 2nd piece. There's some weakspots in this one, especially around the mouth, but overall I was much happier with this one than the ones from the last 3 or 4 days.
Painter 7 - 2 hours Sharp Chalk, Variable Chalk, Square Chalk tools
http://members.cox.net/spagina/spod/spod47.jpg
MindCandyMan - Thanks for the crit. Yeah, I noticed the eyes were a bit funky in them as well. I'm still trying to break that SP no-no :D When doing linework in your SP's, maybe try to get looser and more fluid with your lines. Your ultimate goal is to be confident in the lines your putting down, but if it helps, loosely sketch your face and pick the lines that work the best and work those up. Don't worry about getting it absolutely perfect right off the bat, just be loose with your lines and try to lay them down as best you can. It would be cool if one of the Pro's could ring in on this. I'm honestly still learning myself, so what I may be saying could be wrong :D But I hope it isn't.
Jester - Hey man, this SP looks pretty good. Don't get frustrated over improving, it all comes with time. Just be patient and enjoy what your doing now, but keep pushing yourself slightly further everytime. I've already said this before, but I kind of approach art like hockey. I always try to challenge myself, always try to practice something and I always do it as best as I can. I think consistency is my biggest problem at this point, but I'm finally beginning to notice some improvement when I flip through my old SP's, and that's always a great feeling. It took 46 SP's though for me to really grasp how much I changed. Just keep working at it bud.
Nick - I dig the concept your going for there. Some of your proportions are a bit off though. The mouth seems like it may be too narrow. Good job.
Keyth - Take care of yourself man. These two are great SP's, I especially like today's. When I first saw it I thought it was a bull's ring in your nose :D
Daarken - Thanks. Your stuff is always top-notch. Even when you say you feel off your stuff still looks great, I wish I could say the same :D The last one was awesome, that eye is freaky as hell.
Hexal - Welcome. Watch your proportions on your SP's. It's great to see you working in bulk, just be careful of your observing. Do an SP sometime and spend as much time on it as possible and try to get the proportions and placement as accurate as you possibly can. You'll learn a great deal from it. And then after you do it, do another, and another. Don't really worry about speed at this point, just go for accuracy and you'll begin to shine. Keep it up.
Oblio - Thanks :D The second and third are great. Third I definitely like the best. You pulled it off extremely well. Great job man.
Grooveholmes - I feel much better today. My imagination has been running wild in my dreams, but I felt much better today than the others. It's weird how much a dream could throw your day off. I never knew it could affect my mood this much.
Nold - Thanks. Yeah, contrast is a real bitch to get going. Don't be afraid of it though. Just don't lay down too dark too early. Just remember to work up from lights to darks.
Rapunzel - LOL, oh well. Next time hide it :D
Baco - Welcome :D This is a great first SP. Lighting doesn't seem unified though. Keep em' coming :)
Littlejohn - Great piece. Eye placement seems a little off though. Great work bud.
Mime - Great work. I love this clean style, very confident looking.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to say keep up the good work. The energy level in this thread is impressively high. I'm going to post some of my own SPs as soon as I have access to a scanner or digital camera. Looking forward to hearing what you guys think.
MindCandyMan, don't be discouraged. You feel like you've hit a wall. Because you're so close you can't see that you're climbing the wall and almost over it, but we can see it. So trust us. That red background SP was a huge step up from the portraits you were doing two weeks ago. Keep the faith.

I abandoned art just about completely for about 4 years when I decided that it was time to get my arse in gear :). Andrew Portrats have been the thing that has inspired me and got me painting again. @nick reynolds - I like the idea of the "rusted plates" on top of your muscles. Keept working on it - it will come out fine!
@keyth - Bless ya'. You've managed to draw the typical "I've caught a cold" mouth! :) - today's: ah, back to the headphones ;)
@daarken - oooops, you're right with the hat. I had it right first but must have mucked it up while working on the spod... embarrassing... This sargent brush looks really interesting - is it reacting to pressure or speed? Like the energetic look of your shouting "freedom" portrait!
@Hexal - ah, a new face. And another one I want to lead to http://www.portrait-artist.org. They have valuable tips on lips, noses and so on - check it out! And do more portraits!
@Oblio - all of your portraits are great. Really, I mean it! Seems that we both are not able to see our own improvements and need other people to guide us. Thanks God, there's this thread! And you do what? You download all portraits? Wow, that's great, man!
@Nold - thanks for your supporting words. I realize that I produce better portraits when I've drawn some good studies before. When in a hurried mood and just starting with the spod the outcome is usually crap. Todays was in a relaxed mood - I think it shows.
@:RAPUNZEL: - despite your friend's accident this looks very good for a first with a wacom - keep it, in a few days you'll be really able to laugh about this. That "extreme look" went very well.
@Baco Noir - good start - though a bit dark. I'm looking forward to the next ones.
@littlejohn - previous one were better, were you in a hurry?
@mime - this cleanart lines style just rocks! Jason Manley also pointed me to cast drawing, problem is, I can't find good ones at reasonable prices (the one I like are rather expensive at ebay).
@Blackhawk - this chalks' rough look is great. I like this portrait very much. And thanks for encouraging me (one really needs this from time to time). BTW, it's my 30th portrait today.
@Lionel - very nice one, I esp. dig the hair (my old problem...)
@Grooveholmes - :D :D :D LOL, Stephen King! :D

@Nold - nice to hear the news. Now you have to post daily. About the last one - - your skull looks flat. Your left eye seems misplaced (too far left - our right and too low - or the right one is too high - anyway the axe seems off) :p
@Mr. Brian - love it.
@Sikk - he. rock. how about a more... realistic one? (a la Darken maybe :D)
@mindcandy - yo.. buddy - if you've got that time - spend more on a piece - i know you get bored but it pays off. mkay?
@Jester - YES. Definitely better - now, get softer pencils add contrast. Mind the direction of the hatch.. and.. there you are :D Very cool the last one - keep it up!
@rapunzel - hey.. expresion baby - way cool - how is your face? First time after i did this i was unable to eat :D what's that on your hair?
@grooveholmes - hey mister TDK :D - get a mirror - i cand read your nose too well, also left eye seems too low...
@noon - come on.. post'em ;)
@blackh - nice work friend - the back of your head though seems too .. big? (long?) how can i put it?
@darken - you rock BIG time. Thank you. Made with photo?
@mime - THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIPS - these are helping a lot - so.. this is what you wanted? I'll give it another try. How did you set those markers in painter? I've never did anything with that tool - and i've tried!
@Littlejohn - i want to see a pencil work from you.. realy! :) (you're gettin old m8) ;)
@lionel - sad are you?
@keyth - are ou ok? get well - try the one with the mirror in the ceiling :D
@hexal - try a skull only - try YOUR skull (don't take it off - use reference and.. adapt to your proportions... or use yours... but be carefull it only works once. If you want i'll show you :D )
@Baco - bonjour big black eyes - (too big black eyes) and welcome to SPOD freak show. Your first has a GREAT mood. We want more. Yes... we want mooore...

No SP today, my girlfriend asked me to draw her instead of me ... so i hope i'm allowed to post it here too .... cause that was my portrait assignment for today.
it took about 40 minuts under painter (with my GF posing), and some more tweaking after (i corrected some mistakes i was, and finished some of the shading)
1 hour total approx
http://erhnam.free.fr/glad1d.JPG
@oblio : thats nice, I think you should try to simplify even more, i mean having simpler shapes for your grey areas.
even try to do some portraits with only 3 values, with the frontiers between those values very well defined, almost if you selected the shaped with the lasso tool and filled them ...
when doing that again and again, until the drawing look good with just those simple light areas, you will learn to "see" in s impler way, not only for portraits, but for everything. Right now your shapes look a bit "at random" and dont really show the planes and the shift of direction in your face. (on the nose for example, you dont need all those values, just one for the front side of the nose, and one for the sides)
This portrait is good, i like it, but you should try to simplify more and more (like you did in one of yesterday's SP, with half-face, the simplification of the planes was really good imho)
also i often have the impression in your SP that your eyes are bit too close to each other, but i'm not sure.
as for the marker tools, i did not really change anything ... except for the size and the opacity slider ...
@mr brian : thats really great, you have nice colors, and the simplicity of the strokes defines perfectly the planes. I also love how there is a loss of detail in the shadow area, not only in the information we read but also in your strokes !!
@mind : you are really improving, this one is good. The eyes pops a little too much imho, because of the jet black outline. and your left eye seems drawn as if if was facing us, it is not really in perspective (the other one is nice)
@groove : i really like your shading, chaotic in a very good way.
@blackhawk : nice colors (you said you werent good with colors, this one proves you wrong :))
and thanxs everyone for the nice comments

@MindCandyMan - I know it was meant as a joke, however, do continue to start with the headshape first instead of working from the inside out. When you compare yesterday's with your first ones you can see the improvement you achieved in (compared to other people) almost no time! I want to ask you for a favour - please consider that there are still people here accessing the net with 56k modems and paying for the minute... it takes ages to download your postings... (just to give you a clue: to download a single spod-page I have to wait for up to 15 minutes - this makes it something like 45 cents, just for one page!)

