Wacom USA Press Release
Exerpt: Vancouver, WA – Mar. 25, 2009 – Wacom® today unveils the long anticipated Intuos®4, a revolutionary new professional pen tablet that delivers new features and unparalleled performance to photographers, designers and artists seeking optimal control and improved productivity. Inspired by members of Wacom’s professional community, the next generation Intuos is anchored by the Intuos4’s amazing new pen performance, capable of capturing the slightest nuance of pen pressure against the tablet surface, as well as offering 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity. Other innovative product enhancements include a refined and intelligent industrial design that provides real advancements in looks, comfort and control. Specific workflow and productivity tools to savor include the customizable shortcut and modifier keys with accompanying OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) displays, which allow users to see, via the displays, what the keys are currently set to.
All New Pen Performance
The Intuos4 Grip Pen features Wacom’s new proprietary Tip Sensor technology, offering users near-zero (one gram) starting pressure for the most natural-feeling experience of any digital pen to date. “Now, any writing, art or design tool can start with an incredibly light touch, emulating the same feel, response and result derived from working with traditional media,” said Don Varga, Senior Product Manager for Wacom Technology Corp. Additionally, the Intuos4 pen delivers 2048 levels of pressure, doubling the resolution of the pen’s pressure curve to further enhance feedback and expand the creative effects within software applications that support pressure sensitivity. “Delivering a consistently responsive and fruitful pen tablet experience starts with the pen. The Intuos4 Grip Pen provides a broader range of input options that will delight even the most discriminating professional,” continues Varga. “In addition, our latest pen technology should encourage Wacom’s software partners to continue to expand pen-related features and functionality.” The Intuos4 Grip Pen also features a pressure-sensitive eraser and two customizable side switches for setting commands such as double-click and right-click on the pen. For those looking for a pen with a thicker barrel, a wide-body Intuos4 replacement grip is being made available as an optional accessory.
Breakthrough Design Improves Workflow, Boosts Productivity
With its ergonomic design, the ultra-slim Intuos4 pen tablet is the ideal creative instrument for working with digital content. Its new reversible (ambidextrous) design puts all of the shortcut and modifier keys in the ideal position for right-handed or left-handed users. The ExpressKeys™ are conveniently located on one side of the tablet, making them all available to the users’ non-dominant hand. To move from right-handed to left-handed use, simply rotate the tablet 180 degrees and change the orientation of the illuminated icons within the Wacom Tablet driver software. These application-specific ExpressKeys are instrumental in helping improve workflow and boost productivity by placing commonly used commands right at the fingertips. The close proximity of these tools to the actual work area is efficient and comfortable and helps save valuable time by minimizing dependence on the keyboard without taking focus away from the pen hand. New to the Intuos4 are illuminated (OLED) displays (not featured on the Intuos4 small) that provide a helpful reminder as to the current function of each ExpressKey. With past Intuos versions, users had to rely on their memory to recall the position of their specific settings. As these settings can be application specific, the displays will update immediately as the user changes between applications.
Also new to the Intuos4 is the introduction of a user-defined Touch Ring capable of controlling up to four different functions in any application. A button located in the center of the ring “toggles” the ring between functions such as zoom, scroll, brush size adjustment, canvas rotation and layer selection. One of the four LEDs located along the perimeter of the Touch Ring indicates the current function. “The Intuos4 design carries form and function to new heights,” said Varga. “Never before has a Wacom pen tablet so elegantly provided such tangible workflow and productivity enhancements.”
More Intuos4 Innovations
A new weighted pen stand not only provides a convenient pen holder, but also functions as a handy twist-off storage compartment for pen nibs and handy nib removal tool. Standard, felt, stroke and flex nibs ship with the Intuos4, allowing users to simulate working with a variety of traditional art and design materials. If users have a task for which they prefer a mouse, the Intuos4 includes the most advanced, cordless, battery-free mouse that Wacom has ever developed. A technology upgrade in the mouse allows the cursor to move based on both the direction and orientation of the mouse, delivering smooth and accurate tracking across the tablet surface. Each of the five buttons and the scroll wheel can be customized by the user.
Valuable Software
Intuos4 ownership entitles professionals to pick and choose valuable software titles based on individual needs. A selection of software applications from such industry leaders as Adobe®, Autodesk®, Corel® and Nik® are available to users following installation of an Intuos4 pen tablet. In addition, Intuos4 users will appreciate the significant upgrades to Wacom’s powerful, user-friendly driver software, including the introduction of radial menus for quick “penpoint” access to additional shortcuts or to launch applications.
Noteworthy Accessories
Intuos4 owners are encouraged to take advantage of some additional tools. For example, the 6D Art Pen supports the barrel rotation feature within such applications as Adobe Photoshop®, Illustrator® and Corel Painter® X to deliver natural brush effects, much like a calligraphy pen. The Intuos4 Airbrush offers users the ability to create and define paint patterns within certain creative programs. Intuos4 accessories are conveniently located at the http://www.wacomdirect.com Internet site.
“By listening to our customers we are able to deliver today a revolutionary pen tablet packed with new technologies and features that exemplifies Wacom’s commitment to the professional creative community,” said Joe Deal, President of Wacom Technology Corp. “The Intuos4 is a sophisticated pen tablet that artfully addresses their needs with exciting new pen performance and thoughtful detailing,”
The Intuos4, available on March 25, 2009, comes in four sizes to meet varying workflow and workspace requirements – small ($229 SRP), medium ($369 SRP), large ($499 SRP) and Extra Large ($789 SRP).

