Hey everyone,

I am stalking this forum for some days now, and I think it`s my turn to post some recent sketchbook stuff. As you can see I`m trying to get into that anatomy thing :D
I am 21 and just started studying design and illustration in germany and I hope to push myself with a sketchbook thread, because I know that I`m not drawing as much as I could and should :D
:mod:

hey there.

I just started painting in photoshop and here are my first studies.

Left - reference

Right - me :D :D :D

wow that's amazing, are those sort of your first studies in photoshop, it's very hard to get those results, especially without much experience (god knows I've tried)

JennyDavis
March 13th, 2009, 06:55 PM
you just started? wow, could've fooled me! great stuff! your life drawings look great and i agree with hypnogiraffe, those photoshop studies are amazing for a first time (and beautiful regardless).

March 13th, 2009, 07:49 PM
thanks a lot to both of you :)

Actually I used photoshop before to color some sketches but I noticed that I`m missing the basics. That`s why I wanted to start painting this way.
I started with the peer project I found in this forum. It helped me a lot doing the first steps in photoshop painting :D

Here are my very first steps and some "colored" sketches I did today

nice stuff, man, good to see that you try to hit art from all sides, good variety of studies. helps a lot to become a balanced artist.

Godd work man, keep going!!

Say, where are you studyingin germany?

DoubleThink
March 15th, 2009, 05:46 PM
Hey man.
I know the photoshop stuff goes really slow in the beginning, but it's worth it in the long run, so stick with it ;-)

That little environment looks pretty damn good to be honest :-)
I love the fish aswell.
Keep them coming :-)

Noro
March 15th, 2009, 09:07 PM
Thanks Gloominati :D you are right. I`m trying to get into this whole digital art stuff, that`s why I want to try everything. And I think it helps a lot^^
ah, and I`m studying in Münster...

( ab nächster Woche im 2. Semester ;) woher kommst du genau? )

DoubleThink - Hehe I know. Sometimes it gets really frustrating :D
I did some more trys on environments but my computer crashed and I didn`t save them :jawdrop:

Tonight I did some quick self sketches and painted a self portait. I think it turned out okay - at least it looks like me and that`s what it`s all about, isn`t it? :D

I think I`m going to do some more studies like the last ones before I try a colored one - because I`m scared xD

yeah ! hallo ! :D

the colors of the environment studies are greatly intense and vibrant !
and the lines are great on the b-man'S !
i know i'm repeating sth. , buuuuuut connect that stuff with 'looking in the mirror', while drawing book-studie-stuff ... that helps me aaalot more to keep things.

Hey hey hey everybody,

it`s been a long time...
I drew a lot for exams, nearly 13 h every day and so my hand started to hurt. I went to the doc and he told me that my hand is simply "over-worked"... I had to take a break, that`s why I wasn`t able to draw or paint for the last 2 or 3 weeks! 2 or 3 weeeeeks! Holy crap I`m so bored and angry, it`s really hard to me. It`s still not that good, so I have to stretch my pause...

This is my Sketchbook I filled in the first two weeks of my semester break. I wanted to do a lot more but my hand, you know :( :( :(

I did a lot of posemaniacs, studies from characterdesigns.com, Bammes, Bridgman, from head. Aaand you will recognize some stuff from some guys here on concept art. Like Algenpfleger or Alex Pascenko, they are great artists and a big motivation to me...

and a lot of mixed stuff, portaits, zoo and cafe stuff. hm yeah.

Sorry for the foto quality, just cant scan that stuff...

Hey Noro,

Lordy, you're working *hard*, aren't you--you're burning it up! The improvements you've made over 6 months are exemplary.

I'm going to mention a few things to keep working on, and it'll make you happy to know that these are things that you're already doing...just keep pushing them:

• Keep it loose. You have a sort of mechanical thing going on; in terms of the planar anatomical studies it helps you gain understanding of form, but in the execution (application of media/marks and some gestures) things get a little stiff. Your anatomical studies over the past couple of months have really improved in terms of addeed flowy gesture--nice. You *get* it. That's half the battle.

