Purpose of this SB: Archive of my progression.

A little about me:
I am 22 years old.
I went to an art university for 1 year, left due to loans. Student loans is completely evil, they come in under the guise of wanting to help but really they are trying to get that naive freshman to default once he graduates and send him into a spiral of doom... I already borrowed too much.
I've been drawing since 2006, painting since 2007.
I am serious about spicy food.

Critz, tips are most welcome!

He who loves practice without theory is like the sailor who boards ship without a rudder and compass and never knows where he may cast.

youve got alot of pretty neat stuff goin on here. I like the fact that your taking the time to do the light studies with the spheres... something Ive never been able to get myself to do... But either way, good stuff. Just wish you were motivated to do more, you could put out some really cool things with a bit more work. :)

April 14th, 2009, 07:07 AM
hey Tandy,

for your sphere renderings, it is missing some major elements: core shadow and reflected/bounced light. Check out Apathy's Foundational Course thread http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76955

Keep up the hard work!

DoubleThink: Thanks I shall ^^
[LITTLE-FEET]: Thank you ><
sevarenge: I understood your english just fine :), thanks for your compliments.
Newman101: Thanks~ I'm trying to motivate myself more these days, I know that if I drew more I would have already reached a higher plateau of art knowledge but I only have myself to blame, I'm trying ^^.
yvescy: Hey man, I intentionally left the reflective light out because I figured it wasn't necessary since they are just balls in some kind of space or maybe it was just less work ^^. I won't be so lame next time and add in the reflective lights with surface.
rogerb: Thanks man, I need to learn a lot more anatomy to make my figures believable ^^
Glebz: Haha we must fight the tyranny that is laziness!

Hey man, I really like your figure drawings. They've got a really nice style to them. Keep up the sketching. I'm lazy as hell so a page a day seems very impressive. I hope you can keep it up :)

Thanks for the comment man.

I really enjoy your line work, it's very confident, and the torsos are well built. I do want to see you finish the bodies, or maybe switch it up and work on the legs and arms. You seem to stay away from them. Understandably, they're pretty difficult but I think your work is strong enough that it would really shine if you laid out some sweet hands and such.

Keep posting, I want to see you break the first page wall.

Hey, just wanted to say the specular highlights on those spheres appear to be incorrect. Check out David Briggs' website here. (http://www.huevaluechroma.com/021.php) He explains how speculars work. He also has tons of useful info that will help you out!

I feel bad that I missed 2 days of sketching.. but what are you going to do it's already in the past.. =/

AmandaMyers: I've already screwed up and missed 2 days lol! Thanks for the comment I'll try to stay more consistent haha.
HugeHarHar: I'm glad my lines feel confident, one of the things in art that I truly want to achieve is the feel of confidence through my strokes and lines. I'll be doing studies of arms and legs because I am weak in that area. Thanks for the stop by and comment :).
phucci: I'll try to work on my legs and arms this week, studies and such!
Earendil: Hey I checked out his tutorial and I learned something so thank you for the link :).
Bagg: Dude, that site is awesome! Do you have more? :D
Anup1: I don't get complimented much on my lines, tyvm :]

i would just recommend doing more anatomy studies/face studies from books and then moving on to real life/photo's of people. Thats really all ya gotta do. And painting studies and such... lol i should follow my own advice xD

hey huge, good to see you vising my sb once again :). they're going to be more quick study rather then finished pieces, I am still new to the digital medium and my pictures come out muddy on the computer so this is more of a quick study of brushes for photoshop.

Hey Tandy~very impressive works here! the lines in your works are just great! they looks so fast smooth and brave ,there is one thing that I recommend you to do is try to practice more value in your sketches, you know ,try to nail the original color of an object, and how it changs in lighting ,that is also what i'm doing lately.
keep drawing!

Here's another one, good practice for my hand to become more familiarized with the feel of the tablet. I just switched my pen tip to the black rubbery one, it feels so much better.

hey, i like the recent stuff but the faces seem to stylized if you doing face studies from a ref. Or maybe its just because the faces are unfinished but try to obtain a sense of realism when your doing face studies.

Hi Tandy1000,

I can tell that you have a good drive in working in your sketchbook - a determination. That's what's going to make you successful. You have really nice lines in how you pull the line out and build your drawings. Good stuff.

Are you in LA, I recognize the painting model, Laafa?

I would continue getting to workshops to work from life and keep drawing from memory, you've developed a nice understanding in you memory work.

