Big fan of your work so far. :) "The Offering" really stands out. Coloured pencil? Really? Very subtle, love the way you handled both the medium and the paper. Very nice.

Thanks JAX

I do use live models for some drawings, though none of what I've posted yet... Thus far reference is either photo's altered in sketch phase or manip'd in PS while constructing concept. I'll indicate in the future if a piece is drawn from life.

These are nice paintings, but watch out for head proportions. You tend to make your heads too big in a forehead area and small in the cranium/back of the scull area. In this image its very obvious
648077
It seems like you tend to place eyes at the centerline of the head like this
648078
Hence the big forehead.
Don't just copy what you see in reference, pay more attention to construction of the head as a solid 3D object. Check this tutorial out, maybe it will be of help http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14119

You are definitely at your best when painting beautiful women - your grasp of form is much more sure and purposeful in these pictures. It is also where you are most 'yourself'. Nothing to be ashamed of, I feel this way myself, so paint what you love.
I like the white, curled floating girl picture you posted early on a lot - Is it called 'Blush'?.
Thanks for posting!

Your paintings are quite well done, but there seem to be some very, very minute alignment/proportion issues in many of the faces. As an example, both of the noses in the paintings in post #99 seem to be a little off - in their angle, and with the nostrils. The first girl's eyes also seem so be slightly misaligned, like one eye is higher than the other.
May be a bit nitpicky of me...very nice work overall, though! :)

very beautiful rendering, very clean. really like the pics.
Would focus on the eyes a bit more, they seem to be a bit off here and there.
each eye looks correct on it's own but compared to each other there is a slightly different perspective or placement. Seen in a couple of your pics, that's why i mention it, tho i am sure you know it already.

cheers

eb_sculpt
July 31st, 2009, 04:25 PM
Very beautiful compositions. I see an inconsistency with the drawing between renders. Some look spot on and some look like the perspective is off. Not a slam, and I know it is a touchy subject, but do you trace your photo references? It's a dark little secret and I know most wont admit doing it, but most do. Hell, even Leonardo da Vinci used a camera obscura.

thomsontm
July 31st, 2009, 06:17 PM
Hey Eb. Thanks!. All drawings are freehanded. I'm not sure what you mean by "between renders"

eb_sculpt
August 6th, 2009, 10:30 AM
No disrespect, I believe your works are beautiful. I wish more portrait artists on this site would take heed and study your work. I have this dislike with portraits that attempt to simulate photographs (which I don't believe your work does). If the goal is to create a realistic portrait, please, support a photographer. What I meant about "between renders" one figure looks perfectly drawn, but than another figure (in a separate painting) looks slightly off (an inconsistency). So, I was curious if you trace some of your photo references as part of your process. Artists have been using different methods for centuries to capture correct form, so I have no ill thought on how artist achieve the end product. It is the end product that is judged, and no matter how you achieve your final master piece they are wonderful.

thomsontm
August 6th, 2009, 10:51 AM
None taken Eb. I imagine that is partially due to 1) Good Day, Bad Day Syndrome... or 2) Multiple References... Sometimes I'll use more than one source for my paintings and melding them can be somewhat challenging... however, Challenge is the name of the game and "Consistency" is a relative term when looking at an artists full body of work... I'm sure you'd agree. If art were effortless I doubt if it would be as intriguing...

Thanks again Eb... Your critiques strengthen my resolve!

AhkNemet
August 6th, 2009, 09:44 PM
I love how effortless you make these seem - some really beautiful stuff on the tinted pages, and I like to see how you do your process to finished image.
I didn't notice perspective issues - perhaps my lack of formal training has something to do with it lol but I also know that people as physical beings don't have absolutely symmetry, so I just found these to be really realistic.

Man- great paintings.

For your "Oil and charcol on canvas" pieces on page 4-5- how are you doing that? It looks like you are drawing on top of an oil ground and then painting on top of that- yes?

A few drawing inconsistencies here and there, mostly in the way the eyes sit within the skull, but otherwise pretty well done

So, I'm curious... do you do the drawing in Charcoal then paint over it... or do you lay down the paint then charcoal on top of that?

Either way it's an amazing effect.

I've used acrylic under charcoal and it has some nice effects but your's are much more vibrant which is why i am curious.

There is such a beautiful energy to your work that just captures women and their strength in their femininity so well.

Chris Bennett

I imagine that you are posting your paintings in order to get some kind of constructive feedback. In the spirit of this I'll step in:

Although there is much to enjoy about your paintings (the reason I look at your thread at all!), your sense of structure is a little unsteady - in nearly every one of your heads I feel there is only a generalised sense of the skull underneath. The same goes for the bodies. For instance, the last painting you have posted shows a hazy grasp of how the head sits on the neck and how the neck relates to the chest, which has nothing to do with 'sketchiness'. Brevity of handling should still exibit understanding. The axis of the nose to the forehead is unclear along with their respective volumetric relationship to the eye sockets and their connection to the cheekbones. The mouth has just been floated on and the same goes for her left ear which is crazily out etc etc.
The more one looks the more things come undone!
The hand, which must be so important since it is right out there in front is extremely flimsey - the structure of the palm to the fingers and the articulation of the bone and muscle is extremely sloppy for someone who has the ability to get it right.

You paint individual features very well - the nose is marvelously realised in the recent painting - but what I am trying to point out is that there is a wandering off of one form to another in much of your work here that is being concealed behind a surface flair. Ultimately this surface flair cannot compensate for the lack of real bite that is the result of not really coming to terms with the music of the structures that lie behind the surface, of getting to grips with the connectivity of things, the melody of forms, their relationship to one another and the sparks of poetry that are ignited thereof.

Your paintings are pretty.....but I am afraid I rarely find them beautiful.
It is within your powers to make them so, you have the skills, the eye and the work ethic, but in my opinion you have to start to look past surfaces.
Remember, painting can be thought of like women; the difference between a merely pretty girl and a beautiful one is a fine bone structure lying behind the beguiling flesh.

I hope you are not offended by my two cents, it is offered in the spirit of a fellow comrade in arms and with all due respect, believe me.

Thanks Konstruktion and Ikage.

Thank you, Chris, for your insight and frankness. The points you make and the manner in which you make them have been taken to heart.

One day, perhaps, I could achieve your level of rendering without sacrificing key elements such as edge quality, static composition and erroneous placement of body parts (lol).

-Again, your honest critique is appreciated.

-TMT

'Inkwell' and 'Twinkle Twinkle' show a massive leap forward!
'Inkwell' in particular has surmounted all those weaknesses in your work I itemised in my previous post in this thread. Not only that, the composition has greater dramatic meaning too. It's a real quantum leap forward and a thrill to see it happen. Bravo! A real treat to look at.
