I actually really like the nude in the first post. Sure you don't wanna use that one? The rest are also nice, though I think your characters have some pretty stiff positions, I'd work on that.

Hey man, some good stuff. I can see already that you're growing in ninja skillz, and that is always cool to see.
The tones on the three weapon women there are looking good, but watch the luminance of how you render skin... it can come off looking plastic looking (but that shouldn't be too much of a problem here actually).
Two parts study, one part from-imagination is a good drawing practice ratio. Should work, haha. Keep plugging! :D

Wow wee, what a way to start a sketchbook! These are excellent, I particularly like your sitting-nude (is what lured me here), and the black/white female costumes.
I agree with Janos about the stiffness, but you could easily work on that.
Great stuff!

Thought I'd offload some rough thumbs and unfinished stuff from my 'random drawings' folder at work. most of this is pretty quick. The skull was a sketch I did during today's lunch break. I spent about 45 mins on it. Enjoy.

Regarding your last post. I'm new to digital work and I can't seem to achieve that soft, granulated look with software. I always fall back to working analog, scanning and then finishing up digital. Have you tried this method?

the boogeyman pic isnt as creepy as it could be, the boogeyman's pose is very relaxed, as if he was some sort of hayseed or something (when he was alive). it does however remind me of these great illustrations from a book called "scary stories to tell in the dark" which haunted my dreams as a kid

Great sketchbook heree Mr. Double Shed ;).
Nice to see you're really challenging yourself with all these weekly activities.
I know it's late in saying this but one thing that may have helped with the mechanical man is making it so that even if it might look like a suit, making it look like it would be impossible to wear and thus not like a suit (hope that made sense).
Great work on the misc finished and unfinished studies in here. I burst out laughing at the upside down pipe guy (because I never noticed it at first!).
Keep up the great work!!!

Some fantastic work here Mr Two Sheds. I admire your use of colour in your finished pieces, really excellent. Have your hand drawing skills improved since you did that page of studies? I think I might have to do the same, that way I can stop making excuses as to why my figures have no arms...
The last lot of pencil sketches are really well executed too. Did you by any chance happen to create those drawings in the shed? Have you created any of your recent works in this shed of yours?
Good luck with this week's CHOW, I look forward to seeing the finished piece!

Ha ha. Nice work with the last drawing mate. Your line work is really excellent. I haven't done any non-digital stuff for a while, I hope I can still remember how to hold a pencil... I was wondering what you were going to do with that viewfinder in the foreground of that CHOW piece. Her true nature is revealed!
I live in the Adelaide hills, how about you? Yeah it can be pretty lonely sometimes for us creative types in SA, especially if you work freelance like me. Are you working at Krome? That's the only game developer I know of in SA. I was thinking about applying there a while back but I didn't think I was good enough at the time. I'm my own biggest critic...
Any other Adelaideians that you know of prowling these boards?
Keep up the good work, I shall be stalking you fom now on... :perv:

August 10th, 2009, 07:56 PM
Ha ha! Damn, that's awesome bud! She looks creepy as hell in that viewfinder! I can see a real improvement in your rendering, very sharp. Great work on the blood spray too.

The latest one: The dress looks flat near the bottom... something about the drapery is bugging me.
Also... I've noticed that a few of your recent drawings--while technically near perfect--are kind of held back action wise. There's not much action in the pose of the Queen, for example, nor much in the guy who's riding the giant slug.
Anyhow... that's probably a null point for you. You've certainly got the skills to do what you want anyway.
At least I didn't try to do a TV interview about your sheds ;)

August 12th, 2009, 05:09 AM
Wow man those heads are getting fantastic.
Everytime i look in here there are hueg amount of improvment.
With the pirate queen image, i think what is killing it is that the shillouette of the dress is perfectly straight, it makes a weird mechanical look to the whle thing compounding the stiffness in the pose. Just fix up that and it will look a lot better! Also watch the length of those arms :).

Ohh, not a crappy color sketch at all, but I have such a soft spot for the other for the other sketches - the first one, with the mushroom houses, is especially great. Are the stains behind sepia ink, or maybe coffee? (Makes me want to get coffee all over my own Moleskine and scribble stuff on, because it looks very good, ehe)

Hey Brendan! Amazing job on that last one man, I almost don't want you to keep working on it, it looks so good as it is.
Try not to feel too down if your work isn't turning out as you'd like, as you know it happens to everybody. I'm often surprised when I finish something and I don't hate it. :davi:
I think that Quike Garcia is right about your character poses looking a little unbalanced. I have exactly the same problem, in fact I'm pretty much terrible at drawing legs in general. I think the key is to force yourself to tackle things that you struggle with, even if you hate every minute of it.
Perhaps you should try doing some figure studies in the same way that you did that big page of hand studies. Something like these (from bumskee's sketchbook) ----->

Ha ha, I couldn't remember where I recognised that bald guy from until I read Garth's comment, you captured his likeness perfectly.
Good to see that you finished your steampunk entry, it turned out very nicely indeed. Really well rendered, plus her pose looks loose and nicely balanced, so excellent improvement there.
Your watercolours are looking sweet, I especially like the ones where you have combined them with the ink linework. More of that! Loving that skull too, nice loose brushstrokes and great choice of colours, that red really pops! I've got some paints sitting in a drawer somewhere but I'm too scared to use them.
Ugh, sorry mate I can't think of anything mean to say, I'll try harder next time... :(

Excellent stuff here Arthur!! No idea how I didn't see this sooner!
Beautiful work on those studies and chows. One tiny crit regarding the perspective on the steampunk butterfly girl, the alignment of the middle section of her torso (where her breasts are) seems off compared to the top section (collarbones, shoulders etc). Other than that really nice job on the piece.
Great work on the competition entry too!!
Keep up the great work!

