I don't remember the Red Planet being all that completely inhospitable from descriptions I got way back in astronomy class so I didn't go too overboard with the battle-suit. It is basically just a cross between what soldiers already wear and a small space suit (with a few exceptions). Plus, this was a great excuse to give a "Full Metal Jacket" treatment to the helmet...

mine is more of a mech, i guess. the pilot is right on the top where that little window is. the driver is equipped with a big mofo gun and sword to skewer whoever winds him up.

Here is a preliminary of mine. about 40 minutes so far. This is actually my first real attempt at coloring. I have done stuff before, but I will actually try to go all the way with this.

btw, thats 40 minutes including about 10 minutes of concept development. And I didn't use masking so it took me too long to do the shading, bleh. Got that taken care of now.

this uniform is for a future Mars war when we our scientists have manufactured ingestible pills that allow us to breathe their atmosphere. (I just needed a reason for not creating a full helmet.) I really love that black and white sketchy style. What is this Hawkprey people keep mentioning?

Hawkprey is the artist who surely wasn't the first, but is very well one of the coolest for using this fast sketchy digital ink/scratchboard technique. I think that he is the one who introduced the style to a lot of us and so some give a nod to him when they are working in that style.
