That's quite the initial dump you have made an entrance with. I especially like the black/white/brown conte studies, and the texture. I would advise compressing the files a bit more if you can in the future, there is no reason some of them should be so big (each on 300+ kb and takes forever to load your entire thread). Selecting 'Save for Web and Devices' and photoshop can fix this, and making sure resolution is no more than 75ppi for internet browsing.
Keep up the work, I'll be sure to check back as you update. :)

JJ McKool: Mmhm I enjoy the looseness of the pen. You bet work on the figures! I've started to go to figure drawing twice a week which is as much as I can on my schedule at this time. However there’s no reason why I can't study from other sources, photographs, anatomy books. Just something about drawing from life, I enjoy it alot more.
Anyways here is my update for today, spent the day working on black and white Gouache paintings, there around 7x10 each. Thought I would try that instead of conte and I'm glad i did!

Was a little lazy on Sunday and Saturday night so this is the result, not a large update =( :assspank:
Had fun watching Azumanga Dio though =D Actually I resently foudn out that youtube has a playlist application to it, I'm haveing lots of fun listening to some OST's of some shows I enjoy.
Listening to music helps me get going if no one else is around me drawing! Actually the sketchgroup this week failed as well, no one came =( Maybe next week!
More pencials less brushpen for a while, suck with creating edges! One (four)of the uploads was a project for my drawing class, we had to draw same still life four times in different value keys.

Hey Dylan, I really like what you have going here. You are going to go very far if you keep up this attitude.
Here are some quick crits, Learn perspective in and out. Do it now, because everything we see is effected by our POV (point of view) this can hold us back if we dont know perspective as well as we ought to. Or it can allow us to play with scenes that would normally be cliche.
When sketching people on the street, you seem to be focusing on their features rather than the shapes that represent them. Let me expand on that, all faces are built around a bone structure that provides planes and angles. These angles when mixed with light create the definition and changes in shadow that allow us to understand that what we are looking at is a 3d object. If you focus on the values and planes (tones and basic shapes) of the face then you will not only train your eye but be able to capture the person quicker. This is why pointillism works, because the right blob of paint in the right place at the right value equals what we see. All we can really see are these streak of light that bounce off stuff and into our eyes. Use lines to express the shape and value of what if bounces off of. Sounds complicated and artsy but it isn't :).
I bet you've heard all this before and are actively doing it as i speak but what the heck we can all use reminders once in a while. In the end I think you've got a nice start here and you draw quite well. But attitude and persistency are what matter the most, and you seem to have it in spades. AKA you got it made kid.

Good to see you're eager and want to draw a lot.
Might want to take a step back and actually examine the stuff you're doing first.
Some proportions on your drawings is really messed up.
The loose lines are good, but try & remember the rules of perspective & other whilest doing this.

Genome: You bet I'm going to get far because I am going to keep up this attitude =) I'm going to figure drawing twice I week so I hope that will help with my proportional issues because I defiantly see how weird some of the proportions are sometimes.
I decided to when I'm on the train or anywhere really to focus more on the architecture since I really want to get perspective down flat! I hope to be able to design really nice environments along with characters someday =)
DoubleThink: Thank you DoubleThink. Yes I see what you mean, I started drawing only with pencil so I can go back and fix things easier. I really love the looseness of ink but, I think I need to learn to rethink things a little more. Thanks for the cri
Anyways my update, gosh I had a good full couple last days, lots of drawing and painting. Two of these are a project we were assigned in painting 2 weeks ago. Remade one of them yesterday though, I defiantly got a definition of an edge on that one. The other one? Well it's all nebulous in some areas, maybe I should of worked it some more but, not sure. I didn’t *shrug* We were supost to have two that have a change in lighting using a landscape collage we made in a box.
Still listening to my Azumanga Diaoh OST haha! My Mp3 player has been broken for longest time and its past its warranty, so I asked my dad if he had one. Turns out he bought one awhile back on sale but rarely uses it. It's very nice! Goes well with my nearly audiophile head phones!
Wow I'm really excited to where the story in Naruto is heading, I read the darn thing every week for years haha! Never been this good!

