I am new here. I am a professional illustrator and designer. I've been checkin' you all out and I am glad to share such greatly talented company. I am here for the following: to improve as an artist, to do all I can to help others in pursuit of the same and to make new friends.
I hope you enjoy my work.

Nice hero portraits you got here ;) I like all the captain america's, the expressions are right.

Are you colouring with colour-pensils and markers? Very traditional ;)

Edward Cherniga
April 7th, 2009, 06:12 AM
@Blazef,
Thank you, I enjoy your work as well.
@Absorber,
Hey, thanks, glad you like them. The Captain America pics are all from imagination. When deciding how I want a character to look, I do not want to limit or influence my ideas by using reference. The portraits, Batman, Xmen, are done in gouache, looking at photo ref but also making stuff up. Some are done using watercolor pencils, used either wet or left dry for the texture. There is acrylic here and I love to use Copics for grey tonal values. I never seem to have time to use oils, since deadlines usually do not allow for dry time. Although I want to start working with a tablet, I doubt I will ever completely give up my brushes.

Great stuff here, Ed :D Diggin' the Elvis pic, and the black and white lady with the lace is really cool. The middle characters' likenesses in the X-men pic are a little weak, maybe... other than that, great work :teeth:

Show us more! :vodkamachine:

@AmontiladoAg,
I really appreciate that. I think you are being kind by calling that likeness weak, I am not happy with it either, so I am going to remedy the situation this weekend. :]Merci.
Here are some sketches to look at with lots of beasties and who knows what else.

This first on is acrylic on leather. I had to create a painting process to make it happen. I did it for my band mate and told him to have it professionally treated and sealed. Since he did not, it now has scrapes, and paint scratches from riding motorcycles and playing music. The "eye" is the only area unaffected and it is pristine. Weird. Second one is an Oni tattoo design I did.

April 14th, 2009, 08:18 AM
@'ej,
I appreciate the encouragement and I have really been itching to break out the oils lately. It was the first medium I learned to paint in and I feel it is where I do my best work.
Time to hit up the art supply store.
@Dahami,
Thank you, that is kind of you. Here is a dragon to check out.
@Enydimon,
Thanks for saying so, I feel faces are my favorite things to draw.

So, here is a dragon, a Yakuza named "I am trouble" and a 10 minute sketch of Logan which I did to amuse myself on break. I used photo reference, but intentionally made him look different, to be more in keeping with how I see the character. Like with a broken nose.

Those solid black inks on Doctor Strange are ruling! I'll have to try inking my characters with ink wash. That pose on Pheonix is very dynamic! Are these X-Men listening to Immortal Technique? Anyway, share some more!

Edward Cherniga
April 20th, 2009, 03:09 PM
Eon, thanks man, I really appreciate that. I love ink work and I thought adding it would give some variety to my little sketchbook “real estate” here. Funny you mention Immortal Technique, because when you were writing that post, I was in the recording studio working out the vocals for a new song and I was talking about Immortal Technique. Literally at that time… I have been experiencing crazy amounts of synchronicity lately. Perhaps it is a harbinger of good. Eon, step into your challenge, hit it in the groin! Cheers!

@dwardo,
Yeah, clowns creep me out as well. This one came to me in a dream the night before I drew it. Thanks for the compliments. Re: values, I have trained my mind to access values constantly, if I am looking at it, I am thinking about how I would render it, often in various mediums at once. Also Loomis has invaluable info within the pages of "Creative Illustration" so check that out.
Here is the warm up sketch du jour. 23 minutes. I think I am getting faster.
I bought my first Moleskine and I cannot wait to transfer this sketch because the paper in this book has a really sexy texture. I hope to paint it tonight after band rehearsal.

