If you guys've read my most recent post in the Lounge, you'd know I've been having difficulties with finding my own art style lately, especially when I use Photoshop. So, I decided to stop using it for a while, and got back to using Painter instead. Here's my latest piece, done in Painter, using only the palette knives, pastels and custom chalks and textures for the first time.

Only the facial features and head placement was referenced from a photograph. I'm quite happy with the final result. This piece was also highly inspired by two awesome artists here on the forums, El Coro and Android. :) Thank you for sharing your work with us.
And as for who he is? Here's a clue if you're not sure: He once played the leading role in a TV series that involved Quickenings. ;)
He is: [Adrian Paul, who played Duncan MacLeod in Highlander]

He looks like a younger, more boyish Duncan. I really like the look of it though. I especially like the color and texture around the screen left (his right) eye. Great work!

I'll save you some time and energy by saying: Don't worry about finding your own style!! Trust me, the masters didn't consciously TRY and be different. It comes on its own through tons and tons of practice. Don't bother with it. Just draw and paint and draw and paint and draw and paint and etc. etc. etc. and your own style will manifest. Peace

Rusty Red Robot: Thanks! :) Yes, the portrait is based on a photograph when he was much younger.
Phuzion: Cool! I'll keep that in mind.
endregan: Indeed! ;)

That is sound advice. I think I'll use that myself.

I imediatley recognized that face without having to take a second look.
Absolutley gorgeous work!
I would usually at least try to give some constructive criticism, but I don't know what to say about it.
I love the way you drew his lips, and i'm amazed that you found an effectove way of showing stubble!
I can never get that right.

looks good.
I really like the textures on the the collar and the backround.
you know....this would make a great 20's to mid 20's Anakin Skywalker pic.
and I also will take the advice about your own style to heart.

eknight: :chug:
Elquin: That's cool! Thank you for your comments. :) The stubble look was done the same way as the other textures, with a custom grainy chalk and custom paper.
Edwin Bickford: Thanks! Hahah, you're not the first person to mention Star Wars related characters in regards to this image. :D

hey, it's good. it looks nice. clear, easy to distinguish and clean lined. the texture is really great, especially around the right eye and the background. like the hair. i ain't a pro, but i suggest you work on the expressivity, he looks pretty "blank" to me.:patriot:

on second thought, forget the expresivity part. it was a first (and wrong) impression.
