Spartan Camp #82 - 50 gestures + Optional Study of "Foreshortening"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 12th of April.

The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras....and can be in any media, digital or traditional is fine. Both with and without reference is OK. 50 poses is a challenge, but don't stress yourself reaching it! Practice is the main goal.

In addition to this, participants can choose to do a Optional Study of "Foreshortening", in any media. Black and White or Colour is fine.

:muscle: Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!! :muscle:

PS...critting each other is highly encouraged!! Let's help each other get better!

acb; Any kind of pose or figure will do. You can choose animals, humans, anything. You can use reference images or draw from imagination, both fine. Just check the previous rounds to get an idea!
You can do an optional study of foreshortening. This means you draw something as if it is closer to the viewer. Just check google or wikipedia for a more accurate description.
Good luck! And it's no problem if you don't reach 50. We all started somewhere.

Alright, so these are all referenced from photos of the Iron Man movie, so possibly spoilery for those who haven't seen it. I didn't draw any of the faces, though, so it shouldn't be too bad. If anyone wants me to, I can put these in links, instead.

thedo12; Sure! see you later. I'll post a new topic tomorrow.
Great Distance; Big pictures are fine. I can 'recognize' some scenes from the film by seeing those poses. Seems like a good exercise, because of the variation. You just took screenshots, and used those for reference? Like the crawling ones, and the coloured walking poses of the 2nd picture most. No specific crits, which I hate. I'll contact you when I think of something ;|

Its good to see more participants, and interest in SC. This week I wanted to draw from a different ref source, but didn't have the time. So I used my handy old Pose File Book again and did them on my lunch break. I unfortunately didn't have time to do the "optional study" but since it was foreshortening, I tried to do a few foreshortened poses which are really hard to gesture. I also did a page of poses from imagination, which are fun to do.

Great Distance Really like the movie still ref idea. Im gonna have to try it. I also like those painterly gestures, you really captured the mood and light quickly. Reminds me of a thumbnailing gouache technique. Good Job

Anthis Your pencil ones have a nice softness and flow. Really digging the pen sketches, really raw, and have a lot of energy to them. Nice motion to.

Thedo12 Hope to see you next week.

Good Job everyone. Look forward to seeing more #83

Yeah, I took screenshots. I sped up the film waiting for scenes where you could see pretty much the whole body of some character and then paused and took a screenshot. I also had an idea that I could try out sometime. You see, I happen to have a simple animation program on my computer. If I slowed down the video enough I could take a screenshot of every frame and try to recreate a certain scene by drawing the frames. But it's just an idea.

And thanks, those poses are some of the ones I enjoyed the most, too. I just wish I had time to color more of them, but at some point I just wanted to get the whole thing finished. ;)

Also, solid poses again, Anthis.

Asettimi - Good to see you here again! Good work with the poses. I see some flaws there, but I think I should leave critting for someone else for now. I think my personal advice would be to pay some extra attention to proportions. Can never hurt, at least. Mostly it's just that the torso looks too long to me at places. But I'm not sure if that's really the problem, so the best you can do is to try and find out for yourself. Great job, anyway.

The thing I like about the movie stills is that you can really find out how a movement follows another - how one pose leads to another, different pose. I think that's the best thing about it. But it's also fun to draw people you've grown attached to during the watching of a movie. I think that maybe that kind of an emotional attachment would make you remember a certain pose better. Especially if it's linked to a scene that you already remember vividly from watching the movie.

Great Distance; Thanks for the info! Will give it a shot myself this week. The animation sounds great. I think you can even line up a row of images in photoshop or some viewer to form a simple animation. Good call.
Asettimi; Cheers! I find pens tough to use, fun though.
Those are some really good and challenging poses you have there. I guess I should start looking for posebooks.
Very solid studies there. Comparing those with the studies from imagination, you can see some differences. In the imagination poses, the shoulder areas look very tense. As opposed the the fluent ref studies. Think it goes for the pelvises too, although the pelvis just seems to be a pain in general..
Think its a pretty good thing to include the faces when you're drawing from ref. I notice myself that I'm actually having trouble combining body and head since I'm studying those separately. Great going!

Thanks for the feedback.

Anthis I agree, when I sketch from imagination I tend to keep head vertical, and hips/shoulders in same plane, kind of boring actually. But im sure if I keep SC up week to week, some of the poses, and overlapping shapes will start to come out in my imagination sketches. Also, since Ive been doing pen studies, if you get some proportions off, you are stuck with the line, if I do this, I keep going with the pose as much as I can, usually some part of the drawing will have some good things going on, and its good to see your good drawings next to your bad ones, hepls see your growth, and your weaknesses.

As for the PoseFile books, you get alot of poses in one book. I actually just picked up a new one this week off ebay for cheaper than I got my old one when it was in print over 10 years ago. It has some really nice perspective shots, which should be a challenge. It also has lighted poses with nice core shadows. Unfortunately, Its only females, so I guess Ill have to go online for some good male ref, probably try the websites you suggested. Im thinking of doing some quick studies in pencil, or maybe charcoal this week also.

Faces, they can be a pain. Ive been including them, to practice posing the head as well, and better understand how to change the eyeline axis. I tend to also keep them straight up with level eyeline, which makes the pose look stiff.