FIRST OFF I want to say THANKYOU!!!! to everyone for always giving me advice on my artwork. Having conceptart.org and all of you guys keeps my motivation going to get better. Thanks so much for taking time out to give me helpful criticism. My proportions are always off and my drawing ability isn't that great so I appreciate you guys helping me out. Jester mentioned that my pics take a really long time to load. I'm sorry about that I had no idea. If anyone else was frustrated by that I apologize and will save them at a lower quality in the future and a smaller size. Sorry. Ok on to the crits.
bwiseman - Great stuff man. This is really really good. I love the color scheme you have going on. The pose is really interesting as well. Great mood. The only problem I think I see is that the eye on the right is a little too far over. Great job!
Lionel - You know what is hilarious...that color scheme is the one you use for your portraits...like the hair and skin color hahaha...so it does sort of resemble you. I think posts like this are hilarious and help break up the frustration that comes with doing self portraits.
keyth - I love this one...I saw something on the bubonic plague the other night. This one creeped me out and got under my skin...eeesh
Oblio - Keep going man! Sorry to hear about all those things. That really stinks. Make an angry self portrait. That always helps me. Do one that is technically correct then just do one on pure emotion. I keep working on both hoping that one day they will meet. Try it though it is relaxing.
Nold - You are right there are a few mistakes but overall I really like this piece. Good work. Keep working on your shading and values. Keep it up man you are improving I can see it.
Blackhawk - Or should I say kermit hehehe. Just kidding :) . I like this one. It's a different style than you normally present to us. Keep it up bro...you fixed the eyes on this one...good job. I like the tone of the red one as well. Really awesome mood and great color usage. The eyes are too wide on the red one though. Keep em coming...you rock man.
taff - You may hate it...but I love it. Looks great to me. If that's your bad day...you are doing good.
Hermchen - Your stuff is so consistent. I really love it. I always know that yours are going to be in proportion and technically well done. Kudos bro. Thanks for dropping me the hint about doing the head first. It will take a little while to get used to but I know in the future that will really help...thanks so much!
killing.people - Great stuff man. I really like this one. Seems like it's 2d and 3d all at the same time. Your stuff is always so provocative and interesting. Love how you portrayed your stubble...that looks great.
Grooveholmes - Yeah this one you strayed a bit but honestly your self portraits have been really consistent. I can see a definitive likeness in all your pieces...good job man. On a CD for that matter!!!! Great job!
Jester - Your self portraits are getting way way better. You are rendering the pieces of the face much much better. Your noses are looking much better ( they are really hard aren't they?). You are coming closer to your likeness...I can see it day by day. Keep it up bro! Sorry about the large file thing. I had no idea that it was taking so long. I hate the thought of costing you more money too :( ...sorry about that. Thanks for telling me that because other people were probably frustrated too. Thanks.
Baco Noir - Wow I really like this piece. I wish it was a little larger so I could see the detail but wow it really does convey tiredness. Great work! I would love to see more.
daarken - you always amaze me...what can I say. You can pull facial skin...look in the mirror...and paint your portrait at the same time. Seriously though...this is kickin. The fact that you have the versatility to paint stretched skin is awesome. You rock! Thanks for tips and encouragement you have given me as well.
Hexal - Good job keep it up bro...glad to see you posting everyday... DON'T STOP!...the only way to get better is to do it as much as you can. One quick tip I could give. To understand the structure of the head go to www.gfxartist.com/features/tutorials and look for a link to a book by Loomis called "Drawing the head and the hands"...that really helped me understand the anatomy and structure of a head/skull. Try thinking about that and utilizing it for your next sp. The reason these guys can just draw an outline of their face so quickly is because they have all that anatomical knowledge engrained into their brains. So start with studying the anatomy first...It really really helps. Just to give you encouragement as well. Literally about a month ago this was my first self portrait ever and really only like my 5th real drawing ever hehe.
http://www.phantomarts.co.uk/freeimagehosting/Drawing22_selfportrait1web.jpg
Mine aren't so wonderful now but I feel like I have improved at least a little. So take heart and keep going. These guys on conceptart can really help you. Good work bro.
mime - Absolutely wonderful. I love this piece...it conveys beauty and grace. Great job. You accomplished so much with the tones. Great job. Thanks for the constant encouragement and "dead on" tips you give me about my portraits as well I really appreciate it.
Mr. Brian - I really like your style. It looks really nice. I love the choice for your skin tone as well. Great job. I have a feeling that this is very close to your likeness as well because your features and proportions are very similar to your previous post. Great job keep posting!
To Everyone else: YOU ALL ROCK KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Hey MindCandyMan, thanks for the nice words...but I'm actually kind of ugly, so if it looks freaky, then it looks like me! ...Just kidding... I was trying to do it in an hour and I ran out of time, so I couldn't fix it. I'll have to watch it on the next one.

@Mind- Thanks a lot, Ill look at that stuff, I WILL post every day, except when i go to my dads or go away.'
Question to all SP people, when you draw your SP HOw do you do it from the mirrior, When i do i I have to look down and when i look up I have moved a bit and i think that kind of messes me up, The second is better then the first today because I tried to get a spot where i could just glance down. How do you guys do it, Your do you study your face then draw what you can remeber before you look up? Like how do you do it Daarken with like your hand over your face, or your face all skrunched up.

Hey Hexal I thought these might be of use to you and maybe some other individuals. Some people may consider this a cheap way of doing things but it works. In general the head is approximately 7 eye widths in length. And you can use the eye to measure various places. This is just to give you a ballpark and then you can tweak your drawing to make it suit your subject closer. I might be explaining this really bad but it's late and I am going to bed hehe. Here are the images. I will post my self portraits tomorrow.

One of those rather dark faced portraits again... :(
Jester
@Grooveholmes - yep, the eyes are too big (a mistake I'm prone to myself ;) ) but I don't think that you over-rendered it. In fact, I really like the rendering of your beard (great fan of beard, me - I kept nagging my partner till he let one grow a few years ago...). Considering your CD-cover technique you did quite a good job, actually. The left nostril hangs a bit. And I'm quite sure that your beard doesn't start growing exactly from the lower border of your lip. :)
@killing.people - nice to see you again. Looks a bit unfinished because of the large orange mass of your shirt. And I find the blurry edges of your hair a bit irritating.
@Hermchen - what can I say? Really nice one!
@taff - not bad enough to hate it ;) Looks a bit like you put Marlon Brando Pads (like in Godfather) into your mouth :D
@Blackhawk - still got a cold? At least that's what your painting looks like.
@Nold - looks like you're holding your breath - intention?
@Oblio - that's what my drawings look like first usually ;) so much for clean and tight pencils...
@keyth - for having the plague you missed the boils ;)
@Lionel - now that's a fast one, wasn't it? :D
@bwiseman - welcome. Yes, I like it. Done with a mirror?
@MindCandyMan - so glad that you didn't take my comments as an offense! I'm always amazed how well scans come out in 72dpi with 60-80% quality jpegs...
As for motivation boosts from this forum: I feel the same! :)
Noses can be a pain in the... you know.
The rendering of your right ear is great, but is it really showing that much in a full frontal view of your face? Check the size of your upper lip - is it really that full?
Regarding your tips for Hexal: :D
@Hexal - try to find a position where you can see your sketchpad and the mirror without turning your head. That's a tip I picked up from a Betty Edwards book very early and it helps a lot (not only when doing sp's but when doing any live drawings!)
@Wizard of Koz - like the sentimental look.
@littlejohn - the left half of your face is larger than the right half (and from the pose it should be vice versa). Also I think that the sweep of your upper lift (left half) is too round. This is only what I see - I'd love to be able to paint like that!
@ZippZopp - your brow is not high enough and the top of your head seems too flat. Also the shadows at the top of your nose (root?) are too prominent. However, I like the watercolor look of your portrait.

Dont have much time but wow Jester this one is a step up from all the previous...GREAT job man...you made major headway with this one! Keep it up.
Here are some self portraits that I did yesterday.
Went back to the archaic pencil method yesterday heheh:
http://www.phantomarts.co.uk/freeimagehosting/Drawing 51 pencil sp.jpg
Did this one with a ball point pen...looking in the train window. Hermchen you did this much better than me hehe.
http://www.phantomarts.co.uk/freeimagehosting/Drawing 52 train window sp.jpg
This one I did as practice. I wanted to try a self portrait without making any lines at all. I wanted to do it purely from the beginning by just using the pressure of the stylus as the defining point between features. Just for practice.

the hair and forehead is off , didnt spend too much time on that  .
-mindcandy: that top one is just great! the proportion is top notch nice lines 'n stuff.
.....
you really need to shave though:eek:
-jester, try to watch your proportions a litle bit more, measure everything you see, the length of your forehead, nose, eyes, and the space between the outlines and the features and such. and the shading is a litle mono..something :D kick some more highlights and deep shadows in there!
-killing.people, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :chug:  ;) :p :D

