Today's topic is: Character: Street Thug(s)
Rusty Red Robot
December 13th, 2003, 03:56 AM
Oh man, this topic was too perfect. I had a rough sketch lying around (like, only head and torso outline kind of rough) that I didn't know what I wanted to do with. So I just added some stuff, and here it is. Still very rough, though. And I apologize for the legs being cut off . . . I went off the edge of the paper.

Perhaps this boy is to polite and well clothed to be a "street thug". (pencil, 40 min)

Carlo_Julian - Good composition and point of view. I see how you take advantage of the paper color + light crayons.

Some comments from the peanut gallery:
Rusty Red: i like the concept and the cleanness of the image. Feels like there's tension on the chain.
ChickenNinja: I like the fabric and the pose. The marker feel works well. Good stylization.
Carlo_Julian: What medium is that? It looks great.
Gallon: I'm gonna have to second the motion that the thug from the past is the favorite.
Dementist: I have no idea why, but your drawing makes me think "...if a there was a thug in 'Alice in Wonderland'..."
Jeano: What was your inspiration in this piece. There seem to be some deeper themes that I am curious about. The setting, the garb...
roger: Dang man, he looks real. Any reference? I love the nose and the ears. Such character..

Siiiiggggh... I gave up on this one, can you tell? Wasn't a waste however, I am becoming much better at setting up, composing, sketching... and the list goes on. I've seen alot of improvement in myself since I've started this DSG, so far I'm 10 for 10, DSG posts and days that is.
Here we go:

Cool, thanks for checking it out! glad you liked it, and again, thanks for the compliments. I use animation pencils (I have a traditional animation background) - sanford brand col-erase (erasable coloured pencils) They are what most animators use...they dont smudge as bad as graphite and have a real nice feel.
thanks again
Mike
