Cool stuff so far, you should do a lot of studies and learn anatomy, tis a good place to start. I like the silhouettes, they have a cool atmosphere and mood about them. Just gotta define them and make them into cool characters and whatnot. As for making your figures pop, usually its all about the contrast, if your figures are grey and your background is grey theyre going to blend together, if you have light against dark it will generally make things pop more.

Thanks Wolfentir (I love the A.Rackham studies, the colours are definitely the same feel) I'll keep that contrast tip in mind. I just can't seem to get it right,
on nearly all of my pieces. Those quick animations are nice also.

Long time no post. But this is one of my latest roughs.
I think the gesture and renderings I'm starting to pick up on.
It took a quite a bit of time to get to this stage. 3hrs?:geekg:
But I'll get there.
[Take note, the image was web optimized so it's ONLY 224KB ... You're welcome 56K'ers :D)

i like the first draw that you have here..
maybe you could try adding some colors to your works in gray scale?, i think that it would be quite interesting to see the results =P!
if you are new with PShop.. you can change the "layer mode" to "multiply"(the layer that has your grayscale draw, and leave all the layers with colors below). there are more ways.. but i like this one :B
Best regards! and thanks for your comments! =)

-InCOUM: Thank you for the tip. Although having only found out the importance of values, and I kind of
understand the colour layer blending mode. I now add a layer on top of the grays, set it to 'color' blend mode, and
colour from there. I still do the multiply if it's just a line art. Cheers mate.

Hi Dwardo,
I came by to tell you how much I respect all of the critiques you do and I wanted to see your work. I dig it. Man, beware of Hogarth, I studied him and it took me ages to shake the bad drawing ticks out of my system. No one in real life looks like his figures. Also, he doesn't teach useful drawing procedures.
Go with Loomis man, he has the most solid drawing practices I have found.
Check this book out,
http://www.scribd.com/doc/10338/Andrew-Loomis-Successful-Drawing
and if you practice his processes, rather than just copying his drawings, I know you will see impressive improvement. I still study him. His revelations knock me out. Hey, I've learned much about digital work from visiting your sketchbook! Thanks man.

Bagg: Cheers mate, I love your sketchbook :P I might give posemaniacs a go.
I've seen it suggested a few times around here, it's just that, I need more than 30\60 to figure out my
poses :) I'm always touching my own muscles and bones while drawing, it seems almost in-appropriate.
Ed Cherniga:
No one in real life looks like his figures. Fail Ed, fail, I do look like that. It took
me a while to work out all the ice-cream fat, but o ye, I'm very happy.
Seriously your freakin lines and colours are crazy. I'm glad you joined, 'cause I've read a few genius bombs from
you that I never would've thought about.
Rgarding Hogarth, yeah, I agree, but his stylised poses are very good looking. His clavicles suck though :P
I've got Loomis on the hard drive, Jeno Barcsay "Anatomy for the Artist" and a few muscle magazines.
Mischeviouslittleelf: Thank you, I'm trying to do more, it's just, my anatomy sucks, and I'm left with
just a few poses that I feel comfortable with. I love profiles, but I've yet to get comfortable doing 3/4.
I'm not even going to mention the rest of the body. There's a lot of 'iffys' I have to make sure of.

Thank you for stopping by my sketchbook (F*** you ca.org for eating my posts)
Interesting work, and by interesting I'm talking about a definite style you have established in your work.
They say style is really about the mistake you consistently work, which I think should give you some food for thought, maybe in the long run it will be more beneficial to try to make things as realistic as possible, so that you can make better choices when you stylize.
I also find it interesting that you are a prime example of the way a painter sketches, in contrast to the way a drawer would dry.
Your best work is that in which you block in tonal areas, rather than describing the edges of plains with line.

HerrleerzeichenS: I love those soldiers too, I just can't remember what got me in that mood to draw them.
I can't get that feeling back. I've one in WIP (I'll post that some other time, once I get the feel of values) in the Critique. I hope you'll drop some input when you can. :)
Hamsta: Realistic, I'm trying to find my way there. I'm trying to read the history of art, but nothings sticking through, I just want to illustrate.
Your best work is that in which you block in tonal areas, rather than
describing the edges of plains with line.
Which one's :P 'cause they all look the same to me. I don't see them in terms of technique, but just the result.
(I should be more conscious to finding a style/workflow though. So far, I've just been making them with no thought).
Glebz: Cheers mate. I check out your sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=155478) too.

