Ok, I always say that I'm going to get in but I never do... this time I am in no matter what - mid-terms be damned! Here's a super quickie - I just got done reading some Solomon Kane stories and thought that Puss as Kane might be fun - I didn't know about adding a human headed staff for him though - maybe

shannanigan
March 8th, 2009, 11:10 PM
So hoping a little anthro is going to be acceptable.

I know any all-out cat I might try is gonna end up like Puss from Shrek. So I'm going in this direction instead... LOL!
The coat design is completely wrong for the top hat... so ones gonna have to change.

Hendric VII
March 8th, 2009, 11:13 PM
Yeah, that would be a great point for clarification. I was going for a sphinx cat look. How much anthro are we allowed? Or just as long as we go for "realism" as opposed to cartoon?

Of course cartoon isn't out! What better round for a cartoon style than puss in boots? :]

Yeah, anthro is okay, but keep at least some reference to being a cat. :P

Keep in mind some stories have the Puss in Boots as female, too!

Also, I totally forgot about Shrek. Woops. :P

Hendric VII
March 9th, 2009, 12:17 AM
Troubadour I kinda like it - it reminds me of some stuff that Dave McKean did for this book Varjak Paw - I think your sketch has some real wild feral energy. Cool!

Shannanigan yeah - my pervy brain thought of the female version first but like you said - I can anticipate a parade of them. I like how rakeish your sketch is.

Ostrander I like the happy cat! I can't do happy or upside down. You make me jealous on so many levels!

Ain't that the truth. This brings back memories of the Plague Doctor round where the doctor had to be covered because, you know, she was around people with the Bubonic Plague. Next thing you know you see two pages of topless women with masks and black capes. :p

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting to this site. After seeing all the creative work going on here and the skill to aspire for I thought I'd give it a go. I usually do contests over at imagine fx, but love the character and creature creation subjects especially.

Please post crits and comments as I am trying to really improve involving color ,composition etc. Just drawing doesnt cut it anymore, I want to focus on what I usually dont.

Thanks and Im glad to be here. Worked this up in painter and would love to hear your crits and or comments, Thanks

March 9th, 2009, 08:52 AM
Spotted this topic right before I left for work last night and sketched this up - I think I'm going to go with a kind of classic portrait set after the story. I ran out of room in my sketchbook, so I'll have to think of a more interesting pose and add the rest of his body :D

Update, just getting a feel for lighting/colors. I'm going to have the sack full of rabbits at his feet.

Oh boy. I should probably prepare myself for an anthro-soft-porn blowout... no wait. For a second I confused this place with deviantArt. Whew!

I'm tempted on doing a classic cute cat illustration, but I might try and think of something completely different.

updated my scribble to a proper sketch

614576

My cat loves to sleep on and in things -- my lap (of course), boxes, books, shoes, and, if I wore 'em, probably boots as well. She also tears around the house like a mad thing occasionally, obviously acting out some fun feline fantasy full of action and adventure and invading space mice or sumthin'.

So here we have my cat as Errol Flynn, buckling that swash and derring that do.

Errol Feline? (urgh!)

I wanted to throw this in to make sure that I couldn't waffle on going through with this! Initial idea was to do a Shaolin/Wushu type puss. I hope that I can convey that in the end. Please feel free to comment and critique as I sure could use it. I'm struggling with makind him/her (could be either at this point) look more feline than human. If anyone has suggestions please let me know!

Great start so far, especially looking forward to Sentinel's and Masque's but am excited to see all of them!

Thanks,
Ian

EDIT::: Sentinel that update looks fantastic!
SECOND EDIT::: On second thought I may just develop the initial sketch and do a more descriptive front on pose. . .

I have a question, being new to these challenges. From a character development point of view, is it better in these challenges to do a model sheet type of depiction of the character or to put the character into a situation?

I see a lot of both after looking through the past CHOWs so I guess it really doesn't matter. . .? :geekg:

what?

