Splash of colour on this one, and couple of things from this evening
Find it hard to blend in Photoshop if the drawing has more stuff to render, maybe I'll try and do the last stage in Painter :\

Beautiful character designs here. I particularly love the palette that you're working with for the skull-head character. Looking forward to future updates.

Decided to get the pencil out today - I had a shock, felt like I completely forgot how to use a pencil.. too much digi stuff and not enough traditional practice... going to try and get more confident with my pencils.
Ok, some crappy Bridgeman sketches, some figures from reference and the last thing is just some crap I started then my pencil ran out of lead :P

April 16th, 2009, 08:36 AM
man, youve got some really great stuff going on in here. I really like that your doing a bit of studies and the conceptual stuff. All of it feels really solid. Only thing I can complain about is most of the characters feel lonely without some sort of extra little something to the page than just them. But that may just be me. *laughs*
either way, great stuffs :D

aye bro nice start... say going from pencil to digital, I am trying to establish a work flow... do you create a pallet? bush in multiply to preserve pencil details? then go back over with paint on a color layer?

Well... I haven't updated every day like I promised :(
But here are a few sketches and things, time to get busy methinks.
polydrawer - Thanks, and yeah I have to keep up with the studies, was a shock to me how foreign it felt to hold a pencil and draw from psyical pages!
nurraymjo - Thanks for the kind compliments, its always great to hear :)
Newman101 - Thanks for the crit, I completely agree, some sort of background would stop it all feeling like they're floating in some sort of void!
Anup1 - Thanks, I need to get off the pc more often and get down to doing pencils again, its a good feeling to spend a couple hours with it and feel the confidence slowly coming back
maeshanne - Cheers mate, Alchemy is cool, have a look at Rushwolf's sketchbook, his Alchemy work is awesome.
Keeviin - Thanks, drawing hands scares me
Verehin - Thanks :)
Mr. Smile - Thanks for the kind words, I'll try to update more often
Mischeviouslittleelf - Thanks, yeah I need to spend more time rending out all of my work really
carnal - Yeah thats basically what I usually do, I try different ways of working like painting onto a silhouette or just over a pencil drawing on multiply usually with a basic dark colour, then flatten and paint over the top. My workflow is a bit messy, some of these took a lot longer than they look lol :D
My57 - I use Rob's Brushes, the basic brush with some extra grain added. If you google Rob's Brushes it comes up with this site where you can get them
www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/goodies/goodies.htm (www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/goodies/goodies.htm)

Well damn, I havn't updated this in ages again. I was going to start a fresh sketchbook but I keep starting them and abandoning it so I'm sticking with this one. been far too lazy the last couple months, its crazy. I feel kind of inspired sometimes then other times I just feel so down in the dumps with it, I leave it for ages, then when I want to draw something - ANYTHING, I almost panic and feel like I have lost it or something, and I get incredibly disheartened with my work. I really want to improve but I gotta sort this out! Not feeling really inspired at the moment but here's a self portrait I did today, and some other stuff from the other day.
Sorry for the whining, Im gonna get on the case with it now :painting:
Thanks for the kind words aswell guys, I really appreciate it.

I love your Bridgmans studies! I've got a few posted in my sketchbook as well, they are the perfect thing for learning and conceptualizing anatomy.
Imo your environments are your strong point. The light you create in scenes with blue skies seem to be the best. Good job on the recent COW by the way, I like that the environment is just as well developed as the creature itself.

Here's a couple of things I did while messing with brushes, and some anatomy stuff from some pics I came across. The pics didn't have skin on the muscles, but it was fun to try to add it. Might do some more of these, my anatomy is pretty bad :\

Wow great stuff Mr. Gadbury! I just checked out all your pages. Looks like you are doing some strong figure studies and I really like your environments. I see a strong vision developing also with some of your compositions you have presented here. Also nice drama with your usage of light/dark/color. Just keep at it is all I have to say at this moment. Thanks for checking out my stuff. Yes I have scanned many of my pages at a smaller size for different reasons. I should start to scan pages larger as a few others made that comment. Funny you mention that panel on I think on post #73 as I am thinking about doing a finished version of that in Illustrator. Lately I have been doing these sort of retro pulpy scifi poster/pb cover type images in Illustrator. When I post them I will send you a link. Also I do have a Wacom tablet I use for many images. I look forward to seeing more of your visions.

Love your Chows , I always feel like I have to step it up a notch after you post a wip!
Keep working hard and good things will happen, although I don't think you will any problems getting work as an artist.
And the answer to your question about if I use masks is no. I use the eraser as a brush and basically carve out a silhouette as I paint. Hope that helps.
See you in Chow!

