Hey guys, I am new to this site and got me a wacom tablet a month ago, I really enjoy the community here and I have learned a lot from the forums, here are some of my sketches with my new wacom tablet.
I started drawing ever since I can remember myself as a kid but never took it to a career level, I worked as a photographer and freelance graphic designer for many years but I was always inspired and with love with concept art, especially concept books like Warcraft and star wars and many others. I am fascinated by the human form and I think it's an amazing tool to have and to draw, my inspirations are Michelangelo Leonardo Da Vinchi, Frank Frazetta, Boris vallejo and others, they are true masters of anatomy.
I love Anime and fantasy books like the lord of the rings.
So here I am trying to get myself into the concept art industry, with good friends and artists to help around I know I can do it.
Thanks for stopping by! ^_^

Hi, the onion got nice colors but lacks volume on what i think would be a table, it doesn't seem on it but more levitating it's mainly gestion of shadows on the table
Concerning the characters, they need some more studies in term of anatomy and shadings , working in that way will lead to progress for sure.

March 28th, 2009, 09:15 AM
thank you for ur reply! I do need to study anatomy thats my main goal! and feil magnus ur absolutely right about the table, when I finished the onion I noticed that the table strokes werent in the table direction there for it doesnt make it look like one.

Hey guys! thank you so much for the kind words! I am trying to paint as much as I can it's just not enough time for everything! but I will sure keep posting! :)
so many ideas in my head but I lack the knowledge to create it, you know the feeling?
Icecold you're a lot of help keep in touch and we'll do some great things together.
I absolutely love bumskees apple thread, it gave me that old school traditional painting feeling, his use of color is phenomenal and I learn so much by painting still life I love it! :)
here's some more sketches, some are oils some watercolor pencils and what not(sorry for the quality I don't have a scanner) opinions and help always welcome, thanks!

thanks guys! I am moving soon so I dont know when will be the next time I post sketches. Icecold about the terran marine, I am working on a whole full length comic of that genre, i am pretty excited about that! once I finish the first episode i'll surely post it here, it feels kinda epic to do something like that hehe :)
Ice do you have a sketchbook around here?

Hey there buddy! It's been a while.

First of all update more often!!! :ilaekae: :asspat:

I see thatyou need anatomy lessons same as i do, do more colorstudies, try out some custom brushes, do more studies from life, otehr words work work work hard and you will get there one day :]

Best wishes, ( as always :P ) ~Ice

Ok going forward started learning color theory, I must say a pretty involved topic it is and abit confusing... but once grasped there are no limits of what can be created.
tried my hand on some speed painting 25 min each

Icecold
May 27th, 2009, 11:36 AM
Oh, look look enviros! I'm glad to see you trying to study on different subjects, one thing that i suggest is using maybe a bit more desaturated color palette it would help alot for that gal's portrait and the pine in the foreground. Abyways, you are improving and that's noticible.

Best wishes, Ice

Danny_K
May 28th, 2009, 09:03 PM

I am completely unhappy with those other over saturated monstrosities, but hopefully this one looks decent? another environment speedy and few sketches.

So a friend of mine suggested me to work more on values in grayscale and to bring out the shapes and thats what I did.
here is a revised version before and after.

Icecold
June 2nd, 2009, 11:25 AM
I'll try to help you abit as much as i can, so here are the tips.

First of all i've noticed that you have problems of technical nature, that means you are picking the wrong brush with wrong settings :>

1. Go to Brush palette and search for the "Hard Round" when you hover mouse over brushes after a sec you should see their names, now go uncheck the "Shape Dynamics", and go to "other dynamics" set them to pen pressure, now make sure that Brush "opacity" and "Hardness" are always set to 100% thats why tablet was made pressure sensitive, control the pressure by your hand and the grip pen ;>

2. Spacing, go to the brush palette (not the right click one) click on the "brush Tip Shape" tab and on the bottom you'll see spacing slider described in % lower it to around 10% the more you lower it the more smooth it will become but keep it in mind that working on huge files with huge brushes spacing lags them, so 1% is superb smooth but will lag alot 10% is pretty ok.

3. When painting from photo refference, first of allposition your canvas window next to photo refference window zoom it out and make them look having same size so that you can eyeball the proportion and other stuff from the reff. Usually good idea is to first lay in the bacground as you won't be working on it later. Next Pick the huge brush can be also chalk brush and try to catch the basic shape of the person/object, when you'll get that then start blocking in the colours and for the sake of this exercise don't worry about the details at all yet! When you got the colours blocked siimply start being more precise to finally render it.

4. Hair tip, i could explain it also but i think Lida Bergvist's tutorial will do it 10x times better than me ;>

http://www.furiae.com/popup.php?text=hairtutorial

5. As for eyes keep in mind that they are not perfectly white, go to a mirror and take a look they reflect alot of things from the enviroment plus they have small veins etc etc, and most likely at both end they become more flesh toned rather than being white.

Hope i helped.

Danny_K
June 5th, 2009, 08:53 PM
Icy thanks bro, I checked that stuff and I think I'm getting the hang of blending, it's actually harder for me to blend then to pick the right colors, go figure :/
here's a still from life, about 1 hour
and some eye and gesture studies

Danny_K
June 7th, 2009, 12:58 AM
busy day this one was, I actually got some painting and drawing done today!
more then usual on the expense of other things though :/

Hey,

that before and after correction in #33 was really good practice. It looks much better now! :)
Perhaps you could try to touch up the contours in this painting. You might give your piece more quality with very little effort.