I'll keep watching,

Hope

Hey Railey thanks for taking the time to look over my stuff :), and yes I've taken an oil class at laafa before but the painting itself was done at ac's workshop~ I haven't done any sketches over this weekend but I'll definitely start posting again this coming week ^^.

tandy1000
April 28th, 2009, 03:45 AM
I'm still getting frustrated when using brushes and opacity settings.. Like if I brush over then it creates overlaps of values.. Just don't know how to fight this yet.. Gotta practice more.

April 30th, 2009, 12:15 AM

tandy1000
April 30th, 2009, 05:19 PM
so i went a bit more crazier and looser with the brushes. it took some of the tension off compared to the previous ones so i might go down this road for now.

Out of all those tuts the James Gurneys edges post interested me the most. It seems as if I thought of that technique in the past but never actually wondered about it conceptually in my mind.

Stapleton Kearn also provides a great insight on Sargents use of edges. In the past I used to add a halftone along the whole contour of the face to create the illusion of form while not being conscious of the edge when comparing it to something like the anatomy of the face, adding hard and soft edges more for stylistic answers rather than perceptual design.

I'm definitely going to go more in depth with these. The edges tuts have opened up another part of my minds eye. Thanks once again :D.

Sweet update on the guy with the hat. Just my personal biased I really dig how the side of the face is kept in one shade. It has a cool Mucha look to it, like if you went in and just drew in the last details of his ear and such.

Anyways, good stuffs.

Ok, so it's been kind of hectic around my house the past few days and I couldn't get around to do any real studying.. I apologize if you were expecting any kind of update ><. I think Mucha is awesome too, was really into him when I was aiming for a more editorial illustration field.. not anymore though hah.

I'm looking at taking classes at a certain school soon but don't want to say anything yet since it isn't official.

Girl is a 15min sketch used reference - focusing on speed rather than likeness so lots of mistakes in there, think the owner of the photo is Fertelity.
The next image I wasn't planning to do a character.. I just doodled into it from an imaginative head study, that's the reason why the angle is retarded..

I am barely drawing these days, only time I'm able to put in is about 1 hour maybe per day. I am building a computer for my mom so my time is going to be majorly spent into that for now.

neuroballistic: Hey man glad to see you stop by, your industrial stuff are dope btw :).

Coming along nicely on the figures, and the hand studies(especially bones) look great:D.
As for the creatures, while its very helpful to get a sihlouette going, try not to keep it too tight in the beginning. Cut it out, but leave the outside "Mess" somewhat visible so that you have something to play with. Allows for some of those happy accidents and its always easy to remove it later. It can even help in grounding the figure.

June 10th, 2009, 03:57 AM
Really nice studies and portraits! At the moment it looks like you end the pieces using too much soft edge brushes, and that makes up a blurry appearance that weakens the piece. That can be seen especially in the one with the shouting man (i guess it's a self portrait). The content of the image is very strong and loud, but the execution technique is like you were whispering instead of shouting, and that contradiction is really confusing.

Anyway, that's a good sketchbook! Keep it up and upload some colourwork, right now it looks a bit grey!

For some reason I was thinking it was collywobbles, but I could never find it in his sb.
Kahahahaha, that's funny btw.

You're values and monsters look sweet.
Texture work on the monsters for sure would be sweet.

dwardo: lol, thanks man! textures are harder than I thought, I fail miserably at them :(.

I'm going to re-do this weeks cow I don't like how my original design came out :L.

They might come out as squares and boxes though. hahaha.

Really? :teeth: Sweet. Prepare to be shocked. And I'm not telling which kind.
I'll send overs in a day or two. I have to remember all those shortcut keys first. ;)

If you don't mind, I'll start with your hard characters first. Hahaha.

dwardo: I can't wait man looking forward to it :D.

I liked this design for this weeks COW, he's supposed to be carrying a hump on his back that contains a concentrated amount of fat like Camels do. I don't know the science of the hump but we don't need to right? :P

I just flipped my image and noticed so many mistakes... It always surprises me how I always assume my picture looks good enough but once I flip it looks like crap. I need to get in the habit of flipping my image.

jackpot_anjr90: Thanks!

I think I'm done with this weeks Cow. I haven't learned how to apply color at this stage yet so this is as far as I'll take it, I can't submit it as a black and white so I'll silently submit it here in my sb lol.

