traditional Oil PAstel - i wanted to try this too. I think i need to buy more colors to be able to fix anything that goes wrond.
Is it a way to erase this stuff?

30 Nov is a celebration of St. Andrei (Andrew) - that's my name. St. Andrew is the protector of our country... and in this night dead people spirits awaka and are ferocious until the morning. We put garlic to doors and windows. Also... grain are plated on the day in a bowl.. depending how much it grows until New Year Eve it will show how the next crop (income, etc) will be the next year.
On another note, if you are an unmaried girl, you might dream the boy how will become your man in this night. (all you have to do is to place some stuff under your pillow).

Anyway... for any Andrew ;) around the world... i'll be drinking for you. :chug:

Frustrating crap. Please say hello to Mr. bugeyes. Please someone critique the hell out of this thing. I want someone to dismember it and tear it apart. I hated this one, I hate my entire process and everything that is a result of it right now. I need a new direction, all my art work seems like it's falling apart on me while I do it. If anyone has tips or pointers on how I could make my painted stuff more solid, better form, anything to improve on this current mess, please tell me, I'll be ever grateful to some assistance.

blackhawk i'm not very experienced to criticize this painting but I can give a few comments. I noticed that you used the same green/brown background colour as in your avatar pic :) as for the rendering I actually like the movement that there is, for example the curvy highlight line that goes around the upper lip,

As for loosing it I guess there are times we try too much :)

What's your process btw ?

I've never really painted traditionally. I'm using the tip from Andrew,. FOr the last portraits I placed first the shadow of the eyesockets/eyebrows, then the ridge of the nose, nostrils, eyes, mouth, chin, cheeks, forehead, and going around to the edges of the face. I pick the best color I can for each shape and paint the shape. After a little while I start eye-dropping colours from the painting but not much, as it tends to create a monochrome result (not that my current attempts are very colourful either :)

@Blackhawk

Yes, its tough. I think all of us who are "serious artists" often go through the same type of blockade that you feel you are going through right now. I am going through the same thing right now. Everything I do seems to well... suck. Sometimes its just from my own viewpoint, and everyone who is viewing my work says its wonderful. A lot of times I hear that situation with you. We're all our own worst critics sometimes.

For me, getting out of an artist block is as tough as it is for anyone. Usually what gets me out is changing mediums, mixing them, going crazy. I don't care about what something looks like, but what is actually translated onto the paper. In terms of self portraiture: you can get your exact features down on paper but you can make a poor piece as well.

A good book for artist block is The Artist Way, buy Julia Cameron. Read it, it helps (although I've never read it myself and should but I trust the professor who referred it to me).

Sometimes digital can be constraining. While it has a lot of benefits (my favorite being you don't get dirty while using oil paints and its speed) it can force you into a place you don't want to be. Try more traditional.

Try watercolor, its great to learn with. People are often afraid of it like its the plague, but its not all that hard once you get used to it. It teaches you to think ahead, use the paper, and most of all watercolor sometimes uncontrollable. The mistakes can make the best pieces sometimes.

As for critique as to why you look "bug eyed" is just that your eye cockets need to be further defined.

Hope this helps somewhat, I'm going along the same path at the moment. Best of luck.

@Oblio

Turp. If you've got a strong enough paper, turp gets rid of them just like it does any other oil. Gesso some paper, a coated board, or some canvas and wipe away.

wow...i havent seen this thread in YEARS, but i didnt think that i was the only one who had...left it to its ways...which look like it was the way of the dodo! lol

guess i still had my notifications on though, and here i am.

well welcome fred/ft.glitch :)

who knows, maybe we can bring this back to life?

tips for drawing? ...well, if your almost done a BFA, i'd think you'd have lots of talented people dishing out the tips to you on a daily basis, but it is true, there are some amazingly talented people, such as blackhawk for example.

my tips, from an amatuer customer-support-agent-who-one-day-will-take-his-art-beyond-the-shadows:

1) get some burne hogarth books, he breaks down the geometry really nicely.
2) become awed by one mitch byrd.
3) draw and draw and then draw some more.

i had a portrait to post, but ... i didnt finish and i ... dont wanna post. maybe i'll throw something up, if you do, fred :D

cheers; Arin
