View Full Version : dfacto vs. neff (dfacto Final Submitted)

OK, here we go, dfacto vs neff.

Assignment:

-Draw a soldier of the future firing, or deploying his weapon in the midst of a battle. The battle does not have to be extensivly portrayed. Tracers firing everywhere will work just as well as showing the whole thing. As long as the viewer gets the idea.

-Draw, in black and white, a front view of the soldier.

-The only condition is that he is humanoid. Anything else goes.

These guidelines are final unless you disagree.

Lets ROLL!

EDIT: changed the requirement from a front, side, and back view, to just a front view, as we both didn't want to do all the views.

Did you do that just now? Man you got a lot of time. I got none, but then again I am in on this duel, a game project, personal work, studying German, AND doing DSG's everyday. Man I gotta lay off.

Oh, and lets not forget this Christmas competition at Polykarbon.

Nice sketch, but I am afraid you will need to do better than that to best me in chivalrous combat. You must hit BELOW the belt Neff...below...:bash:

Wow, you sketch very neatly.

I usually go ape-shit with my sketches and they look like crap. But when I grab a concept from them that I like, It gets massively better. I'll probably get something in here in a day or two. I got school till Friday, but after that its Christmas break and unbridled asswhooping.

btw, its probably gonna be my ass that gets whooped, but what the hey.

Then again, maybe I will do the asskicking.

BTW, the deadline is February 10th. If you finish before that, post your final here and in the Thunderdome final images thread on the other Thunderdome forum section.

Here is my latest. I am making the concept more individual and less like evangelion. Quick color in photoshop. His left shoulder and upper arm were not drawn in so that the torso could be seen. I think I will use the concept, but redraw it to make the lines smoother and to make it less busy.

come on neff, where are you?

dfacto
December 23rd, 2003, 10:03 AM
Here's my next one. Trying to distance myself more and more from the eva look. I think I did it with this one. About 1 and a half hours, and way more just thinking about what to do with it. My brain dided before I could finish the arms and legs. oh well.

come on neff, did I scare you away?

Your recent design looks really cool. looks like it would be more likely to appear in a 'Rise Of The Robots' game than an evangelion ep. Really cool design again.

Okay, another dtudy finally, but i think i'll go for a human design!

OK, next sketch. Atually took me 1:30 cause I got stumped by the arms. They still suck, but whatever. I am not going to use this concept anyway. I think the last one looks more menacing, so I'll develope that one.

Here is some messy sketching I did just now. I went from a biological soldier ala the angels from Evangelion, or the god soldier from Nausicaa, to head designs, and then on to other crap. Just for ideas. I personally like the bio trooper head. I think it turned out rather cool. I might do that instead of a cliched guy in armor. Besides, building sized monsters with powerful plasma weaponry beat human sized guys in armor any day.

Done on scratch paper. You can tel by the type I couldn't erase at the bottom.

Here's something new. I like this a lot. The design just has more character than the other stuff. Needs work on the coloring though.

Holy Shit! I just had a freakin epiphany with my coloring skills. I was playin around with another person's lineart and I colored it, and for the first time, I am pleased with my coloring job! And I have no idea where it came from. I just started it and it turned out better than anything I have ever done before. Now to apply that to my Thunderdome!

Expect my next work in a few days. The gloves are OFF.

dfacto, um, not to nitpick or anything...but you could have just said design a mech :p

other than that, it's looking good guys! neff, i love your completely different take on the subject - can't wait to see the finished versions from both.

wünsche euch viel erfolg:D

dfacto
January 13th, 2004, 08:55 AM
Thnx for bringing that up Phantom_head.

Here's the deal:

The rules are that it has to show a humanoid soldier of the future firing or deploying his weapon on a battlefield. Anything else goes. This means that he could be in a Mech, the mech being the weapon. However, for the final color pic, the actual pilot would have to be visible. This means that while he could be in a mech, the view must include him through the mech canopy, or from inside the cockpit or something. This complicates things a bit, but I am gonna do it anyway. But I think that this would require a black and white front/side/back sketch of both the pilot AND the mech. So those are the rules I hold myself by. Neff, feel free to do a mech, but the actual soldier has to be visible, regardless of what the weapon is.

