Ok, let's do this.
As a reminder, here are the characters we have to develop.
the hero,
the shadow,
the protector,
the sage,
the technician,
the rabble rouser.
I can modify this post and add names along with each characters. Ill let you guys decide which period and influence we should go for.

Looks good nic ! Maybe look for something a bit more...friendly looking ? Right now she looks a bit mean/dark for a hero, in my opinion.
And don't hesitate to post some references and/or images that could help us nail a period or universe, everyone.

Well I tried to suggest her schizo dark side, but maybe it should be more subtle!
Ok I have a suggestion for a possible setting. If you feel you have a kick ass idea better than mine, dont hesitate :)
It could be some king of science-fiction setting, 1000+ years from now, on some icy planet. I think it could be cool to use a ''winter/snow/arctic'' setting because it's not too much used in movies/videogames and it has a lot of potential for interesting design ideas.
Some reference I can think of : Starwars episode V (the beginning of the movie), The Thing, Lost planet (video game), Icewind Dale (video game), any siberian landscape, etc
I gathered some pictures to better explain my idea

hey guys, here's some stuff .... humm... hard to get something that people would actually remember. Almost like an iconic feel for the hero and shadow characters. Ill keep exploring.
I dunno if i should focus more on equipment stuff or just visual aspect of costumes.... what do you guys would prefer ?

Hey Dan, The very first shadow character's face is sort of odd. It's like a 10 year old's face on a woman's body.

D@niel: Nice setup, though I suppose we have to push something or another with her character as she is the Hero... not sure though how exactly we visually portray that distinction... :P
DanielC: some freshness developing in the gear fosho! I suppose to go with Voraces setup though, perhaps a lil more tech peeping through. I was thinking that she could have some light bionic action peeping through a predominance of crazy animal pelts... but not too much tech as the mechanic can go nuts with that display, as Vorace has so expertly portrayed.
seeing how theres already plenty of sickness developing with the costuming and gear... I thought Id explore a lil facial action. Im thinking a lil on the asian sign...ode to future eskimos... lil bjorkesque... probably with light blue eyes .I also figured we should keep the face open (no masks/heavy eyewear) to best portray the character description....hmmm... also thinking that a punk type hairstyle and some tribal facial paint?? wide open for exploration. what do you guys think?

Nice work teammates !
I did more stuff for the Techy but need to scan it. will post them when Im back home.
I did a montage with all the designs we did for the hero, to get a better overall idea and be more effecient with comments and critics. I did also a separate image with the faces.
Smokenmirror : Im with you on the fact that we need to see the hero face. Maybe not crucial for the other characters, but for the hero it is!:). I think going with a bjork-looking face is also a nice touch! Not sure for the tatoos in the face, maybe its too much cliché?
I like the strangness of face #10. maybe not for the hero, but it has a lot of personnality. My fav are #5 and #8. Maybe going with darker hair is better to create a contrast with the white/blue snowy background?
There is a LOT of wonderful ideas. You guys did a superb job!
Considering the hero's costume, I must say a particularly like DanC outfit (#4). It has big bold shapes, and his very original.
The lower part of D@n's #8 is also really interesting. I like the side belts and the huge snow pants.
IMO some design are a bit to ''slim'' (#1 and #6). Usually when you want to stay warm you need a big coat because it's full of air, and the air is an excellent isolant. Except if they are wearing some super futuristic clothes :).

youre a MACHINE Vorace!!!!! Im diggin the Shadow (img 3 from the top)! love the fur treatment! And the last tech character is my fav.! Brosefs de Baguettes, i suppose we still need to lay down a method for the final comps/character setup... like have we all agreed upon the hero elements? and therefore have it nailed down and its just the final illo to be done? Can we just appoint the mighty Vorace as art director w/the final say so to keep us visually cohesive? or would another of our skillful crew arise to the call of yay or nay duty?? Alllls im sayin is to get our assembly line in order for completed products we need a final say so guy; were cranking fosho, but i think some more finite goals w/deadlines could only help. :P

smokenmirrors
April 15th, 2009, 02:10 AM
excccellent... Well I experimented a bit by doing a character line up to see how these peeps might interact a lil bit. Just went off my first impression and inspiration of course from my fellow baguettes.
The bionic boot action was just my thought of a "future" method to traversing the snowy terrain. I also really like the aesthetic of old style animal pelt action draped over new shiny tech...
I was also thinking that maybe we can narrow down our characters a bit with a cultural setup: ie: as i suggested earlier that we steer the hero towards a inuit hybrid mix ie: Bjorkish, likewise the shadow could follow that route. The protector might be the most native of them all as perhaps he found the hero (from wherever she came from), some roided out full blooded intuit! Then the sage has got to be something completely different as per the prompt. Likewise our technician and rabble rouser can be wide open...
annnnyway, just my etchasketch setup.