According to my meticulous calculations, the daylight savings has changed so your deadline is wrong. Actually it's according to THIS site (http://wwp.eastern-standard-time.com/), but you should change your deadline to say GMT -4 instead of GMT -5 anyway. ;)

scribble -> sketch, above

@ ianruff -- can't speak for everyone but it's typical to present your character as a single figure in a fashion that best illustrates the essential character aspects as you conceive of them. Model sheets would be interesting as WIP material, though, I'm sure. Oh, and BTW, don't forget about the CHOW 3/4 figure rule -- we gotta see at least three-fourths of the entire figure.

Trying out an Egyptian/Bast theme for this one. Still working on the legs, and boots/shoes/whatev for that matter.

Edit: Updated. Removed one of the kopeshs to make him a little less warrior like and added a little smirk. Also added ankleguards and leg wraps for "boots".

Particular awesomeness to Pseudocognition, jread, flimi (oh my), ostrander (love that last one), tomnoy (awesome sketches).

I think I've got the look I'm going for now just trying to nail down a pose for this feller. I have to say that my daughter crushed me earlier when she looked at one of the sketches and said "Daddy are you drawing Tigress (from Kung Fu Panda)?" Doh! Man, oh well I guess she has a point. . . :dad:

Just saw there are other western themed PiB's out there but what the hey it's just a quick idea. Yup you're right..it does indeed, but I had a background in mind that would bring the western back in cactus lovin' style :P...oooh and some purty spurs too.. ;) Maybe I should go with the Noir stylee though? Drats to sick to think clear...

My favorite western one so far is jread's - I think you've managed to capture all the qualities of Puss in Boots, the toughness, the tricksyness, the mysteriousness. Really cool character!!

flimi - that's some really nice shading... and one REALLY fat cat. I'm a little confused as to why the elbow dimple is there. Does the cat have short fur or long fur? maybe just a few fur strokes at the edges would help clarify. If it has long fur, the dimple would probably be covered.

monkeybread - definitely thinking film noir. Nice take on it!

ianruff - nice take on it, he has character. He seems a little too honest for the Puss in Boots that I know of. Puss is a trickster! Maybe it's that smile, it's too wide or something.

sekino - nice! I love the expressions. And the mouse/giant trying to explain XD

baxter-e - cool theme, but he seems more like a warrior than a trickster

good work everyone! Too much competition for me to start this round I think X_X. Good luck to you all.

A most appreciative lulz to surfacemonkey for the Tabby boots and surprisingly accurate cat stance.

Lulz indeed ;D

Here's a quick sketch for this CHOW. I highly doubt I'll finish it as turning this in to my instructor in lieu of the actual assignments might garner some harsh looks and lecturing.

I'd still really like to know what everyone thinks, though. It's always nice to have one's glaring insufficiencies pointed out to them. :D

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/ltaction/CHOW151-2.jpg

If the two pairs of eyes staring at me from the window (my two feline roommates) are telling me anything...it's to do this challenge!

Great artwork already and yes you're all too fast! Sheesh!

