I'm not sure if I'm putting everything in the right place. I put a new thread in the "finals" thread and I'm placing one here for discussion.
[edit: davi]
their subject was 'Blood Pirate'

both of these are great!
john: the shades youve used are amazing, great mood and a very classic looking bloodthirsty pirate! i dig the bodies hangin in the background, very nice touch
Justin: bagpipes!!! yes! lol
i can see him walking with his bagpipe pegleg making a ruckus the whole time. i love the details of his belt and weapons and his overall design is great! and is that a pepsi symbol on his arm?? lol
awsome guys, youve set the bar for this competition!!

Nice symbol on the arm justin, with that mug he could probably pass for a member of the band.

Man, that's a hard decision to make! These are both awesome, I think I would have to vote for John as far as illustration design and I would vote for Justin as far as character design. That's still a hard choice. Nice "paint" quality on both.

Both pieces are very cool, especially considering how fast they were done. I'm wondering what you used for reference? (If you don't mind my asking)
Thanks,

Awww, damnit. Incredible work, guys. Makes me want to change my topic from pirates to something else. There's nothing like being royally overshadowed by pro's. Keep up the good work.

Im not sure if crits are allowed in these threads, but on Mueller's amazing piece, it seems the hand on the left, holding the cane, is rather short.
Justin Sweet- it seems that on the right shoulder (his left)
there is a sword in a sheath? But I dont see any more of it after it meets the shoulder...it must be a really short sword. :p Other than that and the fact that it has no eyes, its amazing.
Great stuff guys, the use of color is amazing.

I love these.
I gotta say, i like the way John Mueller used purple shadows, although it does rob the image of some contrast, which would have been nice to have considering the sheer amount of evil attitude the pirate has. High contrast=drama, drama=pirates, and i went full circle. :)
Also, yes, i think that arm really looks... not as perfect as the rest.
Justin Sweets sweet piece (sorry i had to) seems to be the more inventive of the two, setting a mood that i don't usually associate with pirates that much, yet which is absolutely fitting. It also made me think of Zorro from One Piece, but that's only because i'm a nerd and i have no life.
Wow, so much criticism, so little talent... i should be working for a local newspaper.
edit: looking at it again, i think the arm looks short because of the way the clothes obscure the pirate's figure. So the anatomy is not wrong, which would not have occured in a professional piece anyway, but i didn't look at it right. Obviously :D

What does the hebrew word ("shield?") have to do with the pirate?
