Round #139
Topic:
Just Eats the Skin!!
Creature Description: Just Eats the Skin!! Design a new creature that preys on other creatures but only eats its victim's skin, hide, etc and then discards the rest. I suppose some members who like to think outside the box will want to ask: "Can it be something that eats the shell off a turtle? Can it be something that just eats the chitin off a shrimp?" Meh. Nah. Try to get bloody. Think Silence of the Lambs. We had Gut munchers and heart devourers before and those rounds turned out pretty good... pretty inspired. So, yes... creatures that eat the skin or hide off another creature is the deal this week. Rawk on.
Deadline:
Monday, 13 April 2009
note: The deadline won't be EXACTLY after a week...it can last up to 24 hours more, i am human and have to work also, you know ;)

My first post...and its in COW!
Im in for this. Im thinking thin, emaciated, skull faced horrors, their crimson stained pale flesh stretched against their spiny form, long nailed fingers slowly and lovingly tearing the hide from its prey. I shall call them the Shibboth...they shall be born of the 1st Level of Hell, Gehenna, and creep forth to deal "justice" to those who would flay sacred animals.

Interesting topic!
I sketched this last night. I had in mind a domestic cat-sized creature that would jump (from the ground, from trees, from anywhere) in small groups to the back of bigger creatures to feed on their thick skins. Their saliva would prevent the bigger creature to get infections and also ease the healing and renewal of the part that has been eaten...something like that.
They would use their razor-sharp lower beaks to make precise incisions, like a surgeon using a scalpel, so then extracts the slices of skin with their hardened claws.
Design-wise, I combined gorillas and mandrills (stance and body parts), poodle dogs (for their curly hair), and toucans (their serrated tongue).
I might go out of town for the rest of the week, but I think I'll be able to finish this. I still have to do a rough sketch to show how do they use their beaks. I'll work on that tonite.
See you guys later!
skullbeast - I think you should try working with a different color palette, since your designs are looking kinda the same way, unless you're looking for them to be part of a collection or group of designs related to each other, which is cool. Just an observation.

Quick sketch... not really pushing anything with the design but still fun.
Reymus
April 7th, 2009, 06:20 PM
This is my initial rough, I think Luness' idea is universal with this topic, a creature that eats only the skin would have tissue problems of it's own. I thought of a carnivore that has extreme skin problems, infections, rashes, peeling, etc. and has to eat the skins off a creature that has flawless skin.
G@m
April 7th, 2009, 07:08 PM
My first idea, its very rough, the idea behind it is, since it has a small, very small mouth he can't fit in it anything beside skin! With his small protuding teeth he bites the skin. Lame idea i know :\ i'll try to think something better after some sleep!

rushwolf - hahaha, alright. I use a lead holder (2mm B leads) for gesturing and dark rendering, and an F pencil for light to medium shading. Kneadable eraser, standard white eraser, and generic battery-powered eraser (small tip). Now, post something!
Reymus - a synonym of universal is generic, so do you mean that my idea is too common or generic? design-wise or the back-story, or both? please enlight me.
Soooooo, good start with the sketches guys!
Keep it up!

Alrighty.
Here's a quick Wip. I thought I'd make this a microscopic creature that would attack in large numbers. I thought it made more sense than a larger creature that would eat skin but leave everything else. Early days yet. Meh. Crits welcome.
Crowsrock
April 8th, 2009, 01:47 AM
First sketch. This creatures clings to its prey and rasps the skin from its back using an abrasive tongue. It's back is armoured to prevent crushing, if the prey chooses to roll on its attacker to get rid of it.

Arthur 'Two Sheds' : Crap! i was gonna do the same thing... a smaller creature as a skin eater... ah well... time to be a little more original :/
due to your' superior speed.... nice creature idea! ... just wrote last exam... so onto WIPS for this this afternoon :D
Reymus: Like it!
Chuck,mate.
April 8th, 2009, 05:46 AM
luness - boy you`re as original as they come, brother... I love your style to bits. and this horrific creature of yours is no different.
perhaps it could use a bit more of a skin-eating-action thing presented in some way. as it stands right now, your creature might be anything and everything.... great design, never the less.
reymus - hehehe... sick. :) I can actually hear the tearing of the hide. cool design too.
Pat.
Arthur 'Two Sheds'

Jerik - Hahaha! Sorry man. If you wanna do a microscopic animal too, then go right ahead :). there's gotta be a billion different ways to go about it ;).
Michael Jaecks
April 8th, 2009, 08:02 AM
I'm really surprised we haven't seen any with scissor or garden shear like beaks or mandibles... something that could tear the skin off the body and then cut it to pieces like fabric. luness' is sort of like that, but more nubby.
Flat like a knife you'd use to skin a fish, but then something that can also open like a jaw and cut it into smaller pieces for consumption. Seeing people cut chicken skin with kitchen shears also makes me think of ideas...
Maybe I have too good of table manners for eating skin. :)
Michael.
lkjhgfdsa
April 8th, 2009, 08:54 AM
Killerwhales flick seals and penguins with their mouths to skin them.
Some skin microbes produce enzymes which cause skincells in the dermal layer to begin storing nutrients particular to their dietary needs in the vaccuoles within the cells.
I have no wacom this week or next, so jack from me except critiques and blargs untill May...
Reymus
April 8th, 2009, 09:47 AM
luness - of course not! lol, not generic but that to me, any creature that specifically eats only the skin does so for a variety of reasons, and it seems reasonable that it would have massive skin problems of it's own, and it compensates for it.
Cats and lions for example, lick the skin off prey sometimes before starting to eat. I don't exactly know why, but if I remember right, it's to ease the consumption of the meat (like taking skin off chicken).