Hendric VII - As soon as I saw him I thought Kane myself! >:D Watch the disjointed tail action and you'll be good.
shannanigan - Really nice start! That costume is great!
tomagnetti - Nice to see you here! (Soon we'll rule the place!:ninja++: ) The tail needs to be longer and watch the perspective of the boots themselves. Great job so far!
Jska - Nice char sketches! He's lovable! Waiting to see more!
surfacemonkey - Great start! You are going with the ninja right?
Sentinel. - Beautiful char! Awesome use of color and mood! This is one tabby not to mess with!
masque - Great work so far! I love the idea of the dreamer. Brilliant!
sony - Great start! Loosen her up a bit, she's quite stiff at the moment.
mimer - I just had to say, he's adorable! (And a little pissed off I think! :) )
kovah - Good start! Watch your anatomy especially around the pelvic area.
Espenboi - It's funny how games can influence our art. Nice work so far! I'm playing Burnout Paradise so unless my cats driving...I got nothing.
sone one - Love the boxer angle! The perspective is done very well to complement the char. Really want to see more!
dirkvandulmen - Great look to him! I really like the cartoon feel and shadowing this one has.
N-man - He looks rather Seuss-ian! Great start!
Tommoy - Nice sketching so far.
Dribble - So far so good! Not enough to crit yet.
FAST ART - The one on the bottom, I think, has the most potential. Great design as usual! :teeth:
jread - So far this is my favorite! I absolutely love this guy! Especially the face and tail. 8)
Baxter-E - Great start on this one! Can't wait to see more!
flimi - OMG! This is awesome! I love the personality you gave him! "What? Don't all cats wear these? I believe these are in style." :tihi:
Ostrander - Great storybook look to this feline! Very nice!
bara - Nice concept here. Great design work. He kinda looks like a four-armed cat-like creature from a game I cannot remember as of now...
Sekino - Great linework and attitude! Love those boots!
Pseudocognition - I love this interpretation! Great kitty rendering! Unfortunately, I think the description says boots are required. Waiting somewhat patiently for more!
ianruff - I love your char style! He looks like he means business! Can't wait to see more!
MJ Alcazar - So far so good! Nice pose and char design. Very sassy!
monkeybread - One, I hope you fell better. Two, I thought the same thing, Film Noir, that would be preaty cool. The thing I noticed is the initial pose obscures your whole cat.
Troubadour - I also have a black cat! Arent they great! Especialy in the dark...at night...waiting for you near the stairs...:^^;: I like where your going with yours! Love the eyes!
KleeWyck - Nice sketches so far! I like the action of the left one. Roll the shoulders a little bit to match the weight of the axe swing.
Lt Action - Great sketch! I love the weapon-work you have! He's a little stiff, just loosen him up a bit.
daestwen - Beautiful start! I love the fact that he/she is playing with the boots! :teeth:

Now I have to go and work. Here kitty kitty kit...WHOAA!!! (Chash!!!) DAMN STAIRS!

I wanted to do a very traditional puss in boots, so....

Here's pass #1. I think I may actually even like it :P

Sassy Red boots... HOT! :D

I started "inking" in the details... can I still call it that when its all digital? LOL!

So my first sketch was random mix of 1700's fashions... I decided to go all out with the earlier more "Revolutionary War" time and changed his hat (which I need to change again... needs a tricorne hat). I felt the pompadour "hair" of the first sketch wasn't right with the costume change, so I updated the face shape. Hes a Bobcat now, which is rather appropriate since hes coming across a little smarmy. :D

Still thinking about the background...

Yup you're right..it does indeed, but I had a background in mind that would bring the western back in cactus lovin' style :P...oooh and some purty spurs too.. ;) Maybe I should go with the Noir stylee though? Drats to sick to think clear...

I definitely think you should go with the film noir style, there are already a few westerns but no film noir puss! I also thought 'PI' when i saw your WIP...its a cool and unusual angle, go with it! :)

thanks for the comments guys, I shall try and get some feedback time later after work :)

Thanks! Hehe a case of, didn't know what I had when I had it...I have kept on with the Noir theme....just trying to figure out how to showcase a little more of my kitty (A little hard since it wouldn't be noir without the shadows)

Love your chosen colour palette by the way. Your dude somewhat reminds me (in a great way) of the main character off Oddworld Stranger's Wrath. Looking forward to seeing the polished piece!

I kinda agree but her eyes were addressing the viewer staring right at us before, which gave the character a pompous slightly 'upper class' snobery, I think the eyes should look at the viewer. Great Speedy work there.

Right now I just have to say that Sentinel's took my breath away, and it's only a WIP.

jread Hey it's Clin... I mean Cat Eastwood! Nice gritty painterly style, you have here.

I was trying to come up with something different than a basic anthro character or a classic musketeer type Puss-in-boots. I was experiencing a sort of an artist-block, until I re-read the story and got inspired by the part where the Puss tricks the ogre into changing his form and then eating him. Shazam! Heavypuss-in-metalboots bites the head off a bat(ie. the ogre).

changed my concept a bit. now he's a hairless/fisherman cat with rubber boots. who uses his weapon as a scratching post or something... i'll probably have to stick with this one so that i can get something colored by the end of this week.

i'm going to have to rework his weapon and his hands though. and his face. and making his pose a little more dynamic probably wouldn't hurt either.

