That's really cool! Very nice colors. Looks good to me! The only thing I can comment on is that the screen left (his right) leg gets a little lost in the background.

Hi Blackarts,

I always look forward when I see your name in the posters column.

This one is one of your stronger pices, the character has much more dynamism than the space mutant you did some time ago.
you could add the body of the dead guy, that would allow you to tell more of a story.

I find it a bit strange that both the orc(or whatever he is) and the dead human have the same hair lenght, colour, style and so on..it looks like they are both wearing a wig. this is nitpicking at its worst.

the orc's outfit and weapon are cool.:chug:

You have so many highlights all over the place my eye doesn't know where to look.

Other than some confusion on where to look it is a damn fine piece, bravo.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, those are some good points.

form_n_focus; It's supposed to be some sort of ghoul thing I suppose, it started a s a black and white sketch of an undead warrior, which I'll post up for comparison. It was just a personal work, but I think it will be one of my entries into the next expose book.

dann; i have to work on that, I do have a tendency to over-render things.

R_M; I actually had the body on the ground in an earlier version, but I took it out because it all felt too crowded....in retorspect maybe I should have left it in. Ah well. Interesting point about the hair, maybe I'll revisit this! thanks.

alkaline111; I dig samwise art myself and am a huge warcraft fan...I love the sense of volume he gets with his figures.

Rusty Red Robot; your right, things get a bit muddy there - I'll try to come up with something better.

thanks peeps, keep 'em coming.

Is this a "tribute to Spinal Tap" painting?
If so, you need to work on it a bit more. The "stone" should only be 12 inches high, and I don't know what the zombie part is about.
Never the less, that definately is the head of Derek Smalls. (I can tell by the Moustach/beard)

Maybe next time!

My first words on seeing this were "Oh dammit Black" muttered in a truly green tone of voice.

Good stuff!

After perring for a few moments I felt the severed noggin looked a bit unfinshed, more blurry than the rest of the image. Was this intentional as part of the shimmering heat coming from the ground?

Love the column, and love the subtle texture of the rocks towards the bottom of the piece.

Mr. Undead has a good sense of motion, he looks about ready to shamble down the incline without looking off balance.

Perhaps darkening the right background (and using a cooler tone) would add depth and draw the center and left of the image forward.

Solid improvement man, keep working it!

awesome! you should post this in the Orcs thread in this section too! One thing that bothers me are the light strokes in the runes don't look confident.

ok I spent some time fixing a few thing and tightening it up. I think I'll call it finished. Check it out, and thanks for the feedback.

just a suggestion while im here -- the foreground texture you have on the rocks is also overlayed on the fire stuff which detracts a bit -- im being expose-perfectionistic tho

yep I this is one of mine I'll probably submit. I kind of like the texture, sort of ties things together and gives it more of a traditional feel I think...true enough about the changes though, I may tinker some more with it if I have time.

thanks

Like the newest version a lot more. Good job. The stone hedge is looking really good now. I also really like the way it flows together. It's got a really basic composition which I think is why it works so well. What about a piece of a stone hedge really close in the foreground or maybe a flame? To really add some depth.

I think with those flames so close to him that he'd have brighter warm highlights? The only green you'd see is in the shadows of his skin and grass. Also might pop out the picture if you used a slight cool background.

yeah I really like what you did there, change-wise. What if you made the orc-monster's eyes glow more, or just brighter so they stand out? That would make him even more menacing.:)

But I can really see this on the cover of Dragon magazine or the like. I like that Painter program--is it expensive? All I use is Photoshop, and it seems a little artificial looking compared to Painter, you know?

I think the brighter you make a monsters eyes glow the more cartoony it looks and it looses some of it's evilness...I usually go with the subtle is better approach when it comes to that. Painter is great, I highly reccomend it...I bought my copy about a year and a half ago, at the time it was retailing for about 700 C$. They are on version 8 now, but having tried both versions I still prefer 7.

Sketch; thanks, I'm happier with this one too...it helps to leave your work for a bit then come back to it - you see all the little mistakes you made a lot more clearly.

somehow i think the facial expressions should be switched around. but other than that its great work.