Now you need to start letting your media (whatever it is) start speaking. (The latest pencil drawings are definitely starting to show this--but keep pushing!) Getting used to the medium, and feeling it, fighting it, and trying to bend it to your will are natural steps in learning. (We all do it, forever, to some extent!) Now you're a journeyman--you've done a lot of that. Now you need to give yourself up to your media. This is a leap of faith! Allow your media to do that which you can't make it do. That sounds paradoxical, but I'll bet you know what I mean. Some things get defined. Some don't. Others are marks that'll never happen again but say exactly what needs saying. Practice is the only thing that'll bring that around, but as I said, you have NO problem in that department.

• I like the trend in your digital painting, especially in the landscapes. If you haven't yet, go out and get some oils or acrylics and paint from life. Doing photoreal digital painting and/or working digitally from photos can come in handy, but there is absolutely no substituting "real" media.

One aspect that's vital in doing/practicing Naturalistic painting (representation with a focus on natural lighting, form, volume, color, and value) is to NOT follow the truism of "working all over" and NOT "working from general to specific". Obviously, you don't have to use this method all the time, but once you start doing it, you'll recognize its value. Whether it's a still life, landscape--or even a human figure--spend only enough time drawing on your canvas to map out your composition and the large elements. You start by putting your first (well-chosen!) glob of paint down. Then, you work the whole painting by "what goes next to what".

This means that you observe your model/scene and decide whether your next paint blob is: darker/lighter, what its comparative local color or hue will be, and whether it's warm or cool. You can push this a bit and get really dynamic results.

I don't want to snow you in with a lot of ideas, here, but I see you going places, and I wanted to be thorough.

Keep up the good work, and let me know if I can be of any further help!

I'm really proud of you doing this much studying. I really hope you will keep doing these at the same rate cause you've improved so much doing these. You should really put effort to the proportions of the head. It seems like you just put the facial features in somewhere without much thought: always double check everything and measure all the time. This will of course be just a phase that you'll get past if you just keep drawing so it's not that big a problem. One thing that really sticks out is the improvement and the awesome quality of your linework and shading. One thing I'd suggest though: Always draw with a sharp pencil. It's more attractive to the viewer.

algenpfleger thanks maan! glad you like them :)

Pixie Trick :DDD thanks sooo much. Yeah I had a lot of problems with watercolors untill I had a new teacher this year. She is absolutely amazing with traditional colors and showed us how to handle watercolors, acrylics and stuff. Best class I ever visited so far.

Darkside hehe thanks a lot man. You are living in cologne, cool, I`ll visit you there as soon as I got my " Nrw-Ticket ":D:D
I`ll post that watercolor piece in a higher resolution so you can see more details.

Rushlord hehe thanks man. No way, there are wooorlds between me and alge.

Exon-Ion wow, thanks a lot! :D

okay here`s the watercolor piece again. It seems that I`m thinking muuuuch more when doing traditional colors. And I`m more patient, not rushing colors, etc.... Hmm I really have to do that with my digital stuff, too...
and some poop from head. I really got to train that and get out of my comfort zone . cheers!

Elz hey man. Thanks a lot. I`m doin the pages from head pretty quick, 1 hour a page I think. But I should focus more and take my time. I usually dont come back on them later on.

zerdron I just opened a big canvas and zoomed in to do the details with a soft brush first and then with a small hard brush.

Just bought two Ballistic books, pricey but beautiful. Gonna take them away with me to be inspired from. Off on a short trip to my grandmas. :D

That's a really lovely study, her eyes are awesome - but they don't seem bright enough to me - And the one on our left seems a bit bigger than the other. Could be that the other eye has eyelashes that go to a certain point on the iris. (Or im just too picky.)

TheGnoll
March 4th, 2010, 07:01 AM
excellent studies in here, your dedication is paying off already!