Hopefully will have some WIP's up tomorrow. For now, some comments:

jread-I really like the textures here. Nice atmosphere with the gritty desert environment.

daestwen- so cute! I love the playful attitude and the amazingly red boots

flimi- great rendering, although, maybe it's just me, but I see the cat more as male than female. Not sure what you could do to change it though.

dirkvandulmen - your original sketch was lovely, and the coloring lost much of its quality, especially due to all the dark patches. I don't know how you color, but check out this awesome tutorial by Matt Dixon (http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials_2/bird_catcher/bird_catcher_01.asp). I helped me a lot.

filmi - love it :) I'm not sure if it's the classic Puss in Boots, but it's crazy and amazingly rendered. I agree the rougher WIP render was lovely in its definition of form, but the final product is really nice as well.

Hey man, first off congrats on doing your first CHOW and welcome! I haven't been participating for long (haven't even had a CHOW through to polls yet) but I always like getting feedback, so here goes..

I like his facial expression, he looks wiley and a bit cheeky which fits in with the brief quite well, although possibly too good natured? I think the shading/lighting on his accessories seems to be more accentuated than what is on puss himself which makes them appear to have more volume than he does. There also doesn't appear to be a strong directional light source here making him look a bit flat. The ambient from-the-front lighting contributes to this. It's the contrast between light and dark that gives things the appearance of volume.

Pose wise I think he looks a little unnatural. It doesn't seem necessary for his fore-paws to be crossed for example. I find that quick small thumbnails to nail down a pose before developing it can often save hours of fiddling around to fix something afterwards... learned that the hard way of course..;)

Hope those are some useful crits for you...You should always be able to learn something new off everything you do.

:D

I actually prefer the first one... something in the angle makes it more convincing emotionally to me. The tough bar room boxer.
I think the middle is looking more like a bear than a cat... and the western theme has been done several times in this thread already.
The boxer is definitely the more original idea.

Well here is my current WIP.... I had been playing around with color and then it just sorta hit me. TOILE!
So yeah, use a little bit of the day job skills and make this look like a Toile fabric design. :D

Shannanigan - Nice :). your lines are really smooth and simple, but still very expressive. I also really like the fabric swatches to the right of your pic. Are those scans or did you create those digitally?

Thanks!

Those prints are just reference/inspiration I found for Toile fabric... unfortunately I can't claim them. I don't get to be that fancy at work since I'm designing prints to go on/in shoes... lots of plaids... and more plaids... *screams* :D

HendricVII- Good job :) My main critique is about the lighting. The large moon would logically be the main light source, however the character has no specific shadows and highlights to translate this.

He needs more shadows on his right side (our left) and brighter areas on the side towards the moon. Bear in mind that the shadowy side also would be less saturated, so the bright fushia belt would look a lot darker and 'grayer'.

Hope this helps :)

No update on my part yet. Been kinda busy.

Jeremy Hoffman Puss-in-Superboots-and-a-Cape! Grand idea. Love it.

Memper Very badass looking puss you got there. Your work shows what anthro art should be like. You should've kept the striped bagpants though. :)

Mickeymao I was thinking something like that myself, but I see you've taken the idea to the max, and looking good so far. Keep it up.

Dirkvandulme You're cat is probably my favorite of the classic Puss-in-boots depictions.

Arthur 'Two Sheds' At first glance I was thinking:"What the f**k?! Fat Phantom!" Then I realized that it was a fat guy ina cat suit and I gotta say I love it! Reminds me somewhat of a finnish comedy singer duo Bätmän and Ryydmän, who are also fat guys in tights. I'd change the color of the tights though(mostly just to avoid the Phantom association).

ianruff Glad you liked my metal puss. I'm liking your oriental cat very much as well as the toned down earthy color pallette. I don't think it looks like the tigress at all(at first glance I actually thought the Tigress in Kung-fu Panda was a dude, but apparently I was wrong). Waiting to see the finished piece.