And your eye studies are great! They really have a nice quality :) Kepp going mate

June 7th, 2009, 01:12 PM
ok so what i wanna say its that ...
in my opinion you should let a bit the imaginative stuff a side and focuse 2 or 3
weeks on anatomy

and from here **** proportions

and i can't stress enough about the importance of 3 4 min life drawing sketches

take the wide of the pencil and block in the big masses only
or try charcoal dust or every technique that allows you to make solid shapes as fast as possible

remember you will learn a loot of movement and proportions from this

cheers mate

Danny_K
June 9th, 2009, 12:04 AM
thanks for dropping by guys, I sure do need lots of studies, especially more from life painting.
here's some scribbling around with custom brushes, all from head does it show? LOL
kind of feel like oil pastels.

it's coming along nicely though I would like to hear any suggestions and critique?
it's always most appreciated!

perspective and color practice from a photo, about an hour and something

Philipp Scherer
June 25th, 2009, 03:24 PM
hehe, okay, you´re really learning it, and it´s getting better and better. immense improvement.
try to avoid total colours in the environment studies. the colours in the distance have less satiation than the one in the near.

so you´re doing well, just keep practicing and you´ll get it.
bye

Zorcron
June 25th, 2009, 03:32 PM
wow man that last one is a big improvement
i would really keep going for more along those lines

IMO leave texture alone for a bit longer
and keep trying to get those values and colors spot on

thanks for posting ! keep up the fight !\

also the color wont be the same in the foreground as it is in the backround and if they are
it just makes the painting hard to read IE: those whiteish lights look to be the exact same color from the closest
to the farthest so its hard and confusing to read

hope that makes sense

Zorcron
June 25th, 2009, 10:42 PM
thanks for dropping by my sketchbook !

ive got another thing to add which would be
to paint from life either some still life or
get out in the fresh air because often times
in photos color gets pretty mutilated by the camera

have a good evening keep the updates coming ^ ^

hey guys thanks a lot for taking the time to peek into my sketchbook!

I took those points in mind and tried to implement it in this one,yes another subway from photo :D took me around 2 hours too long imo but it's all about experimenting and learning for me so I don't want to rush anything I know speed will come.

hey, danny, thanks for visiting my sketchbook! youve a lot of creativity. its cool to watch the progress in your still lifes or photo studys!

keep practicing!

Danny_K
June 28th, 2009, 12:54 AM
glad you like it :)
this one took me a long time way too long, I had a very distracting time, but the next ones will take no more then few weeks to prepare, this comic was a great learning experience.

Icecold
June 30th, 2009, 01:05 PM
Yo Danneh!

Great improvemnt i must say, that subway piece is showing it all.
Keep doing more of theese color studies, but try using less photos and paint more from life if possible, also try to benefit more from the layer system that PS has to offer and use some blend modes on them.

A tip. when painting something let's say red if u observe it enough carefully you will see that it has more red tones rather than 1 or 2 try implement it to your stuff.

As i said before you are on right path, just keep walking.

Danny_K
July 5th, 2009, 01:48 AM

pantless_wanderer
July 13th, 2009, 12:53 AM
You're clearly improving, but some of your paintings still lack contrast (mostly it's the environments). Maybe doing some simple still lifes with graphite or charcoal might help. This way you're not distracted with colors and simply need to render the tone of the light as well as you can. After getting good at this you'll get an easier time when working with colors.

And I lolled at the Starcraft comic. Thats a great idea! :D

Icecold
July 16th, 2009, 05:02 PM
Those eyes are looking great, altho the lack some contrast as the guy above me said. I also find their light reflections look very weird, not real. try to playa round with blend modes to enchance them. Also don't be afraid to make an adjustment layer, like lvels, contrast/brightness or epxosure, it can really improve overall feel.

Keep it up, reporting out.

Danny_K
July 26th, 2009, 02:03 PM
hey guys!
been awhile since my last post, bah so busy barely had time to draw this month :(
any way

Icecold you are right! the reflections suck! big time lol didn't see that will take notice of that for next time.

pantless_wanderer yes I am working more on contrast and values now just check out my next piece

this one is for the blizzard contest, I start with grayscale so I dont have to worry about anything else for now except values and composition and after that I can start put color on it, I never tried this before so this is very experimental for me.
The orc looks too much like lord of the rings orc imo but I think I will leave him as it is. I like the red flag it kind of fills in the atmosphere and leads the viewers eye to the right direction what do you guys think? opinions about composition values color anything at all will be greatly appreciated!

you're critique guys worth gold so don't hesitate to drop a word or two!

cheers!

Zorcron
July 31st, 2009, 03:42 PM
i feel like in this last painting you are trying to do too many things in one painting

it feels like there are 5 different paintings happening at the same time i think you should try and focus on one or to elements that you like and flesh them out

just my 2 cents :) keep up the fight !

Icecold
August 3rd, 2009, 12:30 PM
Hmm, i think you've made yourself a harder job by doing it this way.

First of all I think you went too fast too details in that grayscale sketch, leave it simple you will efine later. Overlay or color layer with basic colous and then overpaint. That's hwo most of people including myself are doing.
Altho cool idea, ah big bad orc protecting a vunerable weak woman, is it love or desire? ;>

P. S Those clouds start to look neat!

Danny_K
August 8th, 2009, 11:11 AM
Zorcron thanks I will consider that :P
Ice! yeah I was kinda carried over with this piece and started the rendering too soon, I am in the process of it it will take time until I finish it though because I can't release it before it looks the way I want it to.

a quick speed painting was experimenting with brushes on this one.

any way a little background about this dude, so he was walking around the scrabble in a local scrap yard to look for a pipe to fix his toilet, and he found one but it wasn't just an ordinary pipe it was the pipe of a mad scientist who lost it when his lab blew up this pipe is charged with epic powers and the wielder of this epic pipe gains +10 to toilet fixing skills and +100 to saving on electric bill.

anyway here's a small update on the orc piece.

