View Full Version : dfacto vs. neff (dfacto Final Submitted)
December 17th, 2003, 03:06 PM
OK, here we go, dfacto vs neff.
-Draw a soldier of the future firing, or deploying his weapon in the midst of a battle. The battle does not have to be extensivly portrayed. Tracers firing everywhere will work just as well as showing the whole thing. As long as the viewer gets the idea.
-Draw, in black and white, a front view of the soldier.
-The only condition is that he is humanoid. Anything else goes.
These guidelines are final unless you disagree.
EDIT: changed the requirement from a front, side, and back view, to just a front view, as we both didn't want to do all the views.

okay dude, you'll bleed >:-)
Here's my first quick sketch:
Und ich spreche übrigens sehr flüssig Deutsch ;-)
December 17th, 2003, 04:20 PM
Did you do that just now? Man you got a lot of time. I got none, but then again I am in on this duel, a game project, personal work, studying German, AND doing DSG's everyday. Man I gotta lay off.
Oh, and lets not forget this Christmas competition at Polykarbon.
Nice sketch, but I am afraid you will need to do better than that to best me in chivalrous combat. You must hit BELOW the belt Neff...below...:bash:
December 17th, 2003, 04:25 PM
This was only a warm-up for a motherfuckin badass warrior...
December 17th, 2003, 04:34 PM
Wow, you sketch very neatly.
I usually go ape-shit with my sketches and they look like crap. But when I grab a concept from them that I like, It gets massively better. I'll probably get something in here in a day or two. I got school till Friday, but after that its Christmas break and unbridled asswhooping.
btw, its probably gonna be my ass that gets whooped, but what the hey.
December 18th, 2003, 03:40 PM
Then again, maybe I will do the asskicking.
quick sketch, beginning of concept. Sorry about the shitty lines, but I got lazy and dind't stay sharp.
what I'll do to you.
December 18th, 2003, 07:29 PM
BTW, the deadline is February 10th. If you finish before that, post your final here and in the Thunderdome final images thread on the other Thunderdome forum section.
December 20th, 2003, 08:34 AM
Here is my latest. I am making the concept more individual and less like evangelion. Quick color in photoshop. His left shoulder and upper arm were not drawn in so that the torso could be seen. I think I will use the concept, but redraw it to make the lines smoother and to make it less busy.
come on neff, where are you?
December 23rd, 2003, 12:03 PM
Here's my next one. Trying to distance myself more and more from the eva look. I think I did it with this one. About 1 and a half hours, and way more just thinking about what to do with it. My brain dided before I could finish the arms and legs. oh well.
come on neff, did I scare you away?
December 24th, 2003, 05:41 AM
Your recent design looks really cool. looks like it would be more likely to appear in a 'Rise Of The Robots' game than an evangelion ep. Really cool design again.
December 26th, 2003, 09:47 AM
Okay, another dtudy finally, but i think i'll go for a human design!
December 27th, 2003, 09:21 PM
OK, next sketch. Atually took me 1:30 cause I got stumped by the arms. They still suck, but whatever. I am not going to use this concept anyway. I think the last one looks more menacing, so I'll develope that one.
December 28th, 2003, 09:08 PM
everything looks really cool here :D i love that first one neff
December 29th, 2003, 05:56 PM
Here is some messy sketching I did just now. I went from a biological soldier ala the angels from Evangelion, or the god soldier from Nausicaa, to head designs, and then on to other crap. Just for ideas. I personally like the bio trooper head. I think it turned out rather cool. I might do that instead of a cliched guy in armor. Besides, building sized monsters with powerful plasma weaponry beat human sized guys in armor any day.
Done on scratch paper. You can tel by the type I couldn't erase at the bottom.
December 31st, 2003, 08:25 AM
Here's something new. I like this a lot. The design just has more character than the other stuff. Needs work on the coloring though.
Neff, seriously, where are you?
December 31st, 2003, 03:05 PM
I am here dude, i am watching you.
Just to much work here, and christmas and newyear....
December 31st, 2003, 03:12 PM
You're watching me...?
January 10th, 2004, 05:08 PM
Holy Shit! I just had a freakin epiphany with my coloring skills. I was playin around with another person's lineart and I colored it, and for the first time, I am pleased with my coloring job! And I have no idea where it came from. I just started it and it turned out better than anything I have ever done before. Now to apply that to my Thunderdome!