Lovely, lovely textures in all the different materials, they really look like they're different. The ice, the wings and the skin on her legs are especially gorgeous.
There's something unconvincing in her face though, I can't tell if it's just because she has an unsettling look, and the folds on the left side are a bit too 'straight', so they look less natural than the rest of the piece.
Good job anyways, and you have all my admiration for having the stamina to take part in so many challenges of the week! You set such a good example.

Ha ha! You're a funny man Deboy, a funny, strange, sad little man.
Those latest sketches are real nice though, your rendering of the girl is gorgeous!
I wish I could focus on studies too but I need more finished character work for my portfolio, which undoubtedly means that I too will soon feel the same overwhelming combination of shame and self-loathing that you feel now. If we were living in the time of the Ancient Greeks they would write great tragedies about us. Knowledge of our plight would spread throughout the land and even the most battle hardened warriors would take a moment to pity us as they made preparations for war. They would weep Brendan, they would weep...
Oh, I especially like the drawing of Batman on his lunch break. Is he about to stab someone with that hotdog? If so, that is awesome. 8)
Ariel9
January 29th, 2010, 12:13 PM
That Batman is so awesome. I'm so amused by that little man between his legs whose head's about to get crushed.
More seriously, I like your digital sketches but I'd love to see more of your traditional stuff.
And hey, there's something to be said for some stuff in that Team Chow picture! I love the armour - texture, colour. Your renderings are always so smooth!

Ha ha, I'm so glad you get my sense of humor, most people just think I'm weird.
Great stuff as usual Sheds! I know you were a bit bummed out about your first team chow, but I think they look really great as a pair. Nice contrast between them and all that jazz. I really like the design of the tower guy and I'm definitely feeling the rocky texture!
Those sketches are really nice too, the depth of field conveyed in the first one is pretty cool. Love the Joker! I have yet to play Arkham Asylum but I've heard great things about it. I'm still getting used to the fact that someone actually made a good Batman movie, let alone a game.
Keep those studies coming!

i really like this last one, beautiful colours and poses, the studies are paying off. I just noticed that the one side of the cape is blowing in the wind while the other side of the cape on the far left is sitting still. I think if the wind was blowing this strong maybe even the girls hair would be affected as well.
Same thing with the cross necklace, its vertical position kind of stands out, i think it should be on an angle a bit for some movement or if you wanted to keep it straight maybe make the chain look a bit more taut to show some weight.. anyways these are just some small crits, i really like this one man, keep rocking!

Your nice two updates look great. For a critique, I would say that her hips on the chick in the twisting motion looks off to me. All in all, radical.
Also, you're awesome.
It's hard sometimes when you lose sight of the feeling of joy at creating art. I certainly know what that feels like. You inspired me not only to keep working but to think about why I'm working. That tooth fairy image is really cool. That's a great idea!
Since you asked for some perspective:
I think her right arm is too short. If it were hanging at her side, her elbow would be around the bottom of her rib cage and her hand would be around her abdomen. Also, I think her hips aren't quite wide enough compared to her shoulders.
The last thing, which might be hard to change, is that by the santa boot in the foreground we seem to be an inch or two off the ground, worms eye view. It doesn't seem that we're looking up enough at the tooth fairy. The perspective around her feet and knees looks pretty good, but then up by her head we're still looking straight on, when really she's 5', x" above us.
Oh and Santa's boots ought to be shiny.
I hope that helps! It's looking really awesome.

Hi, I just went back trough the last 5 pages or so...don't remember or see if I commented before but I really like what you're doing! Very tasty!
There's an amazing amount of variety here: Studies, CHOWS, mo' serious schtuffeses, humor etc. Sometimes you look through a CA sketchbook and you can peg someone's style within a page or two...not here...and IMHO that is a very GOOD thing!
Speaking of humor I really get yours and love when you unleash it! I literally laughed out loud when I saw the: "If they want potatos...." Guy and his sheepish robot friend holding his leg.
You said a page or two back: "Trying to dive into my thoughts a bit more and pull everything out in it's raw form rather than stuffing it through the mainstream filter."
Amen brother! Testify!

Great updates! The only one that's a bit dodge is the Hobbit one. Spiders are a pain in the arse to pose but that one needs the time. You could make that so threatening if you posed it right, withe legs pointed to it's victim like daggers, or decending vertically on a webline it's fangs poised for the strike.
That last one is a belter BTW!

Here are some natural media experimentations. Found a bunch of sketches when I was cleaning my garage. Not the most polished things in the world but I still find them charming enough.

p sage - Haha yeah.. Thanks a lot man. Good to see you here again.
Velocity Kendall - Thanks VK. I like the soldier pic too. Wasn't sure if other people would be in to that style so I feel a bit strange when I draw like that - part of me feels like I'm wasting my time a bit. Thanks for the encouragement though! Good crit on the boot too.
derekdedgell - Thank you kind gentleman.
Cold - Thank you sir. I'd be interested to hear which pic you were referring to.
Alexanderjr - Thank you sir. I'm having fun experimenting with that actually.
BlightedArt - Thank you my good man.

your pencil works are amazing and so does your painting! Anyway, I went on page 1 through 7 to view your work but I cannot see it only half of page 7 and page is where I can see your works. Its probably on my end. Great work though.

Really good looking media exploration sketches. I really like the one with the space ship above the field with sheep. Also really liked the octopus launcher concept on your blog!
