View Full Version : Weird Colour transitions on Cintiq

Just wondering if anyone out there can help -

I bought a Cintiq in February (21UX Model DTZ-2100T) and I've been noticing an issue with colour transitions, especially when painting in photoshop.

Basically what I get is this strange fresco kind of look whenever I paint (with a paint brush or say the burn tool) on top. It's a lot more noticable when I use darker colours. Kind of like what you see on a topographic map. I don't know if you'll see it on your monitor but I took a screenshot which is essentially what I see when I paint. (Really annoying.)

I use a cintiq at work (an older model I believe) and it doesn't have this problem. I've tried switching to a new driver. I've tried calibrating the monitor. I tried painting in Painter (I get weird horizontal artifact lines.)

Has anyone encountered this issue and know a solution? Or does this sound like something I'll have to talk to the supplier about?

Help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This may be obvious, but do you have the Cintiq set to 24 or 32 bit color? If it's set lower you could have problems.

Yeah, sounds like color depth problem.

the problem is part of the design of the monitor, it will never go away on the current tablets.

the contrast ratio of the my 20ux is 800 :1
while the contrast ratio of my samsung is 3000 : 1
really low end monitors have around 1000 : 1

so waht the fug does this mean?
here's my current understanding of it....based on observations / tinkering etc. (someone correct me if this is totally wrong :)
its all about the value scale, not so much the relative top and bottom (black / white)... but the number of steps from bottom to top
imagine you have a flight of stairs that is 50 feet tall..your regular monitor gives you 100 stairs, pretty average 6 inch stairs there...

now imagine the same flight of stairs but now theres only 30 stairs, here you're climbing up stairs that are a over 3 feet each !!! (cintiq)

so what I've resorted to is doing more drawing and linework while looking at the cintiq, and once I'm rendering , I barely look at it unless I'm doing a difficult line or something...

soooooooooo.... if anyone from wacom reads this, please please please please partner up with a company that makes monitors cough*samsung*cough*......

I would gladly cough up the cash for another cintiq that was made in partnership with a company that knows how to make displays.

Thanks HEAPS guys. I better post a thanks before I forget.

Problem solved. And yes, it was really silly. I'm not so good with technical stuff, you can tell. ;) (But you don't know how stressed I was! The thought of having to take it back to the manufacturer...)
