SUPER Stylised Challenge - April 2009 - Jester (Fool!)

Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread.

IMPORTANT: By entering this challenge you give 3DTotal.com Ltd. permissions to reproduce the submitted material in 2DArtist Magazine and all subsequent editions of the Work (by which we mean 2DArtist), its ancillaries, and other derivative works, in any form or medium, whether now known or hereafter developed, in all languages, for distribution throughout the world. 3DTotal.com Ltd will credit each artist accordingly, providing they email lynette@3dtotal.com with their full name, conceptart.org name, email address and website (if applicable).

Please always create new and original artwork in order to avoid any issues with copyrights. If you're unsure as to whether your work infringes any copyrights, please don't hesitate to contact lynette@3dtotal.com for advice.

So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, paint it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!

This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!

What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!

What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com) and we'd like the winner's image to be used as the article cover!

NEW: Please aim to create your final images, and save your WIPS, at resolutions of around 2000 pixels upwards, to ensure that when you images are published they are high quality. Any screebshots are understandably going to be screen resolution (72dpi), so simply capture those as large as you can when saving out your WIP stages.

There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT+1.00 (BST: http://www.britishsummertime.co.uk/). A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.

For a valid entry, you must make sure your final image is posted in both the WIP thread before the end of the month - 31st April 11:59PM GMT+1.00 (BST: http://www.britishsummertime.co.uk/) - and then in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th May 2009. Voting will take place from the 8th May to the 15th May 2009, when the winners will be announced!

We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!

Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline (31st April 11:59PM GMT+1.00 (BST: http://www.britishsummertime.co.uk/)), as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging!

Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!

Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!

2. If you want to vote but are not a contributor of the challenge, you need to have been registered on the ConceptArt.org Forums for at least the last six months, AS WELL AS have 50 posts already to your name.
3. It goes without saying that all voters MUST look through each of the entries before posting their score.
4. Finally, don't vote for yourself or get your friends to vote for you in an attempt to influence votes, it's not an attractive quality.
5. The 3DTotal team are all able to vote from their CA.org accounts some of us have fewer than 50 posts but we know who we are!

We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!

This month we have chosen: Jester (Fool!)

Jester
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

A jester, joker, jokester, fool, wit-cracker, prankster, or buffoon is a member of a profession that came into popularity in the Middle Ages. Jesters are always thought to have worn brightly colored clothes and eccentric hats in a motley pattern. Their hats, sometimes called the cap ’n’ bells, cockscomb (obsolete coxcomb), were especially distinctive; made of cloth, they were floppy with three points (liliripes) each of which had a jingle bell at the end. The three points of the hat represent the donkey's ears and tail worn by jesters in earlier times. Other things distinctive about the jester were his laughter and his mock sceptre, known as a bauble or marotte.

Here is a selection of Images from a simple Google search to give you some good references for this month’s brief!

Uh-oh ... No replies yet ... Does anyone have any objections to this challenge? As it's still early I can always change the topic, so let me know guys! (Please!) :)

*Edit* be sure to click on the reference pics provided so you can see the variation of the topic - it's not about masks! It's just always tricky finding free stock photos that can be used as the banner image, but the reference pics should give you a better idea, if you're unsure. The idea of the topic is based around April Fools (Jesters are your traditional, classic fool), but if no-one likes the topic then I will change it if we can work this out now. So let me know ok? I want you all to have fun, so keep me posted!

Hmmm... i'd llike to change the topic... I see "The Jester" too already used. Maybe something more rare ^^

Doesn't matter how many times its been done before, because everyone will have their own take on it.

I think the topic can be a basis for some really awesome concepts. When I hear "Jester" I think of the Harlequin (http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Harlequin) from Warhammer 40k.

i also think it's a cool topic, surely there'll be classic interpretations, but why not. then, i'm equally certain that there's always room for more unconventional ideas, e.g. who whould have thought of a basketball-playing giraffe kentaur for the last challenge ;) good stuff!

Cool, I love you all, and glad I can keep the topic - I thought it was pretty cool myself but was worried when no-one replied which is why I thought I may need to change it. I found some interesting references on Google when I searched, so it should be a good challenge - open to lots of interpretation! :)

Great, well phew, I'm glad you're all happy scribblers, I'm looking forward to what you all come up with. Thanks for the support everyone! :)

I think no one replied because it was posted on April 1st. I think everyone thought it was a joke thread or something, so they waited to see what happend to this thread.