Expect my next work in a few days. The gloves are OFF.
January 11th, 2004, 04:16 PM
Quick stuff. Playing with form and proportions. Got some ideas out of it too.
January 11th, 2004, 07:51 PM
Part of my WIP
edit: uhm, i dunno... dfacto, do we need this banner thing?
January 12th, 2004, 10:35 AM
If you mean the ones that Fenix hosts, then I don't think so.
If you mean something else then please explain.
I can make one if you want?
January 12th, 2004, 12:17 PM
:hmm: :hmm: :hmm:
January 12th, 2004, 07:09 PM
January 12th, 2004, 07:13 PM
wow u dudes are really going at it
January 13th, 2004, 01:11 AM
I've been on a spree the last day or so, and I am gonna continue it like crazy. I got mega inspiration after just stepping away from the sketchbook for a week or so. Now its time to make it come to life.
January 13th, 2004, 01:12 AM
hehe, thats great
i can't wait to see what you got
January 13th, 2004, 09:33 AM
dfacto, um, not to nitpick or anything...but you could have just said design a mech :p
other than that, it's looking good guys! neff, i love your completely different take on the subject - can't wait to see the finished versions from both.
wünsche euch viel erfolg:D
January 13th, 2004, 10:55 AM
Thnx for bringing that up Phantom_head.
Here's the deal:
The rules are that it has to show a humanoid soldier of the future firing or deploying his weapon on a battlefield. Anything else goes. This means that he could be in a Mech, the mech being the weapon. However, for the final color pic, the actual pilot would have to be visible. This means that while he could be in a mech, the view must include him through the mech canopy, or from inside the cockpit or something. This complicates things a bit, but I am gonna do it anyway. But I think that this would require a black and white front/side/back sketch of both the pilot AND the mech. So those are the rules I hold myself by. Neff, feel free to do a mech, but the actual soldier has to be visible, regardless of what the weapon is.
*whew* time to draw.
January 15th, 2004, 10:13 AM
Actually I think it would be easier to have just a sketch sheet for the mech, since its not that important, and then the front/side/back view of the pilot, in addition to the final color pic. Besides, I am doing a transformable fighter, so I would have to do a lot of drawing if the mech had to be fully drawn out too.
BTW, Neff, according to my logic in the last post, the loophole would allow the soldier to be piloting anything he wants, as long as he is visible. Mech, fighter, space ship, tank, humvee...
January 15th, 2004, 10:17 AM
yeha, uhm okay. but i think i'll keep my actual design.
January 15th, 2004, 10:22 AM
As you wish.
I have mine fully visualized, and should have some stuff up by today.
January 15th, 2004, 11:14 AM
well here's my heavy soldier, now i need a big gun for him, and a action pose
January 15th, 2004, 01:55 PM
Pretty cool Neff, but he's gonna get strafed by my guy.
Here's some super fast sketch on my tablet. This is what the plane is going to look like, and thats the basic idea behind its robot transformation, (ala Macross). I still have to work a few things out before I start pen-tooling my way to a finished schematic, but I might have the plane penned by tonight.
I will design the pilot later, though I have a pretty clear idea of what he will look like.
And if this doesn't work out I will save my energy and jut make a bio soldier like my soldier 6.
January 15th, 2004, 05:24 PM
I thought about it a bit and decided that maybe I will do the giant bio-soldier thing instead, as I will have to do less work that way. Here is a drawing I did just now
January 15th, 2004, 07:39 PM
Some color (sorry about the reflections but I got tired and decided to go to sleep instead of working on this.):
January 18th, 2004, 06:42 PM
The beat goes on... and on... and on...
I really should start focusing on a final design now, but I have a few more things to try first.
January 19th, 2004, 04:10 PM
Two quick sketches from class.
January 19th, 2004, 05:16 PM
btw, I'd really appreciate a quick comment as to which of my designs you like best if you are reading this. I have too many ideas and can't really decide what to go with.
Focus on concept, and not rendering please.
January 19th, 2004, 07:51 PM
I only have two more ideas to work out and then I have to decide which concept to use. In the meantime, some good old bashing.
