Today's topic is: Robot: Earth Moving robot that rolls(on whells or tracks)

[edit: sorry i edited the topic some.. it honestly didn't make much sense...basicly it's a construction robot...]

It's been awhile. It's a little on the Tonka side. I need practice drawing and observing real machines.

I was kinda stumped at first readin, but I put this together, Its a robot so I guess it fits in. The waist rotates for maximum shoveling ha. Let me know what ya think!

My first dsg entry...hopefully not the last.

Kinda pointless I guess because it just puts the dirt behind itself.....it's like a glorified tiller, lol, ah well.

This machine is used for clearing and maintaining dirt roads. It has the large scoop arm for pushing the road clean and level, along with two smaller graplers which can dig out rocks or logs. A storage compartment holds rock samples, and 360 degree motion/terrain sensor mounted on top aids the AI.
Mechs are a very very weak area for me, but I tried!

Heres mine for today. Just simple and kinda quick.

Some really great stuff on here.

It digs holes. Is there a sense of movement in it? What do you think?

Wasn´t in the mood to do painting like sketch.

Awalloffire: like the design, but the background is confusing.
It kind of wrecks the nice perspective you got going.
The right side needs to be pushed back, and the foreground needs to be less fuzzy.
The robot itself looks fine.
Hunger Artist: Sorry, I just can´t make any sense of it. Everything is just
floating around.
Snowball: The wheel could be a lot bigger. Nice idea.
NoUseFrAName: Aside from the designflaw nice sketch.
Velo: Dunno much about mechanics either.
It looks fine, I'm not sure how the treads would work though.
Like the practical clunky look of the design.

Hi , Im new around here , and im just getting back into drawing on a daily basis. hopefully my shedule will allow me to keep up with the daily assignments.

I know that the perspective is off in some places, and that it needs some work but i thought id post something rather than nothing.

done on cardstock paper , with pencil and ballpoint pen
C+C welcome :)

(EDIT): PS; I had done this prior to the assignment change
(EDIT2): fixed the link - i think ...

Paper slayer, Oh the treads... I guess it does need some explaination, I tried to devise wheels which made sense for the machine. Since this machine is made to go into areas which have been deforested but not cleared of junk, the treads have to be able to go over rocks and logs. So my idea was a bunch of sliding plates with a roller belt. The belt propels forward movement and runs around the plates, it's made of durable material which has some stretch and is more flexible than a car tire (maybe woven/linked heavy rubber)... The plates can move up and down so that the balance of the machine is basically unchanged and the lever can remain level. The belt is flexible enough to change with the plates. The wheel is the sketch is bulging upward the way it would when rolling over a rock.

just a quickie, about 35 mins.

paperslayer : as far as i can see, hungerartist's sketch is a great big mech rolling along on one wheel with grab things for arms. s wicked!

all ze best, engländers.

Shit! I began drawing and totaly forgot about the wheels :(
Damn I worked kinda hard on this one

Ah well, maybe the thrusters can turn and become wheels, if my SandSucker doesn't have to fly. btw I hate my crappy scanner my pics always looks better on paper. Done in markers

am I the only person who took the topic literally?

vijil - impressive size and velocity. How brave this tiny person right-below!!!!
Snowball - not much of a robot. If thought of a ballerina the pose could be more elegant?

Seeing all those giant robots so perfectly drawn, I tried to design something completely different.

At first I thought of moving Earth (our planet) in stead off earth (sand). Imagine a real axis from North- to Southpole. An immense grounded cilinder around this axis (SP-side). And machinery (with weels!) to rotate this cilinder (and Earth) around the axis. But this was to complex for me to draw. WHO DARES? Besides ... would it be a robot?

SORRY: THIS IMAGE IS NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL 1-1-04 (datatraffic of my homepage reached the montly maximum)

In stead a 20 min quicky at the other end of dimensions: an AntBot, just capable to move one grain of earth a time. So tiny that you must use a magnifying-glass to see this creature at work.

Mad, mad earth moving props to those of us who actually post everyday. The results are so evident in the way that you make marks, handle color, and kick out the jams mf.

thank ye-I'm inspired by yr devotion.

I did not relate to this topic at all, so I let my tablet do whatever it wanted, so....

From the angry, post-apocolyptic, hollowed-out corpse of a world we call Earth, there is one robot with the steel bearings necessary to move dirt where even angels fear to tread!

Make way for.......MOOVARR!

I had so many cheasy and cornballish ideas for this one, (Including a robot that ate dirt and later pooped it out in nice little bundles, kind of like hay bailers), but in the end I opted for a quick somewhat practical idea.

Ahhhh... sigh... A quick monochrome scribble from me today, pretty tired.

Four armed, four tracked earth killin machine! I call him steve.

My first post here, and it's just two quick sketches of Earth moving robots. Made me smile to do them though. I hope to keep up with the dsg at minimum, we'll see how it goes.

Well, to be honest Steve doesn't move much. He is only a prototype and as a prototype he is a bit lethargic. I told him he wouldn't get any WD-40 if he wouldn't chew up the earth, but does he listen? Noooo....

Ok someone slap me...

Wystro - I like the "post-apocolyptic" athmosphere you brought into this image. It looks as if the camera is over-exposed by the lights of this "MOOVARR".

Idiot Apathy - I think your "steve" will suffer from apathy too, with a track on each side. The only moves he can make are rotations around his own axis.

Retrosolid - Very nice !! Where are the weels? Roller skates out of sight?

phantomhead - This 's a sweet little thing. So neat, it 'll not accept to get mud at his shovel.

Avalos - Beautifull lights and shadows. Inspired by Rembrandt?

UnderwearNinja - Welcome to the club! (I'm still a "pupil" myself). We had the same idea in moving our planet. But the wheels are rather redundant in this action.

Here's a little sketch I did...
It just sorta scoops up the earth and packs it away via conveyor system.

http://homepage.mac.com/forumdump/.Pictures/EarthMover%20Sketch.jpg

...And a different vehicle that's much more finished...
Although I didn't really show it too well, I sorta decided that this has got two independent shovel-arms that can scoop right back into it's carriage, Trash Truck style.

That looks really cool William, did you use any kind of ref or did you just make it all up? Nice lighting on that second one.

Thanks, RockHead!

No use of reference for these...
There're plenty of times when I would benefit from referencing photographs or other artists' paintings, and I hope to start doing that soon.

The only reference I can remember using for the DSG is the tomato I used to make my vegetable guy :P .