But it looks like we are all down for it

Ooooops! :D

Hmm, I wonder if anyone else but me got caught out by the Yahoo news on April Fools Day that said (stupidly), "...Shower of French snails expected to fall in the UK following a freak storm..." ... Me being a complete muppet took Yahoo's word as one of the truth (what an idiot) and called out, "Ewwwww! There's a shower of snails heading for the UK!!!!" much to everyone else's amusement in the office who'd seen the news already and knew it was a joke. D'oh!!!! A very red-faced Lynette, hehehe. All fun though, hey - glad it's just once a year though, I'm too gullible for my own good!

Back to the topic though: not a joke, 'tis for real, and I'm glad you all like after all - even Dave who thought it was a rubbish topic at first ;)

A good weekend to all - have fun! :)

rvdtor: Really like the pose and design you've got going.
jpedro: A real nice start! The pencil work is great and I love her expression, so sad though! :)

I've got some sketches done too, nothing fancy just some ideas to get a feel for some poses.

Not sure which one I'm going to go with yet. I mite draw up and develop both and then chose one at a later stage.

Here's some doodling - still working from refs at this point to get the pose right. I threw some colors on top to get a feel for the palette I want to use, and I can tell the crazy pattern is probably going to overpower my subject. Well, I'll deal with that later I guess.

jpedro - great sketch, nice values and a good job of tackling a difficult foreshortening problem! Her left knee looks a little larger than her right, as if it's thrust too far forward, but it's such a complex pose it's hard for me to tell.

rvdtor - beautiful pose, and a very stylish costume! Will it be lit by a spotlight from the top down? Very interesting

blackcherry - fun sketches, there. I like the idea of your character balancing on one leg, it really suits the jester feel.

cocou - a very grim looking jester, I like it! Looks like he's standing in a doorway? (I'll have to look again to be sure) A fun lighting scenario to play with. Be careful with textures, try and manipulate them a bit so they don't look pasted in. (I know I was guilty of just pasting in a texture in last month's entry! :bashful: )

ruth and blackcherry, thank you! wafflekoan, good point, i'll fix that in the coloring step, along with some other tweaks ;) i dig the idea with the little square patterns actually, you could use less saturated and only indicated areas of sqaure patches if it gets too much i guess.

Here's my developed Jester.

http://www.biscuitofdoom.net/Forum/jester_pencil_09.jpg

I ended up going with an entirely different pose from the sketches I posted in the end. I liked the raised leg one but I thought it was a bit flat with it being too front on, so i did some more sketches and came up with this, which I'm happy with. Going to work on it some more then move onto colours.

I'm considering making it looks like a playing card, but not sure yet I shall see where it takes me as I go along.

jpedro: you're welcome :)

waffleKoan: A very thoughtful looking Jester, though they were often intelligent despite their role, so it works! I think you've got the pose down pretty well and I like the pattern the clothing. Just be careful when you get onto the colouring that you don't make the pattern too bright or it will overpower the drawing cos it's a busy pattern.

daldbaatar: I really like the expression on your jester, he's rather evil looking! I also like the colours you've laid down so far.

albertocubatas: Another evil looking jester. He must be evil to be tied like that! I like the little doodle you posted too.

freddydark: Your image seems to be telling a story. Is the woman someone the jester loves or? I'm not sure about the woman's head in your image, it seems to dominate the whole piece due to its size when the focus should be more on the jester. Though that may be what you're going for. I like the idea you've got with the masks though.

Tipa: I like the colour scheme you've got developig it's nice and bright without being glaring. I assume you're jester is leaning on something from his pose and you haven't yet painted it in? If that's the case then the pose is fine. I like the fact he's balancing on a ball too.

the truth is I try to tell each illustration in this ... there are 2 ways of looking at it, we all have within 1 clown, our mood, and we are dancing at her, and 2 more romantic, the we do love to be clowns and puppets, sorry for my inglish...thank you very much for your comments, help me much
left to a more advanced version

This is my take on the whole Jester topic. I had problems with my internet connection the last few days so I didn't see what Albertocubatas had done. I'll post it anyways. I went more for MY kind of illustration rather than doing it far more comical and cartoony. I hope you like it.

