Hi guys !

I've been lurking for some time /years/eons, and I'd like to show some
of my sketches, WIPs and stuff.

Some newer works from my moleskine sketchbook from 2008/2009
and some digitally colored things I'd like to share.
Recently I've been trying to create my artwork without lineart directly
in PS, but I still have to learn a lot. Its not as crisp as my older stuff.
The Girls, yeah...a weak point. They look a bit shitty. I have to take
some classes again, I guess. :)

Wow, the thumbnails quickly become very cluttered due to the different sizes..hmm.

Another one. I called this "Blast Bug", its Starship Troopers /Warhammer 40k-
inspired (obviously). Blue Pencil and the colored version (fast and sloppy).

marcnail

Some futuristic suits and armor compilation.
The guy on the right looks a bit " Should I really stand like this ?"
(Yeah, bad posture..), but I like the details on his equipment.

marcnail

Its good to just scribble a lot, ideas flow more easily.
Sometimes the stuff is not that original, but you can reuse
bits and pieces of it later on. The "Prophet" dude is a bit
inspired by Clive Barker and his Hellraiser Universe.

your pencils are really good, not too sure about the girls proportions in the first post and I think some areas of their body need more darks in the skin to give more volume. Keep sharing id like to see more. :)

Exactly, the proportions are admittedly strange. I have to work on that.
Shading also. It looks too "2D" so to say. It does not pop out as much as
I wanted it.

you have some great stuff!
I realy like the guns in the first post, love the rifle on the botum left.
Dont wurry to much about the girls, some times it just takes time.
I know I whas frustrated a lot for a long time with anatomy.

Golem.

I struggled with this one a bit. I couldn't make him look interesting enough,
till I came up with the Gun-Arm and the red lights on him. Mean mofo.

Some WIP stuff, and the semi-finished state.

True. Its one of the most difficult things to do. Its always easier
to create thingys from your imagination than really make something
true to life (such as getting the anatomy straight), but I'll get there.

Some Manga-style girl I came up with, but never finished.
Never liked the Hairstyle, maybe I'll do something with it later on.
Its more or less a character sheet with my thoughts/notes on it.
Her character changes too much in the colored version, she looks a
bit too male for my taste. Oh well.:davi:

Here's an attempt at 3D. Some might argue, "thats not a sketch", but with
Mudbox, its really coming close to that. Here are some stages, before I
abandoned this little project. I did many tests, some Photoshop paintovers.

I gave this fella intentionally stubby and short legs, which should not be able to
support his frame, but i liked this disproportion very much. He almost looks a bit
dwarfish. I might add, that I absolutly suck at 3D modelling, the stuff I produce
in my spare time, is always so full of errors and mistakes, its crazy. But its cool
for concepting stuff in three dimensions quite fast.

Thx. I'm a bit partial on the posing of the characters though. The amount
of detail is ok, but their posture could be better. I'll try to incorporate
that in future character sketches.

Fantasy themed stuff. Sketches for a Golem (Stone Elemental) and scenery

Sketch Dump for today.

1) Ideas for Demons, Structure of their Heads, Horns and such.
2) More random Stuff, directly inspired by watching movies and games, almost like fanart. Nothing too original, just scribbling.
3) Leftovers from a abandoned vertical Scroller Shoot'Em Up, these were
to be scanned in and mirrored, in case anyone was wondering.

Pretty bad ass stuff in here dude, really digging your ideas. No real crits for ya, looks like you've got a nice handle on anatomy and your style in general, and it already looks like you're improving fast!
Maybe you could watch your proportions as far as head size to body size goes, maybe some more tones in your pencil work?

anyway, I'll be back around, keep it up!

Thanks, I know about the anatomy issues, but its really weird, sometimes I seem to get it right, then in the next sketch the old problems pop up again. Its lazyness I guess... work work...focus.

About the tones, yeah I'll see into that. Normally I just use the pencils as rough preliminary drawings for my color digitals, so they often lack shading.

Enjoying this thread. I like that batmobile. A tip, I think you should clean up the edges on your industrial drawings. Also the lines in your character are great, but you obscure them with your paint. Try to find some way of retaining the claraity of those details in the later stages and pick your values very carefully to illustrate the form.

Thats a good advice. I do tend to overdo the painting sometimes. I guess
after each coloring session I need to do another pass and make the final result "sharper" again.

The End of Days. Idea sketch.
Archangel Gabriel observes the northern hemisphere he just obliterated.
Just imagine that the angels of the old testament are real, but are actually
dormant alien insectoid bioweapons, who cleanse the earth every 65 Million years.
Their halos are high powered energy emitters which incinerate everything
in sight. Might make an interesting scifi-disaster movie. Not terribly orginal,
but delightfully unsettling.

I'm fascinated by post-apocalyptic settings at the moment.
Obviously inspired by the worlds of "Terminator" and "I am Legend".

I used some simple 3D Blocks for the layout of the city, and painted
details on top. The VTOL-Jets are just freehand. Just experimenting
with this technique right now.

Small Update and Comps of late 2009/early 2010 sketches.
Digital and traditional stuff. All sorts of media like ballpoint pen, marker,
fineliner or pure photoshop. I had plans to try the postapocalyptic "Crazy Mongo" as a 3D character, but I had no time for it.

You've been busy and I like what I see! However, one thing that really stuck out that I think you could modify is the way you tend to draw breasts on your female characters. First off, the women in your drawings usually have breasts that are not proportionate to their figure and secondly, the design of your breasts are little too round. They remind of fake titties (implants). Maybe this is just what you were going for but it's something that stuck out to me and seemed a little on the absurd side of things...

Good to see you being so busy! Keep them coming!

marcnail
March 6th, 2010, 08:59 AM
Well...the "Titty Problem"...
When I draw breasts more natural, they always appear saggy to me.
Not sure if thats a result of centuries of looking at "comic book-pornstar
heroines", but you're definetly right on the money. Gotta do some research
on that. Stay tuned.

Thanks guys. Always appreciated. :)

Allright, some quick fantasy-themed ballpoint sketches next:
Trolls were always a bit underrepresented in Fantasy, so

Mutants and otherwise malformed creatures are always my
favourite subjects. You can do a lot of sick stuff with them.

This was originally planned as some Wolfenstein-like supernatural Creature,
but I decided it works without the reference as well.

Wow you have a good eye for design! Some of your characters are looking a little on the generic side, but you have a pretty wonderful sense of detail and micro-composition within costumes. However your figures are lacking a lot of structure and balance, and some of your images are missing a sense of macro-composition. If you work on your anatomy and structure (probably drawing more form life would help :> ) and try to really study your compositions as you paint them, you could really be a winner of an artist! Keep going dude, I can't wait to see where you're heading!

Also the skull design on the horned overlord guy's arm in the sketch above is sick. I am a little jealous.

(Sculptris is that free 3D-Modelling Prog recently aquired by Pixologic).

Your sketches and lines are awesome, but to me your paintings need some work. I might suggest turning off any brush opacity in your paint program, and paint with 3 solid colors. Get that down and then blend them together, instead of using opacity.
