ROUND #152 :: MARY of the BLUE LIGHTS
DESCRIPTION
MARY of the BLUE LIGHTS
No one is quite sure where Mary comes from, or how she manages to survive. Twelve years old, she lives on the city streets, despite many attempts to move her to a stable habitat. Somehow she manages to survive despite adversity, giving credit only to what she calls the 'blue lights'. Strange, glowing lights that she speaks to and that help take care of her. Only she can see them. Some people see her as crazy; maybe she is, or maybe she is in touch with forces that speak only directly to her.
------------
ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?
--------------------
SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);

Here's my interpretation of Mary.
cowboy surfer
March 20th, 2009, 06:54 AM
Mary lives in blissfull ignorance of the harsh realities of street life. For her it is one big game. Puddles to jump in when it rains, stray animals to befriend, lots of hiding places, and of course her best friend Blow (Blue Glow) has been her constant companion since the night when she was 3 and her parents were killed.
Everyone knows that Mary exists but none can follow her for long. Often the Police report seeing her near the scene when they have captured a criminal, there is even a rumour that Mary is a guardian of the city who leads the Police to "their man".

Mary Bluelights is back. The foster mother brought her in last shift, nearly hysterical, claiming that Mary had cut her own hair without using scissors or any other sharp instrument. It's a safe home, with a long and positive history of fostering autistic children, so there's no reason to doubt her, but to look at Mary, you'd think she'd been to boot camp. That lovely waist-length hair, just gone. Mrs. Franco said there wasn't even anything to clean up. She left with her rosary in hand, repeatedly crossing herself. Yet I know her to be a very level-headed and rational woman!
We're running out of foster home options -- they've all gotten to know our Mary, either by direct experience or the grapevine. Everyone agrees she's a lovely kid, never an overt behavioral problem, never aggressive, never acting out (at least not that anyone sees!), always participative, even occasionally buddying up with a lower-functioning patient during game sessions. But she's undeniably an odd case. I'd even go so far as to call her strange, given her treatment history here at St. Mary's... meds that have no effect, diagnostic instruments that don't work on her, even the damn MRI glitching whenever she's slated for a scan. It's almost as if she's hiding from us. I just hope we can keep her from hitting the streets again.
Someday I'll solve this lovely little mystery, and then maybe we'll understand her mantra, her prayer, her... whatever... the only worlds she's ever said, since she first showed up here nine years ago: "Blue lights pretty, blue lights. Pretty!"
__________________________________________________ _______________
I figure little Mary would have more than one encounter with the child welfare system . In my experience there'd be few pre-pubescent girls actually growing up on the streets "full-time," much more likely to be spending years in and out of institutional and foster care, acquiring a record with various social services agencies. So this is that side of Mary's life, the other side of the brief, perhaps. Most girls that age would likely prefer the safety and comfort of even an ersatz family. Is she compelled to street life by her pretty lights?

No fancy story (Masque... you and your darn writing skills! LOL!)... but I did come up with a bit of a backstory for my Mary.
Her mother was a "Fortune Teller", but had real "sight" which was a trait passed on to Mary. Mary's mother was murdered
for seeing the wrong person's future and Mary is left alone, with only the Blue Lights to care for her.

Here's mine. Reality no longer means anything to little Mary. She see's only that which she wishes to, or that which the blue spirits allow. She is their link to a corporeal form, and although they nourish her and protect her, they exact the enormous price of her sanity. She is no longer of our world...

My simple story......
My Mary is just a sad young girl who knows too much about our sad world........as the "blue lights....balls...or whatever" travel around the world really fast and always come back to tell Mary what it saw......
Maybe when she grows up she can learn how to deal with such onerous power.....and do something to help out the world......

here's my final. I definitly imagined the blue lights as some drug induced hallucination. It was also influenced by stories I've heard about hippies forcing drugs onto their kids. Poor mary here has been a drug user for years now, and even though she escaped her abusive parents, she hasn't stopped using drugs. She only gets to see her friends, the blue lights when she's high.