Angel IntheUK: I like your Jester on the Unicycle, he's cool. Nice expression too. Not sure about the dog, I think it would work with or without it.

matoohan: Nice initital sketches and I like your developed chosen design too. The big walking hat it cool and the colouring makes it look like you've painted it, which is a nice look.

Kevin R: Good sketches. Is he falling over the dog or chasing it?

Macaruba: - I like your jungle jester idea, and i really like your animal drawings, they're great! I think the hyena would make the most suitable jester due to the type of animal it is.

S.C.P: Really like the big fat jester, hehe! It's different. I like the expressions on him and his sceptre too.

Artina: Great design, love the colouring!

Still working on my design, should be finished soon. I may post my progress later if i get chance!

Hi everyone,
Very powerfull image daldbaatar !
Hey thankyou blackcherry The sceptre is the real Jester and his overweight owner is trying to be a Jester but he just can't get a job, much to the delight of his sceptre who enjoys making fun of him! lol

the original sean: Yo man, u really took it the other way around, i love your creativity...From black BG, strong colored lines just scream at us...really jestery effect here
S.C.P: Never thought about a fat jester before...nice move. Lets wait and see how you color it.
albertocubatas: i love the pose, thinking that u should make the left hand be raised higher, cus to me it kills the pose balance...
cocou: Whoa, another unique approach...it would be nice to render it like 3D doll with lot of freckles and details on, cutting the thick black contour, to me those thick black lines only works on small comic drawings.
artina: awesome rendering, the palm should be little fixed, it should look like its really holding stuff...weird...
kevinR: nice perspective angle, i cant wait to see how you would nail the colors in.
matoohan: all you need right now is some kick ass BG bro.
macuraba: Jester=Hyena, genius!!!
reppep: i think it would be better off black and white...looks little creepy, like a nightmare jester that comes and taunts in your dreams
Angel intheuk: With a dog of course, but How about a Giant Shepherd following, making itself the whole BG...
FreddyDark: Cool, i think it needs some strong strokelines here and there at the focus points just to balance out the blurryness....
blackberry: Nice, to me it looks like a jester kid...i'll see when u color it.

freddydark - it's big.
KevinR - So lively with your lines, I'm looking forward to seeing this cleaned up.
Angel Intheuk - nice idea it needs a good background
artina - Great painting and face, could do with a decent background though.

Macaruba: awesome idea with the animals, very nice and nice style, the pic is really funny!

S.C.P: nice colors going on there in the background, and good work on the jester so far, especially the tiny skirt is turning me on xD

matoohan: i love the perspective! and the style is really cool, keep it up

the original sean: looks really unique, nice design

daldbaatar: really amazing work on the jester's face, i really like it, nice use of color too!

Tipa: your pic makes me smile, i like the combination of the color, and especially his facial expression

KevinR: :o you have to finish that!!!

freddydark: the rendering must have taken a while, i like the outcome, although a jester should make people smile the pic totally evokes a more melancholic feel, i really like that

Angel Intheuk: lmao, nothing more to be said, really funny!

rvdtor: you should post an update! i really like your first concept, great colors and design

jpedro: :O woah, its perfect, wheres the update? cant wait to see it

Hi everyone, really enjoyed being part of this challenge so far.
LOL Catafish thx ,nice start on yours.
Just thought I would make quick comments on everyone(hope I didn't miss anyone?).Thanks for comments regarding mine.

cocou:You have 2 very different Jesters going on,good job ;)

rvdtor:I like the pose and costume on your first concept.

jpedro:Very nice pencil sketch, really looking forward to your updates.

blackcherry:Great concept sketches, the final pose looks good.Maybe the hand
going into the background could be doing something? Juggling? Doesn't need to,just a suggestion.

waffleKoan:Student Jester?Looks like a story to be told behind your Sketch any more updates?

daldbaatar:The Sinister Jester, very Vibrant powerful image.Like the detail in the costume and the way you got the crackle in the foreground.:rocker:

albertocubatas:Wow man, how many ideas have you come up with?!Makin' me feel like a slacker.
The JOKER card nicely done,I prefer the latest version. The added background and stains nice touch.

freddydark:Very nice illustration, tells the story you mentioned without words.