Hey gang. Thanks to those of you who have been voting on my thread rating. It inspires me. The deadline is approaching to hand in my latest concept sketches and I will see if I can get permission to post them.
I attended the funeral of a dear friend yesterday, so I am kind of speechless with a low threshold for b.s. therefore, I think a geek laugh is in order.
Here is a "Wrightson" ape I did when I was a kid for a magazine called "Amazing Heroes". I still laugh when I see it, perhaps it will amuse some of you.

I am fueled by java, extra joss. I have not eaten today, too excited about work and the meeting in Manhattan tomorrow, where I will deliver my first rounds of designs. I am designing three Lamborghini Gran Turismo concept vehicles which be in a limited production run of twenty cars each and slated for release beginning next year.
I cannot illustrate my ideas fast enough, I keep coming up with new ones.
They are not expecting how many designs I am providing. :} I am so grateful to be working with these people. I have never been given this much free reign and respect.
Although my NDA prohibits me from saying much about this, I hope they will let me post the design rejects.
Here is a WIP which, I have been fooling with as spare time permits. I am not including the bottom tier of panels because it gives away too much of the story. I am writing it as well. I am trying a new technique on this, more on that later.
@Sadetar-
That is very kind of you to say. I always enjoy your posts and admire how you conduct yourself in our little community here.
@Donalfall-
Thanks! I am glad you are with me on that. I think I could do an entire story containing nothing but “TT” carnage. Time to slap a hoagie together. Cheers all!

Edward Cutie, It wasn't that much perhaps kind, more like me being honest. :P

How socking that is - the fact that someone actually reads what I post and even says that one enjoys reading them, which I found, perhaps, even more shocking. God gods. I in fact feel flattered. :bashful: Haha. Even though it's not probably even meant to be taken that way, I still am. It is sweet none the less and it is, of course, nice to feel flattered once in a while. ;)

And I'm more than curious to hear about that new technique of yours. It looks awesome so if you have time to open it up, I'm all ears. So I'm kinda whineing more posts! :)

On the Easter Egg...I meant that I had seen it and then it disappeared, which I found to be cool. So no apologies needed. The song inspired the drawing.

I think I could do an entire story containing nothing but “TT” carnage.

Whenever you have the time, please do it! And feel free to add all kinds of other teen heroes. The folds and wrinkles of the clothing in that last piece are quite something to look at. And again, really digging how you approach skin tones!

After running the gauntlet last week I was in need of some serious decompression time.
I took it and here we go…
The designs went over better than I dared to hope for and the next stop is phase two. The funeral took a lot out of me. The show kicked azz.
@Sadetar-
Well, last time I looked, there was not nearly enough good feeling in the world. Of course it is meant in a truthful and flattering way.
Re: tech, I usually do thumbs, then work out all of the drawing problems before moving to the final board. Here I am going straight from thumbs to drawing on the board.
@Carnal-

Hey man! Really interesting style you've got here. It's like a comic and tattoo combination. At least that's what I'm picking up. What kind of stuff inspires you?

I really dig the pencil sketch of the woman's back, and the colored piece of batman on the first page.

Rock on man, and welcome to the group!

Edward Cherniga
May 7th, 2009, 11:53 AM
@HugeHarHar,
Thanks man. Well, I design tattoo flash, I draw comics and I am inspired by everything. I dig classic illustrators like N.C. Wyeth, the surrealists, Dali, Giger, I love Klimt, and comic artists like Alex Toth and a long list of others.
We are going to have a great time in the SSG! Cheers

So you don't only got nice smile but you even try to bring kindness in the world. Hahah. Sweetie, I like your attitude. :)

That new approach suits you well. And I really like the women from back. It's awesome and I love the tones. I'm just a bit confused about her toes. Is her big toe partly over her other leg?

And those last sketches are also really bad ass. Love the big pic of woman's face.

I also have to check out that Moleskine and look if I can find it in Finland. Can you say how smooth the surface of the paper is and how good the quality is? I'm just thinking it's only 200 gram while I have been mostly using 300. Even though with my skills that probably doesn't even mater that much. :P

HugeHarHar
May 9th, 2009, 02:15 AM
Nice update. I really enjoy some parts of the character design on top. I would really like to see you incorporate the inked in demon looking head thing that's in-between the two portraits into the design. Or maybe taking it and building a design based on shapes you pick up from it.