January 20th, 2004, 05:37 AM
A little photoshop magic and we have a nearly full image!
looks a bit too Gundamish to me, but I really like that industrial feel to it, so I am wondering how to make it look more individual.
January 20th, 2004, 12:09 PM
I think so too, it looks too much like a Gundam.. the MSZ-006 Zeta to be precise :D
Maybe you should try a more stream-lined design.
looks nice anyways
January 20th, 2004, 12:26 PM
well, only vaguely. But I will try something sleaker tonight.
January 20th, 2004, 12:55 PM
In fact i really like this last design best. I like the way it looks like 'oldschool' toy mech designs, it also reminds me of transformers. Maybe instead of trying to be different you could overstate the design, exaggerating the toy style. Emphasize the big clunky feet, give him 'video game'-alike big bad hands, enlargen his head and chest…
I think that way it would convey more character and attitude. Take something that works and make it better.
January 21st, 2004, 03:21 PM
My second to last concept.
January 22nd, 2004, 02:29 PM
My last concept is giving me a bit of trouble so here is a quick sketch as a stand-in.
January 22nd, 2004, 09:23 PM
I must agree with Ancient kitten.. I like this one the best.
January 23rd, 2004, 05:24 AM
Well, I'm flattered that you think that I drew that, but thats actually the Gundam Zeta, from the series of the same name.
I was using it to show cucaracha that he was wrong in comparing mine to it, because the Zeta looks damn cool, wheras mine doesn't.
January 23rd, 2004, 01:27 PM
My bad, i just read that you were looking for suggestions, so i went into scan mode and skipped reading. Well, then do the Gundamish one :D
January 24th, 2004, 02:46 PM
Actually for the DSG, but its applicable:
January 26th, 2004, 10:07 AM
January 27th, 2004, 05:10 PM
Ignore the wierdness down the middle as this was mirrored in Photoshop.
I like this idea best for the concept. I have to do one more iteration and then decide between the three flying suit concepts. Should be ready to go to final concept tomorrow.
January 30th, 2004, 10:49 AM
Here's my final B&W concept, without wings. I'll add those later.
January 31st, 2004, 01:04 PM
Time to do the color pic.
January 31st, 2004, 01:21 PM
Nice, but isn't his head really high up? This is assuming that its a suit a human is wearing, and not something like a mech. Just something that was bothering me.
January 31st, 2004, 01:30 PM
As you can see, it is actually realistic, though I think it looks wrong because I omitted a line between the shoulder pads.
The red is the underlay I used to draw my mech on, though you can see that I took a slight liberty with the length of the arms and the legs changed a bit too.
January 31st, 2004, 04:17 PM
OK, after a brief spat over symmetry, over at Neff's forum, I changed about two things on it, to make it a bit less symmetrical. I also realized how incredibly anal I am about symmetry, as it bothered the shit out of me when I changed the figure too much. So I went back and just stuck with this. I think it looks OK. Enough to make it look a bit more realistic, but not enough to destroy my beautiful symmetry. :D
February 7th, 2004, 09:38 AM
Hehe, started on my final and here are the progress pics. Still need to finish it, but I have the basic color down, and some shading too.
basic lineart minus a few elements.
quicky color to check out color schemes.
got my cloud base layed down and basic color scheme on the suit. I am going for a more realistic color, like that on most USAF aircraft. Still lots more to do.
Come on Neff, what you got? You have till the 10th and then its over, so I hope you're working on this.
February 7th, 2004, 09:48 AM
OH yes, I think needless to say there are changes between the final concept and the final render. Mainly the design of the forearms, and also the exclusion of the shoulder turbines. I just switched to a rocketpack cause I couldn't get the perspective looking good and It also didn't line up very well on the top and threw the image a bit too much.

latest attack with weapon thing:
February 15th, 2004, 04:20 PM
I don't think neff is gonna post anything? Crap.
Well it occurrs to me that I am the de facto winner of my match...
I guess the name is worth something after all.
February 16th, 2004, 01:53 PM
What the Heck u are talkin' about?!
I submitted my wepaon-attack-thing and my frontal sketch.
Were are the judges?
February 16th, 2004, 02:13 PM
Oh, ok. Then go back and edit the post so that it says final, and then submit it in the final's thread in the base thunderdome section.