Check you out Coriat!!!!! You are right about the hair and forehead but wow! What a huge step you just made. You and Jester both have made great strides I think with your last self portraits. Wow great job man...keep pushing...This portrait is way more "3d" than the previous ones. Great work bro. Keep it up! I wanna see two tomorrow! Come to think of it...drop and give me twenty! (self portraits that is). Seriously though...good job man. Keep it up!
You are absolutely right about shaving. Hahahaha that's funny you noticed hahah. I HATE shaving so I let it go as long as humanly possible most likely to my detriment with my bosses...but hey...I am gonna be an illustrator some day right so who cares? Hehe. Thanks for the encouragement bro...there are lots of things that aren't right in that first portrait (as well as the others hehe) but I learned a lot through it. Peace,

wow, too much to comment ....
@mindcandy, i'm touched by your comment, thanxs ! And you're really improving, your last pencil drawing is really good. maybe there is also some problem with the eyes, especially the left one in this drawing. Keep drawing, you're improving fast :)
@oblio : this one is really good, watercolor toor in painter7 ?
@taff : nice shading, must have been quite long :)
@groove : you're funny :)
@jester : be careful with the nose, right now we cant really well read the planes with your shading, if you take out everything out of your portrait except the nose im not sure we would recognize it as a nose ... (i hope it did not sounded harsh or arrogant ... just trying to help)
and all the others, really nice works !!

here are two...the first is done today and i had lighting set up from above, but i don't think the painting really reflects the strong lighting i had set up, the second is one i did a week ago, but it was white paint on black canvas...i decided to see what it would look like inverted and i kinda like it...anyway here they are
oh and, i'm still trying to figure out which brushes work best...i like the way the airbrush and soft brushes handle, but they leave my paintings looking kinda blurry and undefined, but i can't really get a good grasp on the hard edged brushes..which brushes in Photoshop do you most use for your portraits?

i met android in san marcos the other day when he came to our school. i was really inspired by his creativity and energy and then i came here to find a whole slew of people who inspire me by their creativity and energy! i've decided to join in the spod for a few different reasons , the 2 main being 1. to learn painter and 2. to become a better artist.
i've looked through a lot of the threads and am so impressed by the skill and dedication of the people here and what really stands out to me is how mature people are in giving and receiving criticism. im quite excited to become a member of this community!
here are my first two attempts. i really admire you painter users! i have no idea what im doing and it's sort of hard not to just try every single brush in one image!! heeh. it's so strange to be "painting" and not be able to feel the paint or canvas. such a new sensation/experience.
so anyway that's it! i hope i put these links in correctly.

I want to apologize to everyone for not commenting last night like I said I would. I hate going against my word. I really struggled with the first one I'm going to show and by the time I finished it last night there was no time to post or comment. My life has been extremely rough lately, but these SP's have been a great outlet for my frustration and I want to thank you all for helping to push me along and for critiquing my work, it helps me more than you know. I encourage everyone to point out how badly I screwed something up and to let me know, I can take it :D
I have one quick question though. What's a good ink pen/brush to buy? I've seen a lot of el coro's studies and some of Foster's ink sketches and I was wondering what type of pen/brushes they were using and what brand they were using. I want to do more traditional ink stuff to experiment with and I'm not sure what brand is good and so on. Thanks guys.

This one I did tonight was extremely mentally tasking. I enjoyed every minute of it though. It was the perfect challenge for me and probably one of the harder poses I've done in awhile. The damn mirror kept shifting in my lap though when I turned the sketchpad on it.
11 x 14 Brownpaper Sketchpad - Oil Sanguine - White Chalk 1hour
http://members.cox.net/spagina/spod/spod51.jpg
Lionel - I like the Nov. 6th one you did. The thumb seems kind of funky though. It may have been how you rendered it. But the rest is superb. Good to see your face again. I cracked up at your stick figure SP. When that popped up I almost spit water out of my nose while drinking. :D
Jester - The Nov. 6th one is looking good in proportion and form. Work on pulling those values and contrast further. Don't be afraid to really get dark, just remember to work up the values. If you go straight to black, it may get out of control if you mess up an area. The Nov. 7th one is great. I definitely like how you rendered the hair in this one with the values. Your stuff is improving, great job.
Grooveholmes - You have a very interesting and lively style. It's great to see your SP's, especially with the CD ring in the middle of your face :D Keep it up man, this stuff is great.
Killing - Wow, your Nov. 6th one is awesome. I was wondering where you went, and then pop, you throw this one in there. Awesome job.
Hermchen - Your Nov. 6th SP is superb. It inspired me yesterday morning after I was doing some work to quickly pound out my kermit the frog SP :D (Thanks Mind :))
Taff - Great SP's. I really liked the hooded one. Are you doing these in charcoal?
Nold - I think what is throwing you off is your nose positioning. It seems like it may be going too straight, so it's throwing the mouth and everything below it too far back. If you look, it made your cheek area on the left extremely big, which also may be throwing you for a loop as well. One more thing, when you render the hairline, don't use a hard edge. Hair should have a much softer edge to it. These are just what I observed though. I don't really know your features well, but just keep these in mind to look out for. Good job, please keep them coming.
Oblio - Awesome job man. Your linework is coming along wonderfully on the Nov. 6th one. I'd love to see you try some charcoal SP's. Your Nov. 7th one is Superb.
Keyth - This one is freaky as hell, I love it man. I hope you feel better soon. Take care of yourself.
Bwiseman - Welcome and awesome job on these 2 SP's. First one has a little eye placement problem with the right eye, this second one is smooth though. Superb job.
MindCandyMan - What can I say, you are definitely improving. Your still becoming a little long in the face in a few of these, but the first one from your last batch looked great proportionally. Your features almost look like mine in areas, I can see a resemblance :) Keep it up man.
Hexal - Keep it up man. Be mindful of proportions though. Your rendering some features too large and out of place. If it helps, just sit for an hour and stare into the mirror. Study every nuance of your face. I noticed sometimes that my best SP's come after I do this, so there is something to this. As for mirror techniques. Try to get atleast a little bit comfortable, or else you'll end up like me and get into a lot of pain after trying to hold a head pose for an hour straight :D. Really, when working with the mirror, just try to get into a position where you can glance at your pad without having to move your head. If you do end up moving your head, just try to remember the position to the best of your knowledge and then keep working from there. I work exclusively from the mirror and it can get frustrating on poses sometimes because your head will start to creep to a side unknowingly. Before you know it, one side of your head is rendered at a different angle than the other side and it can get frustrating :) Really, just practice it, there really isn't any difficulty to working with a mirror. Just do what you think is best to get your drawings done. Keep it up man, I'll be looking forward to your progression.
Wizard - Welcome back, it's good to see you posting again. Your proportions have definitely improved over your last from what I remembered. Keep em' coming.
Littlejohn - Great job on this one. The only thing bugging me a little bit is the left side of the mouth. It seems like it's angle is wrong or it's too long on that side. Great job on the rest though. Always a joy to see your stuff.
ZippZopp - I really like your white and black SP. You may want to incorporate some softer edges into your painted stuff though. All the hard edges kill the values in spots and flatten them out a bit. I can't really help you on Photoshop though, I use Painter for all of my stuff. Keep at it man.
Rapunzel - The nose is sweet on this one. Excellent job. The Wacom is great, isn't it? It took me awhile to get used to it though.
Coriat - Good to see you again man. Your right about the forehead and hair, the rest of the form looks good though. Now let's see you work those values with the charcoal, it'll kick your SP's up to a new level. Good job.
Mime - The form on this one is really strong. You definitely popped the planes out. I should try one of these for my own SP's. Great job.
Daarken - This is a great SP, really strong style, I'm just wondering about the eyes though. They seem to me like they may be too far apart. Awesome job man.
ilex - Welcome to the thread. Your 2nd one is a really strong SP. I definitely like the feel to that one. The lines almost make it seem like string on a puppet or a dolls head. Great job.
Retro - More presents for us eh? That first one is superb. The rendering on it is definitely top-notch. Nordstrand posted his SP about a week ago I think. I haven't seen him since though. I hope he picks up again, I miss his stuff.
Mr. Brain - Great job man. I like this small value plane painting a lot. Keep on posting them up.
Have a great Friday everyone. Now it's time for me to sleep after spending an hour replying :D Night everyone.

My first attempt in Painter... (please be kind ;) ) even more concentrated look than usual. And... still problems with my nose. You should see this nobbly little thing in the middle of my face - it's really difficult to draw.
Have a great weekend everybody. I'll menace you again on Monday ;)
Jester
@MindCandyMan - first of the four is the best one!
@.:RAPUNZEL:. - cool!
@coriat - yes, it seems that charcoal is a friend of yours. I still have problems measuring proportions when working with a mirror (I cover up my face when taking measures). As for the shading: Funny thing but my family sees most likeness there where I did soft shading...
@bwiseman - no crits, just praise.
@Oblio - can't see major faults... :)
@taff - shadows on your right cheek have a too sharp edge - otherwise nice.
@mime - a bit too impersonal for my taste... Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it when people point out my mistakes - and you were by no means harsh. I have such a weird nose that it's really difficult to decide how to render it
@Hexal - nose is way better than in your earlier ones. The shape of your lips is still off.
@daarken - wow!
@ZippZopp - the tip of your nose points in different directions although both portraits are done en face... :D
@ilex- colorfuly style! second one reminds me of el coros works
@retro002 - rock steady, as usual. I'm also wondering what's wrong with Android. As for Nordstrand - I remember to have seen one of his postings the other day, he seems to be around.
@MrBrian - really nice one again
@Blackhawk - I like the sanguine one better than the eyeless first. As for that brush - check out el coros Tutorial thread in the Sketchbook forum, I remember that there was information on his tools, also a rather expensive brush (60$ or so). As I mentioned to coriat: Most people think that my spods with less harsh shadows and less contrast look more like me. They keep saying that with the contrast-intensive rendering I look either like a man or like 60 years old :D

I did an experiment last night and it was very interesting.
I did a self portrait last night and I didn't erase or hit the undo button. (Ok I did once because I accidentally put a streak across the face hehe) But I did this primarily to see where my weaknesses tend to show up. It was very interesting. I know that mime has been saying that my left eye isn't right...well that's exactly what came up...and also the rendering of my nose is totally off...I am gonna draw some close ups of my nose and am also going to work on my eye placement. Plus I am still giving myself a horse face...way too long.
So without further ado...my unerasable portrait.