Mr. P Show The fact that you do your sketches on paper towels shows that you are a true artist. :) Always holding a pen in hand.

UCT Beautiful looking picture. I like the classic fairytale illustration style you got and the color pallette. Remind me a bit of the works of a finnish illustrator legend Rudolf Koivu, for some reason.

sone_one I'd go with the first sketch with the upper angle and the boxer cat. Maybe make him more hunched over like in the second sketch.

KleeWyck One of my favorites this one. The hairless cat, the fish tattoo, the rubber boots, the hook tail. It all works so perfectly together.

Well they are supposed to be.... I found a pic of a "High Society" guy in hunting clothes and he had these really high brown leather spat boots on with a strap and buckle at the top to hold them up. I thought it looked pretty cool. But yeah its not really translating well, since I didn't color them dark they look like socks now.

I was sorta feeling that last night when I got done with the shading... so thanks for bringing it up, the little push I need to fix it. I don't wanna get "the boot" from the poll for improper footwear. LOL! ;)

Okay, might as well chip in since I have free time. I'm not sure what I have to say for me to show "process" but I guess I'll put my thoughts and my WIPs (including silhouette sketches).

When I read the Puss-in-Boots article, I was skeptical in believing about how he was able to do all of what he did alone. I also needed some sort of twist to the traditional portrayal of PiB without making it too outrageous.

I guess that's how I got to this stage. I saw PiB as the master of a guild he created and, somehow, the tales of PiB did not record the help of his animal friends :) . I mean, if a farm cat managed to wear boots and become a legend, I guess every other animal would work as well!

Critiques and comments for this WIP welcome; you all are doing great. By the way, if anybody knows the Chinese symbol for "Boot", I'll appreciate it. Right now, the flag says "Shoe Cat" :S I also realized ianruff did an asian PiB as well so I'm not sure if that's considered copying. Somebody say so if it's a "violation".

Just off the top of my head...
Shananigan - interesting and very nice, looks like a 19th century catalog image. BTW, I got that those are really boots.
Sekino - I absolutely LOVE the classic spin on that illo... beautiful! Same with you, UTC.
'Two Sheds' - that made me laugh! One crit, I think the division line between his pecs and beergut is too intense.

I originally wanted to do a Bluefoot-style "watercolor" but I started off with a cleaner flatting approach, and I think it fits.

Not quite sure where it'll end up, but here are the flats anyway.

right, so I already went and did an entry before I read all these posts, and some of the brief was clarified-

I i went for a totally anthrop andgle, like the charachter of "Puss In Boots" from the fairy tale as a human- will this be acceptable?

the brief did say "your own interpretation", it also said "design the cat" but could I interpret "cat" as an adjetive/coloquial term for a human?

Post it, benleon, so we can see what you mean. Technically, my character is human and I haven't heard any complaints yet . Having said that, I probably wouldn't have wanted to push the boundaries any further.

But I'm just guessing.

What say ye, Posh?

I would say post it, but I expect to see at least some reference to the fact that he is supposed to be a cat. I did say anthro was okay, and there was at least one fat man in a cat suit, but doing it completely human just isn't what the brief asks for. Yes, you'd get the 'boots' part, but where is the puss...?

There are many many human characters in boots!

This idea popped in my head last night, but I'm not sure I'm going to have time to finish before the deadline. I'll try though.

Also, I see I'm not the only one who thought of doing a pirate Puss. (Love the tiger concept, very cool.)

Old Tom Puss, the Cat of Nine Tales, was left to the sail mender's son when the old man died. Supposedly now on his ninth life (but he's not telling), this cat proved to be good luck for the boy, and when given his boots, a flag and a bottle of rum and milk, led the boy to fame and fortune on the high seas.

Some Errol Flynn and Jack Sparrow influences in there, I think. Also a bit of David Bowie (yum). I'll try to iron out any majorly referential kinks as I render. Hopefully.

great sketch, Tugelbend, but I'm havin' some difficulty finding much that's outright and specifically catlike about the figure. Only the face is vaguely non-human, and most of the features, though definitely animalistic, don't ring a feline bell very loudly for me. Without it being posted in this thread, I'd have a hard time seeing a definitive cat reference at all.

