NEW CONTENT BOTTOM OF PAGE 2! :D

Reverie inspired me to open a sketchbook and I'm much more likely to update here than post single images about the forum. I hadn't painted any environments in a long time but after watching some of the guys at Reverie I had to play with some of the techniques I saw.

638650
I was still getting my head around some of the approaches and new brushes on the first one so it's a bit glitchy.

638645
Ice caves have the most amazing light qualities. The environment itself is translucent, can give off light and forms in the most amazing shapes.

638640
Yeah, I was just having fun with this. A derelict city in a cavern that's being overgrown and is now home only to a handful of wanderers; just plain fun.
To see the BIG size go [here] (http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/5183/caverncity2000px.jpg)

I was wanting to do a simple portrait after my more complex Naiads (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=151835&highlight=naiads) piece. The model is fictional and borrows her name from Les Miserable.

Some sketches from life done at Reverie.

I just uploaded my Magistrates (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2212111#post2212111) piece to the finished section and thought I'd make a piece showing the progression. I usually find them interesting so maybe you will too. Cheers

Love your style dude. The city in the cavern and the mountain are top banana. Also the step by step. I can learn stuff from that :) This is one sketchbook I'll be checking a lot. Keep em coming! Oh and the character with the white beard! What can I say?? I want one!!

Love the last few sketches, looking forward to seeing more! Hope you haven't been waylaid by a bunch of non-art stuff like I was.

The bearded dude is awesome, I'd love to see you do a full render of that one.

Great stuff, lots of personality in that viking man concept. The pink background makes him less imposing, almost vulnerable. Also, the contrast between long white beard and young, not-wrinkled face makes him more mysterious.

Nice work here man! keep it up!

Environment concept for a personal game idea. I really could have stopped a lot sooner and still have established all the major elements but I wanted to play around with some painting techniques too.

Hey, been reading some of your comments roun' the critique center. They were very helpful, so I thought I would check out your sketchbook.

Really enjoying some of the images. This last one of the personal game idea is just beautiful, you got the lighting spot on. However, I would like to see a little more color in the sky. Just a personal pref. though.

Can't wait to see more, keep posting!

loving the sb so far.
hmm.. imo, i don't think the left side of the latest update doesn't add anything to the piece... i think it actually removes the sense of depth that you really capture well on the right half.

Continuing the journey he arrives at the bridge...

Thanks for taking the time to leave the comments guys, it's good to hear your viewpoints and ideas. And yeah, if you stare at the bridge it starts to look odd but I was having a heck of a time eyeballing it's twisted multi-point perspective.

Wow, i thought i would check out your sketchbook after your very helpful critique on my concepts. Looking at your work has really given me a better insight into what i need to work on and what a good concept looks like.

I was wondering if it would be possible for you to upload a piece showing the progression of one of your environement concepts? It would be very helpful, but of course only if you have time.

(i also just realised that i have ben following you on deviantart and have given you a DD, seems i cant get enough of your work!)

Awesome work in here. I especially like the greyscale female portraits, they're treated really well. The viking raid piece reminded me a little of Thomas Moran's work. IF you're not familiar with his stuff I urge you to have a look at it. http://www.artrenewal.org/asp/database/art.asp?aid=733&page=4
Althoug I must say the witch made me laugh a bit becuase it had the same expression on it's face as I didd when I looked at your work.:jawdrop:
Perhaps she needs more wrinkles in her nose and between eyes.

Thanks for all the feedback and support guys, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment!

glaudarien - I'd be glad to upload some progression pics. You'll find them below with some comments.
jatherip - It's funny you say that about more characters because I was doing nothing but characters for a long time then sidestepped to do some enviros. But you're right that it's time to start making some new ones :)
Cam Sykes - Yeah, Moran has some fantastic work. He didn't come to mind when I was painting the pic but I see what you mean. Adding more nose wrinkles on the Witch is a good idea, could help boost the intensity. Nice eye.
Jho - I'm glad you found the comments useful.

Below are two of the enviro progressions. They differ in their creation in that I had in mind what I was going for with the Wasteland Bridge pic but the Viking Raid pic I didn't. I just created some shapes and shadows and turned it into whatever I saw in it.

So, nothing mind-blowing in this post, just some good ole' pencil sketches. I went to the botanical gardens over the weekend and did some sketches from life.
ALSO! I'm starting a local sketch group for the Fort Worth, Texas area. First meeting is this Saturday and more info can be found here (http://www.meetup.com/Greater-Fort-Worth-Sketch-Group/).

Here's collection of newer pieces, most of which were created to help flesh out a presentable concept art portfolio. As you can see in the last image I'm taking some of the character thumbnails from the 100 character sheet and refining them larger, these are just the first three. Hope you enjoy
