The term "surface interval" is used to describe the amount of time a diver spends out of the water between two or more dives.

At Surface Interval Clothing we are dedicated to creating designer clothing for diving enthusiasts while using designs that even non-divers appreciate. (Similar to MMA or motocross apparel lines).

Zafiro Clothing Co. has teamed up with Surface Interval Clothing and we are looking to add an additional artist to the design team.

An area of immediate interest is artwork depicting ship wrecks. The artist should be able to use existing photos and sketches of ships while in service in conjunction with underwater videos shot of the ship wrecks in their current state to create interesting designs.

Other areas of interest also include mythical creatures, wartime military, and diving equipment designs.

Interested applicants must demonstrate the following skills:
- Ability to work independently.
- Take written/verbal direction for basic concepts.
- Work within moderate timelines.
- Ability to incorporate clothing design limitations into their artwork.
- Ability to incorporate provided materials on subject matter into the designs.

Additional Skills (Not Required)
- Experience with scuba diving (Recreational and Technical)
- Experience in the clothing industry -primarily designer t-shirts and accessories.

All designs will include the name of the artist within the inner tag of the clothing.

The offered rate is $40 USD per hour. The average design is expected to be between 3 - 4 hours with more intricate designs up to 10 hours. Included as attachments are examples of the quality of work desired within a 3 - 4 hour timeframe.

The artist will be paid on a contractual basis per design. Once the initial concept sketch is approved payment will be made to the artist in the amount of $100 USD with the remaining balance paid upon successful receipt of completed design using Paypal. All artwork must be delivered in vector format.

All commissioned artwork will become intellectual property of Surface Interval Clothing/Zafiro Clothing through a contractual agreement signed by the artist. The artist will retain the right to include the designs in their portfolio.

If you are interested in further details please send your resume and a link to your portfolio to artwork@SurfaceIntervalClothing.com

Thanks in advance.

One suggestion is to drop the hourly payment and just offer a flat fee per design.

Clearly you have a per piece budget in mind (thus the 3-4 hour suggestion), and as long as they meet your deadline and agree to your budget I'm sure you don't really care if it takes them 1 hour or ten, you just want a good design.

An hourly rate punishes fast artists who may be of higher quality, and that's assuming everyone is honest about the time spent. Even an honest artist working on designs from home can easily sit and noodle on an idea for hours if he has the incentive to do so. Work that is labored over for hours isn't always better. I'm not really sure where you got your time estimates anyways, as it's really hard to apply one artists work speed to another artist.
