All the drawings in this sketchbook thread will be made using a Cintiq mostly with Photoshop...
(Added Aug. 31, 2010 - after mid 2010, most entries will be oil paintings, many of which will have been initially composed and laid out using the Cintiq and Photoshop)

Thanks for having a look... I like the idea of a sketchbook thread. I am going to keep adding to this one. Yeah... the Cintiq is quite amazing. Having worked with a tablet for many years, I wasn't sure how I'd react to the Cintiq. I got it a week ago... I'm in love with it. It was love at first stroke...

One thing I've discovered with the Cintiq is the draw/erase technique. I've used it a bit with tablets as well, but on the Cintiq it seems more like draw/erase on steroids. One Cintiq side button throws the pen tip into draw mode and the button next to it throws it into erase mode. Back and forth with ease, so drawing with eraser is as easy as drawing with pen (pencil). The effects are swift. ...and no smudging or eraser dust... :)

An experiment - Two drawings of the same setup described below.
The upper drawing is pencil on paper and made by viewing the set up and the reference photo on a flat screen monitor. There was no tracing or other devices used while making the drawing. Completely eyeballed from the setup and the reference photo.
The lower is a digital Cintiq drawing. I traced a simple contour drawing of the major shapes, and then made the drawing while eyeballing the reference photo, comparing it to the drawing as I proceeded, but not using any tracing technique.

I suspect very soon, if not already, there will be no need for bridges between traditional and digital artwork... There are so many artists using traditional materials that use digital in some way in the development of their work.

Working on a new group of character sketches for a new large painting in the same style as "The Irreverent Rapture" (http://eyewoo.eyewoo.net/~admin2/) finished over a year ago. Not sure of the title for the new "epic," but I have a more-or-less idea in mind. Sketches done on the Cintiq...

however, if you're concerned with how a cintiq drawn picture looks to a traditional one when viewed on a computer, you can try scanning your graphite ones in greyscale.

The teapots near the beginning - one done in pencil and scanned, and the other done with the Cintiq - both the same setup. I did not digital enhancement on the pencil scan, so what is seen is pretty much what it actually looks like.

More preliminary drawings done with a Cintiq. The totems in the drawing will be about 36" tall in the final painting, which will be 44" X 72"
(note: sorry - the forum software runs all the images together - there are four separate images - the main one and 3 details)

Love your tight crosshatching. Since you mention it is digital you must be working at a really high resolution to capture those tiny strokes eh?
I need to try a cintiq in the future. What Cintiq model are you using?

hueyyeng - Thanks... I'm working at a pretty high resoulution. 200ppi on a final composition that will be 44" x 72"
tokidokizenzen "I will not mention the Cintiq.. Doh!" ... not sure I understand ???
Mischeviouslittleelf - fuzzy... well, the images are knocked way down in resolution for display on the web. Also, these are just sketch guides for a final painting. I'll transfer the composition to the panel and then paint over it with oils.
Teundeboer - I actually got the Cintiq specifically to do drawings. Lot of freedom that does not exist with pencil on paper. No smudging, noe eraser dust... and the most spectacular - setting the stylus button to switch the tip from pencil to eraser. That is an incredible advantage.
rogerb and Swanii - give a shot... it is amazingly fun!
destinyapocalypse - Thanks... :)

I like your concepts with people and object intertwined to create other shapes. Good stuff.Yeah... here's the thing, using Photoshop, set the forward stylus button on erase... and the hatching technique gets put on steroids -- switching instantly back and forth between drawing and erasing. It is the character of digital. Each medium has its own character, and that - for me - is a main one for digital...
It can be set that way with a tablet as well... not just the Cintiq, though I have to say the Cintiq is amazing. When I fist started using it, I was expecting something pretty good. It turned out being one of the few things so far in my life that so far exceeded expectations, I was totally doped. Amazed!

Awesome work, looks like a traditional pencil sketch!
Yes... I set the Photoshop opacity and flow to about 50% and mode to multiply. That way when a line draws over another line, the intersection gets slightly darker like a pencil drawing. Works well with either cintiq or tablet.

For sometime now I've been working on processes for starting a painting digitally and ending up with oil paint. I've pretty much worked out the process that I see using for the foreseeable future. A demo is on my website from the Process option (http://honepie.com/display.ezc.php?mnElm=13&which=2&direc=ezc.process-_start_with_drawing&listFi=ezc.process-_start_with_drawing&sub=ezc.process-_start_with_drawing/demo.html) on my site menu. Check it out and let me know what you think... I'd like to know how other people are using the same or similar techniques
Below is the full composition from which the demo detail was taken. The composition has been drawn on my Cintiq and is still developing, with quite a bit of work left to do. The little red box encloses the demo piece. The full piece will be about 6 feet x 4 feet.