Little Mary never had any parents. She never went to school, and so never received any moral values. The only thing she knows are the streets. When she met the blue lights one rainy night, they swore to become her servants. Slaves to her every will, she ordered them to go steal money and jewelry...

Subject: Monitor List During Absence
Another one I forgot to mention. Should be the last one, though.
There have been some incidents where this girl has supposedly caused hysterics in some of the Dissenters detained over the past few years. They are clearly enamoured of this one and make some attempts to take special care of her, but she seems oblivious to that and nearly everything else. If you ask me, she's clearly just another obsessive compulsive gutter dog and couldn't possibly be a threat to the Coronated. But, since we must oblige the Duke's superstitions and she fits the Astrologer's description, I must ask you to keep tabs on this one as well.
She lives on the streets so there's no set location to monitor, but if you rough up some of the more superstitious and intoxicated locals (you know the ones I mean) they'll tell you exactly where to find her...

Mary is an Indian street girl who found the remains of a space traveller in the outskirts of the Hong Kong slum she lives. The beautiful blue glowing substance that oozed from the contraption in his hand became her livelihood: She would paint beautiful tattoos with it for the people in the neighborhood, for money or food. But the substance was alive, and started taking roots inside the people's bodies, drawing their energies back into the alien contraption and concentrating it on a single point, an Aleph, that would open a door into another dimension right on top of Mary's Crown Chakra. Or so they told me. It costs five bucks to come see the girl in this shady apartment complex, so I refused. What do they think I am, a sucker?

So... I'm not sure which is meant exactly by "PLEASE REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR COPYRIGHT INFORMATION UNDER THE IMAGE IN THE FINAL BURNING THREAD SO I DON'T HAVE TO HUNT YOU DOWN LATER!"

This week was quite hard, since we had over fifty entries I was required to cut people, but some really good entries ended up being cut for very small reasons.
I have a max of 3 spaces I can put into the poll left. Out of the following list, I can take three more if the issues they were cut for are fixed. Please note i reserve the right to again cut you for quality reasons, since I can only take three, and this is not a first-come-first-serve basis. I am only making this option open because i feel a few of you really deserve to get into the poll.

Critique time!
Sadly, I didn't get time to enter this one myself... had to spend my break working on another digital piece instead. It's very unfortunate... but perhaps I'll keep the prompt and work on it later.
There's a good variety of entries this week... but some of you lot really need to do more studying on how to draw kids and pre-teens. There's at least a couple entries in here that look waaaay too old to fit with the prompt.
DHTenshi There's something very surreal about this that appealed to me. Some of the anatomy is a little questionable I guess (especially the legs) but the pose and the lighting, and the eerie reflection of the glow in her eyes is very intriguing.
Nateshaw- I wanted to vote for this one, because it's a cool scene and I like the subtlety of the blue lights... but the girl looks like she's 30 instead of 12, and so I had to say no. :/
Tea_Drinker- Fantastic! I think this one is my favorite. I love the bright contrast between the orange lights and the glowy blue creatures, and the character design on Mary as well. Definitely a winner.
artina- Simple, but I really liked the personality you captured in your design of Mary.
entdroid- The bug-eys of the girl really kind of bother me, but everything else is cool. And while it wasn't quite enough to get my vote, I wanted to give a shout-out because I don't see a lot of very stylized stuff in CHOW, and I feel like that's a bit of a shame. So kudos to you, because cartoons and crazy stylization is awesome and mroe people should do it.
masque- There's a lot of emotion here, and I think the sharp black and white really works for this. The quiet despair in her eyes is just striking. I do wonder, though, if maybe a bit more dark shading in front of Mary might have helped for contrast?
DeKAL- In what way is this chick 12 years old? I mean, a prostitute sort of situation could be very tragic if it was a 12 year old, but this woman looks at least 25.
K-Mo- Simple, but effective. I like it. Good lighting and a good sense of sulky childhood from Mary.
Sorknes- Your character looks like a child, and that's good, but her pose and expression look a little stiff and posed. You might try working on that next time to get a little more spontaneity to the drawing.
Tommoy- I was planning on doing a similar theme for this (rainy streets reflecting the blue light), so maybe that's why it caught my eye. I quite like the pose and the ubiquitous cardboard hobo box, as well as the old-timey street lamp.
XTN- This one is my second favorite, I think. I really like the environment and the slightly more cheerful, mischeivous take on Mary, as well as the strange little blue light-people. The character is very believable as a 12 year old street kid but without the terrible despair of some of the other pieces. I like. :3
poshspice- Very creepy. Well done, although she also looks a touch older than 12, maybe closer to her late teens than pre-teen. Still, very nice.
Johann de Venicia- I didn't see yours in the poll and I have to say I'm disappointed. I really liked the post-apocalyptic take and the almost halo-like lights around her head. Definitely would have earned my vote.

