View Full Version : Troy's 4 Easy Steps To Becoming A Fast Sculptor!

I get asked this a lot, so I thought I'd share my secret with everyone!
(1) Get Married
(2) Have at least two kids
(3) Purchase some food, a house, a car or two, some clothes,
electricity, water and cable with plans to continue paying for these
items. Also, you may need to send your children to school.
(4) If you're currently employed, quit.
Now watch and marvel at how much faster you become at sculpting!
(Step #1 is not mandatory, so technically, you can do this in three easy steps.)
***WARNING!!*** The above plan has been shown to dramatically increase your
stress-levels and lead to an early grave. Proceed with caution. But not too much caution.
You do have a deadline on Monday after all.

Well then Kenny, you're obviously not in debt. enough. Go back to #3
and purchase more of these items. Use your credit card whenever possible.
Bill collectors are essentially drill sergeants for artists. :skull:

Well, I moved house in Dec 1st and have spent money on decorating stuff. And I'd rather buy sculpey instead. Does that count?
Oh and I'm still slow than shit at sculpting. :oneye:

Haha, luckily my economic situation forces me to only consume coffee, water and cigarettes :P No ham sandwiches here, but I'll take the sock anyway. I'm sure it'll bring in some bucks on ebay!

Ah.. the thing is mate, the toe end of the sock was actually dipped in your coffee! And there may even be a few toe nail clippings in your ciggies! And you think that's water you're drinking? Muhahahahahaaaaa

Hey Troy,
I did number 1, 2, 3 but I'm too chicken to do number 4. If I did number 4, I would have to do number 1 all over again. My wife would leave me if I quit my job to sit on my ass to do sculptures all day! LOL!!!!!
I would like to add more....
5> If you don't want to quit your job, be prepared to lose sleep, shun social and family relationships, drink lots of coffee and become overweight and flabby.
Seriously, I would LOVE a tutorial or tips on how to build business like getting people to see your work, building contact lists, and getting your product in stores, etc.

Oh and to be honest - sculpey actually tastes quite good. I accidentaly dissolve some of it in Scotch from time to time. Has a nice touch of candy.

Hi to everyone! I am new on this forum and I am new in modelling.
2 troyboy
2 or 3 days ago I saw all your works first time. Fantastic! All your works are excellent!!! But I agree with Mad Cross. Wher you write 4, you must be kidding or not? Are you serious, when you say, that the modelling and no other work may keep body and soul together yours and your family?:oneye:

I think you gotta have a good business sense, and a product that sells. Troy did a lot of wedding cake toppers, which is a very good niche because it is something that is in a good demand (and not much competition, to boot!) People love special and personal things. I know some people who did #4, and some became very successful. Alas, some did not. It has a lot to do with how good the idea is, how good you are, and having faith and determination.
For now, I am making as many different things as I can and see if I can successful make any extra income off it. I'll probably get laid off from my job in few months with the way economy is going, anyway so I'll have no choice then. Oh well.

Ok. If wedding cake toppers is a good business sense, then what cost for one? Sorry if I understood you not right, english is not my first language.
And it will be greate if Troyboy will answer himself:sungod: It is your topic, Troy!))))

Am I kidding about step #4? Well, yes and no. I don't think anybody
should take that leap unless (A) you're single and have nothing to
lose except maybe your electricity for awhile and (B) if you have a
family (especially with kids) you shouldn't do it unless you're EXTREMELY
self-critical (like, insanely self-critical and able to take outside
criticism), you have a really nice portfolio to show, a few jobs lined
up already and a strong sense of where you want to go and how you're
going to get there. Even then, it's still not for everybody.
On the other hand though, it really is one of the best motivators in
the world and you will either become a better, more marketable
sculptor, or fail, in which case, sculpting should probably remain a
hobby and not a career choice.
As far as your question, "Are you serious, when you say, that the
modelling and no other work may keep body and soul together yours
and your family?", I think something got lost in translation here.
For now, I am making as many different things as I
can and see if I can successful make any extra income off it. I'll
probably get laid off from my job in few months with the way economy
is going, anyway so I'll have no choice then. Oh well.
Keep at it my friend. You've definitely got some fantastic skills there
and I know you're just going to get better with more practice. A portfolio
with a variety of subject matter and styles is a good idea, but like I said
above, figure out exactly what direction you want to go in (action figures,
dinosaur modeling, superheroes, horror collectibles, etc.) and focus on
that. Do research, find out which companies are producing what and what
are their policies regarding freelance work. It's a lot of work, but all worth
it when you finally start getting those paying gigs.

My cake toppers ran from $500 up to $2500. It's a good business, but there's
no room for error, i.e., missing deadlines. You think an art director gets
stressed out when you're getting close to the deadline? Try a bride-to-be.
No contest my friends. No contest at all. I'm very proud of the fact that out
of more than 120 cake toppers, I never missed a single deadline. Not one.
Anyway, good luck out there to everybody!