OK...this gonna be lots of Crits...woosh:
@taff: don't hate your SP's. This one is a nice one (pencils with raincoat or something) and if you don't think so, just take it as a single step to your best SP ever. This isn't the best you can do, I'm sure. And wont be the best you did. Go on...improve! ..... And then I see your next one...and see my words turn real. Nice details!
@Nold: Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you...*sings*
To your art...try to learn about colors a bit. I think you could do major improvements, just by varying the backgroundcolor or so to push your Portrait to the front...brown in brown isn't that lovely :) I look forward to the next one!!!
@Grooveholms: I loke those three :) between like and love->loke ... haha. no. I mean it. those CD-circle-thingy, it makes me grin everytime I see it...makes my every day...
@Rapunzel: neat! uncompleted (? shirt, hair ?) but oh so nice...
@bwiseman: I surfed your website and found a drawing that could be another SP. But U didn't show it, did U?...shame on you...what's your profession? I am really interested in that...Your SP's make me feel drunk ;)
@Oblio: taff is right...how much time do you put into your drwaings? I think you should put more time into them...you could be so much more stunning :) but I like the sketchiness, too
@mime: 35 minutes in painter7 It gives me the creeps...lookes like a wax-sculpture or something...nice...I will inform Madame Tussaud ;)
@daarken: ...poor inspiration...almost everytime! from wich star are you? :beam:
@Mr.Brian... the Hair!!!! muahahah. I'd like to habe that hair...would give me the possibility to use more black in my pictures...haha. No, I was joking. is that the palette knife u r using? I like. I will try, too.
@Blackhawk: The second one (11 x 14 Brownpaper Sketchpad - Oil Sanguine - White Chalk) is so cool-nice how u used the direction of the hatch and the values are nice, and that perspective. I know how hard it is to get this kind of perspectives right! So, congratulations...And thanks for that flattering :) now I'm freaking happy :fruit:
@Jester: Is that color I see there? Whoohaaa!!! Did u notice your improvements? It's like you're jumping houses. Every post a jump. Hope your in Tokio and there are really high skyscrapers so you can jump more ;)
@Mindcandy: U are kind of obsessed, aren't you? Drawing and drawing all the time. If you go on so fast, improving all the time, I can't wait for the next month. Would like to see some more deailed work. And you could try to work on your gradient skills. I can see, U try to shade and render your SPs you sometimes start with some slight shadings, but then stop and dont go on.
I would like you to sit down somewhere, where the light is hard and so the shadows are. Then you should nearly close your eyes to a narrow gap. That way you won't be able to see any details anymore but only the values of the shadows, your face casts. Try to catch them on paper with very very loose hatchings...dont concentrate too much on the shapes...just look for the values...I think U could learn a lot, that way...

Thanks Hermchen...my wife says the same thing..."When you get an idea in your head you go after it!" So I will keep going! heheh. You are dead on about not getting more detailed. To be honest I don't really know what to do. I have only been drawing for almost two months and I haven't taken any classes or anything so I am kind of just winging it. And to be totally honest I feel kind of lost when I think of shading. That's why I start to do it but then never finish hehe. It seems a little overwhelming to me...what method to use and where to use it etc... Crosshatching, stipling, etc... I will try the squinting thing tonight. This weekend I will be in Maryland and so I won't be able to post till monday but I will be taking my sketch pad and drawing every day...so I will try that.
It is my goal to be as good at painting as jon foster, craig mullins, Jason Manley, Andrew, etc... in 10 years. So hopefully by the time I am 32 I can quit my office job and do something a lot more creative for a living.
Thanks for the encouragement...
I love this self portrait you just did. I saw your other thread on the customized brushes. This one looks really cool.

This one ended up a little squashed. This view of a head(from underneath) has always been the most difficult for me to portray accuratly. My proportions always seem to be just slightly off...just enough to make it look like a pig-person. I'm happy with the look of the picture as a whole, though. I like the warmness of the the colors! Also, I got a horrible hair cut today...damn stylist woman!!!
http://www.brettwiseman.com/Paintings/self%20portrait%20nov%208.jpg
hermchen: Yes, there's a drawing on my website that is a self portrait, but I did it like 8 months ago, so that's why I didn't put it here. I'm not sure how to take the comment about feeling drunk...but the piece you just did makes me feel kind of high!!
Right now I currently profess as nothing...I'm looking for a job. Anyone who wants to give me one, I'll happily accept!!! I went to school as an Illustration major, graduated last May. Seriously, though, I'm in desperate need of a job. My student loan payments start this month...crap!!
ilex: Good beginnings!! Very ambitious choices in color. I'm curious to see how well you could attempt a realistic sp. Its important to be skilled in both tight and loose techniques.
blackhawk: This last piece you just did is really beautiful. I love the fleshy colors of the skin and the greens really add a lot to it. The lighting is great too. It feels like a very personal and emotional piece. Its very impactful!!
jester: The first painting I ever did in Painter sucked major @$$!! You are off to a good start!! I've found that, usually, the more general you can be with the hair, the better it will look. I have problems with my nose sometimes too...refer to the picture above...here piggy piggy (snort), here piggy piggy!!!

hey everybody, sorry about the long absence (although a day is long in this thread :p ) i got lots to show though.
i finally got pics of all my traditional self portraits done while i was at home on weekends, as well as my special one for Nov.1. they're in a seperate thread in this forum, please check it out :)
Mindcandyman-lots of improvements from your earliest ones, youre getting a lot closer with proportions. pencil one looks good.
blackhawk-that last sanguine pic rocks, you've inspired me to go buy one of those brown sketchbooks
jester-nb for first painter attempt. i find that starting very loose with a huge brush helps to get the proportions much easier, remember you have a lot of freedoms you dont have with traditional mediums (painting over infinitely/undo)
keyth-like that last one a lot, looks like you're wearing a black turtleneck. and glad to hear you're feeling better
oblio- WOW, im with MCM, i couldnt believe that last one (the green one) you have improved so much recently, and this one seems leaps ahead of your others. the eyes are excellently rendered, the values and proportions are spot-on, and the consistent stroke direction adds a nice touch. ill have to give that painter marker a try. keep up the great work.
ok heres my stuff from november. there are a few missing. one is a life-size oil painting (no camera sorry), and the others are in the other thread i made. 2 quickies and a longer one tonight:

Tonight was a bunch of bullshit for me. I haven't been happy with anything I've done in the last month and it all culminated tonight. I spent 3 hours fiddling with this piece of crap and it went nowhere. I finally scrapped everything off the image, left the linework and threw together a crap background. here's mine for the day, these paintings take me longer then they should, i'm still struggling with tryin to get a more painterly feel and be more loose, but i always have to have a good sketch down before i can start painting...i need to try a few without sketching first, just painting! still tryin to figure out my brushes, i'm hitting the extremes...the soft airbrush and the harder edged brushes, i can't seem to get much in between......any suggestions?
http://www2.trincoll.edu/~czoppi/drawings/spod1110.jpg
i think the right eye is a bit off, i think it might need to be tilted a bit, is that correct, or am i totally wrong with that?
Ochre Face: great stuff, i like the mood and lighting of those portraits...very gestural loose style you have going...wish i could some more of that!
blackhawk: really nice portrait! i really like the expression, nice job
bwiseman: another good one from you...your paintings are always getting better, i like the way you've done the shirt and hair in your latest one
jhibbs: nice portraits, the third one you posted is great...its got a really nice serene feeling in the eyes.
mindcandyman: definately improving...they are getting better each time....i've done a few and am already feeling myself gettin a little better each time! keep it up!

sorry guys, its too late for me to comments, but i will tomorrow (i hope)
this one took longer, about 2 hours i guess ... and it's still wrong, problems with the eye in shadows, it looks weird and i dont really know why ... but im happy with the other eye ...
I started with a kinda wrong drawing, that was bad, i lost a lot of time in the end correcting things .... i should have spend more on the proportions in the beginning.
well overall after a lot of corrections, i'm quite happy with it, except for this weird eye (any suggestions about this eye ?)