FlameRaven, just have to add other than the thanks button - thank you so much for saying she looks like a child. :D I always struggle something fierce when it comes to depicting kids, hehe. :)
Else a heads up, I'm particularily pleased to see there's a lot of styles and ideas getting depicted in different ways but that still manages to actually get a design through. :) The bad part is the same as FlameRaven points out, some of these really doesn't look like 12 yrs old girls.... Yeah, some evolve early, but if you're living on the streets there's a pretty small chance you'll look late teens or mid 20s form wise....
I'll wait a lil with the voting, I want to see if there's any more people getting in. :)

Sorry for the late entry. Haven't had a chance to paint since Sunday morning. Hope you'll accept me!

Artist - Rushwolf
Concept - CHOW 152 Mary of The Blue Lights
Magic. There are many forms of energy from which it draws it power. A few rare beings can vividly sense these parallel planes where, in Mary's case, sentient constructs of ethereal mana live. Mary is soo attuned to this plane that the creatures of light are also aware of her. She's a bit aloof, not understanding that no one else can see these creatures.

Lot's of amazing entries, too bad a few great ones didn't make into the finals.
I voted for
Rambozo - This just grabbed my attention right off the bat. The pose and perspective are great. I love her attitude! The snot's maybe a bit over the top though.
TeaDrinker - The lights as Koi/dragons idea is really cool and her expression sold me, she looks so genuinely fascinated by them.
dwinbotp - Very cool. To me this picture captures the concept in a very effective yet simple way.
One's I almost voted for
Poshspice & DeKal - Both great paintings, but both look too old to be 12
Bara - I really likes this concept, it's very original and well executed, but Mary doesn't look like she lives on the streets
Shannanigan - Your pieces are always well thought out and polished, you have a cool style! I just find that your color schemes don't help the whole image gel, it might help to pick 2 or 3 main colors that work well together for most of the piece and a few others to accent. Though I'm a minimalist when it comes to color and that's just my opinion.
Everyone else, great job finishing. I wish I had time to comment on all of them.

For what it's worth, I would have voted for this. Today I voted for Johann de Vanencia and Rambozo, both are really excellent technically and I think the Madonna imagery in both really fits well.
I also voted for DIMAGYAN and Rodimus25
anyway
Dekal and Bara both these struck me as more "urban bourgeois" than homeless :\
Demo Go easy on the hard shadows dude
Lechri your anatomy is really wonky, it would be a good idea to work from a reference next time
Ostrander This doesn't really read very well, I'm not sure if she just shoplifted a roll, or if she's going to throw a rock through the bakery window. Also the text is too crisp and stands out a little too much.

Very nice art work everybody !! it was a real pleasure to look at.
Courtyard got my vote because it's different and I like the idea of the blue light.

Hahaha yeah I'm dumb. Win for the most reasons to be cut. Try again next time :)
This is a tough one to choose for because I like a lot of these..
Tea_Drinker - I love your fish lights. They're beautiful and ethereal but you still don't let them steal the show in the composition.
Rodimus- I think yours is my favorite. Love the stylization, the enviro and the lights.
There are so many more I like...good job everybody.

Flame Raven - she is on human growth hormone and eats lots of spinach. DUUHHHHHH.