Any defined sizes (other than s, m, l, xl)? I don't see the specs (or the Intuos4) on Wacom's home page.

Not sure if it will be really useful but I would like to try that
I am curious also about the art pen (http://direct.wacom.com/stores/5/wd_images/KP701E_lg.jpg) with barrel rotation, in this photo it looks almost like a simple grip pen (http://direct.wacom.com/stores/5/wd_images/KP501E_lg.jpg). Another view needed to see the nib~

of course it will be useful especially to those of us who paint with a light touch, no need to dig into the tablet for some more sensitivity. plus that 1 gram pressure thing sounds great

Physically even if you use only the first 256 levels of pressure, it gives you already a full control on size of brush from 1 pixel to 256 pixels and same thing with opacity or anything else so you need to use a very light pressure to see the benefit I think.
plus that 1 gram pressure thing sounds great
Yep but I have no idea how was the needed activation force for intuos3 grip pen. I hope anyway the distance from 0 pressure to 2048 has been also doubled or just increased

I'm glad they modified the A4 size to wide screen - from 9x12 to 8x12.8. I kinda expected they to widen it, instead of cutting a bit of height and adding a little width (+0.8 inch), but nonetheless, the size difference between 6x11 and 8x12.8 should be sensible.
Does anybody know if it has only one USB port, or two, in case the user is left-handed? I just imagined if there's only one USB, the wiring would be a bit weird. I like the possibility to plug cable, it may give less stress when you travel (though I didn't it, as I don't have a notebook).
The brochure for new tip sensor said it draws much less current, but it's still a very small value, so I wonder if they did something with tablet's power consumption. And I believe it's important for those who do outdoor paintings.
Awww, why didn't they second logo for left-handed? It's just kinda ignoring them, as they will have to get used with flipped Wacom logo :/
I can't wait until someone gets it and test :)

Yes, two. I'm quite sure that the cable can be inserted into a "left handed" socket when it is flipped for lefties. I remember too, someone was asking about the possibility of an upside down logo when flipped but it appears that the Wacom logo is on both top and bottom - flipped.

March 25th, 2009, 05:25 AM
wow, i'm so glad they fixed light pressure. i hate how in wacom's drivers move slider to the softest position and basicly you loose all light pressure, the line is jumping too fast to the hardest pressure and basicly you can't use it in other software except painter because it has brush tracking...
f.e. if you want to achieve in photoshop the darkest value with opacity and flow 'ON' for pressure in the properties of the brush, you loose the lightest touch for smooth line from thin to thick. but sometimes i wonder maybe i have broken intuos3 or pen... does anybody have the same pressure response in wacom's drivers?
Liu Yang
March 25th, 2009, 06:13 AM
teho: old intuos 2 driver have pressure curve control, which can let you have nice pressure control even using very light touch. I just can't understand why wacom remove this function after intuos 3 release.

"Intuos4 Art Pen with a unique chisel-shaped nib"
I didn't see it, unless it's a really tiny chisel?
and honestly, I liked the shape of the old art-pen; right now it looks almost like a default pen, and that rises a question why they didn't put it right into the box.
and arrrrghhhh, that thing is so stylish,
(and is going to be so overpriced in Russia, lol)
I really love how much effort wacom put into clever designing of literally everything this time

I'll post what my impression of it is when I get it, but there's already way too many reviews out there for the Intuos4, and it hasn't even been out for a single day! And only a handful of them are from actual pros who use it for what it's intended for... so not much quality. I won't actually get mine until Wednesday according to UPS, 2nd day was an additional $40 :p

I love it so far.. I don't have much time to play with it unfortunately since I have to go away for the weekend now
I worried I would never use the buttons since I never took advantage of them on the Intuos3, but these are much handier. I automatically go to the keyboard still but I guess I just need to get used to the change
It feels a lot more precise than the Intuos3, like my lines are steadier. I think it's to do with the different surface. I much prefer it

Dude - I am getting one of these asap - never got on with my intuos3 as went through 4 of them via warranty due to painful raised ridges around the drawing area and the tablet bodies creaking (plus that tiny mouse never was good with my big hands!)
My current intuos3 is working ok now but I want to move on plus new shiny awesomeness beckons!!! This has really made my day! Just don't let me down this time Wacom!
Oh that's a point - where are the intuos4 made / how is the build quality?
Sorry - I'm rambling on here ... off dancing around room again - achoo!! - dance, dance, dance... ok tired now ... lol

Personally, I have an Intuos3 so I don't really see any significant features to upgrade too. If they added Bluetooth, I might consider.
Wow. Amazon has stock for it already and the intuos was only announced few days ago. that's fast.