The right claw is used as a ripping device like a knife, whereas the left one is used to pluck away the skin.

Thatīs a very WieRD looking concept. Itīll be interesting to see that evolve with your signiture style.
Smashed_Pumpkin
Well, isnīt pushing it fun too? Meebbe more? :P
Reymus
Itīs looking freaky but, begging your pardon luness, I donīt think the concept of bad skin gotta eat good skin is universal for this concept.
Arthur 'Two Sheds
Good to see somebody else opted for small but MANY.
the rooster
Thatīs a cool photo. ;) But maybe the tongue and the mouth are really cool?
Crowsrock
Thatīs a really freaky concept. I am curious to see more.

Thatīs very cool idea.

Kinda reminds of a deep sea anglerfish and carnivorous plant. Now work on the details and add more contrast. Maybe a second light with color? :yayca:
anibawl
Hmm. Very crablike. Maybe with a more dynamic perspective?
LauraGarabedian
Itīs good to see the new members to participate, and even I am no regular here, my guess would be that your entry is too regular dinosaur.
Michael Jaecks
I know exactly what you mean but frankly I was happy to not see them. :D
Ok, theyīre gonna be HELL FUCKING LOT of them. They swarm. And they sting the victims first to stun. Then they ram! their lower mandibles under the skin and the legs in the skin. Then they push forward and the upper mandible claws "rake" the skin in and the sharp corners of the mouth cut a thread of skin off. One creature consumes about three feet of skin but they attack in clouds about a 1000. Then the lay thousands of microeggs in the blood and leave. The carcass will be found by scavengers and the bug will have itīs next host.
Whatīcha think?

Saw Anibawl's Crab thing, and now all I can think of is a creature that takes of the skin extremely carefully. You know like how its lucky if you can peel all the skin off the orange in one piece.
So now I'm thinking he hangs up the sheets to dry, and eats them when they're 'matured'.
Maybe it keeps the victims alive, ending up with a sort of 'flesh' farm over time.
Creepy.

Update.
Luvecerviere
April 9th, 2009, 02:19 AM
Skullbeast: I worry that your concept might be moving too far from skin eater. Is there a reason the body is so massacred? Perhaps, your creature is a scavenger and someone left the shredded body out? Or, it beats the prey to death and then devours just the skin? Messy eater? I do like the change in color from where it was originally.

Got the flu, sucks to be this late but better than not trying:) loving everyone's take on this, gore gets the masses going LOL. here's my concept of the skin eater...Flayer Maggots!!!
skullbeast
April 9th, 2009, 02:55 AM
Luvecerviere - ahh... the rake teeth only shred. its the beasts tearing power plus organs under pressure (from the stretching skin) that causes the mess. the face and leg skin has all ready been eaten. I would love to see a clean skinning. even just a scalping is horribly messy. maybe under fast moving water it wouldn't be. I have seen lots of forensic images throughout the years and I used a real image of a cut fish for reference for the innards on this one. I disagree with wandering off course, this ship is headed for the mainland. thanks for the kudos!

Cheers mate. At first I thought, thatīs a beak. No wait, itīs horn on the chin. Now I am not sure anymore. Izzat Pa or PS? If PS what brushes please?
Cbonner
I like how it holds the skull between the fingertips. Like a high society tea cup.
Tyrus
That is one really freaking cool concept. I am anxious to see where youīre going with this.
Okey dokey, I am getting there I think. The mouth of the creature is about 1,5 cm wide. I allready have a huge background story for it. Normally they would feed of gigantic other creatures that would ignore the scrapings mostly. Like our rhinos and parasites. Occasionally other, smaller creatures wander in their breeding grounds and perish in the (for them) massive onslaught.
First I thought theyīd need to fold the wings back but now I rather they just move them upright and because theyīve got kinda hard spikes on em theyīd use em as protection so that they canīt be brushed off. Plus talon like pincers to secure hold in the skin.
Still not sure about the colors or the carapace, hmmm. Atm itīs a muscle tube that is partially protected by bony plates.
Suggestion anyone?