I really liked this week's topic and I wanted to join so very badly, but didn't have the time. Anyhow, I see some really nice entries! Voted for Rodimus25 and entdroid for their great styles and successful execution, and xgabo for originality.
A few others that almost got my vote were dwinbotp, FAST ART and Tea Drinker. These were great too, but they didn't stand out as much.
My brain is failing now from lack of sleep. Sorry for the lack of constructive crits guys. Great round!

FlameRaven: Thank you very much! and I agree with you about the anatomy, I know I've got work a lot more on it, glad you liked everything else! and thanks for voting for me! :D, and for giving my a reason why you dide ;)
So I voted for:
Rambozo: Because it really looks great! But (this is more like a personal thought) I dunno, crazy way to see her. Great pose and angle, I think you made a great job on them specially, and her design looks wicked :D, dunno what else to say, sorry for not having a real good crit.
Tea_Drinkeer: Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude, yours is my favourite! I just love it, great lighty creatures btw, don't have crits, except maybe add more blue reflections on her, and on the sorroundings. So, again, great entry!
entdroid: Great cartoony style! I likes it :D
dwinbotp: I mentioned before that the angle was really good, and I really liked yours, so I voted for it :P
Rodimus25: Lovely style, that's the kind of cartoon I really enjoy, the little creatures you made look great! very original, and i like how they seem to disappear in the wind.
XTN: Great lighting, and the girl you made, looks like a real 12 year old one, I really like her design. As for crits, the lil' dudes don't seem shiny enough, or maybe because they said "Blue lights" I thought of shiny lights all the time, so... maybe it's more like a personal thought right?
DigitalShade: Great contrast! the girl pops out real nice, and your style seem pretty realistic, I like it, but where are the blue lights?
xgabo: amazing red lighting, I really like everything in it, she seems really mysterious, Congrats, it came out really good!
Johann de Venecia: Glad you sticked out with the first sketch, I likes it a lots :P, I love her design!
I got 7 votes! yay :D, I think it's ok for my 1st time in ChoW, but not the last, hope I get more votes next time =)
Nice round guys, nice entries to all of you, this were just my favourites

Wow--I feel really lucky to have made poll with all these lovely entries. Thank you so much, Pierropod...all I can see when I look at it are mistakes, so I'm really happy that the idea read for you. :)
This was a really tough round in terms of voting...I ended up going with:
Tea_Drinker--what a gorgeous image...it's an optimistic view of Mary, but not to the point of being distracting. I love the expression on her face and the mixture of orange and blue lights. Really rich, strong sense of atmosphere here, too.
Ostrander--I adore this image...when I read the text you included with it, you had me. I would love to see this fleshed out into an animation, as you've already made me invested in each one of these characters in a single frame.
Dwinbotp--you are consistently producing some of my favorite images in these competitions, and this week is no exception. Lovely perspective and limited palette. I love that you haven't dressed her in "homeless" attire--it emphasizes how invincible she is under the blue lights' protection, despite the harshest environment imaginable. Beautiful.
Johann de Venicia--The design of the dress alone is worth a vote. I love everything about this one--composition, incredibly strong character, simple, clear...and the way you've done the lights is inspired. Thanks for this image.
/*EDIT: DigitalShade--oops--I voted for you too! This one is so different from the others and really stood out to me. I love the tiny hint of a smile we can see on her face, and the subtlety of the blue candle in the corner. I want to know more about this mysterious girl...there was clearly a lot of thought put into her development. */
Well done, everyone, and many thanks to the organizers.

Alright so what did I do so wrong this time that I didn't even get to have my illustration in the polls? Was it too late, that bad? Some feedback would be great. I try and make way with the little time I have to participate whether last minute or not and to work diligently for free is one thing but for absolutely nothing........damn
Oh well better luck next time right? I would appreciate feedback on why my entree wasn't in the voting. Thanks Posh................