Just ordered Large and Small for sketches, spent hours staring at Order button.
Yeah, I'm happy I'm keeping my 6 X 8 Intuos3 for my laptop for the same reason. My 22" WS is too big for it.
Actually, it looks like the Intuos4 only supports certain software for the 2048 pressure levels, at least that's what Wacom's website says. Took me going into Wacom-Asia to find this again... looks like only CS4??? (There's another list of software, but I think it's generic compatibility and only CS4 is mentioned as supporting the higher pressure levels...)
http://www.wacom-asia.com/intuos4/enhanced-software
On the Mac: All applications support 2048 levels.
Software List
This is list is incomplete of course. Come back soon to check it out!
Adobe
Photoshop CS4 - [2048] [Tilt] [Eraser] [Airbrush] [Art Pen]
Photoshop CS3/CS2/CS/7.0 - [1024] [Tilt] [Eraser] [Airbrush] [Art Pen]
Photoshop 6.0 and below - [1024] [Eraser]
Apple
Inkwell on Mac OS X v10.2+ [1024???] [Eraser]
There was mention of Painter 11 "now supporting" the Intuos4 as well but they're not saying whether that includes the pressure sensitivity. I would imagine it would... (link (http://www.photographyblog.com/news/corel_now_supports_wacom_intuos_4/))

So.. in other words, at this moment only two softwares in world are supporting 2k levels? :P I find it weird that how much levels can be detected is dependable on software, not only tablet drivers.
Now I'm really hoping that Adobe and Corel will release compatibility patches for previous version, otherwise there will be a lot of disappointments.

I just ordered a large! I can only describe what I'm feeling right now as an extreme disappointment at how slow time seems to be moving along now. Would Tuesday just friggin get here so I can tear into that box? What a sexy looking piece of hardware. I love the new layout of the function keys. I also love the idea of making the pen stand into a little accessory container as well. I'm mostly upgrading for the size and comfort of the tablet itself however.
Also, I can't wait till that new art pen is in stock again. I loved my 6d. In fact, about 25 of my 40+ custom Painter brushes made use of the rotation function. Mostly angled real-bristle brushes, Markers and pallet knife variations.
This will be replacing my 9x12 Intuos3 which has served me well for the past three years. However I outgrew the size of it and have since moved on to a 27 inch wide screen monitor. I love the idea of working at a more comfortable aspect ratio as when I upgraded my monitor, the bottom 2 inches of my tablets workable space were chopped off to accommodate the aspect ratio.

And the best about it is that it isnt tremendously expensive D:, i'll be sure to get a large one . My dad said that he'll give me the cintiq has a present one of these days :D.
Hmmm i have stoped by the site(wacom asia) and they have confirmed most of the 2014 levels of pressure sensitivity on a good bunch of applications like corel and photoshop, i am surprised that it depends on the application rather than the tablet itself i reallly didnt know that.

Am I right in thinking that the UK/Euro version doesn't come with either a mouse or the opportunity to download software?
Let me get this straight: A Large Intuos 4 costs around $499 USD (which is approx £350). In the UK I have to pay £430, which is about $615 USD.... and I get LESS for it? It's actually £373 before the UK government helps itself to a sizeable chunk of change by adding VAT. So, I don't blame Wacom for the cost difference, but cutting back on what's in the box (and downloadable) is inexcusable.

Best Buy tends not to have reliable stock for the Intuos and it depends on the store's market what sizes they carry. They may not even carry one that big. 85% of the time, I've seen BBY's carry the smallest version, but very rarely the ones above that.
I would just order it from Amazon and have it shipped to an American address. It's much cheaper anyway and Best Buy charges full retail most of the time. Just make sure the shipping option you choose is fast enough for you if you use the free shipping option.

