OLD SKETCHBOOK

Looks good. I'd say push the contrast and establish some midtones. The values aren't blending so well; crank down the opacity to blend them together, especially on the grapes. The planes on that apple look great.

For that pumpkin, I'd say to establish a fuller range of values. It looks a tad flat right now.
Keep it up!

on the pumpkin one, one suggestion would be to do what artsy folks call "turning the form." make a layer on top and set it to "soft light." then grab a big fuzzy round brush, pick a nearly-black hue of orange and hit the lower left edges of the pumpkin with it. keep it very subtle and build it up. then do the same on the upper right, but to a much less obvious degree. finally, pick a nearly-white hue of orange (adding a bit of yellow helps, or adding blue if you want to go for contrasting sky-ish highlights) and move your highlight just inside of the shadow on the upper right (follow the form of the pumpkin with them). lastly, modify the stem shadow to follow the shape of the stem. you'll start to get that spherical feeling from it. check the attachment to see what i mean.
hope that helps!

Sourgasm beat me to my critique, so I suggest you read his post a second time.
When applying colours, be sure you check out how they work in real life, or at least from a quality photo. The world isn't as vibrant as we think it is in most cases.

Alright, so im working on an idea for the current chow, their are apparently obvious mistakes that i will hopefully work through.
Crits welcome
break from vent, studying life, ref and stuff. Will return in a month or so.. + Where can i get allot of quick hand pics, of course the internet, but i was thinking of a posemaniac approach, i tried their system, its in Japanese and loads quite slowly..

well at least its an improvement on the one above. Um, is their a site or thread on CA that tells you how what base color appears more where, like the nose is more red for ex-- i think. Also what is a good way to make pores on photoshop or add detail to skin?
Krato
April 18th, 2009, 03:18 PM
used a tutorial to try and make this picture, what do you think?

April 18th, 2009, 03:28 PM
I'd say to just keep drawing and working on your values more. Some of your pieces appear more flat because you just need more contrast between the lights and darks. Maybe some value studies would work?

April 18th, 2009, 11:05 PM
I think you're at a place where the best thing you can do is just continue to push forward. Just the act of drawing and concentrating on making a drawing will help you make the improvements you want.
A suggestion from my perspective, focus in a little bit and push yourself with just line, get it as tight as you can. IF you get bored with that , try getting some value in. Just a thinking out loud kinda thing. Keep at it man.

You have a great start on your sketchbook. I want to see more of your stuff. Especially more pencil on paper. You seem to have a good eye for you the gesture, but I think it would help you to work more analog. When working in Photoshop work in more values. Something you may try is to only work in greyscale for a while. Really try to push some of the tones.

Quick sketch with the stream and a random leg/bone study i did on photoshop.
I tried to use a deeper difference in values on these two pics. Suggestions + tips for environments would be appreciated.
IRONFISHGOON:I would like to put my pen and paper stuff on here but i cannot i dont have the stuff to do it.
AVEH: Yea, now is probably a good spot to start, what better age than 16?
SILVESTRI99: Yea, i have heard that my values are often low created flat images, so im going to try and change that.

Hey tiny Turtle, nice studies man :D Now do the same with the environments as with the everything else, you know the drill, study from ref photos or life studies first to build a visual library then start doing stuff from imagination, keep at it :yayca:

Pic of some mountains with snow used ref, crit
Zorcron
April 26th, 2009, 12:15 AM
the mountains look great i might suggest more color IE: Emphasizing the purple and blues
also perhaps emphasize the distance in the mountains far away by lowering the contrast and pumping up the contrasty parts of the foreground
just my 2 cents :)

April 26th, 2009, 08:01 PM
Great paint, but as Zorcron said, Yeah try more purple and blues,
AND AND, Eagles? Come on now! Its all about polarbears, Falcons, turtles, Phoenixes, and penguins! :D or rhinos :D

in this last one even though its a sketch i think a secondary color would really spark , the values are there perhaps giving the fire in the caves real strong values as right now they are pretty hard to read

Thanks for your advice, will do! That is my main concern, doing anatomy studies, can't draw concept creatures and other characters without being able to do anatomy correctly... Anyways! I looked through your posts and I am amazed by your environments! Very good, I love the general flow of the pictures, next stop smaller details!

keep em coming , your use of color is improving but with those photos in paticular there seems to be a lack of color variation which can be good and bad haha
as in with the lighting they have got set up there is not much room for any other colors then the ones they like for the photo shoot or whatever they have got set up (it seems to me anyways)

Well you're off to a good start. I see you like to do landscapes and environments. That is a tough one. Studying perspective is going to be murder.
Try not to rely so much on photoshop so much. Traditional mediums are still highly regarded these days.

youre getting better at painting! keep it up! one crit i have is for http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=672692&stc=1&d=1242535738
i would either omit or kinda change the cast shadow of the person's arm. If you want to keep it, try to make it so it adds the the illusion of 3-dimensionality, because in my honest opinion, the shadow makes the face look flat
my favorite is http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=675641&stc=1&d=1242834966 it looks awesome