Tipa:Good start ,like the use of colours for his costume, maybe his arms/hands need different poses.
His closest hand to the bird could be palm up for the bird to land on/or take off?The other arm could be holding
an instrument,Staff, balls, another bird ?. Just some ideas.

KevinR:Great feel of movement and Good characters, looking forward to your colouring.

Angel Intheuk:Hehehehe makes me smile.Good characters, want to see updates :)

matoohan:Jester with dynamic attitude, like both poses the arm handstand and your floating Jester, looking good.

Iliada:Glad you were inspired from the thread,me too ;)Good start, any more updates?

NZOB1:Aerobics Jester,funny idea.

rEPPEP:Very interesting costume, like the juggling pose.

Macaruba:Lots of good WIP sketches and well put together final line drawing
Should look great coloured.Great work :)

artina:As I mentioned before, like the style of your work.Good Job!

Started out on this challenge with trying to do a creepy jester. It wasn't working, so I scrapped it and went a different route.

Dreygus
April 23rd, 2009, 06:58 PM
In researching the jester, I saw some beautiful costumes and masks that begged to be utilized in a character concept. I do enjoy drawing costumes and clothing, even though the folds can be a bit tricky. Here's my sketch of my lady Jester. Not really very funny, but I'm going more for the fantasy aspect here.

Nice jobs! Rosatron and Gnahz, I like yours, and see a lot of improvement in your works. A couple of buts... Rosatron, I love it, yet to me the hard solid light kills the color, I think if you represented it illuminating the subject, it´d be less distracting than as an overlay, and it would be equally understandable.

Gnahs, not bad at all, great change!... but don´t you tire of the yellow backgrounds?

Good luck to everyone!

The Antarctican: Thank you :) I'm glad you like it! I think it's probably the best thing I've done for one of these competitions. Where've you been? I noticed you haven't entered this round. You been away? Hope you join the next one!

Macaruba: I really like how your designs coming along, and I'm glad you went with the hyena for your Jester :) I think that was a good choice. I also like how you've included other animals in the scene. Oh and nice WIP animation, I like how you do them.

S.C.P: I like the lighting in your design, I think you’ve captured it quite well. I like how you painted the flame too. I like the contrast between the Jester and his sceptre, it’s funny, the expressions are great.

GRMC: Nice design! I like the pose. I think you need to make it so he’s looking out at you from the picture rather than down. I think it’s his left eye that needs to be adjusted to achieve that and maybe slant his eyebrows down a bit to make his expression and grin a bit more evil looking? Just a suggestion.

KevinR: Your design’s a lot clearer now that you’ve developed the sketch :) Hope you get it coloured in time!

Angel IntheuK: Great piece! I like the colours and the Jester’s expression is great. I like the simple background too, and how you’ve painted the floor, it’s got a really shiny look to it.

gnahz: Very bright and vibrant! Great expression and pose, and I like the quote that goes along with it!

rosatron: Love yours! The idea is awesome! I really like the Jester’s shocked ‘uh-oh’ expression, hehe! I really like the lion too :)

Good luck everyone!

The Antarctican: Thank you :) I'm glad you like it! I think it's probably the best thing I've done for one of these competitions. Where've you been? I noticed you haven't entered this round. You been away? Hope you join the next one!

I think it's one of your best too. I think the finish is really tight. You can tell you were inspired by this round. I like this style very much. I favour Illustrator for these sorts of challenges more often than not but I must admit I think you've found a great balance between stylized and a photoshop 'finished' quality.

Yes I'm having to sit this one out. I'm in the process of moving to Australia and while I managed to bring alot of my kit down with me, saddly there wasn't enough room in my case for my scanner, so I am unable to scan anything into my mac. I did some sketches on the plane but I kinda knew I'd never get them up on here. So I hope I'll be able to join in the next challenge.

MACARUBA - Again I love your animated works in progress to completion. You have a great knack for extracting originality from the challenges and this is just as strong in concept as your previous pieces. The idea is hilarious. The hyena would so be the joker in the animal kingdom, that's a well observed premise. My only quibble would be that the background and the foreground are clashing with one another and the animals are getting lost a little. I wonder if a finer line around the plant life would help to reduce it's impact... ? The Elephant and the Zebra (especially his teeth) are full of character. Another fine addition to your already classic collection of monthly challenges.

Good work