On the female body on the top left I see some parts of the body are well thought out, but I'd say the neck and shoulders are a bit distracting. I'm not sure if her neck is maybe to thick, or if her shoulders are to small.

It's odd, when I was younger I for some reason avoided the hell out of classic illustrators. Such a waste! I've really been digging, and I've come across some great work.

Keep rocking!

Edward Cherniga
May 9th, 2009, 03:45 PM
@Sadetar,
Thanks. Yup. that is her big toe resting on the opposite foot. This is a great case for altering your photo ref. and I should do it. Re: Moles, the paper is much smoother than most traditional watercolor paper. I am not a fan of the dimples in watercolor paper. I usually use illustration board for my watercolor work and I prefer a fine toothed grain. It is a fine paper when you can blast it with soaking washes and repeated modeling of value and tone and yet, it snaps back and does not lose it's grain. Buy it online, beg or borrow it, but get it.
@HugeHarHar,
Re: the design, {characters in a story I am working on} those images all figure into his story and are really notes to myself for development.
Re: the femme fig, yes indeed, her neck is super fat and it is funny how it happened, but perhaps only more funny to me that I let it go.
Re: classic artists, my first art book was Andrew Loomis' "Figure drawing for all it's worth" and I am looking at it now, if that tells you anything. After studying the classics, the stylistic veneer of most modern art fell away, revealing the mistakes we all seem to make. That was when I began to make less of a mess with my work.

Edward Cherniga
May 14th, 2009, 01:37 AM
@ Meduza, Thank you man, glad you like it. Yeah, some of it is marker. I use Copic Sketch markers on very smooth paper and if you use the chisel end with the tip, rather than it's wide flat part, you will avoid most streaks. Then the blender if you have streaks.
@HugeHarHar, I feel the same way. Expect more and thanks for the congrats. I should have a new update finished for later today. I am excited to see what our group comes up with next. Yeah!

@Alesoun, Yes, there is no other!
@kelly x, You are very kind and talented. That is a lovely thing to say. I am impressed by your work as well. How can one not be a Dali hag? I have read everything he has written. He is my patron Saint of painting. I cannot wait to work in oils again with this piece. One of the judges at my first art contest {I was 16}, was M.Whelan and I took 3rd with an Elric painting. Ironic, I had no idea he was there. We had a wonderful conversation about art, literature and he even asked me how I had achieved a certain effect in my painting. This monkey had gone to heaven with a high point in my career and a treasured memory. He is good stuff.

Dina Babbitt was an animator for Disney, but before that she was face to face with the Angel of Death

Yes, Granny, it is really just that simple, my friend. :] It is sad that we live in a world where we are taught to be ashamed of having the simple emotional desire to help one another.
No good deed goes unpunished and the world hates you when you stand for what you believe in.

Dina Babbitt and her story... Touching. Really touching. I still understand the museum's aspect quite well though. Museums don't of course want to be rude or unpolite, but the ownership of the artifacts can be and often are quite complicated. For example some of the collection of British Museums have been collected illegally during the centuries or at least seems to be done so according to our sense of justice (for example why on earth Elgin Marbles are in London, not in Greece). Still it is quite impossible to start to give back some of the artifacts. I don't think that museums are ready to do so and of course one could not say no in the future to others that would perhaps want something back that they may think is theirs, if there would be returns to some. There are thousand examples and mine weren't prolly not the best one, but I do see the perspective of the museum at least in the wider museum viewpoint. (And yes, guilty as charged. I have studied museology and I do work in a museum so I know I might be a bit biased. And I don't say she shouldn't have her paintings back I just say that I do understand the intricacy of the matter.)

These are hard questions and like Granny said sometimes both sides seems to be right.