I know I'm gonna be the wet blanket, but am I the only one that feels after 4 versions of intuos the mouse is still the most useless peripheral included? The rest far outshines this mouse, but no one talks about the mouse much (maybe CAD but they use the one with the lens cursor) and usually people don't want to use the mouse while they're drawing...specially since they can use the computer mouse more efficiently.
I wish Wacom would either get rid of the mouse and reduce the price a bit considering their site says it's as much as a grip pen: $69.95 or....make an illustrators package like they do with CAD versions where we'd get another grip pen instead. This would be even more useful since there's the tool-ID feature.
I mean other than the mouse which all versions of them have just sat in the box doing nothing, I'd rather resell my mouse back to Wacom (if they're on backorder) and get a second grip pen instead ;)

I never used the mouse either until I decided one day to try it. It saves desk space and keeps me from having to reach all over the place, which is a plus. So for me, it has worked fine (but I could do without it and I know most don't use it).
Without knowing the manufacturing costs, I don't know if it would make a huge difference to leave it out. I know it probably has some special sensor in it, but it's not pressure sensitive, so it's hard to say if it would be a big difference. And if it's cheap (which I suspect it is), then it adds another feature Wacom can advertise to justify the mark up...

Yeah, I use the mouse fairly frequently. Many 3D programs work better with one and the Wacom mouse obviously requires no extra space. I'd miss it if it wasn't there, although I'm sure I'd easily adapt to live without one. I've learned to do most things at a desk with a grip pen in my hand.

No. I don't need it but it'll feel great having that added comfort and control. I've seen a video or two of Android working on such a massive tablet and I get the sense that when you have a surface that size it becomes a playground just like a sheet of newsprint or a nice big canvas. A ton of freedom to move your arm and bang out those kinetic broad strokes. I have a large monitor and this would give me a near 1:1 ratio with very little stroke upscaling so there will also be an important element of added accuracy that I used to get with my 9x12 Intuos3 on a 17 inch monitor with a standard aspect ratio.
What it all comes down to is this. All of my other tablets have served me quite well for 4+ years each, this will be an investment that'll be well worth it and at least make the technical aspect of art making all the more enjoyable, fun and free. When I work traditionally, I love working big and then getting in really tight. Why wouldn't I want digital media to feel just as natural?
edit: Just as an added point, to Wacom's credit, I've never replaced a tablet due to technical issues. All of them worked just as well on the day I upgraded as when they did fresh out of the box. My very first Graphire I had in highschool is still getting good use by my two young cousins who are in grade school and having a blast with their free copy of Painter Essentials. Likewise, my Intuos3 is still going strong and will go to a good home as well.

Do you think for a hobbyist like myself the 8x12 might be a little overkill? I doubt I will have anything bigger than the 20in Dell LCD I have now any time soon but there is something about a bigger tablet that draws me in but perhaps I would just be wasting money. I formally had a Intuos 6x8 and it was fine, its just upgraditis. What do you guys think?
Also, I read a post on another forum stating the 2048 levels of pressure and other enhanced features are NOT available in all apps. The poster claimed this is due to the Intuos4 not being around when these apps were made. Is this true?
I think he misread something because this list at Wacom states to me that ALL of these apps have the full enhanced features of the Intuos4:

I mentioned it on page two (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2193245&postcount=50). I don't know, but the only item on the bottom list that says it supports 2048 pressure is CS4, and all the other versions of Photoshop and the other software clearly says 1024... The other list is just support for generic support for the tablet as far as I can tell, doesn't necessarily mean the enhanced pressure sensitivity.
Take a look at the caption where it mentions Macintosh though. It says all applications support 2048, but then at the bottom it mentions one application saying it only supports 1024 (which would really mean it's not "all" in that sense)? It's a very poorly written page, so I'm not 100% certain as this is only my interpretation of it. Not everything has been tested yet either and the list is not up to date according to the page, so I would just check the website for your software and don't even worry about the Wacom list...
What's really odd is there no such page like this on the U.S. site. Or at least I can't find it. You'd think the list would at least be duplicated there.

Some additional info for UK (and European) buyers. When you are offered a choice of software to download - choose wisely. You can only get one out of the three pieces of software offered. As an owner of full versions of Photoshop CS4 and Painter X I selected Autodesk's Sketchbook Express 2010 - but would have also had a look at Corel's Sketchpad too if I could have had two.
One other thing to note is that the default nib that came in the grip pen has worn noticeably in just one day - I was working on a freelance illustration though - not just noodling around. I hope packs of replacement nibs are available to buy soon, as I'd like to have some more back up. I'd rather have worn nibs that a worn or altered tablet surface though.

Yes, the nib wear is rather fast. I was wondering if the old plastic white ones will work in the meantime? (I haven't tried it yet) I'm just wondering because I noticed the nib itself is part of the reason for the friction along with the surface.

The old white standard Intuos3 white plastic nibs appear to work just fine. I'm probably selling my Intuos A5 to a workmate, but I'm hanging onto a couple of spare nibs at least until I can get some fresh ones. I suppose being the same dimensions, there's no reason they shouldn't work - they are after all just small bits of plastic... all the pressure stuff is in the pen itself is it not?

