Do advances exist for Graphic Novels?

So, my comic is actually attracting the attention of a publisher and a couple possible agents. I'm extremely excited and also extremely nervous. This is something I've been dreaming about for a long long time, and now I need to know some of the business side of the biz.

Are creators generally given/offered advances for graphic novels?

Is it worth while to use an agent?

I'd really appreciate the advice of any pros out there.

1) Depends on the publisher. Dark Horse, for example, pays what looks like a page rate, but it's all advance against royalties, which means you could be a long time waiting for any real royalty checks to arrive if ever.

2) Depends on the publisher or the agent. At the very least have a lawyer with publishing experience look over any contracts you're offered.

1. yes - though the smartest thing to do is have a literary lawyer look over your contract (a regular/generalist won't have the experiences needed to know what to look for).

2. Yes, but it'll be difficult and confusing right now. Graphic novels are in their infancy of being accepted as a viable literary/bookstore market, and not many agents are handling them - yet.
