Since I have a job in the industry, I find it harder and harder to do personal work at home. I am now in a situation where I work at work and do nothing at home and I feel like I am slacking. I can't find myself to get motivated outside of work to do anything productive. I want to do stuff, but its getting harder and harder.

Does anyone have a similar situation? and how do you deal with it?

you gotta just do it. don't overthink it, just sit down at home in front of the sketch pad and let your hand start roaming.

its the exact mentality as getting home from work exhausted and falling onto the couch. you think to yourself 'i should get off my ass and workout for awhile' and the hardest part of the workout is getting your carcass up. if you can make it to the front door you know your body will go out and automatically go through the motions of jogging or whatever. but the first step is always the biggest hurdle.

i think once you get past a mental obstacle you'll find things will start to fall into place.

I have the exact same problem and the only way that I can (occasionally) over come it is to do something that feels entirely unlike work, like life drawing or taking my easel outdoors and paint in the sun while listening to music. I don't really torture myself too bad over not working outside of work, I figure doing a lot of unrelated stuff gives me more inspiration for work.

This is a common problem for people who work in creative industries (EDIT: so common that Qitsune and I crossposted :P). Don't try to do the same thing that you're doing at work. For instance, if you're drawing monsters and aliens all day, either concentrate on observational work or abstraction in your personal time.

I keep stuff around me. Old paper, wood, hunks of metal, chipboard, etc.. Working on a diiferent surface kind of makes me feel like a mad scientist rather than an "artist". It takes me in completely different directions. And of course looking at cool stuff ouside of my bread and butter. Pick up different kinds of annuals, books and mags. Seems to have worked fo me and now motivation is never a problem.