ok guys, Im a bit drunk right now but will do my best to crit and comments all the awesome stuff you did
EDIT : As smokkenmirrors post was not there as I did my message first, I will edit it later today to add your designs!
EDIT 2 : Added comments for SmokenMirrors' designs and added general guidelines
PROTECTOR
-This one act as a father figure for the hero. It should show, and we can help that by showing is face, a hard face but full of love for his little girl.
-NO GADGETS. No electronic. Low-tech stuff only.
-#2 fur is interesting as it create a big bold silouhette.
-#4 as some nice ideas I circled. I like the fact that we see the arm, so we can see he is muscular and powerfull. But he will need some kind of clothing anyways. maybe something streched on the muscles so we see them cleary, but going on Planet Snow without anything on the arms is the best way to be an ice cube.
-#6 headgear is nice, simple armor plates, reenforce the protective role. The rest of the character looks a bit more like a soldier rather than a worker/father because of the armor on the arms.
-I think it's a good idea to make this one tall, with a lot of presence, like Smokenmirror did. Not necessary a giant, but a man with a lot of presence. Again the fur is nice to help reenforce the silouhette and the ''big powerfull but protective bear'' look.
SHADOW
-It is important that we show more the ''self sufficient'' aspect. It is a big part of the character concept. He can live alone in the snow and is a bit mysterious ouuuyh. IMO drapery and huge clothes can help to create this feeling and give classic ''dark/mysterious'' look.
-Maybe we could find something to suggest knowledge? Some weird techno gadget connected to an internet database? paperscroll?
-Beard is a must on this one! When you are a loner you dont give a shit about cutting it hehe
-D@n had a nice ideau on #4 : the cloak. Well it is a bit cheesy of course, but a cloak is an excellent way to look special AND protect yourself frm the mighty wind of winterland
-#5 : really great clothing design. Love the way we see all the clothing layers. Must keep!
-Theese big boots on Smoken's design are an interesting idea. It could be developped more on a practical point of view : how exactly does it help them to move on the snow ? How do they work?
TECH GIRL
-I think the best way to fulfill all criteria is to mix all the stuff I circled in red. #3 big backpack (same thing on Smoken's design), full of tools but slowing her in a fight, #4 tool kit to repair anything, #5 huge ski boots.
-Maybe the design of the skis could be pushed further... not only a classic ski. Im sure in the future they will looks more awesome than that hehe
-A more bulky/chubby silouhette?
-Should add others reference to transport method?
Ok guys im in a hurry and must go, will try to post other ideas and guideines later!
GENERAL GUIDELINES
Deadline : april 30
Only 2 weeks left. I think we can start more final design on the Tech, Hero, Protector and Shadow, because we already have a nice pool of designs. Just be sure to tell the others wich one you are doing to be sure not to duplicate a character hehe. Dont be shy and show the WIPS so we can all give crit and comments.
The best would be to have all 6 characters finished for april 29, so we could have 1 day to make some nice graphic design for the overall presentation.
Goal : to design and render 6 characters.
Nice to have : additionnal tools designs, variations for some gear, facial expression, etc.
Overall design guidelines :
SmokenMirror : you are right about the cultural setting. It will helps to narrow it. If nobody is against, we could go with your proposition :
Hero : Inuit-Bjork-''Nordic asian'' (not sure how to call them). Modern,tech-user and bad-ass Inuit rather than wild and feral whales eaters. Well, she need a bit of a wild side for sure. But I suppose you know what I means uh
Protector : Same thing
Shadow : Whatever, as long as he is a bit weird looking
Rabble rouser : Latin look? (south american?)
Techy : North american
Sage : dont know, maybe it will be clearer as we do more design for him
It would be nice to see some details of these cultures on the design. Maybe on the colors paterns, or some ornaments. My lunch time is over so I dont have time to post reference :(. dont hesitate to post yours if you have some!
Colors and mood :I think it could be cool to go with the icewind dale look (portraits posted on p.1). All colors are cold, even the reds and oranges, the background are simple but help to support the mood and the feeling of winter. I'm a big fan of their ''dark'' look also, what do you guys think?
As a general note : Great job guys!! I love where we are going with this CHOW :):yayca: :yayca: . When you are doing the final character, dont hesitate to add some details of a backstory. it will helps to define the chracter and it can easily help to find ideas for design elements of clothings/tools/etc.

Teundeboer
April 24th, 2009, 04:20 AM
Perhaps you could show some of her tools, this is the technician right? it looks awesome, but i think overstating the fact that this is the technician can help the feel. Cuz there could be anything in those pouches she's carrying, so if you didnt know any background info at all this could be any woman with a bionic arm. But if you for instance show a screwdriver or a hammer or something just placed on that tool belt of hers, I think the feel of a technician will shine through instantly.
Feel free to dismiss this completely since I am in no way on your team or related to the progress, but u asked for comments and crits.
RBeek
April 24th, 2009, 04:54 AM
i think i would have to agree with teundeboer ! :O
Widout any background info i would just see this as some chick with a bionic suit/arm.. Some tools or anything would i think add the feel that this is a technician or engineer.
maybe (its just an idea) add some more visible features to the arm..
Like a screw driver or something else thats able to rotate :X
Further than that all this stuff i awsome and this last picture is incredible!
keep it up! Really this is gonna be great! ! !

beautiful painting D@niel lots of energy even though the guy's standing still. Is it just me or is his chest armour a little twisted, it's sort of inline with body centre then turns more toward the viewer at the bottom (could be my eyes been a long day)

great stuff guys!! Im loving these characters!!
A few crits coming to my mind :
Smoken : I could suggest maybe to tweak a bit the colors, to avoid pure black for the shadow and pure white for the lights. It could adds more life into the character.
D@n : The description of the sage talk about the fact he is coming from a different culture than the other ones. Maybe it could a bit more apparent? Some additionnal symbols/cultural representation ?

I created the thumbnail for our team! And for the person doing the final post : we have to be certain to have the good file name. It would sucks to be cut only for a stupid error uhu