Hurray! This was our last color chart for my color theory class! I got to admit they do drain me alot, I was working on it for 14 hours yesterday at school thinking. "Oh I can't wait to get home so I can do some drawing. But seriously I got home, ate and I was way too tired to even want to draw. Oh well mixing colors over and over again and comparing them to each other helps alot =) Just a few hours of work on it today so I'm sure I can still draw today :D
The values are off in alot of areas, and I'm not saying my colors were mixed perfectly but they all seem a little cool or warm in some areas. When I scanned it in overall it looked way to cool, thought I would try and correct that by messing around with the channels a tad. I think it worked!
What was the reason the scan looked to cool? I noticed when I make a print of something it tends to look to warm. So perhaps something is happening from the translation from RGB? I'm assuming... I guess prints use CMYK. Can anyone explain this for me? I know I’ve read things before about it but never really looked at it in a way to understand.

Lately I've been feeling I should put in the mix some more "finished" looking studies in the mix of my quick stuff. So I was working on a photo study all day yesterday and quite happy with how it's turning out. Went on a little adventure at night taking photographs in the potentially last snowfall of the season. Which was huge!
I'm looking forward to the anime convention in my town this year, only a month a way. I'm seriously considering setting up a vendor table with the idea of drawing portraits of people and such in a more illustrative type fashion. So I better start experimenting, Ill give Bobby Chiu's way of studying other artists a good shot =)
Anyways a tired looking update, sometimes I wonder where all the time goes.
Will be exciting when I get to the point where I'm studying massive amounts during the day! Some of you people on this site are great, I love your hard work =) Kind of funny how people like Algenpflger love to bash them self’s! But hey! It's a source of motivation for the guy! Anyways the drive to always improve is definitely in him and that's very important to us artists. Right guys?
Sometimes I wonder where all the time goes.

Hi Dylan - thanks for your kind words about my sketchbook stuff! i took a look at your work and can see the clear improvements and your hard work (that is paying off). I think Genome above had some good feedback that will serve you well - to think about shapes - the big, basic ones and the planes before you are sorting out the small details. Believe me, I screw this up all the time but when my drawings and paintings work best, it's when they began very very simply and, as Glenn Orbik says: 'you let the details sneak up on you'.. and go easy on them..
I will check back.. thanks again and thanks for asking me to review you work!

Just a small update today, didn't go to that figure drawing session after all, @$&#%^ Was working on this. Wanted to fire out a sketch trying to figure out the composition before going into a finished drawing. Which I hope to get a fair amount done tonight. The character was basically made from an image I saw relating to Serial Experiments Lain. I really enjoy that anime =)
[Link] (http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=https://honors.rit.edu/amitraywiki/images/7/7a/Lain5.jpg&imgrefurl=https://honors.rit.edu/amitraywiki/index.php/Anime&usg=__r-DMuvGKnHJ6VWLN9Oq8-1PHFUM=&h=450&w=600&sz=48&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=X0QKzTq8kS7_GM:&tbnh=101&tbnw=135&prev=/images?q=lain&gbv=2&hl=en&sa=G)
I hope to figure out what's missing from it while working on the finished drawing, it's missing something key... I'm not sure what o.o I think the values just need more contrast, it looks very grey, but I'm not sure. Fuck something really bugs me when looking at this, maybe its something so basic as the composition... What ever ill just do it and hope I figure it how to fix it =)

Still a long ways to go I just wanted a break from drawing so I thought I would come online and post what I've done so far. I'm... not to sure how I feel about it at the moment. I'm not to sure if I'm just trying to make something look all pretty that's already fundamentally flawed. My minds eye isnt that strong yet XD But I plan to through drawing from my head into the mix of drawing from life now, I feel I'm at the point I need to strengthen my minds eye =)

Having fun working on this one! Went to a private meeting with my painting teacher today asking about what teachers and courses would be good for what I want out of next year, as well asked her to critique this. She says I have a real good sense of atmosphere and space but I'm not too good and defining things. I agree with her fully.
She suggested instead of going out and doing all these little drawings I sit down with a still life and really try very hard to record what I see. I plan to do that right when I get home, going to take a break from this till Sunday and work on still life’s for next few days =)
Any ideas about the values? There not quite there yet.

hi, cool start, I like your lines very much
some crits on the drawing inspired by Lain: push the values, either make the darkest or the lightest point the most interesting point. Don't be afraid to make the background behind the fat guy either much darker or much lighter to give a contrast to the figures.
Some crits on general technique from what I saw from this small sketchbook:
You mainly work with outlines, a searching line that you draw on the paper by observing and in some of the lifedrawings with a block-in method.
But you don't use a method where you understand the figure in 3d and where you construct the body or the head.
With this a construction technique (building the figure out of forms ) you can give your drawings a much better sense of form, perspective and dimension and additionally another style of lines and movement. It also helps a lot to really understand the figure for shading.
Try out the Loomis book "drawing the head and the hands" or maybe "figure drawing for all it's worth", you can download them for free if you search for them.
thank you for that kickass comment in my sketchbook :D

