Here's mine, it's a bit sloppy I know but if anyone wants to color it please do so. Designed with a Hind in mind.

Perhaps to much a plane with rotor-wings.
Question:
How do you draw rotating wings convincingly?
(colorpencils, app. 90 min.)

slowly im getting this drawing shading thing. OC and unsharp mask in ps. 300% .5 radius eh about 45 mins. anyone want the wpe file?
speedy helis dont exist. but ist fun to do. aerodynamics might be the best way to get ya a speedy one. and light material use. and put a kid in it. tell him its a video game :)

Oops ... there is something seriously wrong with my "SpeedyCopter". Can you see this?
Edit:
Velo + Niq: - you're both right!! I think this heli will crash. Hopefully the pilot can unknot his legs soon enough.
dfacto - very sophisticated ... the heli you made !! Good rendering too.

Here is a really interesting page about how Helicopters work. I found the third page of this especially useful.
www.howstuffworks.com/helicopter1.htm
SecondChance - I think your rotor wings are drawn very nicely for movement, except the far back one appears to be rotating in the wrong direction! Also, after reading that article I know that you need counter-thrust so the plane doesn't rotate with the blades. I dont really see any there. :)
niq3d
December 16th, 2003, 08:12 AM
I think I see what you mean! I believe rotor blades work better when they all move in the same direction! (at least when they are connected to the same hub)
perhaps they are for decorative purposes only
Giggles aside, I do like your drawing, I might use a similar angle for mine (if I get around to finishing up what I'm doing in time!)

actualy on second glance there isn't enough room for the pilot's legs, I find it helpful to consider the pilot/drivers' position before anything else when doing vehicle concepts. (this could be just a few scribbled ovals to get an idea of the pilots size/posture) This helps me to develop an idea of scale for the vehicle as a whole.
Hope this helps

Velo - nice work!! The bend tail, roundish shape and colors makes me think of an insect. Is that your inspiration? You draw the rotor-wings clever. Nobody can tell how (- many wings & rotation direction).

Agreed. I intended to join th DSG, but I'll wait until the machines are done taking over, and are lying in a rusting heap. This is to be taken more as an indication of my ineptitude with/disinclination to draw machines than mere whining.

Nice concept. I think the key here is-I hate to say it-thinking outside the box. The usual military/movie/video game type mechanical design gets old for me.

Okay, my five year old son Holden is very excited about the idea of machines right now, so here's his contribution (it's a medical helicopter):
http://www.in-sight.net/Sketches/holdensHelicopter.gif
MadSun, I agree with you about seeing the same designs repeated (miliatry, game, etc.). Unfortunatetly, I think popular culture is inundated with certain expectations, so it's especially nice to see something unexpected, like yours.
MadSun
December 16th, 2003, 07:35 PM
dfacto, I really like your design, but it is not an autogyro. It is a ducted fan lift vehicle-if you have counter-rotating fans you dont need a tail rotor. Don't mean to preach, but i grew up with this-dad's an engineer.
oregano,
I'm glad you see this. I hope others can too. It's great to see your son getting in on it. Potential artist?

I went for the old counter rotating (and invisible!) blades, as a side note this doubles as a bottle opener!
hopefully I'll have more time to play tomorrow.
I think the point mentioned above about thinking outside the box is well worth taking on board, I'll do this on tomorrows post.

Hey. This is my first post, I never realized conceptart.org had forums, eheheehe. It's based on a dragonfly, fastest bug on earth i think.
I really love the variety of styles in everybodys submissions, so much stuff I see today is anime influenced.

Nice topic and some nice pics...
Rho: I love the concept, but that tail rotar won't work way down there, it will just flip the vehical around up side down.
Apathy: Its good that you post in every dsg, but maybe its time to stop naming them all after your lover? :) The side window looks a bit off, and I would lengthen the blades.
MrKayne: I like the chunky look.
Wystro: I like the design, but I would put the tail rotar at the front so it can work against the main rotar. The yellow is a bit harsh.
Avalos: nice.
Odd: Always awsome.

Ooooh... burn! Hey it was only two.. From now on they will be named using variations with the letters P, O and X starting with OxPoo first thing tommorow.
Other than that thanks! yup side window is a bit off and lengthening the blades would look better.

I think I'll do a little more on this... it could certainly use more work, but... I dunno... Maybe I go to sleep instead?
Rotor gave me a lot of difficulty... both in technique and in visualizing the goal.
...Think I'm gonna force myself into a "Reference Week" soon, and mandate that every dsg I do be somehow based on real study. I gotta start pulling from sources outsida my brain.

dfacto - Nice ducted fan lift vehicle! Very pretty.
Madsun - What a great design... excellent rendering... Looks like some lovingly hand-built kit to me.
Avalos - Pretty typical modern chopper look, but nice perspective and a real sense of movement in this pic.

***EXPLANATION ALERT***
Thanks for the terminology, but then I think its maybe a ducted fan lift vehicle autogyro because those things on the outside of the main body are supposed to be jet engines. I just haven't done it from any other angles yet, so its hard to see. Is it still a ducted fan lift vehicle then? I'm curious to know.
Awesome stuff MadSun and Oregano. You've inspired me to do another one, just to try and match your skills.

I see everyone's been busy.
Hey, dfacto, here's some more tech-geek stuff. An autogyro has an un-powered rotor. It just rotates from the air moving through it. So it can't hover.
Hand-good stuff, kind of organic.
