Hi everyone,
I've been coming to these forums for quite a while now, and after getting back from Dallas I feel much more motivated (in more ways than one) to contribute and participate more in the forums. This website has been hugely inspirational for me over the years, so many thanks to all of you.

These are just some samplings of images to get started, I encourage you all to visit my blog for some more recent sketches and paintings I've been working on. As of tomorrow (hopefully) I'll have a shiny new tablet, so I'd love to start posting some digital paintings and getting feedback from you all. So far I've been focused on learning traditional mediums, but on the long drive home from Dallas (and thanks to some kind encouragement from fellow artists) I was convinced that a bit of digital dabbling would harm no one. So with that said I now offer myself to the symbiosis of Concept Art.

Oh, and apologies for the awful photogaphy---maybe I should invest in a scanner...

Welcome!

This is truly a magnificent start to your sketchbook. Very powerful traditional stuff you've got going on there. Can't wait to see what you manage to pull with your shiny new Wacom tablet.

dTb,
These are beautiful!!!! Thanks for visiting my sketchbook. I LOVE working on quick sketches, but, in contrast to you, I'm looking for local long pose workshops around here. I really am needing to take some drawings through to the end. I feel the real test is in the finish with the choices one makes.

Will be watching to see what you do with digital. But, keep posting the traditional, 'cause your work is really strong.

Wow, I didn't expect so many replies, thank you all so much for visiting.

Obstbrand: Thank you, and nice adjective

Frank Gressie: Thank you, I can't wait to start digital :)

Peetaer: Thanks, it's very exciting to finally have a tablet.

Ethically Challenged: Thank you

AztcFireFlower: Wow, that means alot to me coming from you, I've been looking at your sketchbook for a long time now, and I am glad to hear you're doing long poses too, for me its very important to keep training in both. Thank you so much for visiting :bashful:

Nadiamoon: Thank you so much

Tigermilk: Haha, thanks (I think)

Zaorr: Thanks

Leonor: Thanks so much. My fantasy drawings are from imagination, for idea work I like to try and work on a figure's pose and gesture as much from imagination as possible.

DeeLock: Wow, thanks!

Here we go, some sketches and my first digital painting with a tablet!
A couple of these sketches were inspired by Janaschi's sketchbook project that she started with algenpfleger, here's a link to her sketchbook (http://http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=153780&page=7)---they're both very inspirational, so please visit if you have time.

I might work more on the painting, but Ill post it up in this state, thanks for looking

wow beautiful work man, I love those 2 pencil studies up top, and that digital piece is really good. :D

I'd be really interested in knowing how you went about those first 2 studies,
I've been lifedrawing for ages now, without too much improvement.
Were they day long poses? and what sort of pencils did you use?
I find it pretty tough getting a smooth gradient out of my ones.

sorry about the interrogation :P

dTb - Hey buddy! I am sooo glad you started a sketchbook because when I saw yours in person it blew my mind. Please feel free to share some progress drawings and/or 1 ounce containers of talent with the rest of us! :)

Seriously though - I think it's great that you got a tablet and I'm insanely inspired at how well you're doing with it! Are these sketches pre-Reverie or post-Reverie? I'm interested to know what, if anything, has changed about your approach or your work in general after that AWESOME workshop.

Thank you all for visiting and the support, it means so much to me.

Krato: Thanks---I'm not certain but I assume you mean the very first two figure drawings, which were done with a range of HB-4B probably

Jacky-Boy: Thanks for visiting, and I don't mind the questions :), the very top two figure drawings were worked on for about 5 3hour sessions, and the pencils are just regular graphite pencils (sorry I'm not sure what brand specifically) but the range is HB-4B.

Mike Butkus: Oh wow, thank you so much! You're work is amazing and very inspirational to me, thank you for visiting

bushido haha, Thanks for looking

maldrin MALDRIN!!!111! Yay, I'm glad you found the sketchbook, I should've sent you a link when I started it. I really should start making more WIP shots, its interesting to look back at the evolution of some pieces, so hopefully I'll have somegood ones to post in the future. I love my new toy too, the tablet is so incredible, already I wish I could do the workshop over again and keep a better eye on how everyone used theirs. Alot of the work in the first post is pre reverie, the second post is all afterwards. But as far as my approach post Dallas goes, I think my whole outlook on visual art has changed, I feel more confident in what I'm doing and my exploration of a new medium. I do want to continue working in oils, but I feel digital is a bit more practical (and much less stressful) for my idea work right now. We'll see what happens :), but thanks for visiting

staticpen: Thanks, coming to these boards over the years has meant so much to me, and Dallas was such an important experience to me, so contributing to the community is something thats very meaningful to me now, thank you for your comment!

Gloominati : Thank you so much.

Eerin: You and me both, Thank you for visiting!

Timer : Thanks, I'll try to keep it coming.

Toffeeliz: Wow, thank you very much, I love the colors in flesh, and the ability to layer in oil paint can creat really marvelous tones, thanks for you comments, I'll try to post more progress shots for everyone to see.

Helltroll Thanks alot!

Blue Severin Thank you, I really appreciate it.

Finally, some recent work, life drawing, idea sketches, a quick self portrait drawing and two WIPS---one in oil and one in digital. Still learning what all this tablet is capable of, what a marvelous little tool. Thanks for looking everyone!