Icecold
August 11th, 2009, 07:34 PM
Hmm its getting better but i almost can feel your pain with finishing this piece :P

If you have started with basic colours or overlayed some colours earlier it would be much faster. Take a look on a samurai speedpainting in my sketchbook, and it took me like 2h and 10-20 min. Because its waaay faster if you start like i said. :mod:

Philipp Scherer
August 17th, 2009, 08:38 PM
listen to icecold! he´s absolutley right.
anyway-it looks awesome.great detail. clouds in the back: brilliant. the red gives some suspense to the image.maybe you should lower teh saturation on the ground in the back.
nice progress-keep it up

Danny_K
August 19th, 2009, 10:53 AM
thanks for the help guys I keep it all in mind, so helpful when others look at my work and see whats wrong I can't find everything thats wrong without critique.

so this one is from a photo, a collection of amazing photos I received the other day of Us troops in Iraq to my email this specific one though was my favorite.
I tried to make it a speed painting but I think it took too long about an hour maybe less, but hey it's all about learning right?

and then just some sketches into the night, let my mind wander to somewhere...

August 19th, 2009, 11:30 AM

Icecold
August 20th, 2009, 09:56 AM
Uhm speedies can take even longer than an hour, it's about you painting fast; but you can actualy spend alot time on a speedie sometimes. Its about sculpting the image with some quick strokes or random, rough forms etc.

I see that you are experimenting with custom brushes, good it's always cool to have your own library with favourite brushes. Do more black & white stuff and practice the efficent use of value. Laters! :geekg:

good work great feeling i feel like its hard to read the shield though and when i squint if i didnt know it was a shield it would be hard to
tell how he had it suspended in the air but thats movie stills for you haha... your use of value is improving loads keep
up with the B&W studys they are doing you a lot of good

break out some traditional mediums man its
a whole different vibe and a very nice way to work i find

keep up the good fight !

Danny_K
August 26th, 2009, 11:10 PM
jack1995 thanks buddy! glad to know that my junky art inspires some one :)
Zorcron thanks for the critique always appreciated! squinting does help a lot in the learning process that's for sure, and the thing is with movie stills that they don't make much visual sense sometimes, there was an immortal in mid air with his butt up in this still, it took me 2 minutes to figure out what tha heck is that thing obviously I didn't draw him LOL

I took Zorcron's challenge and took the candle pic from his sketchbook took me around 40 min

Danny_K

I was looking through Colepoopface's sketchbook http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=118736&page=3 and I got inspired from his fantastic work and anatomy studies, and his posts crack me up.

this one started as a figure experiment and then just went trough with it around 2 hours I think, into the night + mp3

August 30th, 2009, 11:08 AM
Hi Danny_K; nice sketchbook so far. The faces you draw are good. I think using more photoreference would help you. Your digital b/w works have a too high contrast; maybe you should not start with white as a background colour. Keep practicing!

Danny_K
August 30th, 2009, 01:16 PM
engelhardt Thanks a lot for pointing that out! you are absolutely right my black and whites are waaaaay to contrastic and it doesnt look realistic, bah that's it back to the reference! I really appreciate the critique!!

Icecold
August 30th, 2009, 05:58 PM
Tup turrutup! Iceman is back! :steph:

That candle piece is really neat!
I think that your mind is still locked in the cage, when it comes to painting you think too much about details too early. Take a look at the wip of Colepoopface's. ( I saw his works, and i admit they are superior)

He doesnt start on a white background, i usually start out on neutral 50% grey or throw in some basic colours from start. It is much easier to think then, with no shiny canvas blinding you ;>

Second thought, i was suggested to sculpt form with blobs, mostly by using huge brush sizes. Few strokes can usually lead your mind to a great idea, of creating something. Also don't pick black for your value sketches. Pick something dark but not 100% black, it then makes it easier to work with it.
Sure sometimes pure black is THE choice, but those are rare situations.

I also suggest doing posemaniacs 30 sec poses qite often, eventually you will get the hang of describing something with simple understandable forms.

Lay in some textures to your work from time to time, they can bring something unique to your work. It's sometimes color, form, or a fancy effect.
Use what photoshop offers, whatsever in it, it's made for peep's to use it.
Gradients are cool to lay in some atmosphere.

I know how difficult it is to do it by yourself as i am exacly in your shoes, also a self learner. We have to work our asses twice as hard to get to some point but hell no, i don't regreat any second spent on my " gettng beter" trip. Hang on budd, best wishes, as always.

August 31st, 2009, 12:39 AM
Iccyyyyyyyyy! thanks a lot for the kind words man, you really push me forward with you're comments and I thank you for that, and all the artists who bother in looking at my sketchbook and giving me advice I thank you too!!
I tried a 50% background in this one it started as just a value and brush experiment and led to these Alien designs, I feel it's not as contrastic as the other ones.
and also a norseman wip

Icecold
August 31st, 2009, 04:12 AM
There! you did it! and now it looks way better.
I think that video tutorials by superb artist Daarken
could be useful for finishing that norse warrior.

http://www.youtube.com/user/daarken

P.S i am not concerned if you're using the right brush, when i started painting i also thought that i am using the right ( Hard round) brush.
Make sure it is it, it's the one which u can have vector like effect if not set to other dynamics.
By the way what tablet do you use?

more progress on the Norseman, it took me like 40 minutes to place the chain mail because I didn't like how it looked in the first attempt so I tried to figure out a way to adjust it, looks kinda sketchy but I'm happy with it.

quick thing here the Values on the axe Warrior are almost the exact same as the backround so it naturally makes the painting hard to read i would probably define a light source and probably fade the backround quite a bit so he Pops

looks good though im not a buff on the type of actual armor and weaponry he would have if he was Norse from X Time period but it helps sometimes to go do some research and referance hunting

keep em coming !

i so love the sparkly bits that make those creatures what they are~

seeing how you improved on landscapes from page 1 till 3 is quite impressive...you make me think i still have a chance with landscape details n such :)

I have an advice on that norse guy, which you can basicly apply to all your future work. You did put some light gray as a neighbor of his bright chain mail,
well the good thing to do is try to balance values and put darker colors/values to emphasize the brighter colors/values and so on. So lay some darker values near the bright spots to make them pop out more. Also try to make his shoulder visible as for now it's completely flat. I also assume that your refference was a samurai, which i can see by the pose of his legs and the way he's holding his axe looks exacly like he was wielding a katana. Try to close his hand to make it look like a soldi grip :] ...ooor you can make him hold an enormous sized sword, which would be very cool.