Ronald Liu: Hey thanks man I know what you mean, I was talking to this one artist who was a former employee at Bio Ware, he said to draw things more angularly. He scrippled some organic lines on paper, then some angular lines then explained that its harder to correct organic lines when you mess them up, so start more angular and get the realationships right first, then you can make the drawing feel more organic. It was very helpful advice...

good to see you updatin´ regulary! faces are getting better. i guess that some eyestudies would help you a lot.faces are ok, but the eyes are crap!
the first (self???) portrait is cool, but a softer(darker) pencil could have improved the drawing.

Well dad went camping and took the camera so can't take any photographs. As well I lost my Intuos 3 :davi: Was my fault though see I have been leaveing it in this computer room underneither at the other end of the desk by the wall, and it's been there for a few weeks now hah.
Yesterday I go into the computer room after I came back from figure drawing that night and... the whole room was empty, the tables, computers were all gone and was replaced by someones work desk and a cabinet. FUCKKKKKKKKK!!!!
May get it back but I'm not counting on that.
I'm thinking of buying either a Intuos 4 or a Cintiqu 21x (spelling?) Most likely a Intuous 4, I enjoy not seeing my hand :D
In the mean time I dug up my old Graphire :D The portrait looks blurry, blah.

Big improvement since the beginning. What's it been? Just 6 months or so? That's inspiring.
When you went away from drawing outside contours, you got much better. Drawing stuff by drawing the outside contour is the hard way to draw. Drawing from an understanding of the volumes, shapes, and construction is much easier. Takes study, though.
Good study of muscles and whatnot there. Love to see those.
Keep workin, you got a good thing going here.

Hot models :) I feel for ya :D I've been lucky; all the female models I've drawn recently have been quite... er... nicely put together :)
J/K we know it's all about the drawing when you sit down, and get into it. I would draw a 600 year old elephant if we could get one and get it to pose for us :)
Good work, though. Keep pounding away at it. Something good will happen soon with your work if you keep this up. You'll make a breakthrough and then everything will be peachy. For a while :)

Sorry about the scans, the scanner liked to crop the stuff at the top and I didn't think it mattered enough to figure out how to adjust it.
Were stupid and tend to forget what we want to do, so I'm going to make my self a schedule everyday from now on! I guess it's a personal thing but I still feel it's a positive thing to post it. Doesn't feel negative to me at all.
6-7: Wakeup, eat, shower, warm up drawing.
7-9: Study some drawings
9-12: Break for 20, draw from imagination.
12-3: Eat, Figure draw from reference and imagination.
3-5: Break, hand drawings.
5-10: Go out with friends to see Eva 1.0!!! <3 <3 <3 Do some drawing on train.
10-12: Work on character rotation for Sheridan Portfolio.
12-1: Update on Conceptart.org, write schedule

I used to be alot like Shinji hehe. Most likely why I enjoyed the series so much, it really got inside of Shinji's head.
algenpfleger: Thanks man, I think I should also do more finished stuff as well not just colored sketches, but why is it so hard to do that hah?
Naram Sinha: Haha yeah that was 20 different color combinations of one drawing in acrylic. More detail... I've never really been one for alot of detail but I definitely need more, I need to find a balance. =)

Cool. I haven't really done that... gone out, sat in a crowd, and drawn... it's usually a lot more controlled--a session with a nude model.
But that's something I hope to find time to do, as well. Not much action at work for drawing; just a cubicle and a computer screen :D :D :D
Anywho... good work here in the latest update.
I would like to see some face studies, though, as I feel the faces you're drawing now lack depth... the features almost seem like decals stuck to a balloon in place of real faces. Hence, the need for face studies :D
(Hence... $1000 word. hehe.)