Thanks ZippZopp
More painterly? Hmm.. lets see, it is harder in photoshop, traditionally we would just have to lay the paint on thick like yogurt... in Photoshop, i think it's a matter of drawing with a big, big brush and laying down the strokes and not hiding your paint tracks... i also use hard edges for the drawing, and then connecting all the shadows in the face, then airbrush the dark values, then hard edges for mid tones
i cant wait to see more of your painterly progress!

blackhawk-way to salvage that one, turned out nicely. i jave a lot of trouble reworking things, mostly because i cant stand looking at my work after its finished :p
zippzopp-thanx, you might wanna try painter if you havent already, its great for a more tradional feel. if you dont have that option, then what ochreface said is good advice. also you might wanna try making your own brushes, the round ones get pretty old (mess around with edit>define brush and you'll figure it out)
mime-nice work, and about the eye (had to figure out which you meant, they both looked ok to me) the left eye (our right) it just looks too small really, and the positioning a bit too high. hope that helps
heres mine for today, i also made another 4x5 foot inkwash (number 4) by enlarging the image i use for my avatar. sorry no camera yet, but when i get one ill post all the traditional stuff i havent shown.
spent a lot longer on this than usual, and its the first in a long time i can say im pleased with. (i'd say this is the best portrait ive ever done) i think not adding any details until i had the entire image blocked in really helpd out, ill do the same thing with prog shots for the WIP SPOD thread next time.

Okay...As promised some crits. This'll be a long post, and if I forget anyone that's posted SP's since my last effort, then I apologize in advance.
First off...everyone is doing great! So many styles, and all of which I love!
Blackhawk:Nov 6th - a different feel from you without the sanguine-ish feel. Love it.
Nov 6th PartII - The red and green is a neat idea, but I'm having trouble picking out whether the red was supposed to be shading (in which case the light is off) or just randomly tossed in there.
Nov 8th: Definitely a difficult pose, and very nicely done. Something's up with your right eye, but I can't put my finger on it.
Nov 9th- Ease up on yourself mate! I think this is an excellent start to a piece. Frustrations will come and go, and glad to see that you gave it another shot the next day. It turned out just dandy.
Lionel: Nov6th - I am jealous of anyone who can use painter, I am hopeless. Very nice, but just a couple of suggestions. Your ear appears a wee bit down too far (check the length on the headphones for ref), and your neck is a bit wide on the left side methinks. Still impressive.
Nov 6th Part II- Back to basic pencil! Very nice job on a difficult angle.
Jester:Nov 6th - Glad to see that someone still knows how to use a pencil rather than those new-fangled things. Right side seems a bit off, like the nose makes that side of the face appear to go down and away, and the eye makes it go up and away from the viewer...just a thought.
Nov 7th- Well done. Took me a while to find your left ear though. lol...
Nov 8th- You abandoned your pencil! Good one, even if you say the nose is a little off. At least you know that's your sticking point and your "hump" to get over. :)
Grooveholmes: Nov 6th- Charming! I like this one.
Nov 7th- I like all three, but really really love the first one. The blue-ish reflection of the CD is wicked.
Killing People: Nov 6th-This style rocks! I can see where the funky hair might be distracting, but I like it anyway, and the way that you rendered the scruff. The shirt lacks the definition of the rest of it though.
Hermchen: Nov 6th - what can I say but wow. This has to be one of my favourites that I've seen.
Nov 8th - So completely out of the blue. A surprising switchup from you and it's neat to see. The right side of your mouth kind of droops a bit, à la Jean Chrétien (for all you Canucks out there).
Nov 9th- This one has an almost Keyth-ish feel to it. Nice mix of strong lines and watery colours.
Taff: Nov 6th- Well done, I could never get the hang of the hooded thing.
Nov 7th- Again, very nice. That fuzzy jacket/shirt is very nicely textured.
Nold: Nov 6th- Keep up the good work with Painter...that program hates me.
Oblio: Nov 6th- The clean ones give me the creeps...I have no idea why. :D
Nov 7th- Wow. This has got to be one of my favourites from you. As one of my elementary school teachers used to say..."It's got OOMPH!"
Nov 8th- Oh my goodness! That one is awesome!
Nov 9th- I'm so glad you posted that one. It makes me feel better to know that even YOU have off days.
Keyth: Nov 6th- Creeptastic! I think the right cheek might be a bit to poofy (yes that's a technical term), but still spooky as all heck.
Nov 8th- Welcome back to the land of the living! Super job.
BWiseman: Nov 6th- I really like this one. Don't know if this was intentional or not..but your nostril looks like it's completely separate from your nose. Yes? No?
Nov 7th- Like this one a lot...nothing to crit really...
Nov 8th- Something about your work reminds me of clay. I like it.
Nov 9th- This one makes me laugh every time I look at it. Superb. The eyebrow is what makes it.
Hexal: Nov 6th- Glad that you're not chicken to work with some different colours! I'm still too much of a wiener to fiddle with odd hues and whatnot. Keep it up!
Nov 7th- Already seeing some improvement. A suggestion? Make sure that if you're going to slant a feature to show depth, that they all go in the same direction. Your eyes, nose and mouth all seem to go a different way.
Nov 8th- Way to keep cranking them out! Ever thought of trying good old HB on white paper? The white on black has a nice effect, but I'm curious to see how the reverse would turn out.
Wizard: Nov 6th- Forehead crinkles! I love it when people show forehead crinkles. ;)
littlejohn: Nov 6th- Good stuff!
ZippZopp: Again, I covet any sort of skill with Painter. Only thing I can suggest is that your ear is maybe a little small.
Nov 9th- Nicely done. Good luck with the grad school applications! They're a bugger.
Nov 10th- Very in-your-face. Check the size of your nose. Could be a bit large in the middle sections?
MindCandy: Nov 7th- Wow! You've improved so much since I started watching this thread. Excellent work.
Nov 8th- I know this was your non-erasable one, but I really really like it. Maybe it's the angle..dunno.
Nov 8th Part II- Excellent job. The extra detail, even if it is rough, helps bring the SP to life.
Rapunzel: Nov 7th- Well done. I'm quite curious about your hair...heh.
Mime: Nov7th- Completely shadowed eyes=nifty. Very nice, a little on the creepy side.
Nov 10th- Very smooth, very nice. The only thing I can point out is that your hair is sooo dark, and yet your eyebrow are translucent (and the right one doesn't protude from your brow at all). I like both of your versions equally well. The subtle shading adjustments I don't think necessarily improved either piece, but it did make them slightly different and separately interesting.
Daarken: Nov 7th- So different for you..and so darn nice! Keep it up.
ilex: Nov 8th- Ack! So blindingly bright! Great stuff. I especially like the second one, a little rough and with a funky background. Welcome to the board.
retro: Nov 8th- So few lines, yet such good definition of all the important features. Very nice.
Mr. Brian: Nov8th- Good job! And the eyes really don't look that uneven to me.
jhibbs: Nov 9th- I've been unable to check out your gargantuan painting that you posted earlier, silly computer won't load it for me, but from what I've seen of our other stuff, it must be amazing. I love your eyes.
Nov 10th- I agree. Great!
Ochre: Nov 9th- Weird colours are good! Though I must admit that I like the first one the best.
Cotron: Nov 10th- You have captured a feeling that I'm sure all of us experience frequently. Looks like me trying to do school work. Heh. Sweet job.
Sweet Jesus, it's late and my eyes are threatening to seal themselves shut if I don't get off this (#@)% computer and get some sleep. I hope that will keep you all busy for a bit, and feel free to give me a shout if you have questions or comments about my comments..etc, etc...

sorry to cut everyone short with the crits, but everyone is doing a great job. i am amazed at the progress. i recently went back to page one of the original guest sp section. its really hard to believe how far people have come.
i was in the progress of leaving a message on here stating that i do not feel the journey is worth it...that i think i must leave the art world behind for a while, when i stopped mid sentence. i began to think what would andrew say. he would tell me to take my anger and frustration and put it onto the canvas. and he is right. i cant just quit when i feel as though i have no purpose in life. i must continue forward, and i thank you for that.

daarken: I'm sure we've all felt that way before, I know I have...many, many times. You just work through it and sooner or later you'll find that its the struggle that makes you a better artist! Whether its a struggle in your personal life or in your ability to make art. How can anyone expect to be a good artist one day by never having made any mistakes? Like my teachers in school used to tell us, you'll do a hundred shitty pieces of artwork before you get one good one, then you'll do a hundred more shitty pieces before you get another good one. Over time, the amount of shitty pieces you do will decrease. Besides...your stuff is awesome...don't fret!
zippzopp: You don't need to worry about how long it takes you to do something...as you get better you'll get faster. If you do want to get faster, though, the best is probably to tell yourself before you start, that no matter what, you are only going to take, say and hour. Then periodically look at the clock. Hopefully this will force you to make better decisions about what to place and where to place it. It will also keep you from staying in one spot for too long.

It's 1 a.m. here, and I felt like doing another portrait, so I already did tomorrow's, well today's. It was quite a challenge, since I forced myself to work fast and without the use of an eraser (trying to observe better). It turned out quite bad, but took me 'only' about 15 minutes.