P.S If you havent yet, get Manowar-Gods of War album, you may find it very epic and inspiring.

Hey guys thanks for the tips! you all are like a good medicine for me that keeps me from being lazy keke :P

Zorcron you're right I've noticed that the background needs to be adjusted, as it's still wip I go back and forth and try out different things.
A little history about the Norseman ( boooring I know), they are more known by the name Vikings or Gauls (man of the north) basically these guys are from Scandinavian origins and they kicked every ones butt in Europe from the 9th to the 11th century, they spread all over and savaged mostly on the seas like pirates.
these guys even reached North Africa and north America with their long pointy ships, and there's still a settlement that was founded by them in Canada today.
the armor and the axe is the one they used at that period. (except of course the huge world of warcraft style long sword he's holding now LOL)

BlackDelphin thanks! I actually didn't want to post that landscape on 78# because I think it's lame but this is a sketchbook after all so I basically post everything unless it's really horrid in unrecognized ways to man kind, I feel I have a very long way with my landscapes for I am really struggling with custom brushes and color, but I'm glad you like it! :)

Icecold thanks for the push! the dark next to light and light next to dark is an awesome tip! it does make every thing pop out. I must say you have very strong observation! the reference did hold a sword! but not a katana though, if you are interested to see the reference you can get it here http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n242/acidbullet/norseman2.jpg
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n242/acidbullet/norseman1.jpg ,feel free to use it if you like! it's a book I got as a gift called "the fantasy figure artist's reference file" by Peter Evans "Barons publisher" I like this book because it has a lot of unique poses to use as reference.
anyway here's the sword you asked and you know what it does look cool! hehe, and about your question in the previous post I am using Wacom intuos2 6x11 which is really nice for a widescreen monitor.

so some more progress on the Norseman

and i don't think it's lame, but i know that feeling: right now i have a lame landscape myself that i was thinking if to upload or not, and then i remembered, just like you, that i have to upload here everything!! so don't take out anything now :)
just upload in a small format if you don't want to take up space on the screen or desktop, but upload

Actually you know what I was just thinking? Are you using your monitors Native resolution or Aspect ratio? If not it can make your images look stretched. I had that problem before and I had to come up with a formula to adjust all my images back to the way I saw them as I was painting them. I had to find out by looking at them through someone else's computer.

thanks guys!
I have been real busy lately overloaded with freelance projects and Landed on a new job in graphic design which took all my drawing and painting time away :( still I found the time to hop into the city Library and take the Andrew Loomis figure drawing for all it's worth book and start learning Anatomy more seriously, I try to draw every day at least 30-60 minutes.
As I read through the book it's truly amazes me how relevant are Mr Loomis's teachings to todays standarts, back then 40 or 50 years ago it was commercial art today it's game design and movie industry, every piece of information in this book is gold.

Great it is admit i must, drawing skills of yours
improved alot have had, proud of you am I !

Mastah Yoda would be too ;P

When it comes to loomis, hmm he truly was a great artist but his books arent that good for beginners in my opinion.
He often jumps from a sketchy concept into a finished piece without giving an idea whats in between.
I'd stick to Bridgeman for now, altho it's only my opinion.

I'm not a fan of studing from other people work - i just don't like it, it bores me to try to redraw/repaint someone else picture but i do agree that it's a really good way to learn and gain knowledge about different techniques and styles.

Hey hey!

Good that you've started those color studies, but look at this picture:

http://www.privateislandsonline.com/wallpaper/1024x768/palm-tree-wallpaper-1024x768.jpg

Palm tree's leaves usually have some yellow-green color to them. Also take a look how much blue of the sky is in the shadows, it's an important thing to know ( how blue light of the sky affect the surroundings). Plus like i said before try to look at your work on a different monitor, it;s abit pale right now. Maybe you simply need to adjust some stuff, try out this site:
http://epaperpress.com/monitorcal/

P.S The quick, easy effective and good looking way to create a sky fast is to lay in a gradient.

*Thumbs up*

Icecold
November 6th, 2009, 07:29 AM
Hey, can you share the site with such sexy shadows to draw? i love this type of lightning, it produces very interresting shadows.

Now i've a feeling that you are using the wrong brush all the time, i remmember i was using it thinking it was the hard round one with other dynamics when i was starting the whole digital stuff like an year ago.

Now the second thing is that you persist in using very dark values too much, actually abusing it. Do some more gradiation studies. And keep working with only few earlier established values, like you did with the naked lady on the very last pictures.

I'm also very happy that you've actually started to paint more often, i remmember the two of us starting out in bumskee's thread and it's making me happy that my mate is constantly improving, it's like a journey that we're on.

As for the neeed a hand pic, i'd rather pick a large soft brush to creata that glow and tweak it abit later, all of this on hard or soft light layers.
Advice for that particular picture, or rather a how light and shadow works theory. Warm lights are warm, then analogously to that shadows will be cool. When you have cool lights the shadows will be warmer.
Also study how light reflects from different srfaces. Will help a ton!