The man with no name: It's alot of fun! But I think I've had to unlearn alot of things becuase of it. When I started to get serious with drawing I went out and drew lots of people on the train. However I could not really make any sense of what I was drawing and just drew a bunch of symbols. Well alot of habits were picked up that I persistently try to get away from
Jatherip: Hehhehe were a generation with to much information that can just distract us. Ill work on the lines man, I want really clean awesome lines... I doreally love sketchy stuff though, but only when the person knows what the hell they are doing! I will do some digital stuff but I think I should focus mostly on pencials to boot for now :D
Anyways I didnt draw much of anything today was super unproductive. I slept most the day then just read some old letters to my self and friends. Thought about some things, took a walk. Then went to figure drawing. So please kick my ass hard! Drew the figure free hand and focused on drawing one clean line.
Tommrows going to be a really great day! Ill end today with some room interior drawings :D
Check out Geoffrey Klepeis page please. I can't thank him enough for how much he's been helping me lately with drawing. http://www.geoffreyklepeis.com/
Edit: Oh fuck I forgot, I was having a hard time rendering her butt and abdomen. I kept destroying the depth. Geoffrey erased it and did a demo explaining some concepts. He was explaining how I'm trying to copy what I'm seeing way to much and how I should try more to reconstruct it in my mind and articulate something that just makes sense. That's what the real goal is. Told me not to really worry about mark making, do what's easiest for now since rendering seems to be a weaker point for me. Talked to me about how not to render things to structurally no straight lines, everything will be curved, nothing is parallel. So I have not earned this remarks people! Geoffrey did say the drawing was solid... just my rendering sucks ass!
I'm going to give it my fucking all today!!!!!!!!!! yeahhh boiiiii! Going to render some niceeeee stuff!

Uh oh, spagettios lol... perspective in that room drawing :D
Setting up two point perspective is really pretty easy... you don't even need to put in formal vanishing points... you just have to be aware of it when you do a room like that.
I like the approach in the girl drawing... the water-colory thing.
More like the 3D rendering, though. That showed some improvement. Forget value for now; learn form :)

Hey guys something has been bugging me alot lately and it just would not hurt to get it off my chest. I'm pretty late I never drew at all when I was a kid but I love it now, honestly it's the only thing in my life I can say I've ever stuck to. (Self confidence was horrid as a young one)
Found this site a year ago and began lurking. Seeing all these amazing artists and seeing what they were all doing got it in my mind that if I drew, at the bare minimum just drew. I would get better. Around the same time I started my first year in art college, I made what i could out of it but, I was disenchanted towards it. Mostly because it was just a bad art school in regards to what I WANTED. (For starters they were basically against life drawing)
So I decided I would just go to a different school that would give me more of what i wanted (I remember it being hard for me to even come to this decision frankly I was scared of what it could mean. (?) Decided Sheridan would be a nice choice around 4-5 months ago.
There's a voice in side me though telling me that's not what I really want, regardless of anything I don't want it. It says I would be doing a disservice to my self if I went to school and studied art. I would never be all I want to be if I do.
Accepting this is nerve racking for me, even writing this is emotionally draining but I think that's the beauty of it. I feel there's a big lesson to be learned in moving out and doing this crazy journey on my own. A lesson I would not learn in school, a lesson I'd put off for 4 years and there's no fucking reason to do that. No reason to wait.
Honestly common sense tells me going to school is a great idea for almost anyone. But it's just not for me. Anybody relate to this? Any stories? I want some closure :asspat:

i totally hate school. i have to go there from 8 am til 5 pm, and i hate it! at least i can draw abit in my lessons :D i always look froward to the weekend ^^. i think you should stay in school, i even heard that education is an andvantage for creating art...not sure about that, but being educated is a good think. and think of it again: how long do you think your gonna live and which tiny part of this time will you be in school (i know, my english sucks too much to explain this properly.....)...i hope you got what i meant!

I had the same type of thoughts back when I was considering even GOING to art school several years ago. (And I do mean SEVERAL XD)
So guess what? I didn't go. And many years later, I'm not sure it was the right decision.
On the one hand, I didn't get the art training I wished I could have had up to this point. On the other hand, it really hasn't hurt me in terms of what I ultimately want(ed) to do. At this point, I want to become an animator. And honestly, I see a window of opportunity to become one... with my computer/3D skills and some improved drawing/draughtmanship... in a relative short amount of time, now.
I went to school for Computer Science, which in a strange way has opened windows into the arts (drawing) for me. I will be studying at an atelier of sorts beginning in January... and see where that takes me. I may be still years away from being any sort of "good" at drawing, but the opportunity is there.
I guess what I want to tell you is--don't worry about the opportunities. As long as you continue your studies, you will find them.
And yes, I hate school too :) It's a draining experience, but it definitely gives you a leg up.