And the last step by step ... I'll post the next ones on de blog. [They take up too much room]
Hamsta
April 28th, 2009, 03:05 AM
The last collage of sketches is a good example of the 2 different styles. The dark soldiers with the tank is the painter's way, while the face in the middle is the drawer's way.
The two on the right combine both styles, but are closer to the painter, while the bottom left is both but closer to the drawing.
There are different ways to get closer to realism, some might work for you while others might not. In my case, you won't see me holding a pencil in front of my eye and measuring proportions, I will however construct figures from tubes and blocks, and try to nail the negative spaces.

You can combine both of course, but people will tend to start with one or the other.

Bri Bri: Post #60 in your sb really has given me eyes. Literally. It helps hugely in specific brainstorming.
Instead of relying on pure texture & random blotches, it still helps giving clues as to what I want to be finding.
edit: How did I get it looking natural. Skill mate, skill. Hehehe. Soft round @ 10% exposure. Dodge and burn. It feels like spray painting. NO fumes. Bonus.
AmbientSounds: mwah mwah.
I strongly suggest trying a quick digital pic, or better yet, a watercolour brush stroke, from your own rhythm and flow.
Kick started in your brain, transferred into motion through your panzy wrist, through the brush and on to the canvas.
I find it really fun. It helps after each section of real life studies. (At least for me)
PS Ambient.
In your sb, BubbaGump post #52, I think he un-intentionally referred to your self portraits bland.
You're not bland Ambient. You're Texas. teeehehehe.

(I suggest we take your painterly method. You give me a stain, I draw something over it, shove it over to you, you paint further, give it to me etc etc.
but give me a week or so, I have a ton to do for school aaand I just come back from the most inspiring journey ever.. and.. I lack time but a 2 or 3 hour collab would be alright. note me.

Squint your eyes! Looks for the big shadows. In that last portrait you seem to have gone for the details too quick. You should work on figuring out planer structure to give it a greater feel of depth.
I like the technique for the donut belly illustration. I could see it in some sort of editorial work about eating disorders or something. The one thing that bothers me is that I didn't catch on that it was a donut immediately.
I'm not even going to bother critiquing you on the typography XD

Mighty Dwardo, How are you man? The stuff is looking good. Some people say it is best to compartmentalize the various aspects of drawing and painting, but I disagree. I find that method to be exclusive and when I desire to gain knowledge, I need to be inclusive in my approach. Drawing improves painting and painting helps drawing. I strive to learn it all at the same time. Each discipline teaches me about and strengthens my knowledge of the other disciplines.

Hamsta: What's wrong with the typography?:P I really didn't want the text to overpower the raw feelings of the whole piece, which was the loss of a hot jam donut into my belly.:P It was her eyes that I was focusing on, which now looks like cataracts :P, but thank you for reminding me of the planars.
sandeepbarot:Thank you. :)
Mr Cherniga: I'm mighty in being able to bench press 500 sandwiches into my mouth, but when it comes to the pens and pencils,

[I'll check on your updates] I also agree bouncing around with learning the art subjects, though for myself, I just feel like the basics aren't really there, like seriously missing. wow, you had something worked out with them? I totally expected that we do them together by.. hey, just read my post again XD
Skintones:
when you have problems with them, how about a study? Sargent? Caravaggio? try to repaint a picture.
Face color is complex, the trick is to go wild
-color zones of the face, google them.
-places that stand out are naturally more burned by the sun
-bloodvessels and skinthickness are differently distributed, bringing different colors to different places (red cheeks, cooler skintone under the eyes)
Mebiusu