Shannanigan - Your pieces are always well thought out and polished, you have a cool style! Thanks for the compliments! Its true I am a color wh0re... probably won't be changing that anytime soon. LOL! I actually thought this was toned down color wise... except for Mary. And I'm not liking the pink pillow... that is throwing it off for me now I've looked at it a while.
As I sit around my room at work here I see a million colors... not just one 3 or 4. I know art color theory whatever says its best to limit, but its really not true to life. Of course neither are my drawings so what the hell am I talking about? Haha! ;)

Rambozo - dude, how many years has she been cultivating that bogey for? I liked the piece and would've def voted for you but I couldn't take it seriously after staring at that snot for a while.
Rushwolf - I love your piece, taking the fantasy universe approach definitely works better. I'm surprised that more people didn't go that way..
Poshspice - wooow. Beautiful. Def the prettiest in my opinion. I agree that her face looks a bit too old, but I didn't notice when I was deciding :)

So I am sitting in the dark like a jack ass and then the light turns on and I see SORKNES in the doorway =]
Sorknes: Thank you so much love for filling me in. I really thought I was going crazy or something. Got art buddies emailing me to be more attentive in life or what not. I'll get it together in time here, just got over bein sick and set back in my days with routine and haven't ripped a chow in forever. Alright so now to go and do some back tracking and see to it no more efforts are wasted to the hands of carelessness and being unattentive. Thanks again Sorknes =]

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!
WHEN POSTING TO THE FINAL THREAD
Remember to include your nickname in the file name.
Hopefully I won't slip on this again. And I was convinced that is was because I signed in blue ink or something............HA! No the truth is my artwork just outrageously sucks.........HA! Alright let me return back to reality and try and prepare something for Dr. Who, Why, and Where...................

Wow - so many...
I broke my arbitrary limit of 5 votes.
Voted Dwinbotp and Tea_Drinker for well-executed paintings...
Clochette for a very cool and funky drawing, plus best use of cockroaches...
XTN and NateShaw for (I think) best catching the feel of the brief...
and Johann de Venecia for well, I just like it on all levels.
I almost voted Entroid, but the eye bugging out of the side of Mary's face just kinda bugged me as well...
And I'd like to special mention Ostrander for a very creative and effective take on the brief.
What an amazing bunch of artwork all 'round!

Rambozo The reason is that I can't read the copyright info that you provide when you submit your image, and if you win, i have to re-upload it at least twice in various threads here in chow, so i like to get the copyright info right.
Daestwen, no worries I just wasn't sure if it was enough for me to attach the info to the images (didn't know how much access you had to the CA site etc.) I'll make sure and post the info in text in the finals from no on ! :)

IanLlanas : thanks man :) Ya you’re not the only one to mention the snot hehe I actually wanted it to be exaggerated, I was even contemplating having chunks of brain on there and maybe have it glow but I restrained my enthusiasm hehe
humboldt squid : Cheers ! I like your comment about the madonne actually. At first I wasn’t planning on having an aureole reference, but at some point it seemed like it would mix in nicely, play on the opposites a little more & emphasise the ludicrous/comical given my somewhat sombre inspiration (like Masque said “twistedly tragicomic” I guess ;) )
DHTenshi : No sweat over the crit, already pleased to get a good response hehe
Rob!T : Hey it’s all good. Like I mentioned up top I was sorta goin’ in that direction. Didn’t reckon a booger would get THAT much attention though hahaha
Dwinbotp : Dude !! You're the guy I've been fighting with for second place in the poll !! hehehe Alright, now I know who you are :) Good to see you on GA.
Great round !

I voted for many, for a variety of reasons, but Tea Drinker's is by far and above the best handling of the brief in my opinion. She looks exactly 12 -- I should know, I have a 12 year old daughter. Great expression, great lights, and great position -- up on the ledge, kind of lonely, he even manages to show the difficulty/loneliness of adolescence. Wonderful!
Entdroid, I feel I should mention that yours was awesome. But I couldn't vote for it because it's actually MORE realistic than usual and her eye sticking out of her head really bothered me. It is distracting and jarring because its more realistic in style than usual. I've never been bothered by the eyes before (you usually do this) but this time I couldn't even really look at it. Made me think of Total Recall ><