Jatherip: I understand what you mean, art school is a wonderful place trust me! You can make alot ut of it! :) I hated high school too ='( Sadly I didnt draw at all in highschool so it was even worse.
P sage: Thanks for the advice it means alot. Here is my crazyist, biggest most amazeing dream right now. I want to make something new, something refreshing. A comic, a moive a show. I don't know. I want to play a large roll in the art department though. I also want to teach people, I really want to know my craft inside out and be able to give back alot of knowledge to people. I want people to reconize me as an artist and know my name. A happy, passionate, down to earth artist. Basically everything all the people I look up to are.
The cool thing is I can be that last part right now!
Thanks you two, I was freaking out a little bit last night. I'm learning not to do this because it's never a good thing and just stresses me out! But when things mean alot to me or are affecting me greatly I sometimes forget to relax.
I decided I will make my portfolio and apply just to keep my doors open for now. Ill stay liveing at home for now though, it does give me alot of oppertunity to draw all day. Like today! I just chilled out all day and drew, looked for photos, looked at artists, browsed CA, listened to music. I decided to just upload what I did today and this week end for the long pose figure drawing =) Im takeing an online course for character design with Steven Silver. It's realllly good and helpful! I'm working out my first assignment but hmm ill figure it out, I don't like it at all yet.
All in all a great day and tommrows going to be just as productive and awesome =)
I'm really enjoying the Haibane Renmei OST expetually the off vocal version of Blue Flow.

Bendragon: Thanks man, I need to start mixing up alot more environment drawings as well though. I love drawing characters, but it's totally great to draw characters inside an environment. Bet it's even better to see your drawings move, inside an environment :O
Yes... I love SEL, meant alot to me, enough I decided I wanted to play it into my own name online :geekg: Can't wait for the series Despera. It's being made from all the same big guys that made SEL
P Sage: Wooo ya! I love loose drawings! Maybe that's partly why I'm not getting cleaner? I don't want it enough :steph: All I need to do is learn to clean up my loose drawings, not necessarily draw clean to begin with. Sketching is just ideas and fun, I don't need to just be able to drawing amazing things effortlessly. Lets fight and wrestle the drawings!
Hanny: Thanks!!!! The studies help greatly <3
Today I figured out that pupils dialate and there's alot of stuff to that... One interesting fact is it's generally more attractive when another persons pupils are dialated. Pupils dialate and contract due to a number of emotions, drugs or amount of light entering the eye. Yeah some stimple thigns but I never really considered it!
Starting to figure out my chracter more for Steven Silvers first project and I decided I want to travel down to Los Angeles Nov 20-22 to attend the CTNexpo. I'm going to draw as freaking much as possible in my sketchbook and soak up as much knowledge between now and then becuase I want to show a bunch of people my drawings, meet some professtionals, get as much insight out of them as I can, maybe make some more art friends? I'm guessing it would cost over $1000 USD for one weekend but I don't care, seems like an amazeing opertuinity. XD

I agree with everything in your post, except for the trailing "XD"... that was certainly uncalled for :nohope:
It's good to see you doing more life drawing (as always)... make sure to take care with proportion. I know; it's my battleground right now, too. It helps to see the body as a series of overlapping shapes. Foreshortening, overlapping shapes, and flow seem to be able to bring the figure together best--and it's hard (at first) to coordinate the three. When you do, you have a figure that's proportional and that looks right.
Hope you can scrape together the required funds for L.A.
Oh yeah. And XD to you too

Thanks for the comments everyone. Alright I've been down for past few days, not only sick but just feeling empty, only doing some bare minimum things that are really easy for me to do. Doesnt even feel like a work out just like a walk in the park everyday. Some life drawing... some doodles... then a whole lot of nothing productive.
I just hate to see my self giveing in to these empty emotions that go round inside my head time and time again. It's not just me though, it's so many people that feel this way and only do what's the easiest becuase motivation is just gone, it's drained.
I'm snaping out of it right naOoooOOWWWW, I control my self I can push my self to do what's hard and work my butt off. Looking good here!
The figure studies are looking really nice! The only thing though is that your lines tend to be a little messy looking. Try not to shade using zigzags and more with straight lines while lifting up the pencil after each stroke.