Even in 3D, the hands still haunt me. And I'm not sure what the archer is of?
Is it Bat mixed with a Boar that made love to Man? :P

I had fun doing this Tandy. Thank you so much for letting me play with
your creation. I could send over a larger size or different angles if you wish.
eddicomelab @ hotmail.com [I won't be on much this comin week].
I could export to OBJ and you can load it in ZBrush if you're getting into ZBrush. :teeth:

Your characters are well grounded and look three dimensional. However, I think your darkest values are too dark. For skin, the values are not nearly that black unless they are naturally dark or in dim/minimal light.

Check out this guy for example:
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/9171/ryanschultzvschrishorod.jpg
The darkest area is his armpit--which is close to black. But the second darkest area, underneath his neck or his brow, is not very close to black at all--probably a 75% gray.

It may be helpful to do some value studies from photographs. Laying the values as you see them, instead of working from dark to light, light to dark, or middle to light/dark, can hone your observational--and then imaginative--abilities. :D

blog? oooo .... this one right. Tandy1000's (http://oimooki.blogspot.com) mysterious blog link, unravelled. :P

I made it 2Ms tall. 9 Arrows. You didn't name it, so I tagged it as 'Archie Bald 9'.
Though on second look, the torso, especially the lovely squary external obliques weren't pronounced like your illu, but
that's where ZBrush comes in, and that's where I go cross eyed. ;)

And thank you again for letting me at it Tandy. The honor was all mine (reads like a play).
Your characters are both very nice and ugly. Tough, and functional I find this archer, yes, yes.

Ah sorry about that my blog is -> http://hmmpete.blogspot.com
Thanks for the nice/ugly comment that is actually what I've been trying to achieve so that is just perfect :D. I also wrote on your sb that the creature was manbearpig but I did add a deer feet element in there I thought the feet of a man would be too boring and I wanted to bring the feeling of a forest creature. Thanks once again dwardo~

I'mm a check that blog out. ManBearPig, hahaha, funny I'm cereaaaal.
And yea, human feet would just stump the eyes and mess up the evolution.
Deer feet are light feet man, they'll jump crossing further than my stumpy foot can.
Good shieeet.

Ok. I'mm have to hit the books and I'll see if Goldfinger is in the Libraries somewhere.
Stuck on the head and neck area. The back has been mostly guess work. ay yay yay, so has the legs, in fact, most of them have. I just know some of the basic muscle groups, but it's those striations that are always cool to look at.

His mid torso is still freakin cool on your original lines, no matter how many times I look at it.
Don't look at the hands. kahahaha.

T1000, if you want angles to do paintovers from and do more variations for concept art. Let me know K.
These characters would definitely be fun to animate. [in 3D, none of that traditional shit. :P I love 2D, I just can't get my skill up on it. It kills me.]

dwardo: Damn looking nice, for the back if you look at brown bears they have this strange hump for some reason, I'm not sure if it actually is a hump but I thought it looked cool so I added it. You are right the mid torso is lookin hot :).

Not much of an update but just a little something on the fishy troll :D

Bear upper backs? Their trapz I guess, with some kind of fat/or really thick muscles.
n Since you're looking into character/creature designs, I hope you're fleshin out the back views also.
[I just want to model another one that's all. kahaha :P]

And in terms of texture, have you tried overlaying and messing around with opacity and layer blends.
Do multiple layers of whatever if you have to, all those random settings are bound to come up with something sweet.

dwardo: I've never done them but I'll try to do one in between hw and life :D. What do you think about the texture work in this updated cow?

Do you think it looks good enough to turn in? Should I cover the photo elements less with opaque paint over? What else do you guys think I could do.

Concept:
A creature born out of the Native-American horror stories of old. The lump on its back is a cluster of concentrated fat minimizing the heat trapped throughout its entire body, when it is metabolized it acts as a source of energy. It is able to withstand changes in body temperature and water content that would kill any other animal. Its fur coat reflects sunlight, and also insulates it from the intense heat radiated from desert sand.

Doing a character in an enviro sketch, I never do these but I plan to do more of them as well as some perspective enviros since I never do those either.

I started reading George Martin's "A Game of Thrones" and thought I do some studies from his book. This scene is where Will is up in a tree while watching in fear as his young lord Ser Waymar Royce is fighting against an Other with more of its kind surrounding him. The puny lord already traded several blows and is now down to his last bit of strength while Will is too scared to come down to help.