Yet another thing, you need to blend stuff better, it all looks choppy now, perhaps it's the fault of the brush which i think it might be in some way.

On the space thingie there's actually no focal point my eyes were running all over the image looking for that particular spot to hang 'em on.
I'll try to help you with a small overpaint later, will post it here.
I will try to analyse your picture and use my weak knowledge trying to aid you in your journey. :asspat:

Last but not least, i think you actually need to know why you are doing those mannikins.
It has one purpose (altho i think bridgeman explains it way better in his work than loomis does)
To learn how to cinstruct things, you neeed to lear how to think like an architect. Bring down every object to simple understandable forms, making them fit in one piece and after that shaping them for realistic look. Drawing them by only drawing will teach you nothing, this rules apply for many aspects of life.

Now that was abit of constructive crits, it was only to help you, not to make you sad or angry just to mention. Now how could ever say samoething bad about my bud

P.S Here's what set of settings you should use for the brush, I personally have the shape dynamics turned off.
http://daverapoza.wordpress.com/2009/10/17/creating-sketchin-brush-skype-reviews/

EDIT: ok Here is the overpaint of that gal. i went thru it really quick just to show you how much better it looks like, when the choppyness is gone. smooth=sexy :D
Ah i think that you should also work out your lines, make them less shaky, more stable and smooth.

http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/6618/0034q.jpg

And here's also a quick paintover your battle ship, abit balanced out composition, did some variations to the planet herself. I've enlarged the battle ship by simply adding some smaller space ships around it. They show the scale between them and the large cruiser. Now what's also very important is the story factor. Every good art piece should have some story telling, not too much tho first is the painting not the tex, get it? ;)
I've played abit with the colors also to give this piece more depth, even tho it took me only few minutes to do those adjustments you should get the idea of what i meant to achieve.
Hope that helps you, and either you should change your monitor or pay more attention to values, as most of your darks are really dark or "pale black".

In matter of fact, the glow around this planet should be even less saturated.

Ah i forgot to mention one thing, you do a common mistake of shading with black and brightening with white. Now select this line in your brain and press shift+delete for perma erase ;D

Now learn abit about color harmonies and such thing, and exchange black with darker ( not always very dark ) values of other colors.
Take a look how darker areas are handled here:

Hey! I just looked again through your first sketch book pages and i can say without any doubt that you made a huge progress- congrats!
Keep up with the anatomy study and with the painting studies- you're getting better and better with every page that you produce.

One advice though, try maybe to finish a picture from start and till the end (i don't do it often either) but try to make more finished pictures (like the spaceship pic), it's hard to draw/paint something but it's way harder to start something from a lil sketch and work on it till it becomes a finished picture.

There are some construction problems however, i described whats wrong on this picture:
http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/7421/bottle.jpg

As for the value study, it may sound obvious but you won't learn anything if working from head. To learn you must observe nature and mimic it, the best way is to simply draw from life like you did with this bottle.

P.S thanks for those pics, there are so many of them! \^^/

Royzy thanks man I am really trying to improve.

I am always feeling intimidated by trying to paint new things, especially landscapes and complex pictures, at first it all seems too much and I get discouraged even before starting, I guess after the first few strokes are down it doesnt seem so bad any more, the problem is making that first step into the chilly water the rest of the swimming is fun.
I decided to change my attitude towards art thanks to "Icecold (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=149698)" and "Bobby chiu's (http://www.youtube.com/user/digitalbobert#p/u/3/B3Hc3JlrVOQ)" influential and totally inspiring broadcasts thanks guys!

Mr. Ice is back with another (hopefully usefull hint)

To avoid choppyness, place a wash layer under your sketch and fill it with a huge sized brush, don't worry of going outside the lines, you will fix it later.
After that wash simply create a layer above your lineart and start from there.
And try working with as big brush, as possible, you'll get used to it eventually.
Now, another important thing, background around bright areas ought to be darker, and vice versa, this helps things to pop.

Now as for your previous 2 pieces, i really see the improvement in the use of colors, you have one word tatooed on your forehead " PROGRESSION" ;D

P.S What's she waiting for, hmm? haha ;)

Can you show an example of what you mean? you can use this sketch:

Now i must say that you definitely have improved in using colours and values, no more milky white blacks, and more juicy blackness and shiny colourz.
Glad, that i could also help with the edge sharpness ;), anyway it's always cool to see how you evolve, cheers.

As for the lady, actually you could give me the sketch alone on in a transparent format like png, but no worries i'll handle. Will Update in few minutes.
P.S Ohhhh She thinks of me!! How sweet, wish she was real ;<

EDIT: Ok here's what i meant, you simply wash in some tones and go from there, it can be done on a multiply layer( don't worry about going out of the lines you can fix that later on, or put directly under your sketch layer and filled with paint on a no blending mode on layer. The you simply create a layer on top and paint over it, enjoy :)
Ah, also keep working on those long str8 smooth lines, it improves overaal visual appearance.

PS'2. Sign up for lifedrawing classes, it will help you a ton! i plan on doing it myself.

Hey! You are really improving fast with the painting and drawing!
Your anatomy is getting better with every page- just don't forget about women and children anatomy - try o draw 'em too or you"ll quickly get bored with drawing naked men. :)
Try to draw close ups of different body parts: noses, eyes, etc. to relly understand how they are suposed to look.

Keep up the great job!

Alex.

November 20th, 2009, 03:59 PM
Thanks Alex I know I know I'm not gonna draw naked men forever LOL, I am just getting the grip of the male form and then I will move to the females and I really need to study head and hands, it's all part of the plan just need more time! Can you burrow me some time please? thanks :)

Hmm, get Vilppu's tutorials then, he teaches anatomy in a very good and understandable way. Plus it's always better to see how the drawing is actually
being drawn, not just images, cheers friend.

stupid 20 year old neighbor turned his Rap music at 11:00PM and that Sub woofer is gonna make my head explode. that idiot pointed a gun on some worker that came to do something the other day and he got 30 day notice to leave the apartment, so now he doesn't give sh!t about any one. I gotta move out of this neighborhood...