I talked to Wacom (us) and the tech started to tell me the pen technically has the pressure feature (Hardware) but that the software needs to be updated to take advantage of it. I pointed him to the link to the AU page where it basically confirms that a lot of software (even older) does support the new enhanced features.
I told him they should have something like that on the US site. Especially when it says all Mac apps support the new features. After telling him about the AU site he basically said all those apps on the list would work, 2048 pressure and all.

Hi:
In prepping my upcoming lynda.com Painter 11 title, I've been creating some graphics relating to the Intuos tablets.
Here is how I've currently got my Intuos4 set up. I've included a shot of the tablet surface so you can see how the OLED displays work:
http://homepage.mac.com/pixlart/.Public/Images/i4_UI.jpg (http://www.pixlart.com)
I've got 2 variations for brush resizing: The TouchRing is set up to resize in 2-pixel increments (a 1-pixel setting is good, as well). This control works well for fine detail work where small brush size changes are desired.
The OPT + CMD (Win: ALT + CTRL) button is used to invoke the adjustable brush size indicator. This is used for large brush size changes.
As you can see, I'm currently limiting the use of the TouchRing to 2 functions: Brush Resizing and Undo/Redo. I use these so much that I doubled them so that I'm only one click away from either function. And, to be honest, there aren't a lot of continuously variable controls available in Painter. Another option would be zooming. Painter 11 now restricts zooming to standard increments (5/10/25/33/50/66/75/100/200/300/400%. etc)—which is a good thing in my opinion. These zoom increments provide the best resized image quality as they are integers that minimize the jaggies at these zoom levels.
Here's how I have my Intuos3 set up:
http://homepage.mac.com/pixlart/.Public/Images/i3_UI.jpg (http://www.pixlart.com)
This layout uses the same controls as the Intuos4, just mapped according to the Intuos3 surface.
I arrived at this layout after a lot of adjustments over time.
Because the Intuos3 doesn't have built-in labels, I created some that I applied to my tablet with 2.5" clear packaging tape.
You can download a correct-sized PDF of my labels here:
John's Intuos3 Labels (http://homepage.mac.com/pixlart/.Public/Images/intuos3_labels.pdf)
I've got both left- and right-handed versions on the sheet.
Regarding the pens, the Intuos3 pens are not compatible with the Intuos4. Right now, the Intuos4 version of the 6D Pen is not yet available, and it will be an added expense for Intuos4 owners when it becomes available.
The extended pressure range is very noticeable and offers significant sensitivity enhancement. Those extra levels provide a much more tactile stroke and control at thin mark-making widths. There is a "Precision Mode" available (if you want to assign a key to it) that temporarily increases the tablet resolution. The effect is one of slowing the pen stroke down for very fine control.
The Intuos4 can be set up for left or right hand orientation. I'm left-handed, so I have the control surface on the right side of the tablet. There are 2 USB mini ports so that you will always have the cable located at the upper left or right edge of the tablet, which is the way you'll want it. The OLED displays flip for whichever orientation you've chosen.
Another feature that I've not yet gone into depth is the Radial Menu. This is a configurable onscreen menu that is triggered by a button on the tablet surface or the pen barrel. These menus float over any current onscreen imagery.
Here is the default Radial Menu:
http://homepage.mac.com/pixlart/.Public/Images/radial_menu.jpg (http://www.pixlart.com)
The top menu is the initial menu. It can be set up to have functions in all 8 pie slices.
The menus with the arrows near the center have a secondary menu, shown at the bottom of the above image.
Again, all of the commands can be programmed. In theory, you can have any number of sub-menus. Theoretically, most of Painter's commands could be organized in the Radial Menu's organizational structure.
Here's a look at a simple Radial Menu that I set up with some Painter commands. I invoked it over a painting so you can see how it looks in a working environment:
http://homepage.mac.com/pixlart/.Public/Images/p11_radial.jpg (http://www.pixlart.com)
Overall, I think the Intuos4 is a significant evolutionary step for Wacom. The configurable OLED labels point the way to future products. The enhanced pen sensitivity is very obvious—at least in Painter.
Intuos3 owners will want to consider their investment in additional pens, the older pens are not compatible with the Intuos4.

