ROBOTS
update:
no anime chicks or cartoony Ringling characters here. This is not design a Peter de Seve rip-off for Blue Sky. This is a robot you or nobody else has ever fucking seen before. What? Is that possible? Hell yes it is- Use your imagination mofo's, and make it happen!!!
ok, here's some key things to keep in mind if you need some guidance. (Feel free to add suggestions to this coco and broken.)
1- Design- Not only great design that's cool and different,
but also clear in presentation. Silhuette is very
important; if you foreshorten or crop, it might
hide pertinent info to the design, so be careful.
2- Composition- I'm thinkin 16x9, make it look like a film
plate (i.e look at some of sparth's) Think
Degas and rule of 1/3's. Its ok to crop.
* Ok, maybe have an illo with the full design, then a second illo placing that design into a filmic composition.
3- Perspective- Try to push this if you can, sometimes a
dynamic perspective can make a simple
design look great. Again, think Degas. Get
the camera and pose to work together.
THESE ARE ONLY SUGGESTIONS GUYS. Good luck.....

here is my robotic nightmare. heh- I don't think I followed any of my earlier suggestions for guidelines for this. Instead, I tried out a new method. I've posted the progress along with this.
There's a few things that need work, and I would love comments.

I like to draw on newsprint because it lets you be loose. I liked what was developing with this thumbnail, so I just took a photo of it with my digital (its faster than scanning) into photoshop, and added a little more scribble.
http://www.bensprout.com/tyrabotism_p2.jpg
Starting to block in the forms and figure out the lighting.
http://www.bensprout.com/tyrabotism_p3.jpg
I'm kinda lost but picking away.... finding the shapes and silhuette first, then turning the forms
http://www.bensprout.com/tyrabotism_p4.jpg
I didn't like some of the initial forms, like those tentacles. There was a reason why I hadn't touched them- they were boring and not for this design. Besides, I wanted to put in some transformer-esque elements, which included some boxier forms. I stole the idea for the wires from Jae Lee. There's still a lot I need to figure out at this point. This happens when you start with scribble.
http://www.bensprout.com/tyrabotism_p5.jpg
More refining.
http://www.bensprout.com/tyrabotism_p6.jpg
more refining. I figured out what to do with those pods.
I am still not happy with the laser lights. Yes, they are laser lights.......
for this design, I was thinking about how this robot would perform as a foe in a game, as a boss perhaps. It has multiple forms of attack, both blade and projectile, and I'm imagining how annoying those fish pods would be. They could just keep coming out of the mouth one after another. The hands like to grab opponents and impale their heads on the spike. The tentacle could block projectile, absorb their power, and hit back, ect.
http://www.bensprout.com/tyrabotism_1.jpg
this is robot #1. If I have time there will be more. and they won't drag on and take as long to make either, and they'll be even better mech-killas!

damn B that robot is rad man
cool design--its pretty original too--the only thing it slightly feels like would be Zone of the enders(vaguely) i like the head--feels like a rhino beetle
i like the fact that you thought out the function of the bot as a BOSS--i would put taht explanation with the piece if you put it in your portfolio
keep it up --i wanna see more! btw--hows the job market ?
brokencow--tahts a beautiful drawing there--looking forward to a finish

Awesome sketches, cow. And benzo, that robot looks awesome. The only suggestion I would make is to make the arms at the bottom larger. Right now, it doesn't look like they accomplish much, and if they were larger they'd also help balance out the large top more.

i could work on this more, but since i was starting to get hassled here, i thought i best post something...
i came up with this guy before benzo posted his; i think tentacles are just an unofficial theme...
anyway. i was thinking that the primary form of attack would be a volley of metallic shards (which are currently swirling around the tentacles). having disabled his opponent, the bot could then use the tentacles and rotating melting jets to rip them to shreds, "digest" them through the tail portion, and recycle the metal back through the jets. the molten metal would also be temporarily held in place by a magnetic field (which takes the form of the wings seen there).
i'll keep working...

Interesting theme
Benzo> looks quite dark with that white BG, try curving up or add a 30% value BG.
Broken> I'm not sure the little centaur torso thing reads. The design could probably work without it or with something else.
coco> I like those fire plumes and the insectoid tail armour plates. The darkness of the head and its unfamiliar silhuette makes me confused though.

YOU WILL FINISH THAT BY THE 10th OR EVERYONE WILL KNOW THAT YOU FAILED TO FINISH TWO THUNDERDOMES IN A ROW. YOUR REP IS ON THE LINE BROTHER!
(Not to put any pressure on you, but come on, you're so close and I want to see that in color!)
coco- u still up for another? I'm gonna try to pump one out. I bet you're too busy with thesis due in three weeks though.

I'll see what i can do...talk to the job, talk to the girlfriend.

i've done some little sketches and have an idea or two, but i doubt i'll be able to pull anything off soon, what with a full faculty crit and kieth lango coming this week.

Ben! Nice job man.. really original designs you have goin on. I really like the mothership pic. Just shows how the smaller bots were concepted and created, but are less signifficant in the main pic. I find it interresting. Kinda like in the movies LOTR for example. So much detail crafted into things, but get 1 second of screentime or are way inthe background. I'm not saying its a waste, or shame, its quite the opposite.
ive gone and confussed things maybe.
later!