If in doubt, create some color cubes {see the beginning of Loomis’ chapter on color in Creative Illustration} to experiment with and determine what palette you will use. I find it is best to plan these things before diving into the final art.
My basic palette- 1.Titanium white 2.Cadmium Red Light
3.Cadmium Yellow Medium 4.Yellow Ochre
5. Burnt Sienna
6. Burnt Umber
7. Ultramarine Blue. 8. Alizarin Crimson 9.Prussian blue 10.Raw sienna 11.Naples Yellow
Be aware of the main concerns, what is the hue, chroma, value and is it warm or cool?
Color occurs on the edge of light. Use the most pure colors there. The application of white does not create vivid color, use it sparingly, or it will create a chalky look to the skin tone. Halftone is the bridge between the areas of light and dark. You will find most textures occur in the areas from the edge of light to the beginning of half tone and are most vivid there.
Where bone structures come to surface despite the muscle volumes, the color is more pronounced, like toes, fingers, the face, knees or ankles.
Human skin is translucent. Translucency is especially noticeable in infants and the elderly. Pay attention to light passing through the skin of ears and finger edges.
Human skin is reflective. Clothing and surrounding objects can cast a glow onto skin, so observe your subject carefully.

Skintones... My watercolor teacher taught us a trick, which would need some translating into other media. Might be worth it.
You start out with blue! That gives the skin the cool colors which will keep it from becoming too yellow. Into that blue you mix yellow than red, and let it dry. You can then darken things by coming in with the browns.

Hello, amazing stuff here I cant wait to see what you'll be like when you finish your studies.
I am not sure if you figured out what was wrong with the knee in post 8, but I think the problem is that the femur or the thigh bone projects out to the side but the foot and shin face forward.
This causes the tibula and fibula to twist, especially at the knee which is very unconformable. because the knee bares weight it isint very flexible so the foot tends to point the same way as the knee. I made a few sketches about it, but I did'nt want to post it in your sketchbook without asking. As I am sure you know standing up and assuming the pose yourself is the best way to see if its comfortable. Anyway good luck with you studies.

Nice studies and good to see so many in a short time. You seem to be loose in your sketches, rendering is going well too. But, you can be a little bit more daring with colours; using darker darks, complementary colours and brighter highlights, sharp edges, Bob Ross.
Enjoy!

Radost: Thank you for answering my question. I forgot I asked that
in your sb. Sorry. I'll look forward to being bald, I mean bold with colours.
But right now, I'm still starting off. Complementary colours is new to me.
That's how native I am. Thank you for the pointers.
[Googles 'Bob Ross'] Buahahaha. His hair looks fun. Will have to look him up more. Thank you for the lead.
Strela: Thank you so much. I've been trying to line those two, but I can't pull it off yet, it loses it's appeal at least in my eyes.
I just wanted their motion to be the focus. A glint perhaps from the eyes, but their 'Scrambling' to give aid is the important thing.
The backpacks are enlarged to give a sense of the weight they carry, and when your brothers need help, as in real life, that instinctively becomes secondary.
I've got two brothers, one younger and one older. We're scrambling to help my older brother. He's a troublemaker. kahahaha.
I've given posemaniacs a go, and it's a no no. :P I just find them too rigid. The muscle tension are missing, & to be honest, I kind of like flexing in front of the mirror.
They're great for quick gestures though, which is probably what's its main purpose, and I'm asking too much, and I should shut up. :)

Great stuff. My favorite one is the first one on the first page-- the troopers trudging through snow. Great mood on that piece. Also your line sketches of military guys, and your environments-- great sketchy style there.
Not that I'm any kind of Mentler or anything but I think you might get good mileage out of doing large numbers of 30 second sketches-- check out posemaniacs.com for an interesting timed java app to do lots of fast studies from. And no I'm not affiliated with them, I just read about it here and started using it. Doing lots of fast sketches has helped my figure skills immensely already.