A few digital WIPs and experiments, I've been trying to learn what this medium can do, it's frustrating sometimes, I feel a bit removed from the process after working alot with traditional mediums, but at the same time its so versatile, its been alot of fun exploring these programs. Thanks for looking :)

I've also updated my blog with some traditional stuff, figure drawing and painting. Check it out if you've got time!

I agree with digital being frustrating.

I'm also just getting used to the process of the digital medium and the hardest battle I'm fighting currently is trying to get the brushes to do what I want them to do. It's nothing like holding an oil brush and feeling that nice stroke and then leaving it alone.

Be-a-utiful paintings mate. Your figure paintings on your blog have such life, and they way you achieve the translucent skin tone with that real vibrant orange-red. I must ask you what colours do you mix is to achieve that colour? I am assuming that it is so vibrant because it is part of the under painting or.....?
The only crit I have, is on the composition of some of the digital paintings. In particular this one.
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=651751&d=1240268090
I guess the main thing that stands out for me that element divide the composition up two evenly. I guess its the old rule of thirds. Things just seem so much more natural that way.
But yeah keep on knocking them out.
Peace"

Or was that painted with the model present?

Everyone: Wow, thanks so much for all the comments and visits, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you all looking at the work. You guys keep me motivated, I can't thank you enough for that.

staticpen: Thanks, static, I'll try to keep updating both, sometimes I have trouble because my internet connection isn't always entirely cooperative, but thanks for looking :)
tandy1000: I often feel displaced with digital, there's something so marvelous about traditional mediums that just can't be emulated, like you said, and it's not a look but rather the feel of the materials, pushing paint together, smudging stippling scraping. I'm lucky to have both to use though :) Thanks for the comment
Dished: Thanks, I was glad to meet you in Dallas too, I'll definetly keep a watch on you, you do some great work.
rustik kid: Hi, I'm not sure which orange red colour you mean exactly, on my oil palette I use yellow ochres, a (fake) vermilion, and some sort of earthy red, no cadmiums really, sorry I can't answer better, I don't really think alot about the colours I'm using, more about the colour that's being made and whether it needs more violet or blue or red or yellow, cooler warmer, etc. Thanks for the comment about composition, that's something I don't have alot of experience with, I've been reading and trying to study it on my own, so hopefully I'll be able to integrate it more and arrange the paintings better.
Art_addict: Hey, thanks for finding your way into my sketchbook, it seems we just missed eachother last year in New Mexico, you were painting Raven in the spot I was in just before I left class. About your question, the digital painting with the back is more from imagination/ memory, I didn't actually look back at that drawing of Raven while I did the digital piece, it was drawn over a year ago, but I find that with every long drawing (or painting) I've done helps me when I'm working without a reference. It is curious to me though, if I'm not using reference, how much is really invented and how much pulled from the reservior of memory. Anyway, thanks for looking.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been working on several traditional pieces lately, not too much digital, but I bounce back and forth which I like. Anyway, a few oil paintings, sketchbook pages and one digital sketch, thanks for looking everyone! There's a big update on the blog too, so if you have time stop by there.

Hello David,

Yes, it seems we just missed each other. I was only visiting for a week. Shame, I would have liked to paint alongside you.
Painting out of your imagination like that is really impressive.. do you feel it takes the same amount of focus, conceptualizing the form in your mind, compared to doing it from life or more so? I think of that as something very intimidating, personally.
In general, I like your color sensitivity, I spot an Assael influence there as well... and your drawing and paint handling is quite nice. However, I think you could push your sense of form, identifying the smaller shapes more and make them integrated into the whole figure, even when painting in a more loosely manner.
2 weeks ago I went to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam together with Toby and Mercia and we stood in awe in front of a later self-portrait of Rembrandt. The paint surface was quite rough as is often the case in his later work, but it's handling, contrary to what most people see or believe, was not. All tiny subforms wedged into one another, packed onto larger parent forms, and everything was stitched together in a very controlled, logical way. Everything was beautifully structured with immense attention to the tiniest forms. Imo, it seems even though at first glance they appear to be painted quite roughly, his decisions and brushstrokes are as refined and controlled as in more smoother work. It was stunning! I think that is something that could push your work to another level as well.

I very much enjoy looking at your work and will keep an eye on this sketchbook!

Happy painting!
Tom

Art_addict: Yeah, I'm sorry we missed one another too, I'd like to hear your opinion on how Tony's teaching compares to Ted's and Tim and Michelle's, I've been thinking of trying to get into a class with one of them...I feel mostly when I'm rendering out a figure it's more from memory than imagination, the imagination part is more for the initial gesture, which is usually a mess of lines of that are meant to really get a feeling of a pose, so I guess I kind of just go by instinct...but if it's a strong enough initial sketch then laying in the details is just a matter of drawing on everything I learned from Tony and working from life...Hope that helps answer your question a bit---thanks for the advice about sub forming too, that underlying structure is definitely something I'd like to keep in tact, I really appreciate you mentioning that.

Aah, the conceptual stuff has blown me away. You're treading a path I so very much want to explore just as you are doing with some incredible results. Colorwise and theme...Wow!