Sorry about this one and last night. I passed out way too early, I haven't been feeling well ever since I had to shovel manure all day acouple days ago. I've been really struggling with my art the last couple of days. I just wanted to do a head study a bit tonight and try to get the crap out of my system. These took between 5-15 minutes each.
http://members.cox.net/spagina/spod/spod54.jpg
Daarken - You of all people should not be considering quitting art for awhile. I'm honestly jealous of your seeming consistency and style. I love every bit of it. I'm still struggling with my art to a great extent. I know I want to do better, but I've hit a wall, and I seem to be banging my head against it over and over again instead of going through it, so I know how you feel. I just wish I had the opportunity for more instruction, but right now I'm stuck just teaching myself and taking life drawing once a week, so I'm having to problem solve completely on my own, and for a beginner like me it's really frustrating. Just keep at it man, take solace in knowing that others feel like you do, your definitely not alone. Keep impressing us every week, everyone here enjoys your work.
Retro - You knock my socks off. Excellent.
Everyone - Excellent job everyone. I know I haven't commented much at all the last couple of days. I'll get back into the routine hopefully soon. All I can say is this thread kicks ass and all of you are throwing out incredible work. Keep it up guys and gals.

damn, this was hard :(
but it came out pretty good i think, i'm getting to a point where to have look a tiny bit like me....
i really liked the angle, it was hard and it may not be the best i did, but i think i did pretty well, i'm definetly gonna do more of these weird kind of angles, it teaches you to measure like a bitch :D i think i used more construction lines and measured more than usual, which is a good thing...
I'm also thinking about taking portrait classes or figure drawing classes, maybe. if i can round the money up...
i think i can improve my drawing AND (more importantly) my shading technique...i really can't shade ... silly me.

c) it just doesnt look anything like me!

Hexal - Definite...DEFINITE improvement seen on the first one. And yes you are right don't let that happen again hehe (about you missing those days of self portraits). It gets harder and harder to come back the more you don't do it. YOu are definitely improving keep going bro!
amphex - Don't sweat it...we all do that. You wouldn't need to practice drawing if you got it perfect every time. Don't worry bro...just keep practicing and have fun. I always think of every bad one that I do as one step towards greatness. Cause all the masters had to get through so many bad ones as well. Keep pushing it will be worth it in the end.
the netbox - I really like this one. Keep posting bro I like your stuff. I can see steady improvement. Keep your momentum.
taff - The eyes are a little skewed. But wow! This is great. I love the concept and the rendering is awesome. Great work bro. You look cool with a mech suit!
lionel - can't say I know the feeling...haven't worked with paint yet hehe. I know you rock though...I have been seeing your stuff all this time and you are good. Try just doing an emotional self portrait. Don't worry too much about specific lines...etc...Do a crazy one and then sit down and do an all out one. I think you will like the results.
jester - good proportions for a hurried sketch. Private draw club huh...sounds cool.
coriat - Yeah those angles are really really difficult. I think you did a good job placing the features on this one. The rendering of the features is a little off. They look a little funky (foreshortening is crazy hard) but great courage to take on that pose. That's awesome. Keep em coming man you are getting significantly better...that is undeniable.
bwiseman - The colors on your recent ones have been lovely. Really awesome work bro I am really impressed...especially with the one you are using as your avatar. Great great stuff. The proportions on this one look a little off (ear is too big) but the colors and everything else rock! Great stuff keep em coming.
keyth - You rock as normal. You have an uncanny eye for your face...you always look the same in all your portraits. You are really good man. Your pot bellied gladiator inspired me to try a guy like that. I will post it in my thread tomorrow...it isn't the greatest but you inspired me to try so I thought you would like to know hehe.
cotron - Whoa the mood in that piece is awesome. I really love it. Well done. Your stuff is awesome.
Blackhawk - Wow those head studies are awesome!!!!! They look great. I mean there are little problems here and there but wow great stuff. You are improving. You really are. I love your style too. Keep it up.
ilex - I love the emotion in these pieces. They are really good. They are really creepy too which I like. The proportions are a little off...not sure if you did that on purpose though. Great work keep em coming.
retro - I love these two...great stuff man. I really like the painting as well. It has a lot of character and style to it...awesome work man. The expression on the first is great hehe.
Grooveholmes - Keep em coming. Your likeness is very consistant in all your self portraits. You have this huge bullet hole going through your face though sheesh...
ZippZopp - I like your style. Keep em coming bro. You are improving greatly.
Oblio: your stuff has been good lately. Especially that marker one...I can't get over it...wow.
Daarken: you rock...as always...kicking buttisimo
Everyone I missed: You all rock...keep up the great work.

I did this tonight. About 10 minutes. I used calligraphy ink and an old painting brush that I really didn't take care of well enough, so it's bristles were really spread and stiff. It came out skewed from my sitting angle, I may need to stand up or prop my sketchbook somehow. I ran into the same problem last night with one of my head studies. It looked fine from my sitting angle until I saw it head on and the damn head was skewed. This was a lot of fun though.
I have one question for anyone that uses inks frequently though. This stuff really warped up the page I painted it onto. I know El coro and Foster do inkwork in their sketchbooks, but I'm not sure how they prevent extreme warping. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.
http://members.cox.net/spagina/spod/spod55.jpg
EDIT - Second one I did tonight. Turned out better. It's harder for me to control this, but it's quick and a lot of fun. I'm afraid if I tighten up that it'll turn into a line drawing, which I don't want.
http://members.cox.net/spagina/spod/spod56.jpg
Cotron - I love the colors in this. Very nice look.
MindCandy - There were a lot of problems here and there :D I wanted to do quick stuff. I figured if I'm going to do horrible proportions on my long pieces, I might as well do some quick studies now as well in order to help flush the crap from my system. Your imrpoving man, great job.
Keyth - Great job man. You have noses nailed, I wish I had that kind of consistency with mine.
Coriat - Good angle, this actually turned out pretty well. Watch out for the nostrils though, one became really large, and be careful of the neck as well. Keep at it up bud.
Bwiseman - Your painting style is SMOOTH. I love every bit of it. The ears are a wee bit large on this though :D Unless of course you purposely went for that. Awesome as always.
Jester - Good job man. A thing that may help with trying to shade by using cross-hatching is to use the hatching to follow the form of the face. It'll help to add more depth to the piece.
Lionel - Good to see you back. This one looks great except the nose seems small compared to the eyes, or are the eyes large compared to the nose and mouth? Hmm, either way, watch out for that spot. Great job bud.
Taff - lol, sweet. I like what you did with this one, great job.
Thenetbox - Red X here :(
Hexal - Your taking baby-steps, but already I'm seeing a bit of improvement. Keep an eye on proportions though, really study your features and the placement intensely. Relate and measure all of your features. Keep at it bud.
Alger - I really like these SP's, as well as the one you did a day or two ago. Very nice work.
Jhibbs - Thanks man. I'm glad I could inspire you a bit to try the brown sketchbook. It's a real fun paper type to play with, especially when you get white chalk into the mix. Your SP's are improving, eyes seem like they may be too large on some of these, but overall awesome work man. Good to see you posting these again.
Zipp - Your nose and mouth positioning may be throwing you off. Your mouth is shaped like it would be on a straight forward view. When you do the 3/4, be careful of how the mouth looks. It can really throw a SP off. I know, I screw up on my mouths quite a bit still and it can turn a good SP into a bad one in a few strokes :D Overall, just be careful of proportions, seems like the nose may be too large, so just be careful of that. Keep it up man.
Ilex - Great stylistic portrait. If you want to do something more realistic, it just takes practice, practice, practice, and more practice :D A lot of practice, do a lot of life studies, value studies, etc. It'll all eventually come to you. Good job.
Have a great Tuesday everyone.

November 12th, 2002, 05:38 AM
Blackhawk.. I think El Coro said he uses the tria inks and dilutes them with alcohol. the alcohol apparently keeps the warping to a minimum.

Nice work miasmak...thought you left hehe...It's great to see you working in pencil. I think these are a significant growing step in your process. I can see massive improvement in these. Especially with the ones that are shaded fully. Great work. I can see constant improvement. You are moving more and more toward your likeness. It's so hard to capture an exact likeness isn't it...sheesh...I guess I wouldn't know how hard that is though cause I haven't been able to capture my exact likeness yet hehe. Great work...keep em coming.

thanks everyone for all your support and encouragement! haha keyth, yes i am being a weiner. thank you for pointing that out! i never saw your first sps, and there were some really amazing ones back then! great job!! not that you dont do amazing ones now...you understand what i mean! hah. i shall push past my weiner stage.
thenetbox: cool portrait. i would just suggest that you pay closer attention to your nose, and the nostril and wing.
hexal: really watch your proportions. take the time to measure the distances and lengths of things. good start.
alger: wow, the second one is really awesome. great mood and atmosphere. this image really tells a lot. looking foward to your next one.
jhibbs: nice progress. haha, i think you are the only person that puts eye lashes on their sp. good job!
zipp: good start, but i dont know about the thick paint on your brow. it doesnt speak the same language as the rest of your painting.
blackhawk: wow wow wow! haha. these are great! i think these are my fav from you ever. there is so much movement and energy in the brush strokes. i think you did a beautiful job capturing your essence. DO MORE!
rap: just be sure to look at your eyes, they tend to look a little flat.
mind: more great progress! one suggestion if i may, try not to make the intensity of the line on your upper lip the same as where your mouth opens, it will always be lighter.
mia: wow, you can really see your progress just through these last few sps. keep it up.
ok, simple one last night and today. daarkens got the laser eye, awwww yeah.