*whew* time to draw.

dfacto
January 15th, 2004, 08:13 AM
Actually I think it would be easier to have just a sketch sheet for the mech, since its not that important, and then the front/side/back view of the pilot, in addition to the final color pic. Besides, I am doing a transformable fighter, so I would have to do a lot of drawing if the mech had to be fully drawn out too.

BTW, Neff, according to my logic in the last post, the loophole would allow the soldier to be piloting anything he wants, as long as he is visible. Mech, fighter, space ship, tank, humvee...

neff
January 15th, 2004, 08:17 AM
yeha, uhm okay. but i think i'll keep my actual design.

Pretty cool Neff, but he's gonna get strafed by my guy.

Here's some super fast sketch on my tablet. This is what the plane is going to look like, and thats the basic idea behind its robot transformation, (ala Macross). I still have to work a few things out before I start pen-tooling my way to a finished schematic, but I might have the plane penned by tonight.

http://img6.photobucket.com/albums/v19/dfunkt/sketch11_copy.jpg

I will design the pilot later, though I have a pretty clear idea of what he will look like.

And if this doesn't work out I will save my energy and jut make a bio soldier like my soldier 6.

dfacto
January 15th, 2004, 03:24 PM
I thought about it a bit and decided that maybe I will do the giant bio-soldier thing instead, as I will have to do less work that way. Here is a drawing I did just now

looks a bit too Gundamish to me, but I really like that industrial feel to it, so I am wondering how to make it look more individual.

I think so too, it looks too much like a Gundam.. the MSZ-006 Zeta to be precise :D

Maybe you should try a more stream-lined design.
looks nice anyways

In fact i really like this last design best. I like the way it looks like 'oldschool' toy mech designs, it also reminds me of transformers. Maybe instead of trying to be different you could overstate the design, exaggerating the toy style. Emphasize the big clunky feet, give him 'video game'-alike big bad hands, enlargen his head and chest…
I think that way it would convey more character and attitude. Take something that works and make it better.

Well, I'm flattered that you think that I drew that, but thats actually the Gundam Zeta, from the series of the same name.

I was using it to show cucaracha that he was wrong in comparing mine to it, because the Zeta looks damn cool, wheras mine doesn't.

Ignore the wierdness down the middle as this was mirrored in Photoshop.

I like this idea best for the concept. I have to do one more iteration and then decide between the three flying suit concepts. Should be ready to go to final concept tomorrow.

Nice, but isn't his head really high up? This is assuming that its a suit a human is wearing, and not something like a mech. Just something that was bothering me.

http://img6.photobucket.com/albums/v19/dfunkt/proof.jpg

As you can see, it is actually realistic, though I think it looks wrong because I omitted a line between the shoulder pads.

The red is the underlay I used to draw my mech on, though you can see that I took a slight liberty with the length of the arms and the legs changed a bit too.

dfacto
January 31st, 2004, 02:17 PM
OK, after a brief spat over symmetry, over at Neff's forum, I changed about two things on it, to make it a bit less symmetrical. I also realized how incredibly anal I am about symmetry, as it bothered the shit out of me when I changed the figure too much. So I went back and just stuck with this. I think it looks OK. Enough to make it look a bit more realistic, but not enough to destroy my beautiful symmetry. :D

got my cloud base layed down and basic color scheme on the suit. I am going for a more realistic color, like that on most USAF aircraft. Still lots more to do.

Come on Neff, what you got? You have till the 10th and then its over, so I hope you're working on this.

dfacto
February 7th, 2004, 07:48 AM
OH yes, I think needless to say there are changes between the final concept and the final render. Mainly the design of the forearms, and also the exclusion of the shoulder turbines. I just switched to a rocketpack cause I couldn't get the perspective looking good and It also didn't line up very well on the top and threw the image a bit too much.