On my driving trip through the west... I thought I would only have paper and pencil, but driving across Kansas, it occurred to how to set up a remote studio for oil painting... one that could be easily set up in a small room (like a motel or room in a friend's house). So in Denver I supplied myself with the essentials.
Here's the first, a test piece, started and finished in a spare room at my niece's home in Basalt, CO. It's a small pitcher from a photo I took in a museum. I should have made a note about what it is, but, at the time, my only interest was to get a photo for a painting test.

I'm going to get back to drawing the layout for the large painting - hopefully soon. I've been setting up a new studio and sort of living in Basalt, Colorado and Phily, driving between the two every other month or so, taking stuff from Phily to Basalt. I should make the final move next summer... and then I'll be able to get back to the layout and large painting. Until then I'm having a good time just doing the small representational still lifes and landscapes.

Oh wow dad! That looks amazing with the color! However, the only thing that kind of irks me is that I feel the background and the people in the foreground are really really disconnected. You may be going for that sort of 2d feeling, but I think it would look even better if you could somehow create a sense of depth in the background plane. Maybe darken it? Have it appear that the people in the foreground are under spotlight? Who knows.
Hone
December 1st, 2009, 11:00 PM
Good crit... that is one of the main challenges to deal with when doing the oil painting... There are a couple points where the background and foreground interact with each other... the top winged character is part of the "spirit" world and melds into the real world with the bottom winged character. The flat characters are the members of the spirit/marionette world that affect the real world. The background is mostly in their world. The other point of intersection is the series of shadows on the ground, caused by the light in the background.
All in all, it's a challenging thing to pull off and I'm hoping to be able to...

Maybe extend the grass beneath the tree so it doesn't look like it's floating in space? Also, I'm assuming the light source is coming from the top right corner, so you could up the contrast on the objects closer to it, and then transition lighter and lighter as you go across, to make things pop? It already pops ALOT though, so that might be going overboard? Gah! Conundrum!
Hone
December 2nd, 2009, 09:13 AM
The area you have circled is another area of connection between the back ground or back (spirit) world and the foreground real world. I do still have some thinking to working to do on that area, but I pretty sure it will not get completely worked out until the final oil painting... I'm also planning on moving some studd around in that area when I get the Cintiq set up again at the studio.
See you in about 9 hours...

your hatch work is amazing! i love it!I'd have to give a lot of credit to the Cintiq. As you may know, it is as easy to hatch with the eraser as it is with the brush, which allows for easy access to a technique that would be far more difficult with traditional materials.

Another landscape - oil on panel 15.75" x 12"... I may do a bit of glazing on it when it's completely dry to move a few areas more into shadow...
There have been several other landscapes between the last shown here and this one. This is the first that I'm starting to feel comfortable with.

Here's another landscape... a bit unusual..
"Breaking Through" oil on panel 12" x 9"
It depicts the sun just breaking through on a cold, snowy, windswept day in Colorado.

you've got some awesome stuff here, you certainly know how to paint
if you want some constructive criticism, I think you're way too obsessed with getting every little detail right. as a style I can see that working, but at times it hurts your works - I never really know where to look. It can pay to play with the overall level of detail and the values a bit to make an image more effective. decide on a focal point and push everything else back by using broader strokes or slightly darker values

good luck with your nextsYes, I am in a learning mode... I'm coming from 15 years as a commercial illustrator using the digital media. When I retired, I started oil painting. That was about 3 years ago... Still learning. During that 3 years, a lot of my information about oil painting has been picked up from the http://RationalPainting.org website, which is a no nonsense site for serious painters using paint rather than digital. A lot of great information there...

Starting to fool around with some drawing using ArtRage on my iPad... It's not a Cintiq, but it's pretty cool beans...
Using ref photos from my "Heads" library. When I've got the technique down better, I'm going to start doing some from life...

Yes... post #125 is my favorite so far. I've really just started doing landscapes since moving from an urban setting (Philly) to Colorado last July (The Great Roaring Fork Valley: Aspen - Basalt - Carbondale - Glenwood Springs). Beautiful landscapes lay around here like graffiti in a city... There's a lot of it!