Grabbed a handful of time for some comments, overall everyones work's looking great!.
Skullbeast, at first I wasn't sure about yours because I would never have the confidence to jump right into a drawing the way you seem to, after a few updates it's looking fantastic, really cool stuff!
Luness, Cool idea, made me chuckle at first with the "poodle dog" fur. I checked out more of your work and your pencil skills are stunning! Looking forward to how it turns out.
Reymus, cool idea, I like your style. Your creature reminded me of the big ant-lion creatures from Half-Life2 (the ones that charge you, not the flying ones).
G@m, nice sketch but lets see some more! :P
The Rooster, that thing looks nasty. I like it's little clutching hands, especially the ones on the bottom arms, there's something very creepy about them.
Arthur 'two sheds', that's awesome! At first glance I thought you had linked an electron microscope photo for some inspiration, very cool indeed.
Crowsrock, I like the idea, it seems like it would actally work. Lets see some more development though!
Anibawl, when I saw your idea I thought to myself "ah that's an obvious idea" but I think the fact that I thought that yet didn't initially have the idea only says it's a good one. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it visually.
LauraGarabedian, Nice dino, I'm interested to see what you do with the texture because I never seem able to make effective textures on my drawings so things are either textured and badly rendered or smooth and monochrome.
Bbwolf, I must say at first I was unsure about your creature, probably down to your scanner or the big bloody arm that seemed to steal my eyes from the actual creature but your furthered idea really caught my eye, I love the vertical wings, something very elegant and aesthetically attractive about them.
Tyrus, heh when I first looked at your drawing it stimulated a novel idea in my head. I imagined a little creature that would hook it's claws over my ears and give me a nice clean shave. Obviously your creature seems to be a tad more enthusiastic with it's shaving.
Dwinbotp, Cool idea. I can't wait to see what comes of such a doodle!
Rushwolf, It's drawings like that which really inspire me to get better with my wacom. I seem incapable of creating something whith such a strong sense of for with such simple marks. I always either seem to sketch a line drawing and then struggle about "bollocking" in colours and then trying to render and it never quite flows smoothly... Can't wait to see your final.
Cbonner, badassed sketch! I can imagine that beast hanging from a cave, ready to savage an unfortunate guest.
I've started rendering mine but it's feeling way too washed out, I havn't quite got the hang of this values lark...

Well I see everyone is getting a good start.
My creature may look docile, but do not be fooled. It paralyzes its victims with poison from its tail before consuming them. Once the food is paralyzed, the creatures tongue will spiral around its food pulling it in to its mouth. The food simultaneously travels into its mouth, and through its stomach,(where enzymes deteriorate and absorb the epidermis on contact), and out its huge sphincter, expelling an apparent lifeless, skinless corpse onto the ground. It is common after the victim is expelled, for the paralytic toxins to wear off, and for it to become conscious again while suffering a slow excruciating death as the residual enzymes continue to deteriorate its body.

Here's what I decided to change a bit from my initial sketch, the pincers just wasn't working for me, so were the legs of the creature. 40 is the new 16, now all you have to do is ask your father for some new wheels and promptly wreck them before he finalizes the insurance.

Reymus: LOL. Do we know each other? I'm acquainted with yet another cheese inspector who thinks the very same thing about turning 40. If we don't know each other, it's a mighty strange coincidence.
Thanks for all the birthday wishes.
Indeed I am giving the gift of an extra day today.
So, continue to refine your finals or hurry your WIPs into final status and post them by 10am tomorrow ... I wanna see some tasty skin!
Thanks again.

It's a strange coincidence, but I'll ask you this, what kind of 40 year old fraternizes with cheese inspectors?
Pick a side, Swiss or cheddar, two cheeses enter, one cheese leaves.

Okay kids. I was about to set up the poll... but rushwolf where are you? Toss some skin in that big guys mouth and finish her up.
I'm leaving the finals thread open a while longer. With the extra day I was hoping for a little more. Well, no... maybe a lot more...
Some notes before I close it:
AD2012: Please can you size that one down a bit and reattach. Big is fine, but you have to scroll a bit to see it. We don't all have huge monitors.
And also: you should redo the html code for your artist and concept lines. Looks like you did not take out the asteriks and you are missing some the bold type commands...
Choob and Tyrus: I'll be pulling your entries for quality if you can't come up with something more in the next few hours. COW is a weekly activity and you really need to spend time developing and rendering your concept. Simple sketches are not enough.
I'm wishing we had had a better turn out this week. I'm willing to leave the finals thread open to court some more.
What are all the US CA.org'ers freaking out doing their taxes at the last minnit or something? :D
All right... lets say... (christ) one more day? I was gonna say six hours, but I dunno if that is enough time.
Dad's not mad, he's just a little disappointed. Just a little. But he loves you and he knows when to give you another chance. ;)
c'mon now!
BTW thank you all for the birthday wishes. I am quite touched. Finally took the time to see Watchmen and I really quite liked it despite some of the mixed reviews from hardcore fans of the comic. I must say, That Dr. Manhattan is quite something. Goodness.

Ok, finally picked a version to finalize. I'll burn the midnight oil to get it all nice and finished If you want to keep the finals open until early tomorrow morning.
Here's some of the various versions I haven't posted. The final one that im going to finish is the lil bugger with its mouth open. Trying to give em some personality and dynamics.

Rushwolf: Damn, these have all got potential! Enjoying that Painter are you? It definitely shows. Couldn't help but notice there's no brush palette in your screen captures. Got something to hide? Hmmmmmm? ;) Nicely done man. Gonna be an awesome final I can feel it.
In case you guys haven't noticed I'm sitting this one out. Good luck to everyone. Hope to see you in the next.