And dear, of course your other updates were also marvellous and touching, but not perhaps as provocative as the Dina's story that seemed to carry me away.

@Granny, well said my friend. I believe most people are basically good and often confused. A finely developed sense of artist’s rights has always been a rare commodity.
Your support and friendship always shows up at just the right time. :] Re: Dali- winging it man.
@sadetar, the debate is irrelevant since we are getting Dina’s art out of that museum. They only display the prints, so they can keep those.
@Alesoun, I am going to employ a new painting technique, which I dreamt about two years ago. I have never heard of anyone doing it. I will produce it straight from the hip, with no color comps or prep. I have not produced an oil painting in a long time, due to lack of space. We have just leased 6000 sq. ft. of an industrial warehouse and my painting space is going to be in a Quasimodo style loft.
I am beyond excited.
@Jailhouserock, thank you Matt!
@Jesusfood, Thank you. I hear ya, I have read all of his writings. Man, he loved to think about Dali! :}
@Eon, Thanks man! It is one of my new faves. The B. Lee IS a tattoo, I design flash.

Congratulations on that studio!!!!! this is very cool news and your paintings will have to be delivered to you NYC clients with pulleys from the outside of the buildings, like they deliver pianos... you better make sure to take photos and post so I can cry.
I love the journal!! What is the metal?
My best friend who just died at age 86 had many two man shows with Dali, they had the same gallery in NYC... I could tell you some fun stories?????? Just picture Dali as a total showman with a mega phone and that mustache. So fun.

Cool that you are getting your own working space. I too am doing this in June, but with less space (an office) because I will be doing Graphic/Web design mostly.

I'm glad you are getting the paintings out of the museum. Like I first mentioned, I too am on her side. If the museum keeps prints then there is no argument really. An illustrator sells the rights to his painting been produced by a publisher, but the publisher never keeps the original, so why should this museum? The never purchased the piece from her.

I like the tattoo design. My only concern is the skin tone of the figure, will this show well when tattooed onto real skin?

@kelly x, I am sorry to hear of your loss. I want to hear any story you have to share. You and I could probably chat for hours, mainly with me listening. :] Heh, that is a great visual you gave me re: the pulleys and I will post some pics. Re: the metal, it is a flexible metal adhesive used to decorate model cars.
@Rist,
Cool man, I respect everyone’s right to opinion. Re: the tatt, it depends on the skill of the tattooist, it requires using more color, and using white ink for the highlights, but it can be done well. That is why his skin is loaded with various colors, I wanted to make it idiot proof. Congrats on the studio space. We are moving our recording studio into ours and I will have a space for guest artists. I just want to paint and rock out really loud. It is enclosed by trees and looks like a compound, surrounded by high fences with razor wire. We are going to have some cook outs this summer and throw some parties.

Very nice update. The panels at the bottom has some pretty great stuff happening. The building shots.

Two things I noticed was the baby's head in the bottom/left kind of floats off of its body. It's simply because the shadow on the baby's face are so much more powerful than those on his clothes. Try and match up the shirt, especially underneath its chin.

The second thing I noticed, and it's not quite as important than the first piece is that the composition of the whole page really forces the eye to the baby. Which works if that is the most important part of that page. Maybe the figure falling out of the building is first focused on earlier. See this might just be an issue of context.

Which ONLY MEANSSSSSS!!! post some more! You know I'm a fan.

@3H, man, you are so right. On both counts. No excuse for the baby head/shadow. I learned from it though. Re:composition of page, good eye, it was by design. The kid's expression is important to the story, more so than his fall. You are very kind my friend. Cannot wait to see what you think about what I left in SSG.
@ Granny, happy birthday, you have true grit. Enjoy that Loomis book, it is the finest instruction on figure drawing, I have ever studied. If you need any help with it, I am here. Seeing that marker pen sketch makes me want to get mine out and dish it out! Her pose reminds me of the one Spiderman does when on a building.