The twinter tree picture from refrence is looking really good, some more details and it would be great.
I like the trees on the right and left side of the background they look very realistic but the trees in the front looking like you didn't finish 'em.

The plane is good but look at the edges of the wings and it's body, they look too smooth- in real life planes most of them are sharp, some of it's body parts look bent- like the tail.
The colour seems uneven too.

Hope i wasn't too harsh on you.
You're getting better and better with every pic so keep drawing and painting!

Alex.

Bumblee Bee is über, but didn't you use the color picker? It's not that good idea to leearn with it, anyways great studies.

Hey Danny, wows, you're a hard worker, good stuff! Some sweeet painting in here, you're excelling at some of the enviros man! Transformer looks great too. I like all the anatomy practice - though I feel you linework could do with some polish. This is hard sketching in digital I know - I've tried myself and it always looks messy, just try to feel the curves before touching the tablet and put down some bolder strokes. Anyways it's all practice. If you ever get to watch a Gnomon video by Bob Kato on drawing the head, and Feng Zhu on conept sketching - very useful I found. - they talk alot about line quality, which helps in all areas :) Keep it up mate.

I'd say practice the planes of objects first and establish a single light source, that way it really emphasizes the forms. Also, that Bumblebee is looking cool.
The movie TFs have very complex structures. Looks like great practice!

Peetaer thanks buddy I'm glad I could help :)

Slothboy3000 yeah this is a crazy form/plane/texture/value/color/metal practice LOL!

Icecold does that mean we will have to sleep in the same room and fight over the computer? sounds cool :P

krel If I will finish it this year LOL

So today was an interesting day, I had a photo shoot at a fast food restaurant ( I am a photographer, but I am willing to change my profession to a Concept Artist ) I was shooting food for the menu and good food! I mean fast food is awesome no wonder so many overweight people here in the States it just tastes good! any way after the shoot I took all the food and gave it to a homeless person who was surprised to get a whole bag full of sandwiches hamburgers chili and fries. at least one hungry person was fed today.

Not much to show today just a sketch and some more progress on BB
I fixed his waist and legs and I don't even want to say how much I worked on his right foot it's too embarrassing, but I take it as a very big practice in Metal drawing, color and value observation.
I also decided to set a goal for myself today, I will try get my first freelance job in 6 months from now, wish me luck!

No problem! I always glad to cheer up friends when they're down I would like you to cheer me up when I'm down too OK? :)

I will never give up on finishing that metal yellow head, well except if a nuclear war breaks out or I break my right hand, no way! I'll probably reach 30 hours by the time I'm done with him, but who's counting ah? LOL

Head studies Ah I am far from doing any decent heads I dont feel I get it yet but once I get that feeling I will try :)
motivation rhymes with frustration and they are both unfortunately part of being an artist, I struggle with these 2 fellas every day, just part of the battle, but life wouldn't have a meaning without those two wouldn't it?

Hehehek, That's the spirit bud! about that self portrait it may be awhile because I have many ideas in my mind and from knowing myself when I put fresh ideas aside they lose they're blink and it tends to rot in the "Ideas" or "WIP" section and my time is limited as it is :( so bare with me I will get to it evantually.

WELL I MOST CERTAINLY WILL DO THAT DANNY!! :D :D :D

And you can bet i'll kick you a$$ if you slack off ;)

Also stop counting the hours!! LoL! If i would do that, i'd certainly slow myself down, not knowing how much i can actually take on.

I think it is time! Just do one already!! ;P If you will wait for the perfect moment, then you shall never start! you wait for a moment when everything will be cosy, healthy, new, you will know everything already? there wont be any point in practising by that time! you will have already achieved your goal haha! that is, if that pitch-perfect moment ever comes..
Did i make any sense? lol..i just went on and on xD

And i think if it wouldn't be so hard, if we wouldn't have to struggle , then it wouldn't be worth it. ;)

Now! :D
The spoon is mega awesome!!! The little spot of colour and the little scratches and dots on the edges really make it look so detailed, so delicate, so crisp..so well done in two words.
The little bot isn't plain, but he isn't to special either. If you keep that sketch though, adjust his right wing a bit because it seems off, and to foreword; and speaking of, that facility elite has some proportion issues too; the lower part of the legs.

See you soon with a new update. :teeth:

Danny_K
December 6th, 2009, 04:13 PM
Yeah you're right, I am not waiting for the perfect moment though but your right, I'll see what I can do :)

The reason I'm counting hours is to see how better I get, for example it used to take me 2-3 hours to do a still life like that spoon it's down to 1.5 now
also in the industry time is everything, I am eventually planning to start working in this industry and I can't take my time with each art work it has to be quick and high quality, there are deadlines and the clients wont wait forever unfortunately :(
those sketches are just some scrap I didn't even wanted to upload they were made late at night with barely any thinking or design in them just scrap, I have totally different direction in mind. thanks!

BlackDelphin
December 6th, 2009, 05:39 PM
Oooh you'd better post all you do danny! haha :D
I want to see exactly what you don't do perfect right off the bat, so i can point it out lol so you will try even harder next time

And i think you should still concentrate more on getting better, and only from time to time, when you feel like you need to know, then count the hours!
I for one don't understand to much these feeling you are having now..it may be to early for me, i may be to innocent about it lol, but all i care about is getting better and better, and i don't really think about how customers would want it..i just know i want to be better.. and better..and i don't compare myself with others either, i just know that i have to keep going, all the time! :D

So yeah! Sorry for babbling nonsense again >_<

I've meant to post earlier, but it kept getting away from me!