drd: You can :D You can get dedicated too, just find it in you! I need to find it in me to go even more!
Kim_bot: My lines are messy, it's a lack of confidense and control. Alot of the times I'm trying to go over lines because either I think they are right and I want to darken them some more, or I'm unsure about the drawing and ill get it all messy. Ill try to shade that way, it's hard but looks so much more organized!
I actually have not watched Haibane Renmai or Texnolyze yet completly. I tottally plan to! I absolutely loved SEL though. I can't wait, the main crew that made SEL is makeing a new anime at the moment which is in pre production called "Despera"
Man it's a strange feeling when you basically completely missed a day. I've been sleeping on and off with short episodes of wakefulness for last 18 hours. I told my self yesterday I should focus on getting better so I can go crazy again. But figure drawing is tonight so I have to go to that!! Ill be doodeling on the way there and back too. Want to fill up all the pages in my sketchbook that I feel are a little pointless and empty right now. There is a few.
Damn I forgot to take a photo of my little cousin that I drew yesterday. Ill be seeing them tommrow though so ill just get it then.
It's winter!!! Snow is awesome. I remeber wakeing up late last night and seeing all the snow falling with the light that the falkes caught from the street lamps. It was pretty.

Winter?? It's not supposed to be winter yet! What about autumn? You crazy Canucks and your October winters :canadian:
Tremendous work is still needed in the faces. I would work on either bodies or faces but not both at this point. You need to isolate these activities in order to understand them.
But some of the things I'm learning right now at the school (while I'm here) would suggest that you start doing studies on how to create two-D forms on a page, and then 3-D forms before moving into figure drawing.
My approach in my thread will change significantly because of just these last two days at this school.
Hope you're feeling better and that the weather up there doesn't spoil your mood :)

I was at this sports store the other day getting some ski pants and I noticed the girl who was at the cashier's name was "Dylanea". I realized "Hey that's my name on the internet! .... :D"
I guess that super long sleep cured me. Was hanging out with my little cousins family yesterday, got some drawing in, came home and some how I ended up watching the last 15 episodes of Evangelion.
I gota work harder though, I need to work alot harder. I useally update when I feel I have 8-9 hours of work to show at least and lately I've been updateing every 2 days. I know it my sound crazy to you but I think the only people that are working hard are working 12-16 hours a day. Doesnt need to be drawing, but they are working.
Occationally ill hit a day or two where I work like this, and I pat my self on the back when I do, but it needs to be consistent.
Jatherip: I'm going to draw like mad just for you (well mostly for me), thanks for kicking me in the ass when I need it T___T
P Sage: Thanks P sage, I'd say I'm focusing alot more on faces these days it's alot of fun actually. Ill ask my family and friends to pose for me while I draw them. hey, nice progress in here!
Maybe you wanna draw a little slower and see what happens. I noticed that looking at your portrait/head drawings. Maybe take out the speed and really observe the form, the contours and maybe find small spots that can make the drawing more interesting. Like where the hair crosses the contour of the head or smth. Hope you know what i mean^^ btw, the same can be applied to shading, no need rushing thru.

Hopefully you had fun drawing people at the airport.
The faces though, man. Really brutal :embarrassed: ... sorry to say. (sorry if that sounds harsh)
Big shapes first... then smaller stuff.
"The amateur is tyrannized by detail." - Barnstone
I guess what I mean by that (if it sounds cryptic) is to make sure the big shapes are right first.
I try to think about it like this: If I get at least the shape and dimension of the head right, and the planes of the head and face right... it's going to look about 85 percent right, no matter how crappily I draw the face.
At that point, I just have to do a good job of rendering the forms on the skull, and then (finally) go in and try to get the details right.
I think you know what eyes and noses and mouths should look like; it's the whole that I'm talking about.

Last few days have been good and I'm tottally in the groove again! For last 3 days I've gotten my self up after sleeping for 4 hours fairly easily. Ill crash later on in the day though but ill just need a quick nap to get my energy back :rocker: Lots of drawing yay!
P sage: Figured out this morning that I havea hard time drawing a sphere with contruction lines wraping around it and going though it. I'm guessing that's a large reason why alot of my stuff sucks. I need to work on STRUCTURE!!! :O
Krato: I try to do that all the time, I just suck! :D
Jatherip: Teheheh, we will see... I kind of fell out of my I love digital phase. I`m in I love drawing in my sektchbook phase.

Hey, thanks for dropping by my SB!
I think I'm already seeing improvement in your sketches! What I would like to see more of though is some really detailed complete drawings; you do a lot of quick studies, but I wanna see you do some drawings (or paintings) where you just sit with it, spend a hell of a lot of time on it, and just carry it through and make it as realistic as possible.
I'm not saying that studies and quick sketches are bad...but for me, they're kind of like homework. They help me learn the basics (proportion, anatomy, etc), but the complete drawings are where you actually utilize knowledge that you pick up while doing your studies- they're a bit like exams if you will. And I think that you need both to really complete your knowledge (though I'm not a fan of tests IRL, especially essay ones)
Anyways, keep up the good work!