April 1st, 2009, 03:43 PM
Ok I'll post this on the Painter Sketchpad thread but I think because it's related to the software bundles for Intuos 4 I need to post this here too. This is really true since there are a number of people who may have used the trial version of Sketchpad (I had already informed wacom of the potential problem since their users will probably be upset if they can't install Sketchpad Properly):
Corel had released a different kind of installer for the intuos4 than the one found on their website. In addition, the original install utility on Corel's site for Sketchpad is broken. I had a copy from before and asked it to uninstall their product, but it doesn't completely uninstall. In fact it only removes itself from the Control Panel Remove Software in XP. It still leaves a shortcut and broken exe after uninstalling.
So, what I can suggest to your customers getting an intuos4 and wanting to use Sketchpad is that they need to know if they have a previous install of Sketchpad, do not use the one they can download from Wacom. They will still need to request a serial, they need to use the full install version from Corel's site. This is even if they removed the program previously. There's still something there that's conflicting with the intuos4 install package for Sketchpad, so they need the Corel Sketchpad Installer from their (Corel's) website.
Ok, I had to call the customer support line for product activation. Here is the thing. Try using your serial number and let it activate through an internet connection. If this does not work you'll need to contact Corel and let them know about the situation and may have to generate a new serial number to try product activation. Close the program and restart it, if it says Activate Now it should be able to work with your serial - otherwise...yeah you gotta call or contact Corel for a new serial. I hope this information helps any of us that had this nightmare.
I finally got it working though now that there's a CPU bug, I don't know if I'll be using it too much. Do note that I'll see how it responds with an intuos4 and I'll let you know how it fares if you're still interested.

Thanks for the correction. I realize now I was remembering the Artpad II/Ultrapad models that preceded the Intuos line.
There was quite an uproar at the introduction of the Intuos. We had just implemented Tilt And Bearing in Painter and users felt like it was unfair that they had to upgrade to gain the Tilt & Bearing functionality.

No problem, glad to see that Painter takes use of Intuos 4 new pressure reading, Painter already did it with the most advance pressure scaling options in any program using Brush Tracking but this way it should improve some issues I was still having mainly the initial pressure of a brush stroke.

I know I'm gonna come off rude but why do people keep making this assumption that they'd be backwards or forwards compatible? This has never been the case with ever with every intuos I owned (which is every version). If it was, I'm sure Wacom would tout this as a feature.

My Intuos4 is great! The extra size is worth it! Especially for gesture-ish drawings or just accurate line work in general. I would highly recommend to save the money to get the extra space if you can...
The nibs do seem to wear down quicker from what others have mentioned (which might be why they gave us a boatload more nibs). I have Japanese defaulted as my primary language in my English Windows and when you install the drivers, even though the control panel is still in English, the OLEDs show up in Japanese! This is useful if your language is not primarily English but you still use an English operating system. The labels can be customized in your language as well if you use IME.

There's really not much else to say other than what's been said in the reviews. The software support for the pen pressure seems to be limited to only a few applications. I think I notice a difference between CS2 and CS4, but I'm not entirely sure... hopefully they'll update CS2 to accept it, because CS4 is extremely buggy on my machine. I would switch and get the new one if they fixed it... but I'm really hesistant.
The pen now also requires you push a lot harder to get full opacity (and I have a relatively heavy hand, so this is significant). It can be adjusted in Control Panel obviously. It feels tons more natural than the Intuos3, and the new pen technology gives you much more control over your line work and shading, it actually feels like a completely different tool altogether. It doesn't feel much like the Intuos3 to me, actually.
The applications I downloaded were Painter Sketchpad and Autodesk. Sketchpad works great and I love how it bases the marks on the direction of your pen and tilt, allowing you to vary line weight and marks. The selection of mediums is kinda 'meh' and limited, but I like how you can "build" a digital sketchbook and do quick work with it. Autodesk doesn't work for me unfortunately, when I try to draw in the canvas, it goes a certain amount of distance away from my pen and doesn't draw where I actually want it to. So I have to look up how to fix that before I can actually use it...
My only gripe is now that I have to use the tablet on my desk in front of me (due to it's size). It's kinda hard to use the Wacom mouse now :/... might need to buy a new mouse if I'm going to keep it in front of me, or just move it back to my right.

For those experiencing Nib wear for the new intuos4.
The plastic white nibs work just fine.
The stroke nibs that come with the intuos3/4 are a bit more durable and also work fine. Those are the nibs with the spring.
You can buy more black nibs through Wacom's site for the bamboo http://direct.wacom.com/stores/5/Bamboo_C89.cfm they're the same thing.

I had this problem too. I fixed it by running the Wacom tablet preference utility and deleting my preferences (I hadn't really done much tweaking of these anyway, so it was no real loss). Seems like a nice little fast program for emulating pencil sketching.

Love the buttons on one side, I always used them on one side on Intuos 3, the touch ring is more sensitive than a stripe was, it's thin and lightweight, the black color attracts dust and fingerprints like crazy, the nibs wear out almost like real pencil, which is probably feels natural but not practical, I'm yet to try the nib with white point, it looks more durable. I'm not sure if I felt the 2024 difference, but it's good to know it's there. Small came with 2 usb cables?!

