There's an energy to some of your sketches that I really like. It would be cool to see some more dynamic poses like the dancing guy with braces in your last post.

nice sketchbook, but e.g. to the alien warrior girl you should add some details in the point of interest (i think her head in this piece) because that shows the viewer where to look at!!

Wow you've been busy since I last checked out your sketchbook - good work! The dynamic poses are showing some definite potential, I like that you've not shied away from difficult poses. The archer is my favourite - I think you've nailed some of the muscle masses much more. Watch that the torso doesn't get too cramped though :)
It would be great to see some of the energy from these sketches in your standing poses. Something I always have to remind myself is that standing doesn't neccessarily mean static. For instance it would have been cool if your warrior girl was in a proper battle stance - feet spread, knees bent, etc. Sometimes it helps me to imagine a little scene for the characters to be 'acting' in.
Great to see so much more new work though - thanks for dropping by my sketchbook too! :)

Nice work you have here, certainly better than I was at 16. Keep up with the studies. You might want to focus on practicing eyes because I've notice alot of your paintings they seem off, a bit misshaped, or dead.
Otherwise keep it up, you're on the right track.

YOU: Sure dude! WHAT SHALL WE NAME IT!?!?! Btw show me how to do the link word thing, i mean i cant find out how to make it so that my whole link fits into a URL Word thing yeah.. -.-
PS i like the buildings! keep it up!
Um, by what i think your saying with the URL are you asking how to put your Sketchbook URL under a different name? Like mine? If i remember correctly you simply copy your sketchbook URL than highlight a name you set up in your edit sig page and that set it up as a link.
i dont know if that helped, but if not i can go back to my sig and do it again and have a clearer sig.
As for a group i thought about having some sort of a sad/animal name.

Hey man, do you ever do the flip trick if you're using photoshop or painter? Just flip the canvas every one in awhile and take a look at what you see. Make sure thing line up and you can see alot more of your mistakes this way.
The Joan of arc looks pretty cool but could use a bit of straightening since she seems to be tilted to the left/
Seriously you're doing great keep it up!

Cool stuff man. You got a good idea of values, but try to use it more. Define clearly where the light source comes from, what shadows it'll cast, etc. And keep in mind to stay simple !
Mat Kaminski
May 19th, 2009, 08:45 AM
Man, I would get lost in all those limbs myself... so it's amazing that you can do them so fluidly. :D
I'd watch proportions on your newest, but other than that, your life studies are very nice! :)
Seithe
May 19th, 2009, 11:49 AM
Your life studies look great. You've already improved loads since your first post. It looks like you got started where many people do (anime) and decided to start taking it seriously. You're on the right track. I'm a big fan of those multi-pose studies. I've been meaning to try some of those myself.
When you're doing from-life paintings, try your hardest to not exclude the face. I know it feels tedious to paint the facial features after having done the rest of the body, but if you neglect doing so, it will only become a weakness. It's a pretty common thing that people do, so, I'm just giving you fair warning :)
And, I tell several people this, push your values further. Stark contrast is your friend, and you cannot read form when it isn't there proving highlight against shadow. Once you learn how to do this, you'll be more efficient with your strokes. Also, don't get caught up in using smaller brushes too soon. Make sure you've properly blocked in/roughed out your general form with a harder brush before going in and making smaller details.
That's all I've got to say right now. You're doing great and have gotten a much earlier start than most. It looks like you've gotten a really good feel for dynamic poses from imagination. Keep the good stuff coming.

LoL, I know the feeling of feeling helpless for sure.
Okay, things you can try for lighting:
1) Firstly, try doing some studies of simple things and realize how shadow and light play off of the planes that make up the object. For example, try placing an egg on your desk (it doesn't matter what you use to hold it up). Now, take a look at how the natural light hits it. When you look closely, you will notice that light hits it from angles and then creates almost solid lines of shadow in places. These are called core shadows. They are useful in getting lighting down. Once you start realizing that many things have core shadows, it makes learning lighting a little easier.
www.characterdesigns.com (nudity, I don't know if you can look at this or not) has a great photoset all about core shadow. Take a look at that and try doing a couple of studies.
2) I'd suggest to stay away from color for a bit yet. Learn to block in your colors in grayscale. It doesn't matter the medium (digital, pencisl, charcoal, chalk, dirt, whatever), just as long as you enter into the realization that without being able to read your forms in black and white, you will never be able to show the dramaticism of lighting.
and finally, 3) Don't be hard on yourself, these things take time. There's no use in rushing. Just use your time wisely. If you feel as though you haven't drawn enough for that day, then draw more, but don't force it. Sometimes you need to take a step back and just absorb what you've learned. I've come to realize that when you take that break, chances are that you'll come back better than previously.
Just a little bit of advice, I hope it helps...
Honestly, I've been in your boat before. The pressure of wanting to become good before school starts and things. It sucks, but ultimately, the main thing you have to keep your eyes on is your goals. Even if you feel as though you aren't doing good, nine-times-out-of-ten, you're doing much better than you give yourself credit for.
I'd suggest to just keep on the path you're headed. I think in time everything will fall into place.
Anyway, enough early morning rambling LOL!
Keep drawing, and have fun.

hehe nice algen sketches... keep it up seeing progress..
a tip into getting into the art center...
start with sillouettes then work up to a character
then do a finished character
knowing photoshop is a necessity nowadays
do around 3-4 characters
same process for vehicles..
and environments
show that you can create a conceptual world pretty much..
around 30-40 pages is good..

Vehicles in the second last image look nice. Finish at least one of them. You know you want to. Marker portraits look pretty solid, too, for the most part. Studies look nice, too, but the legs maybe look a little long? I suppose they could just be long-legged fellas and uhh, felitas? I don't know the female version of fellas. Hurm. Regardless, I'm getting sick of how awesome you're getting. You update like, every day. And every day, you improve to a degree that makes me feel like someone's hammering my manbits. In a bad way.

d-woo : yes i will start working hard on environments.. but characters are so much more fun to me! :(
Haha, I understand, I love my characters, but I never spend any time with working on the enviroment where they're going to live in... :/

Daaaayyyyaaammmm, you improved so much this summer. Your coloring skillz has gotten so much better, and your anatomy got better too. Grr, my envious emotions are growing stronger...
Haha, yeah, I have easy classes too this year, no math for me this year (w00t) but I am concerned about taking art history. I've heard scary stories from that class.

You're showing really good works in your last post. I especially like the bird faces sketch, and the last one, because of the composition and colour palette. It would be nice to see a bigger version of it.
You've got a quite good anatomy. Right now, you should work on your poses; they look a bit unnatural and stiff. Do some researches on the rythm and movement lines of poses: Prometheus' PSG tutorial talks about it.
And keep up the work! it looks really good.
Cheers!

Holy hell! Freaking amazing landscapes (and everything else). Really phenomenal work here, kinda scary to imagine what you'll be doing by the time you graduate.
My only suggestion is to watch out a bit on the life drawings--for the most part the forms are reading pretty well, but a few areas are getting a bit confusing, they also have some pretty wacky proportions on a couple of them.
You gotta post here more often!