Kim_Bot: Thank you for stoping by =) I can feel a longer drawing comeing up. I only do those ever so often when I feel the inspiration. I do studies that are 140 min in length but I've never gone so far as like 8 hours. I should I should.
P Sage: Yay structure drawings. Lets actaully learn to contruct the head first!!!!!!
Adrian: Thanks Your right I havnt been doing consturction enough.
Seems like such a long time since I've updated. I havnt been sleeping much though, had a day where I didnt sleep and the rest have been 3-4 hours of sleep a night. Ill nap during the day when I crash though. Afternoon naps are the best.
I litterally passed out on the bus on the way home yesterday. I've always woken up when I nap on bus but this time I overslept my stop 10 min. Was interesting, I close my eyes and the world shuts off for 20 min I wake up and I'm 10 min past my stop. Was like on off switch.
It's honestly not really much but I felt very proud with this gesture I did in class yesterday so I thought I would share it =)

Good head/shape studies and really good figure drawing stuff. I'm still seeing the wonk-face stuff there; seems to be a disconnect between the head studies and the portrait studies.
But one of these days, the light switch will click on and you'll have a big improvement there. Just keep studying it. Understanding is coming.
A lot of good work there. A LOT of mileage in this last update. Thumbs up.

You guys have quite a hard working sketch group going on! Brilliant to see! As you probably read in my sketchbook, I looked back on my drawings from 2006 and man... they suck.... HARD! I would say the key to improving is to draw a lot of course and keep drawing as you are... and think hard as in analyze your work. If you can always identify things you need to work on, you can always rely on yourself for crits and that'll mean you can keep developing.
Anyway... some crits from me... I think some of your characters are a bit stiff. So you could try some gestural drawings. Dont think about details with this, try get motion into your pose. These might be little thumbnail squiggles but the key is giving the pose balance and movement so it looks natural and not stiff.

I look at it this way:
I'm glad to have CA.org and the support people provide.
That said, if CA disappeared (lord forbid) I would not lose a single smidge of desire to learn how to actually do this "magic" we call drawing.
A CA sketchbook, to me, is a great resource for plotting progress and keeping track of what is learned. Being able to interface with all you knowledgeable people is really a bonus and a treat as well... the feedback can really be very helpful.
One thing I will never do is allow the liveliness of my little SB dictate my desire to continue. I've been away from the board for two days, but not being able to draw for those last two days has been like someone holding my head underwater.
Hopefully you haven't lost your desire to draw, and we'll continue to be able to support you.
Have fun with that blog! But keep drawing!

And where did all my crazyness go? What is this sleeping 7-9 hours a night? Ill set my alarm every night to wake me up after 4 hours but I always end up going back to sleep becuase I'm tired.
I need someone to slap me across the face and tell me how it is!

Hi Dylan
I'm not sure why people study from photographs; I'm especially unsure after what I learned from Mentler.
In a photograph it is all too easy to NOT see the third dimension, because a camera is not designed to depict the third dimension. In fact, it is expressly designed to take (what amounts to) a distorted view from a single point in space and project it onto a flat surface.
When we see with our eyes, we have depth perception; it's automatic. Therefore, what we see with our eyes is much different than what we see in a photograph... but it's our mind that interprets the photograph as dimensional.
When copying the photograph--if done without thinking about volumes--that sense of depth is easily lost, because you're copying lines, blobs of color, etc.
You almost need another layer between yourself and the photograph; you need to be conscious of the difference between the photograph and what your mind is perceiving. That way, you can take cues from the photograph (reference) and build the structure on the paper just as if you were drawing from life.
This is why Mentler suggests trying to "flip" the image (horizonallly) in your mind when working from photos--it forces you to take that step and actually think about the volumes in space. Otherwise, it's too easy to miss that stuff and your drawings look stiff and distorted.
In other words--there are more steps to working with photographs than the typical beginner/intermediate student will do to work with a photograph correctly. You may see Vilppu working from photos; but don't underestimate the importance of HOW he works with them; he builds up forms after laying in the action lines.... he uses boxes that show the forms in space. He's thinking dimensionally when using photos.
I think that it's MUCH too easy to (when working mostly from photos) miss the step of thinking dimensionally, and going straight toward trying to make an accurate copy--using lines, measuring angles, etc.
With a painting or another person's drawing (master works usually) there's not the problem of distortion (unless it is intentional...) that the camera gives you. So it's much easier to learn (IMO) from master works than from the camera.