Just FYI. i just moved to HK a few months ago and i was able to get Intuos4 here last week. I guess you should have it in South Asia soon.
Got one Medium (for travel) and one Large (for home use). Also tried out the XL (12X19) for a few hours and finally returned it (for the large one)
i tried the 12X19 with my 24' screen. i'd say i really appreciate the fact that i can draw 1:1. The lines are a lot steadier. just it's way toooooo large for me so i return it for a Large (8X13). It is a good size for me and still provides much steadier lines than the Medium on 24' screen. The M is really too small for painting on a 24' screen IMO. Honestly, the difference, especially for lineworks, is quite noticeable. Yes, even between the L and XL, I can feel the difference. The bigger, the more you feel like you're working on real paper.
i really love the 1:1 feeling now that i've tasted it, but the bulkiness bothers me. I found my own solution, I'm now using two pens -- One mapped to 1280X800 and the other mapped to Full Screen (1920x1080). The tablet itself is mapped to Full Screen. So the 1st pen gives me 1:1 scale within the 1280X800. I'm using this pen to do sketches/draft exclusively -- that's why i need my line to be steady. And i use the other pen for coloring. I draw small so this works for me.
i did not know that you can assign different mapping to pens instead of the tablet. (maybe im the only one who did not know ^^;;) I'm thrilled when i found out. finally happy!

The pressure sensitivity is there, but only certain programs utilize it. I'm using a felt nib, myself ^^ A lot of people seem to like the spring one and the flex nib (the one with the white point) is new.

You wouldn't regret your purchase, trust me. The feel overall is more natural and the pen is just that much different. The pressure sensitivity is useful, no doubt, but I think the sensitivity overall of the pen is improved. Everything is laid out really well, the buttons and the surface texture is better... it's just a whole new tablet I think.

john_d,
the nibs are soft and the surface is slightly more rough, it feels like rubbing the pencil against paper, I'm not sure if I like that, I miss the gliding smooth Intuos3 action for working with paint, but hey, I worked 8 hours on that and I already got used. I hope Wacom releases hard nibs as option.

I've heard of people mapping the touch circle to rotate canvas (which is great obviously) but I'm wondering how this is achieved since canvas rotation in most programs is done by dragging the canvas with the mouse.

Important question.
I've heard of people mapping the touch circle to rotate canvas (which is great obviously) but I'm wondering how this is achieved since canvas rotation in most programs is done by dragging the canvas with the mouse.
Since a lot of programs use one hot key I've seen setups like the following
Painter: 1st button - e 2nd button - b
The e key activates the rotate tool, drag with your stylus, when you are where you want, use the B key to go back to brush.
Easy Paint Tool Sai: 1st button- DELETE 2nd button - INSERT
Delete will continue to rotate the canvas, Insert brings it back to home.
Open Canvas only uses Alt, so you can just use that as an express key
Other Common Touch Ring functions - Undo/Redo
Brush Size - Most apps use the [ and ] brackets
Art Rage - Also allows an Opacity increase by 1% by using the Up and Down Arrows.
The 1% brush size in Art Rage uses the Right and Left Arrows.
Most apps use Ctrl+z and Ctrl+y where as Photoshop its Shift+ctrl+z and alt+ctrl+z
Duo Switch:
I usually use the CTRL+ALT modifier on the back switch of the duo switch for on the fly brush sizing. However, while Sai has this shortcut the way it receives the input makes it harder for this shortcut to work. I tried adding ctrl+alt+1 to get some kind of response but it's hit and miss.
This works well in Painter and Open Canvas
Front switch is usually my Eyedrop tool.
It's Shift in Open Canvas, and most others use Alt.
Radial Menus are good for not as frequent but often used Shortcuts, like Layer adjustments, Brush tracking and I suppose Web and email.
Freeing up the express keys I used to use for Undo/Redo and Brush size in most apps, lets me now use the H key (I reprogrammed this in Painter) but it's the Horizontal Flip. This works really well in Sai.
Dual Monitors:
Keep that "Display Toggle" Express Key. It's very handy to jump quickly between screens.
Precision Mode: Still testing this out. It's a hit/miss situation. In Open Canvas the cursor alignment when using it is WAY off.
Anyways, I hope those shortcut ideas may help someone.

