Is Sketchup capable of rendering appropriate shadows to a model through positioning a light source (For the free downloadable version)?

Yes. I say, just download it and try it. Note that you don't place a light, you only have access to a directional light aka the sunlight. Its also based on world location and what ever angle you set to north. In sketchup 7 under the Model info window you can click on location to set the north angle and world location.
If you want something more fancy Lightup will do omni, spot and generate ambient occlusion maps all in sketchup. There is a free demo but it has limited time.

Yes, as mentioned, Sketchup does not have lights other than sunlight. There are, however, a number of free renderers, some of which do have movable lights that are very realistic. IDX Renditioner (http://www.idx-design.com/IDX/IDXRenditioner/FreeVersionofIDXRenditionerExpress/tabid/1011/Default.aspx) is the one I know. It's worth looking at some others.