Here's my late WIP.

The idea behind my sketch came from the fact that a certain prominent artist community (that rhymes with Schmeviant Tart) has a lot of furry art on it. I'm not judgmental, but sexual drawings of human - animal hybrids strikes me as an interesting proclivity. I decided to poke fun at it. My first sketch portrayed a haggard and unsexy cat-human named Puss getting ready for a "show". I then decided a more realistically proportioned cat in a wig, knee high, flaming boots, and a bra on an obviously breast-less cat chest is funnier. Crits and comments are welcome.

I know its HORRIBLE!! I'll never make it through the weekend not drawing, but its gotta be like an 70/30 in favor of non-art stuff. Usually its 90% art. Which is why its all come down to this weekend. LOL!

Pseudocognition- Thanks! The markings are actually similar to my own cat, although she's got a smudge nose and her facial fur is more white. I liked the idea of making the markings resembled the shape of a pirate's coat. I love your Egyptian cat, and his/her gorgeous jewelry. Is it an Abyssinian cat?

skekTek-indeed! Your's is a really dashing pirate captain, while mine's a disreputable little scallywag... but pirate cats rock. Loving his hat and specialty boots and cocky expression.

My last update for today (and possibly for the weekend, as I'm off to Disney for a day or two). I speedpainted like mad to get it from sketch to this in less than a day. If I get a chance, I'll color it, but I'm liking the black and white well enough, too.

Puss in Boots,

Im not sure that Ive nailed the brief here, I wanted to put the charachter of puss in boots in human form, the old western style seemed appropriate. Instead of a millers son, it was the son of a burlesque house owner, and when the owner died and the business was lost he was left only with one faithfull working girl, and she would be "Puss in Boots".

I dont know if its appropriate, but it was fun doing at any rate, and I guess thats what matters.

Don't be afraid to dig in and get messy, you'll learn more if you mess up.
I say work on defining your edges and forms. The one thing that strikes me right off before anything else is its tail. I think if you made it so it doesn't bend so abruptly it may help to define what it is we're looking at. At first glance, the first thing I see is an animal balloon, but that could be more my problem than yours. ;) Maybe make it more "S" shaped, or flowing. Don't be afraid to make a mistake, you have nothing to lose.

Its got a definite Snake influence, hence eye patch and cigarette, just make him a space pirate and a lion and there ya go. Coloring style influenced by David Petersen, who does Mouse Guard.

I think I'm done. Hopefully it makes it to poll.
Good luck everyone, can't wait to see all your finished works.

Ostrander - Brilliant! Can't wait for the straight-to-BlueRay edition!

Hey, I don't know if anybody else is having a problem with the "thanks" button. I push it and it either logs me out or just doesn't register.

So THANKS to Arthur 'Two Sheds', Mercuralis and Pseudocognition.

PUSH THE BUTTON MAX!

I missed out on a lot, sorry guys for the late update.Excellent entries from all!:)
I initially planned to add more gear on Puss and add more the usual adventure, heroic type thingy but due to a recent accident my close friend suffered, he fell into a coma and this piece is now for him. A more somber yet hopeful pic i hope. Just like getting to the apple, I hope he finds his way back too.

Ah, sorry, Posh posted the old deadline. I just went and fixed it, this is the correct one:

MONDAY, MARCH 16th, 2009[/SIZE]
Deadline is Sunday, at 5:00 pm Eastern Standard Time (GMT -4).

Since Canada is now in daylight savings (or is done daylight savings, whatever) it's actually GMT -4.

So for germany, that means 10 pm on monday.

There are so many great entries so far, my boyfriend's already complaining about my "awwwww"s and "Uhhhhh"s *g*

I thought I had no time to compete, but as I feel so inspired and motivated this night, I had to make a quick sketch and a bit more... Maybe I have the time to finish it tomorrow :D (Well, today...)