I LOVE bumblebee! The detail you're including is awesome. The one area that's getting lost is your light source. Where is it coming from? *greyscale and zoom out check* That's the thing to decide on and change before you dive all the way into details. The details are fairly easily salvageable if you do have to change values in place though. Anyway, I'm major impressed with how you've managed to have all the parts interact so well.

Your facial anatomy is definitely improving too. Great work there. The spoon is lovely too. Just do more of them! Value over colour is what I would suggest for now. Colour doesn't matter as much with metal as it does with other things anyway.

looks like the transformer is coming along nicely.

For the portraits their is a nice filter that can help you to check how you organized your values called posterize. http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=771080&stc=1&d=1252210764 Its really great for checking the lighting, making sure the shapes of the values match the planes you want and just checking the overall read of the image. Its sort of like flipping the canvas, only for value.

For the spoon, maybe a little light reflected back onto the table to show a little bit more interaction between the two.

For the eyes kchen makes good use of a ellipse for the brow that I find very helpful. http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1432 http://www.angelfire.com/art3/kchendemos/

You are right about that freelance stuff you mentioned a while ago, and as long as you have fun too it's ok like that :)

Nice seeing you do more portraits and like Mr E said, they are great when you view them alone, not with a face, so i think you don't need any tuts, but just some more practice, and perhaps more attention when you draw the shading above them. Not to mention your nose!!
A bit more anatomy study for the both of us on the nose would be great. You seem to lack confidence when you draw it, especially when i see the shape and strokes on your latest portrait.

And in case you sometimes forget (like i do lol) note that all what you try do draw is 3D, that you should wrap your strokes around the shape, thus avoiding that flat effect.

Take care danny :meow:

That's my bud, that's D! Keke
That alien guy with a shiny staff, has neat feet i must say!
Well i know what's wrong about those heads, it's actually the way you draw them, you MUST apply the knowledge from loomis, or other books from those early stages, to be honest i forget about it very often myself, but i will fight with it from now on my weapons : Patience, discipline.

Now, lets get to the point of what i mean, you must remmember to analyse the thig you draw as a whole, here's the example

http://images04.olx.pl/ui/2/97/19/18088819_2.jpg

What you did, and we all probably did while studying from bridgeman and othe books, we just COPIED lines, I've understand it finally, but better late than never.
It's like following a path that someone else has walked before us and we are just trying to fit into his footprints with our own feet. Sure Bridgeman and loomis are great, but for the sake of the cause we must study from life.
Now mr http://www.iainmccaig.com/ told a story from his own life on one of the gnomon videos. "In the past i used to always have alot of other artists works on my desk, especially Rockwell's, one day i had to draw grass and i've searched for how Rockwell drew grass, and then i realized i have a large field of grass in front of my house i went out. I drew grass from life for the first time, and then i never had other artists works on my desk ever again" now the sentences may be abit different but you get the point. From now on I'll also stop redrawing Bridgeman or loomis, read it, observe sure, do some sketches occasionally, but gett a huge mirror draw yourself draw your wife, draw your lovely daughter :) Sign ip for life drawing classes. Draw other people, do guirella sketches, don't get compromised! :DD
That's my plan also, i can only wish for enough strenght for us both to survive this journey and be great artists some day, NAH I BELIEVE IN THAT!

Here's a motivation buttkick from me, as the one from you also woke me up from beeing a looser state of mind. Art unites!!

P.S i've started saving money so i can go to Cali and study with ya ! ; )

Shall i use one of his knives to remind you, not to paint on white background!? :DD

I'd personally decrease the contrast on him abit, there are huge jumps between black and light gray, but other than that he's a decent knife handed maniac muahaha high five o/

Ice Ok OK no more white backgrounds...for now... hehe
I need to calibrate my gamma settings I am going nuts with it I used that link you gave me some time ago and I fell asleep reading all that technical stuff, any ideas any help?

got Bridgemans "guide to drawing from life" from the library and it's like nothing I've ever seen before, I didn't know whats the fuss about Bridgeman until I started studying his work, he's a genius.

Some sketches, and a WIP for a business card I'm doing, critique always welcome, thanks!

I know exactly what you mean man and you are right, when I draw from a book I always try to think why does those lines go there and I imagine myself what kind of muscle group is beneath that plane and so on, that way I am not just pointlessly copying I try to learn in the process. I also draw from my head as I go to see what I learned so far.

Drawing from life is the best no doubt man, but you must agree with me my friend that books are a cheap and fast way of studying, I mean those figures has been studied and the poses are there for us to draw and if they are anatomically correct like bridgeman's is then it's a good thing to learn from them, eventually you develope a style of your own it comes naturally but you gotta start somewhere, and besides can you afford a model so many times to study? I sure cant! LOL
It's a dilema many artists have, so we end up sticking with the books eventually :/ but hey it works just as good as long as you understand what your doing.
Thanks for the post man.

latigid Thanks mate, it's an business card for a restaurant actually, the owner which is also a close friend of mine owns two restaurants, one in Mojave desert the other in Tehachapi.

BlackDelphin thanks thanks! I'm glad you like it, the idea is simple two locations for the two restaurants one in the desert the other in the mountains and a mayan face statue in the middle to make things interesting, it was her Idea not mine, she is very talented besides the fact she is a restaurant owner.

Hey Danny, how's it going bud? Sorry to hear you've been down recently man, happens to everyone at some point. But as Bobby Chiu says it's all just a big test for us and the harder we work to get through it the stronger we become at the other side. So keep going, think positive and you'll deffo have more energy for your studies!! Though I think you're doing that already :)

Not much I can crit on, all the work's good practice. If you're doing a bunch of anatomy, spend some time after with a blank page and draw some from memory, I find it easier to block out all sound, turn music off or whatever and try and concentrate in the quiet and really think about the muscle placements, flow and rhythms of the body and all the curves that go with. Of course, everyone different - I just find the memory is great and really concentrating makes it easier!