Yo man! You are back! No more dicking around OK?!?!?!? Keep up the pace cause it will pay off big time, believe me! Someone has been watching the ChiuStream lol :P I recognize the study!
On your animation... the start is very slow, it looks like its floating too much and it stretches in mid air. That can work for really fast movements but not here. You want to use the stretch after the ball squashes on the floor. See Richard William's Animators Survival Kit book for all your animation needs (seriously good book). So dont stretch the ball in mid air. Try keep it a regular ball shape when not many forces is pulling/ stretching it big time (eg/ in mid air). A trick is to stretch the ball just when it contacts with the floor, this is a trick to help sell the 'contact.' Then you get the squash... anticipate it and hold it for a few frames on the ground before the ball is off again and when it flies off again, give it a stretch but then when its off in the air again... keep it a regular shape.

Keep this thread up, will ya? ;)
Cheers.

I have to agree with some of the others and say slow down, pay attention to what you're doing and retain what you've learned. You have a lot of potential, so it's time to stop fartin' around and take your skills to the next level. There's some really nice work in here, but since this sketchbook is nearing its first anniversary, the overall improvement should be more evident. C'mon man, show us what you can REALLY do! ;)

Doncam: Hah thanks man! It's actually a few degrees above freezeing right now and I find that kind of weather wonderful. It can get very cold but right now something called a "chinook" which is a warm wind from the mountains is blowing makeing it warm!
Alextooth: Thanks bud!!!
Scribble King: I agree to. I think I am on the right track with what I'm doing for the time being. I mean I do spend 3 hours on these painting belive it or not haha! Just will take some work before I can take them farther.
Witcrack: Thank you very much I will keep this thread up, see you again!
Bendragon: Thanks for the encouragement man makes me feel very good! NO MORE DICKING AROUND FFF-YAAAA. I hit up Richard Williams stuff yesterday also pirated his DVD's hehe. I'm gona study it very closely.
Imaginary: Hey thanks man, don`t worry you may have not kept it up but dude you can always start right now and just keep on going. I mean Randis on this site said there was a time in his life where he completely stoped drawing and painting for a whole freaking year. Talk about loseing it! But he`s back and just keeps going and going.
Here is my update for today and yesterday was gona update yesterday but decided to just mush it all into tonight
I drew a portrait today of the same black women I did a lifedrawing last week that I was VERY happy with actually can`t wait to show you all tommrow :D 2 more studies and a fail study that I gave up on of the bust. Some drawings and more animation :D
Cheers!

Ah the classic ball bounce - never done it in 2d drawn before - in Maya it's easy as hell lol - Nice start though :)

Im liking the studies bro! Theresa few odd anatomy but thats why you gotta keep doing them! The ball is looking better. Though I think towards the end you should vary the timing more. The first two bounces is timed well but then the last ones feels like they should have less frames in there. Think of the ball containing 'X' amount of energy and each time it bounces it looses more energy and so cant move as much and overcome gravity. So towards the ball should bounce quicker exponentially until it stops.
And if you want it to feel really bouncy, try squashing the ball more and stretching it when it just makes contact with the floor and when it leaves the floor. What I meant before about keeping the shape regular applies for when its in mid-air and not having a physical object affecting its shape.

Alextooth: Thanks, can't wait to see how it turns out.
Bendragon: Thanks for pointing that out I did not see it. Thought I would try drawing a non rubbery ball this time just something moderatly hard.
Hooray we are now off that horrible page that is page 8 to much stuff on there to load. Here is a life drawing I worked on this weekend. I'm quite happy with it.

Awesome studies bro! Keep that up! With the last ball bounce, I think it spends too much time in contact with the floor. You could take a few frames out of that. Maybe put some of those on one frames.

Bendragon: Ya I actually didnt think of shooting it on ones actually. Ill keep that in mind next time.
A small update but I haven't been lazy which is good! Just havnt documented anything really, been oil painting again woo ill get onto photographing that... Been pushing my self alot harder now. I'm not on alot of sleep.
A girl I'm designing for a very short cut out animation. And a painting I did of the girl before I came to this. I thought she was to young in the painting.
And another ball animation. Did this in photoshop. Gota do it again it looks weird how fast its falling after the first contact. As well I have no idea where that dot came from couldn't find it in my layers.

Nice! The animation is looking better! Im noticing your characters are looking a bit the same. Not sure if you are drawing the same person but their faces look quite similar. Maybe try some studies of faces to break out of the stylization.
