Positive and distracting are relative terms. ;) For me, I generally start out with something in the realm of Rammstein, Disturbed, etc. until I'm through the proportions and composition stage, then on to stuff like Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley.. really anything that chills me out the rest of the way.

My top inspiration, if I had to pick just one group, still has to be Delerium. They're an amazing mix of chant, techno, and addictive vocals.

The epic album Once by Nightwish makes for a great sweeping narratively inspiring sort of music as well.

For something soothing and moderately upbeat which makes perfect background music for the arting, try October Project.

Techno/trance. I tend to run through Juno Reactor, Paul Oakenfold, the Einhander soundtrack, Robert Miles' Children, and anything remotely electronica without lyrics. It has to be ambient because singing lyrics tend to distract my headspace when I least need it.

If I do decide to go with something else, I go and listen to all of my Yasunori Mitsuda CDs, because his music is so beautiful and relaxing. A good run through his KiRite or Chrono Cross soundtrack tends to do the trick.

I second the vote for Pandora! When I'm not around my personal collection, this place is awesome as it lets you tailor your music listening to play ONLY the songs you like. If you don't like a song, you can have it removed from your station. Or if you're tired of hearing a song, you can 'put it on the shelf' for a month. They have lots of underground and lesser known stuff. A great place to discover new artists:)

I have that one also. :) Xenogears' soundtrack was the reason why I got into Mitsuda and VGM in the first place. 'Flight' in particular is awesome. If only it wasn't so hard to find the first Parasite Eve soundtrack, I'll nab it, too. I really liked her work on that one. I'm hoping she makes a strong homerun with Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

I find it most relaxing to be listening to classical and modern classical music as well as any form of jazz. I would recommend John Williams, Aaron Copland or Samuel Barber for your orchestras and then some Maynard Ferguson, Wynton Marsalis, Miles Davis and Big Phat Band for your jazz (Maynard Ferguson plays some Hard Bop and has some intense trumpet parts. The Big Phat Band is very similar, but is made up of a whole lot of great musicians that like to revolve around jazz and swing. Wynton Marsalis is a trumpet god, put simply, none other can compete with his talent and Miles Davis is a legend.)

Besides that? Anything goes; from Genesis to Talking Heads, from Aesop Rock to the Barenaked Ladies, from Parliament Funkadelic to Basshunter.

I find anything calm works for me, the album I'm listening to alot now is the Fleet Foxes debut and EP. Along with that there's the stuff I fall back on, if I can't choose what to play; Dummy by Portishead, any album by Nick Drake, Love's Forever Changes, Kate Bush's Aerial, OK Computer by Radiohead, and recently I've been listening alot to Bat for Lashes debut.

I'm also one of those who can't listen to vocal music, I always keep it purely instrumental. I muchly prefer classical music and out of that, some simple and beautiful piano music is my absolute favourite. I can listen to Chopin's nocturnes all day long. Some beautiful cello music never ceases to calm me, as well.

Some atmospheric and newer music is good too! Such as Loreena McKennitt, E.S.Posthumus, Craig Armstrong etc. Good stuff. I sometimes put on some of my yoga relaxation music, but I usually end up producing some weird stuff out of that, heh.

I can, deifinitely, agree with NIN. His music is so visual intensive, IMO, any way. I'll also add a vote for what ever works. I find, if I'm working on a peaceful piece, I'm usually listening to something more airy, less beat driven. But, if it's something busier, or more violent...I'm reaching for something that suits that style.