Keep at it bro!

krel

Bridgman studies lookin sweet! The one to the left you draw from memory looks really good too :)

BlackDelphin
December 18th, 2009, 12:26 PM
ooh i see! so those are the two locations!! :D

i think that statue covers up a ot of space in the middle so it is quite important how you finish that left side.
be careful :)

and about what alex said, i personally can't draw for a long time without music, and i always leave something on a low volume, nature sounds or something, but instead i close cA pages, otherwise i end up browsing lol, get my mobile phone away from me and close anything but photoshop really, especially those chat programs!

AlexTooth Heya thanks buddy, I do know what you mean about just having peace and quiet for yourself to study, unfortunately that's a luxury I don't have right now, the only time I can do studies is late at night when after my daughters bed time, but who's complaining?! I will kick ass!

krel Spasiba ( thanks in Russian)

BlackDelphin I am exactly like that, I can't draw without music, it's just part of me, and I always end up browsing around CA myself and drifting away instead of studying, I will do the same as you, just close everything!
I will get more work done hehe

goldilockz thanks! hope to see you here again

Progress on the business card, any suggestions are welcome

Hey man HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your daughter for yesterday and yeah my boy tends to rearrange everything and i mean everything! The update on the card with the train track seems to lead my eye away and out of the card itself but im no expert on these things. I suppose its gonna make a big difference where the logo or lettering is going to be placed presuming there will be some. Also thought that the join between the two scenes would be better placed right in the centre of the mask not sure if i am helping so i will shut up now!

BlackDelphin
December 19th, 2009, 04:00 AM
Hehe well do tell me if it worked! And if not, what did you do to get it done :)
The card is coming along nicely! And i think that's a lovely idea with the tracks. Perhaps try to stretch them a tad more towards the mountains, but still in that angle. See how that would look. Or..hmm..just a thought, witch could be terribly wrong but, have you considered taking thosae tracks towards the mountains and between them?

Ooh! and you remember to flip the image,no? :meow:

Awaiting that update already!! :D

December 19th, 2009, 04:10 AM
hey dude you have great ideas, but i think when it comes to the execution you need to slow right down. when you paint really try consider what your trying to achieve with your strokes and then meet that goal in as few strokes as possible.

Greetings D, well we wanted to do a collab long time ago, so i thought it's quite a right time. Well and sometimes image can describe more than 1000 words.
So here it is, my three cent's in this buisness card, you can use it and do whatever you wish with it, it's your idea!! Have fun, like i had and that liquified version with funny expression shows it i guess ^^

only one thing I have to say :jawdrop:
It's gorgeous!!!!!@1111111 I'm gonna use this as my Avatar! hHEheehehe

Unfortunately that's not the direction she wanted, I had to change the mask to something happier, and the landscape has to relate and look like the actual places. this is what I got so far.
Thanks a lot for the support guys I love you all!!

Danny said it all! But i'm not going to use it as my avatar ahahah :D

Really bood job ice!! I definitely like the yellowy flow you added to the mask and you balanced the image pretty well too!
And that second version you made with the liquefy tool has a 'huuh?! you want something from ME?!!!' look ahahah awesome :)

Now lets see you finish up the card too danny!!! :teeth:

BlackDelphin
December 21st, 2009, 03:53 AM
Well it certainly looks more friendlier now.
I think the new mask is really really cute! :meow: but perhaps a tad to large? I concentrate to much on it and would completely miss the background details if i wouldn't have seen steps of it first.

And way da go finishing the landscape on the left!! Awesome danny!!!!!

Icecold
December 21st, 2009, 06:44 AM
Well the inca? mask/symbol is the focal here, so the background acts like a filler the first place to look at should be exacly that symbol, and then viewer
explore the other stuff and that's cool it shouldnt bring too much attention so it is balanced out. So Danny did it quite right, but i'd lay in a gradient and play around with the blending modes and after that erase some stuff from that gradient. Because your landscapes lack the atmosphere feel abit right now.

BlackDelphin
December 21st, 2009, 07:19 AM
Yes, it is the focal here, you are right. But i don't know..i just felt like something was wrong and i presumed it was the size. that's why i asked
But now that you mentioned it, i think it's because i can't find an overall mood.

I should critique less and study more.

December 21st, 2009, 10:04 AM

Hey man loving the new avatar hehe :)

Fashion studies looking great, reminds me to do some people with clothes on from time to time lol. I'd say her pelvis is a bit low, maybe raised more and give longer legs. Also the top of the arms seem a little low compared to the shoulders, finally check the right legs bend at the knees, if in doubt try the pose youself :) Keep it going bro!

Hi Danny_K: the piece from #241 looks good, but I think you could improve your environments, when studying from real live. The fashion study you did really rocks! To improve my English: what does C&C stand for? (I guess it is not Command and Conquer ;) )

Icecold
December 21st, 2009, 04:01 PM
C&C means comments and critique

Now That certainly are some good line drawings, the fashion show i mean. (tho the 1st lady is twisted in some innatural way)
Now with this you kinda ensured me that your natural workflow should look like this, lineart->tonal wash-> color many people do it also and everyone should fine a technique that he/she feels comfortable with.

Cheers

The line drawings are really cool, Danny.
Also good to see that you mix it up so much with different studies just in one update.

On the business card (the water cistern and) the road sign looks off. Perspective I guess. Also one of the inka eyes seems to look forward, while one looks slightly upwards. I think thats kinda cute thou :)

See ya next year duder!