Cheering !!!! YEAH!!! Now can upgrad from my 18X12 Intuos 2 to a nice nw XL model Intuos 4
maybe in a few month as the the new contract i just sign pays me again in June July but i hoping for a few more jobs by then and i have some new art jewelry working on to sell as well as i still want that one Cintiq 12wx as well but i have a laptop to get back running so that will cut in to funds
Gurr tow need tables oh well better write off for next year taxes
My old Intuos2 12X18 has seen better days as the outer shell isn't holding up that well(I carry it around in art case )but it draws great I need new cover for the drawing area but Wacom seem to never have gotten any in and its not easy find them ..
the old tablet get to stay home and the new ones go out for demos and public drawing showing off my work and just being a show off ..
(Drawing with 12X18 Wacom make people stop and loom when at a Borders aor Malss or even a Denny;s at 2AM lol)
the new tablet look very nice ..Sexy even and yes i like a LARGE drawing area i mean did you real stand in front of 4X6 piece of paper to draw in class or did you have a full 18X 24 or better?
i would start my College year with spend money a full case of drawing tablets news print rolls from the News paper printing room and 14 case of paint and drawing ink(re-sold some of what didn't use to other students and the discount was good for buying in bulk) If I have had my tablet 10 year earlier I would so much better at this and i would not have had to fallen back on using my computer tech skills to make a living even if is paying much better right now ..
I am off to plan my buying for the year ..and guess hat just show the opening video from the wacom site to my wife she said how much and when do you want to get it..SHE DIDN'T SAY NO!! I AM SO BLESSED!!! MY WIFE LOVE ME AND LOVES MY WORK!!! YEAH!!! she said i need my tools to do my work and this is good thing to get ...wow
Ok Nuff drooling post pics all your new XL tablets !!

Ha ha. Yeah. I bought it knowing that it'd outlast my desk by quite a bit. I have it on a pull out drawer that puts it at a good hight. Any higher and I'd probably want to stand up to draw on it or just hold it in my lap. It's a lot of tablet.
I absolutely love the function keys this time around. On the intuos3, I used them but since there were only three, that hardly made the keyboard redundant. The touch strip on the I3 didn't quite do it for me either as I was always accidentally brushing up against it. With the Intuos4, I think they thought of everything. That pop-up radial menu was quite an ingenious inclusion. I can map even more commands and functions with that and even cycle through iTunes with it. The touch circle is great too. It's a bit sunken to reduce the chances of accidentally engaging it. Also, being able to assign four different functions to it and toggle between them is nice touch. I have mine set to zoom in/out, increase/decrease brush size, etc. Everything is quite customizable and it all becomes second nature very fast.
...Also. Yeah. that's a 20 inch tall alien on my desk.

Yup. I noticed it to. It doesn't quite add up to a millimeter on each edge so it's not a big deal for me. Your estimate about the nib is about right too. I've already had to replace one of the black nylon ones.
Anyone know if I can eventually fall back to my leftover Intuos3 white nylon nibs? They look just a tad thicker so I obviously don't want to be jamming anything in the pen that isn't supposed to go in there. I still have the stroke nib from my old pen too.

They'll fit in there about fine. I just get a bit of the "tailtip" that I was getting and complaining about in the past intuos when inking. Depending on the program though it's less noticeable. I'm using one of my old ones now until I can get more nibs because I'm like that with new product ...you want it close to how you bought it.

Actually, you have to hold it. What it does is effectively shrink your input by about half on the screen meaning that your actual physical strokes applied to the tablet are registering finer and smaller when the key is held. It's good for detail work and inking.

I just got my Intuos4 Medium at BestBuy last night!! woohoo. I'm a complete noob but I have a great wife who I talked into letting me spend the $350 to get it! I don't have a scanner or a good digital camera, so i'm looking forward to being able to share some art with all the AWESOME artist's on this site!

maybe this has already been suggested, i'm not sure. i think the title of this thread should be changed away from "today" ... the intuous four was released at a finite point on the timeline. it's a little nitpicky, sure... but definitely it shouldn't be blatantly innacurrate.
or maybe "whack-em" is releasing a new intuous IV every day? :D i damn sure love my intuous III :) go wacom!

And about the scratches, it seems a bit of cleaning will eliminate most if not all of them. So its all good.

I also noticed a few scratches. Dont know where they come from, but I guess they are from the pen. Some disapper when I clean the tablett with a soft cloth, but some stay. Its a bit annonying if that happens after two weeks of usage. Imagine how the tablett will look after 6 month?
I've read about a transparent layer which protects the Intuos3 and which is replaceable. Anybody knows if theres something for Intuos4?

The only time I ever had a problem with scratches on a tablet were when I used the mouse that came packaged with it.

The demo tablet in that store I abuse to try out wacom stuff is already all badly scratched. I looks like it's finished.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case because I doubt the store employees bother to change nibs. So if the nib wear is high along with regular customer abuse, kids coming around playing with crap, that the nib is a sharp point scratching the heck out of the tablet.

Does anyone know if you can map applescripts or Photoshop actions or similar to the radial marking menu?
The marking menu seems to me to be the real show-stopper with this rig. If you could program scripts & key-chords etc. you'd never need the keyboard.
Cheers.