If you are struggling with imagination drawing, i think a good thing would be trying to put a different kind of thought in the preliminary stages.Try thinking a gesture in verbs, actions and expressions before even thinking about anatomy, imho a solid gesture must be readable even in its preliminar phase.
That can count for characters too, becoming involved with actual thoughts about who you're trying to represent (from its attitude to some good research for the design).
Starting from a self given topic, like you did on the last character, making him some kind of tribal warrior, helps, but must be backed up with research grounded in reality, be it from wikipedia, movies or anything that can actually help you see what the props you put on the character are and what they look like.Otherwise you end up just getting stuck on rendering, or polishing a picture that doesn't have a solid base.
I imagine it must be hard to keep a balance between observation and imagination studies, but try thinking about them as if they required different thought processes, and as you go on with both, they will merge, i think.
just my 2 cents, but really, excellent studies, great dedication, this is one sketchbook to follow!

rock on!
ciao

dude, really nice studies! you're clearly committed to them and i honestly don't have any critiques for them. If your having trouble with designing characters, i suggest you look at a various cultural references. try to get a sense of what your character might be thinking/feeling, what they should be wearing and why. characters are living beings and they have a whole history that makes them who/what they are. hope that helps man :)

I am much better now, but still feeling it. But life goes on I guess! I have still been lurking around the forums though :D

I will just jump back in with some work from the last 3-4 weeks.

There´s a POWERFUL rendering style going on in there man, you achieve very realistic results, mostly when working from reference. your still life paintings look gorgeous!

anatomy looks spot on solid awesome megaultra goood
BUT
try observational drawings of boring shit like books and trees and vases and shit
your imagined objects really dont match the awesomeness of the anatomy and imagined organisms
and the interaction of your imagined anatomy with the imagined objects... as in people holding things or leaning on or using can be brought up to your anatomy level

EDIT: i take it back trees arent boring
also the lighting in some of the recent ones while ambitious looks too soft and like... idk diluted and odd.. try more solid opaque lighting and blending

That's the idea. Learn the hard way and then everything else is easy. Once you start relying on Ctl Z and being able to move bits about to correct things, you lose the original focus.

I couldn't wait until the kids were old enough for me to get my easel back out.

So... I try to keep the crimson dagger deathline going. Doing well so far I think. Doing more pencils stuff now ( really feels good) ... getting back into loomis because my structure is so bad and it seems that I am "guessing" on proportions rather then knowing about them. So yes, my challenge for this month totally changed - I need to learn structure and proportions more.

Studies from the past days, some anatomy and a random creature. The pirates and a WIP Monster-Character thing. I have no idea where that ones going :D:D

I feel as though you're doing still lives because you think you should and not because you can learn from them. Also, over reliance on digital is going to make your work like anyone else's - smooth and without character. You can do much better.

Noro
January 7th, 2012, 01:43 PM
skishyish - thank you

Black Spot - Thank you for your comment. I am sorry if you think that my works lack character. I rely on the digital mediium most because it`s a time matter for the fields i want to work in. It`s about producitvity, so I have to be able to paint digitally. I started with traditional medium only in the first 2 years of my school, tried tons of different styles and I enjoy realism the most and I try to learn and achieve it. I do still lifes because I enjoy them a lot,and yes I did tons of stilllifes that I didnt apply to personal work but I learned to observe I learned to see colors. And I think failing in this way helped me to learn the way I do. I started to do studies that I can apply to my personal work, but I think it takes some time until you really get that.( for example the blue shimy armor) So yeah, I hope that I can do much better in the future.

Well, christmas kind of kicked me out of my daily routine., But I am back on track and posting more regulary again. Some stuff from the past 2 weeks or so. Did a lot of pencil anatomy studies, but I dont think they are worth showing :P

So things are getting pretty cool for me at the moment. I managed to get my first deathline goal which was to paint for my favorite german roleplay company by the end of january. And it worked out! I did some work for their regular magazine and they offered me a contract. YES! Thats what I wanted, for now ;)
So here is some stuff I did besides my work for them. Some commissioned character and studies ( they are not random, I use them for my comissioned stuff)

Hi. Thanks for dropping in my sketchbook. I must say that your stuff looks pretty cool. I have one suggestion though. I think you should focus more on materials. Right now everything in your paintings looks very similar. Like it was all the same material. I think when you master this you will really awesome. Good luck!
