It really does reduce energy consumption in the major metropolitan areas for a short time, but I wonder more what it would be like if say, office buildings and such properly turned off their lights at night when the cleaners weren't there every night. Or if the primary industries stopped processing the earth for a day or so. Or if the entire internet in a country was crippled by a fishing boat clipping the undersea cable that connects it to the rest of the world...
Oh wait.

But ghosts need light too. And jobs.

We aren't taking this far enough, we need to completely neutralize our CO2 emissions for the hour. Now understand, this does mean that for the hour, nobody is allowed to exhale, but its for the planet and stuff, so don't be selfishly thinking about your own requirements.

Well, I didn't pat attention and had all my lights on. Seemed as though all the neighbors did as well. If they want to make a real statement they need to push for businesses to turn off lights and signs at night....my three bulbs aren't making much of a difference.

Sure, okay...gotta get the slippery slope potshots in somehow, I guess.
Screw the damn carbon...you've obviously never had the state of California living below you, hankering for moar moar energy. :D

I was at a pub here in beirut that had the lights off for an hour, the candlelight was awesome, a friend got booked to perform his jazz with a sax player that day. (he plays the double bass.)
Screw the earth tho.. :P

I love working and reading by candlelight and really wanted to take part in this but I was driving through LA during the hour and well, at least I was in a hybrid? :bashful: I will say that the twinkling lights of the valley did not seem any more diminished than usual though, which made me sad. Is there a website where we can see some stats of how much energy was saved during that hour?

the local power company reported no drop in power usage.
several large companies enjoyed free advertising in the advance media coverage, tho...that has to count for something?
i wonder how many people were watching the tv for news about the event, while enjoying the usual feast of fat and sugar. "Look, Timmy...that's us! WE'RE HELPING!"
eco friendliness has long since been assimilated into the Spectacle....just another commodity nao.

I had my lights off, but my computer on, working feverishly on a 3-D model, so it was pretty redundant. >_>
But then I forgot, and our dorm decided to switch the power off, so I lost like an hour's work because I didn't save. :(

Well, i just feel that we should concentrate on how to tackle other issues like famine, pollution and extinction of species. :)