This latest sketch really has personality! Very slight but I think you have pulled it off! To me this person looks sad with some real issues. But he also has a good personality because even though he is suffering he is also showing a slight smile to try and hide his issues. I think the sketchy shading technique creates a certain uncertainty in the character, as if there is something worse than what you see. His eyes are also very sad in a passive way.

Positioning is 'slightly' off, but off enough for the face to distort in the wrong way.

The nose feels like a facing foreword nose rather than a 0 to 45 degrees nose. I know this is just a sketch so i will share thoughts on how to counter this issue when sketching 'realtime'.

Always imagine the nose as an object which projects from the face, even when face on.

When beginning a portrait first start by creating loose lines of the cranium (which you seemed to have done), but also the centre of where the face is in relation to its rotation. Once this is decided create vertical lines for where the inside of the eyes would go. This as you know will dictate where the nostrils end. But because of the projection of the nose this can cause issues when sketching fast. Because you have created the eyes before the nose you can now see how much asymmetry you can apply to the distance of each eye in relation to the nostrils.

As well as the nose blocking the proper guideline, nose in relation to eyes, there is also foreshortening. The closer objects will always seem to have more distance than the further away ones.

The eyes and nose may not seem too important when only a little off, but to me when you get this wrong it makes the face appear in two different rotations (right face seems different to the left face).

The more I do portraits the more I am realising that these features are the most important because of the way expressions give character to the person. This area will be the most observed and thus should be the most perfect arrangement on the portrait.

I hope I'm making sense and not just running from poachers to get shot on the River Dumba.

This man should have been a household name. It always saddens me and angers me how great comic book artists don't get their due as the masterful artists they are in the wider culture. Hopefully, in a few decades the culture will wake up to these modern drawing geniuses they've slept on.

@Granny, you know it, rock star! :}
@Eon, Wally Wood was of the first generation of artists who wanted to make a career of drawing comic books. His idealism attained a stunning verisimilitude when voiced through a romantic, exotic and glamorous exposition of beautifully naturalistic characters, settings and engaging storytelling. I have met many of the masters and I regret never having had the opportunity to shake Mr. Wood's hand. Regarding culture "Waking up" I think most people enjoy letting others do their thinking for them. When Hollywood decides to mine Wally's visual and narrative vocabulary, perhaps then, he will have "arrived"

ooo. skintights. hot!

may i suggest you listen to this guy (www.myspace.com/tomjones) while you finish her off. :P
-shin bones i'd likely straighten more.
-give her big feet man. I've never seen a superhero with beeeg feet, but i'm sure this one can pull it off.

Edwaard, you've got some sweet lines, they mix softness with power and the anatomy of the superlady is spot on.
Batmans anatomy is so outstanding as well, it feels so 3dimensonal (too bad you haven't posted that Joker faces that is hidden in the lower right corner).

I'm really impressed with your work man, your poses and rendering in particular are very dynamic. What impresses me more though is how much you seem to know, about pretty much everything! You always seem to have a piece of useful information or advice for anyone who needs it, and I really respect that.
I'm sorry I don't really have anything constructive to say to help you for change!
So yeah, please keep sharing; both drawings and the knowledge.
Peace!

Cosign! Must have been quite the experience to chat with Wally Wood and other masters!

As the others above, I hope you're doing well.

Hey people, I am a featured guest artist at the GMX show this weekend. I will be signing books, doing sketches for the public and speaking on panel discussions regarding comic books and sequential storytelling. Show you face and I will tell you a story...

I have not been here for sometime now. I have missed this place and I hope to be a more frequent presence around here. Much has changed.

Good to have you back sir!
The last 2 paintings are great, particularly like the skin tones on cat woman.
The hulk face looks great as well, although something is not quite right with the red light on the side of his face, I'm not sure if it's all the green areas within in but something is killing the illusion for me.

Looking forward to more,
Peace

Dan