i gotta stick with this page for responses. otherwise i'd be writing for hours.
alger: nice work. it's cool to see two totally different images executed well. welcome!! hope to see more.
jhibbs: what's up man? thanks for posting in the step by step. looks great. keep'em com'n!!!!
Zippiddy Zoppy zop: hey man. welcome!!! it's great to see another one experimenting w/painter. as far as anatomy goes. watch that nose. it may be a bit big. check your forehead as well. a lot of people don't realize how big our foreheads are. also try to experiment with painting/drawing the shapes around your features such as the eyes and mouth. if you define the shapes around these areas instead of drawing these areas...they will magically appear out of nowhere. keep posting in here though....no matter what.
ilex: welcome aboard. it doesn't matter if you know the artists here enough to comment on. just comment away. keep pushing at painter and i'm glad the step by step helped some. can't wait to see more.
blackhawk: hey what's up man. i really like the fact that you are keeping the analog stuff going. i really need to break out of my digispods. i like these a lot. great brush strokes. it's cool what kind of personality you can get from a crappy old brush. keep'em com'n.
grovv'nhomes: what's up? i don't know if it's been answered before but what's that circle thing on each of your spods? i like your drawings. they always seem to have a floating sensation to them for some reason.
rapunzzzz: nice painting. you seem to have eyes that can see a lot of stuff in your face. if i could say anything critique-like...it would be towards the eyes. there seems to be that drawn look all around them. defining the areas around them can give the eyes a more rrealistic look. keep em com'n!!
mindcandy: thanks for your reply about the big belly dude. i'm very glad that that got you drawing one of your own. i would love to see some of those shading techniques in some of your next spods. one thing you can try is laying down some strokes on your self-portrait and then smudging with your finger or with a cloth in the same direction you see on your face. that can produce a solid grey area. then slowly build up some shapes.
mia: hey girl!! jeez. look at all that!!! been busy eh?? six and seven are my favorites. keep it up, up, up!!!
jester: how have you been? socail life. what's that? just kidding. nice drawing. the hair is the strongest point on this one. but remember that contrast in the face. keep 'em com'n!!!!!!!!!!!
daarken: ha ha. glad you are laughing at the weiner remark. you know it's just for fun....i know how it goes though. i get like that too. then sometimes i catch myself and say "keyth, you weinie!! what are you thinking?" nice stuff as always. keep at man!!!
great job everyone.

Keyth~ Ha ha whats up man.. That circle is actually the center ring of a cd i have to use to acquire my reflection since my broke ass can't get a mirror right now. I take it from your drawing that you're feeling less under the weather? heh heh
Jester~ That portrait turned out pretty good. New haircut?
Matt-p~ Pretty good, i like that one. I'm considering doing a few of these the traditional way too.. Got some oilpaint calling my name.
Ilex~ The broken hand looks painfull.. hopefully that's not the one your trying to draw with?

daarken: Thats awesome...you have paid homage to Arnold himself. The drawing is nice and simple. Theres just enough information for us to understand it...very good.
zippzopp: I think you need to work on trying to understand the bone structure a bit more. The next painting you do try using one light source, say right above your head and position it so that the light hits only the cheek bones, nose, and brow. I think that that will definately help. Otherwise, keep experimenting!!
Alger Langdon: Stunning!!! Your second one is just beautiful!
keyth: God damn that freaked me out when it loaded...shit yo!
Everyone else: Keep up the good work, everything is looking great.

commenting spree - wheeee!
thenetbox - thanks. Love your last portrait, if I am not mistaken it's quite an improvement!
mindcandyman - cool. yeah, not only the eyes are skewed in that one. hehe. how about starting to add more values to your portraits, or variating the pose a little? keep it up, you're improving!
alger langdon - wow, your portrait are keeping me speechless. the painted ones are outstanding!
blackhawk - I really like the two portraits done in ink, fast, lively and emotional - the first one's a little skewed, but i really do like the second one.
jihibbs - emphasized eyelashes, hehe. thanks for sharing your method with us in the step by step.
grooveholmes - did you paint that one upside-down? looks good.
daarken - wow, the laser-eye got style and stare!
matt - welcome, nice portrait
keyth - scary, reeeeally scary. I love the eyes in that one!
bwiseman - wow, another wonderful portrait, again breathtaking!
oblio - yeah. Just love it, to see your portraits everyday. I still remeber your beginnings, and now, look how far you've come, awesome!
nold - wb, I like the first one, the most!
zippzopp - welcome!
ilex - heads up, don't be scared of your painting. you're working digital, you've got strg+z. sometimes I miss that combination when working on paper! hehe. keep it up, improvements come over time, and i want to see more.

gave this technique a try, android used it in one of his portraits a few days ago....i'm still kinda feelin like i'm in a slump, these haven't been coming out terribly good. but here it is
http://www2.trincoll.edu/~czoppi/drawings/spod1113.jpg
taff: that new one is looking pretty cool, i like the simpliciity of it...would love to see it colored!
bwiseman: yet another good one....you're so consistent with your portraits, they look fantastic, also thanks for the tip, i'll keep working on it
alger: that recent one is sweeeeeet! i really like the lighting
keyth: thanks for the kind words...your portrait is awesome, i think it would look great fully rendered. as for anatomy on my portraits....i think i gotta keep an eye out for the forehead...generally speaking i have quite the nose...a good sized one! hahaha
Matt p; good drawing, anatomy looks good ,and the pencil storkes look nice, works well for that drawing
daarken: those two are great..the first simple one has a nice expression, the second one looks great with those colors. i know the texture on the forehead of my last one is off, i was experimenting with one type of brush halfway thru the painting and after erasing, thats what was left.....
blackhawk: looking good, no crits, they look awesome. thanks for the tip on the mouth in my portrait, after you said it, i looked at it and realized that was the problem. thanks!
mindcandyman; good job, they are coming along. they are quite consistent, just keep working up from there!
thanks everyone for the comments, tips and help

sometimes i feel like it would be easier if i were a cubicle worker doing a job where i didn't have to think or feel. some days i hate art so much that i just want to crawl into a hole and die but im like a junky and creation is my drug and no matter how angry it makes me or how difficult it makes my life i can't live without it. i didn't want to do my spod tonight but i couldn't help it and ...as usual... in the end im glad i did it.

Keeping with my traditional trend, I did a charcoal piece tonight. Used extra-soft vine charcoal on 11x17 charcoal paper. Tones came out too smooth for my taste, but I shouldn't expect much else from X-soft vine. Turned out pretty well otherwise I thought. Took me about an hour.
http://members.cox.net/spagina/spod/spod57.jpg
I want to do one more tonight, but I'm passing out. Tomorrow night is going to be a full art night for me, no hockey, no lifting, nothing, just drawing. So hopefully I can crank out acouple good SP's tomorrow night. Sorry I can't comment tonight, I'm closing out as I type this. I'm glad a lot of you enjoyed the ink ones I did. I'm going to be doing many more of those, it's turning into my favorite medium. Plus I want to grab one of those ink/brush pens. It's going to be fun learning something completely new from the dry media.
Excellent work everyone, keep it up. I'll comment tomorrow night. Have a great Wednesday.

I'll post my spod later this day, for now...
back to normal service... ;)
@jhibbs - yes, it shows that yesterday's was quite a struggle. The nose/mouth area looks rather warped. The right eye is wonderful, though. In today's I really like how you set the light. Again a nose-tip that looks off somehow.
@ZippZopp - first portraits in painter are heaven and hell, aren't they? The mouth looks like seen from the front while the rest ist 3/4 view - probably that's why you think the anatomy is off?
@ilex - I love the style and bold color use of your portrait. Don't hesitate to criticise - I struggle with anatomy myself but this doesn't mean that I can't spot a mistake I see on someone else's portrait. I really like today's showing all your doubts but still being a wonderful piece of art, wish I could get so much expression with just a few seemingly random lines.
@Blackhawk - those two ink and brush portraits look very lively and relaxed. I agree with you that they'd loose their charme when you try to tighten them. As for ink warping sketchbook paper - I don't have that problem with mine but this might be because I never use books with thin paper. But this doesn't mean that the page stays straight as bristol board, when working with watercolors or inks there remain bumpy areas on the paper, I just don't mind... BTW I "know" that cross-hatching looks better when it follows the forms, I just keep forgetting this when working on a drawing - so thanks very much for reminding me, perhaps one day this really sinks into my little brain.
@Grooveholmes - now don't tell me that the reflection was really 180 degree turned... ;) I don't have a new haircut but rather need one soon :D
@MindCandyMan - yeah, you're really getting there. Perhaps you should try not to use crosshatching but real pencil shading for once. BTW: I showed your progress to a friend of mine yesterday (she also wants to learn to draw) to encourage her that it is possible to improve over a relatively short period of time - she was amazed!
@miasmak - really good works, perhaps you should try to work a bit larger (say A4) to allow for broader strokes.
@daarken - I don't know which one I like better, the manga-stylish simple one of the one with your laser eye.
@matt-p - welcome and... very nice!
@keyth - oh, a belated Halloween one, eh? ;) Or did I surprise you that much with my social life remark?
@Oblio - regarding those job interviews: relax and the more you are yourself the more you'll convice them. I used to employ people two, so I know both sides. Your portraits are really nice.
@Alger Langdon - welcome and wow!
@bwiseman - yep, that's James. :clap1:
@taff - looks interesting the way it it. However, I'm really looking forward to seeing the shaded version.
@thenetbox - haunting! Thanks for that nose-shading tip!
@Hexal - try less but better observed portraits. Take your time. Watch the shapes of your face really long before setting that pencil on paper.
@retro002 - I find those eyeless one very disturbing. When I try this my drawings just look unfinished.
All the others - I'd like to see more! :)