The ChoW is wonderful - The best of the bunch I think & those cowboy boots!
the backpose is nicer - I understand the lack of time etc, but I think he looks like he is about to take a shit in the front image due to the legs ;)

August 10th, 2011, 11:35 AM
I like it - especially the trunk, thighs and front arm part ~ very clean and readable yet conveys a lot of texture and feeling.

Shadow Stalker
August 23rd, 2011, 08:30 PM
I was going to say the same thing. His back is too straight, or he's a very, very good rider. :)
Also, for some reason the composition seems... too static. I know it's not fully rendered, but it seems like the main character is taken over by the guy getting shot in the foreground?
Also, you may have created special bullets for this challenge, but as a gun owner and enthusiast, I should tell you that bullets usually blow out the back. So, you would really only have one big exit wound. But, like I said, you could be using special ammo, which is cool.

Hello
I like your chow entry the mood its awesome, you have a good understanding when it comes to character design.
I think the perspective on the templar piece its a bit off, i think you need to define the feet a bit at least for closest one to us, also the legs are as long as the arms witch is not good so you might wanna keep an eye on that.
Keep it up!

im liking the new chow but i just think the guy holding the flag, the flag is breaking up the composition because of the vertical line
Ricardo Robles
September 24th, 2011, 08:43 AM
Awesome works Gadbury!
The IOW looks insane man, the palette is great.
The chow looks good too but i agree with CarlSpringer regarding the composition. Also I think the knight is competing in size and space with the female character, maybe she should be in a more advanced position, more towards the foreground.
keep up the great work!

tampirespp - Thanks, I use Photoshop - Painter is cool but I prefer Photoshop because it seems easier to use, plus you can get a sort of painterly look in Photoshop if you want
CarlSpringer - Thanks for the crit - I do like the flag but I can see what you mean - I'll experiment without it. Or do you mean the actual flag pole he's holding? I'm not really any good with composition
Ricardo Robles - Thanks, I have made some slight changes to the composition in this update, which I think might help (I hope). I'll have a play with the flag issue though
Velocity Kendall - Thanks!
Update on the Chow - I've extended the canvas at the bottom which I think helps somehow, and I'm trying to add a sort of spotlight on the figures - I like where its going but the shadows are giving me a lot of trouble. The crits are really helpful so please keep em coming :)

Which leads me to this study I did tonight from this photo (which took me longer than it looks) after seeing some work by Steve Huston - just trying to get a cool chiaroscuro style lighting going on. indeed that last chow is very nice, I think it could benefit a lot from some more risky color tones (more scarlet red on the cape, some cyans on the landscape, maybe some discrete khakis, forest greens around) because the lighting and all is already amazing
but thats just my opinion, I love the piece!!!

That's a great Mr Franzetta study, oddly enough i started doing one last night to, I would say that the guy swinging the chain should be pushed back just a little further in the distance besides that I think its great!
Gadbury
October 6th, 2011, 12:21 PM
AdrianNagorski - Thanks, I think maybe you're right - Could try less contrast on him maybe since I think the size of him is alright?

AdrianNagorski
October 6th, 2011, 09:27 PM
His size is perfect, and as with Mr Franzetta he hinted at great movement and
power in his paintings you've done the same, you've totally nailed that to be honest
I can see the ball crushing down towards the red cape guy as he intercepts with sword,
anatomy wise the fore-shortening looks to me spot on, color palette as with Mr Frazetta is great
limited as he use to do it works well, the distance issue is either the guy will the ball will
ran max speed into the hero or trip over, personally i ain't good at painting at all so if you use contrast
if that ends up giving you like a meter distance between them that could work,
i notice the chain can be used as a proportion for distance between the two characters,
sorry for to much txt
but in any case i think its great its got action its got grittyness and you
nailed some Franzetta elements so on a whole
its still a great composition and image im slightly jealous that instead of copying
like i did you analyzed and implemented your own thing using a great artist as an
inspiration i guess i'll have to work on that in the future.
Sprogis7
October 6th, 2011, 10:50 PM

AdrainNagorski - Thanks, I think the guy with the mace is a bit off balance anyway - I never really decided whether I wanted him to look as if he's lost his footing after swinging the mace or if he's about to swing it - I should have spent more time on the gestures (as usual). I wouldn't worry about copying his work, I think you could do a lot worse than study Frazetta's stuff
Sprogis7 - Thanks mate, composition is one of my major weaknesses!
n1frit - Thanks :)

Hey man, great form and value in these sketches and studies. However, I feel you should really hone in on your edge control to really make the forms pop.
