Mad Giraffe
December 14th, 2003, 04:11 AM
That the hobbit has is own personaltiy, no hobbit like that..a bit type-casted. Mebb also that one type of characteristi promently shows..like...a happy hobbiy, playful, naggin, strongman, hulkish, stupid, daft, etc., etc.
Charactarize=
1.Desicribe the character of
2.Be a characteristic of
Hope this helps.;)

quick sketch, about 15 min. Going to colour this later hopefully. The depressed drunk hobbit, concerned about the last harvest's poor results:(

Edit**
Now I coloured it. I'm in a hurry so I managed to squeeze both sketch and colour within the hour. Well, hopefully it looks alright. Always hard to tell by yourself when rushing things :)

hmm...so i read somewhere the other day,
that elijah wood wasn't having much luck with
the ladies, despite being the main character
in one of the most successful movies ever.
on that note...;)

I am proud that I am posting at least one sketch a day so far! I just need lots of help with Anatomy and being able to visualise! But anywho, here is my Hobbit! I am trying to portray a hotbbit that has just finished his huge Sunday Dinner of mashed taters and the works! And finally dozes off in his kitchen chair! C&C welcome.

@phantom_head-looks nice:D.but they look a bit to tall to be hobbits mebbe..size up their heads a bit:p...ah well..one question...how do you make a 'brown'-sketch like yours?...because that's just really fitting this Tolkien theme:D
Thanks a lot:D!

@Mad...i sort of "cheated" with photoshop:D
the original was black ink and pencil, but that seemed too boring, so i added a beige layer under it, and adjusted the hue and saturation of the sketch -- no filters!! btw, i agree that their heads need to be larger...so here's the new version.http://img2.photobucket.com/albums/v11/Phantom_Head/DSG_290_1_copy.jpg

much better...
@plaf-like the satisfied expression on his face..dig your style..very typical
@phantom_head-it doesn't work that well...to bad..I still think tha heads are to small...hmm..always tought that hobbits are the half of a human(hence the name 'halflings')...the human proportion is about...7-8 heads...so I figured that hobbits are about...3-4 heads...am I right...or am I wrong?

Mook the loon, scares children and
travelers alike with bewildering
questions, threats and exlaimations.
He´s mostly harmless.
Had a few of false starts. It took me a
lot longer than I thought it would.
Gallon: I like the Idea, the coloring, and that it was quickly done (Something I need to work on :) )
It looks fine, the only thing I can spot is that the upper lip looks off.
Snowball: His feet looks a bit small for a hobbit. His right leg looks ok I think,
but his knee is missing, making it hard to tell. Like it though.
Phantom_head: Yep, the second one looks more hobbit-like.
Madgiraffe: Looks good, lot of character,
the sepia tone works well in the second one. I like it.

This lucky hobbit is in charge of keeping Gollum/Smeagol busy in the off season, you know when there is no great evil to fight. He is also a good friend of Wile E. Coyote.
Here you see the lil bugga about to fall for the "OoOoh its a ring... *pulls cord* OoOooh its a ring... but I'm trapped" trick.

Here's mine.
A hobbit scholar:
http://artgeek5000.com/sketch/dsg/290.jpg
Now that I think about it, he's a pretty typical hobbit, pipe in hand, chilling in an armchair by the fire; that whole bit. But look he's got lots of books on the mantle; hence: scholar...

lichtpartikel, I like your hidden hobbit. I thought for a moment that I saw some toe hair there, but I was mistaken :)
artgeek5000, definately a scholar - he's not at the pub! Good sketch.
talmir - The elves were seafaring (that's how they got to the Grey Havens, and incidently got to Middle Earth to begin with from Valinor) - I also think Gondor was as well. However, most of the events take place on the mainland. Mordor, being landlocked, couldn't attack from the sea. I think some of the southern races were seafaring, and the men of Lake Town used boats.
Your pirate has got to be a Took, because by and large, hobbits considered anyone that willingly went on the water pretty well daft :)
Good bout o' hobbits today! Bilbo would be proud.
Okay, I'll shutup now and quit wasting space:doh:

Well, I was going for the drunk, fat, happy hobbit, not very original I suppose but I had a hard time thinking of anything else characteristically hobbit-like. Just a PS sketch.

Oregano : ah, I see.. I was more thinking of some took branch that went away and joined mordor in theyr spreading of evil so that there'll be less people to fight over food. They are never mentioned because shire folk dont like to talk about bad things so they simply forgot the Bonetoe part of the hobbit family.

Ah, that side of the Tooks. That explains it. I knew it couldn't simply be the Took wonderlust :D

There's some good stuff on this thread.
Plaf, I totally dig your shop keeper! But, I just thought of something: if he's blind how could he read that watch on the chain in his pocket? :D
Oregano: Your hobbit maiden is very nice. Her face is turned out very well. I think her hairy feet would turn me off, but then again I'm not a hobbit! (BTW, i see you're in Orcas Island; very pretty area.)
bgermain: Speaking of hair, your Ho-bit's got it in spades. Funny pic!
Great hobbits all!

artgeek: true, true. i guess it's force of habit - if you've been wearing it all your life, you're not gonna stop kinda thing =)
i think hunger artist is the one who's captured the hobbit essence the most - maybe not in topic matter, but certainly in execution :) cool sketch dude.

eerrrm...plaf? I think that you mean bgrmain's pic....because it seems that there are no picsa here from Hunger_Artist...and he's only quoting the pic...and if you view back to previous sketches of Hunger_Artist...he has a totally different style...

and yeah, hungerartist doesn't usually do stuff in that style, no :)

Plaf, Artgeek, Mad Giraffe: Thanks for the kind words! I don't mind being mistaken for Hunger Artist; he does some good work.
As for subject matter...Well, I can't imagine that carnal entertainment is strictly a human vice. If the Shire has a tavern, then that tavern's gotta have at least ONE wench!