Everyone is kicking booty!!!!
Ok everyone was telling me to do shading and get some values on my next self portrait. I was scared to do it honestly because I have no idea what I am doing. But I tried it anyways. Kept my pencil sharp and did this last night. It has loads of problems but I learned through it. I want to do more involved shading like this...this was really fun. At any rate...here it is with some close ups of the shading. This is the first time I have really tried to shade anything so give me lots of criticism...I don't want to form bad habits! I didn't finish it all the way out because it was late and also because it started to stray from my likeness so I didn't want to go way hours into the night working on something that would end up resembling me but not looking like me.

Grooveholmes - Wow this one is freaky. I love the subtle white outline.
cotron - I like this one. Really portrays anger. I know exactly how you feel. I have felt like that...I don't usually get very angry but when I do it's hard for me to get it out of my system. Good work.
Jester - Hey bro...thanks for the kind words I appreciate it man. I actually broke down and tried shading for the first time tonight hehe. Tell your friend to look at my most recent self portrait and then let her look at this one...which was the first one I ever did:
http://www.phantomarts.co.uk/freeimagehosting/First ever self portrait.jpg
...my self portraits aren't great now by any means but I feel I have improved at least at little in the 8 weeks that I have been drawing (Nov. 15th wiill be two months). Just tell her to set her mind to it and commit and don't look back. Thanks bro.
Blackhawk - I love your charcoal pieces. They look really awesome. I like the softness that you create...really nice. You are right...those ink/brush pen ones were really cool. Especially the second one. Great stuff bro keep em coming. I get a lot of enjoyment looking at your stuff.
ilex - Great work on this one. I really like it a lot. The emotion is readily visible. Last night I didn't feel like doing my self portrait either I was really tired. And I go to work every day and work like a drone in a cubicle. But art is an outlet for me...just like you are saying. Stay strong bro...keep creating...and like you said...if it's in your blood you can't help but do it anyways.
retro - These are really good. It's funny you mention the first one looking like you because I was going to say that this was the best "proportionally, etc..." that I have seen of yours...imo. Great stuff man keep em coming I like your style.
jhibbs - You have a really good understanding of lighting. I always see really good lighting results in your self portraits. Great work man. Nice to see your process in the step by step thread as well. Love your stuff.
Hexal - Don't talk about ruining the page!!!!! You are just as welcome here as anyone. Pursuing art is the fun part. No one ever really arrives...and there is always someone better. You belong here...and in this thread. Keep pushing and you will get better. It's inevitable. I think one thing that would help is if you look at Andrew Loomis' book online called drawing the head and the hands. You can look at it here. http://www.gfxartist.com/features/tutorials Take a look there and print out the section where it tells you how to draw a head an practice doing that before you do your self portraits. Getting the structure of the skull will help your self portraits. Good work man keep it up.
the net box- I really like this one. Looks really creepy and it's very moody. That's pretty good doing that from memory as well. Keep up the good work. Love the red eyes.
zippzopp - I like this one. I know what portrait you are talking about. You emulated the style well. The whites under the eyes seem a little too strong. Keep up the good work.
taff - I love this one. Really cool. I like how you left the eyes hollow as well. Makes it really menacing...not sure if you did that on purpose but it looks cool. Yeah I tried shading tonight...I was scared to do it cause I never have done it before so this was my first attempt. I need to shift my mirror to get a different position as well.
bwiseman - heheeh this is awesome. I love the rendering of the shirt. Looks wonderful man great job.
Alger Langdon - Your stuff totally rocks. It's awesome. I am becoming a big fan.
Oblio - That hat looks good on you! You almost look like a detective. I can't get the palette knife either...not sure how people use it...great work bro. Glad to see you back in the rhythym.
Nold - Good stuff man...the expression in the blue one is really good. Captured it well. Is your hair pulled back in the first 3 pictures or did you get it cut?! That would be a drastic haircut wow!
Everyone else you guys rock...everyone is awesome. Sorry I only will respond to this page cause I am at work and can't take all day heheh.

Cool thanks for the tip keyth. I will do that next time. Gotta love the kneaded eraser hehe. Hey is it normal to go through like 1/4th of a pencil on a drawing like this? I had to resharpen like 50 times and also what do you use to sharpen your pencils keyth...some people say a knife but I don't see how you could get a really fine point doing that...would take forever. Also do you always use a mirror or do you use a digital camera to do your portraits? Thanks,
Blackhawk

I'm going to comment on everyone elses later, but I just wanted to say to Mia, Oblio, and MindCandy...
Wow, great job you three. It's awesome to see such progression.
Mia - You did a great job with that batch, I can definitely see your improvement. It's awesome to see.
Oblio - Great job man, you've been cranking out some great SP's the last few days. Keep it up man.
MindCandy - Wow man. I remember your first couple pieces from Journey of a Rookie or whatever you called your first posts :D This is a giant leap, your definitely improving man.
Tonight's my art night, I can't wait to get off school. See you all tonight.

they didn't called back.
Also fortunecity isn't working anymore.. what teh hell is going on?
Comments:
First - thank you for the kind words. I'm sorry i couldn't comment on you back then bu I wasn't in my best mood.
As for the job (Jester) - i wish i could act like myself but you're not quite yourself when you ae talking about a major job payed 6 times over your last (it was in germany - we could become neighbours :D)
Hexal - oh friend (may i call you that?) please put more work on them - you make 2 or 3 each day - put that work into ONE.
I know it's hard in the begining and you feel like moving to something else. Reworking your stuff will impreove you so much. (Jason advice!!! :D)
So... have a look on the schoolyard thread where Jon Foster (if you don;t know this guy.. i suggest to start with his site :p) gives some tips on how to start a sp!
Then place work your proportions. You have to work the frorm - i want to see that note as a 3D thing in front of your face, your eyes back.. etc. Try a geometric attempt. Low poly... your efforts are stunning... you'll be advancing very fast soon. Just try to focus on an objective. For start.. proportions, and form. Ok? I'm watching you now.. :D
Mindcandy - WOW. Brother... you are comming out nicely... still scared by the mencil... right? Do more of these. Sharpening the pencils is killing you? Take revenge on the paper - try a more powerfull approach... ;)
BlackH - i've promissed a chacoal one right? I haven't forgot... it's just a matter of TIME!!! Yours are suer cool though.
Retro - you keep rocking...
Here... my first try in OpenCanvas (unfinished though)

This one came out quite nicely at first - but I managed to muck it up. I had the top of my hair too high and took a pair of scissors to cut it to fit. Hmm, I'm no hairdresser ;) Sio I cropped it while scanning. Me in 16:9 :D
However, I think the nose is getting better, as do the lips.
@MindCandyMan - whoa, what a jump!!! Great! You're on the right path!
@Oblio - Cross my fingers for you that they will call tomorrow! Nice unfinished piece.
@Hexal - keep going -and watch those shapes (esp. of your mouth) good job on the ear of your second piece.

retro - Honestly, I don't know if I like Schiele (Egon Schiele, painter?), since I haven't seen any painting or drawing made by him. I guess I will search for some of his images, now that you mentioned it. ;)
*edit*
oblio, I am filled with joy watching your progress. Your portraits a becoming really wonderful, in my opinion.

Bwiseman told me he had been using the loaded palette knife in painter, said he was liking it a lot, so i tested it out tonight...not as loose as i'd like it to be, i tend to render stuff out too much, i gotta loosen up....but i loved the palette knife. i'm pretty happy with this one!

hexal: you're getting there buddy, keep on working on them, you're coming along nicely!
taff: that's great, absolutely great. excellent lighting. looks fantastic!
bwiseman: thanks for the tip on the palette knife...much different style for ya today, i like it....really cool for only 10 min!
mindcandyman; you're really improving a lot. the only thing i'd suggest on your latest portrait is to lighten up under the eye, looks a bit dark. based on the shadow of the nose it looks like you've got a light source from the left, and a bit up. lighten up under the eyes and darken above the eye.
blackhawk: nice charcoal drawing, i like it. i think the right eye (your left) is a little far over to the right side, other than that, it looks sweet!
retro: really cool style you've got there, i'd like to see some more of that, looks good
jhibbs: another good one, you've got great consistency with your work, nice job

taff....it's very nice..the eyes are mesmerizing ... but for some reason the original post struck me more... i loved your lines....
keyth: i love the colors and the loose handling...it seems smoky..on fire...