Thanks for the comment in the sketchbook! Nice improvement here mate! It's definatley showing. Liking the Rorscharch-test-esque plate method, apparently this type of shape interpretation can give an insight into the personaltity of the person interpreting it. Painter with paper texture on these "chalks?" too obviously digital. Girl works the best, the others have anatomical mistakes that are too obvious. The guy looking over his shoulder doesn't appear to have a neck, face is weird. Build these up. i.e. start the head as sphere, add the mask of the face, divide it into the eye, mouth, chin line, and continue elaborating.

oooops. in PS CS3 [I'm sure 2 has it] in brush settings. Set angle jitter to pen pressure, or rotation if with an artpen. Pen pressure is the easiest to control in my end.
Note: Giant steps did get some erasing done on it to get her body out. :) edit: Large print? Idea, perhaps I can uprez and fix some details. Thank you hala. :)
[Random personal peeve drop: Why does Wacom insist on making me buy an Art Pen for every freaking version? Int4 I can understand, double the pressure, but the other versions, c'mon, isn't it just code.]
Anywaaay.... yep.

Loving the latest batch of sketches. Took me a while to figure out why you called it giant steps, and while I see the elephant, I can't tell what the other mass is (if anything) but the color combinations and the blocked in form work well.
Western rail is also quite nice as a little color study (actual size?) with a good feel of atmospheric perspective, and a definite mood (makes me sad :( )
Birds are real characters, chubby little things. Heh, even the pieced together scan seems to have some meaning behind it ;)

The muffin top IS the best part (30 rock?) I would totally go around to every continental hotel breakfast in town and take their muffin tops... if I had less to do. I guess school saves me from going to jail sometimes.
And yeah, liking the atmosphere for your turtle-house. Enviros are hard and you seem to be brushing up nicely on em. (give the house a tail!)
Awesome that you're collabbing on a short film, good luck with that
Edit: the more I look, the more it seems like in better days, that building would have had a nice little park plopped down on its roof, but the lack of it makes it seem... maybe lonely? cool

ooooowwww ... the tree right? It makes it look like a tiny normal sized house. Gaahh.
I was thinking more a Camphor tree. It was suppose to be a space ship, and they're aliens that have been living here for almost a century. 'could be vampires I guess.
The ground has cleared and the ship was suppose to be white but has turned mossy. Blah blah, I should just be re-working it.
hala:Turtle it might be, I had white on it though. Maybe a gene transition.
Lindsee:Right on the button. It was in central park all along. :)
30 Rock? I love Tina Fey, but no, it was in grade 2. I knew then, what I know now. Milk? :P And when you do decide to B&B Aussie, call me, I have running shoes too. The cops here are slow and layed back, they won't do anything.

I like the scimitar wielding guy, good sense of action and feels like he has mass. White little detail there is in the background looks accurate to the area.
I'd like to see details in the hands and the scimitars blade, and some dust from his feet could be cool.
I think the silhouettes are also interesting, I like how the guy's sword (bow?) cuts his profile with a white swath, and how dramatic the light is falling from the back. His face is too small, though, and he needs more shoulder.
The arm below the elbow is too thick on the other hand.
The other guy, not sure about what's going on in the front, where I assume his right arm is, and I think more light would fall on his chin area.

I don't get how those connections/cable/walk ways can be possible.
As it recedes, shouldn't the size decrease also, or was it on purpose? (An illusion?)

CHOW II final entries (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=167193).
A huge learning month, with all the teams contributing to some great motivation and inspiration.
First up was my good anito.
The anitos were first borne out of the 'A' section of an old book on Asian Mythology, the page
preposterously ripped out by a dude named Edward, and used as a bookmark while researching for Team CHOW II -
he left it within the pages of 'Classical Mythology' by William Hansen. (ISBN 0-19-530035-1)
In time (0-4 days) they developed and learnt to live within the Greek and Roman mythology stories.
768492
Second character was a minotaur I named Minotaur-ED.
Gender: Male
Race: Unknown, but he looks Filipino
Class: Rogue Ranger
Alignment: Good (sometimes)
Minotaur-ED likes to take things apart and put them together.
He likes to Wacom and occasionally play around with dangerous rusty looking weapons.
Siding with the humans because he likes a good challenge. He's very eager to take
on the warmonger half Minotaur on the other side of the mountains.
768494
and thirdly, my last character was another minotaur. Luscious. :P
Luscious
Gender: Male
Race: Half Baywatch hair and half Slow-motion
Class: Warmonger
Alignment: Evil
Luscious just likes a good fight. Old rusty weapons, a favourite.
He doesn't like his extremely pale greenish skin, and salvates at the day when he'll have
that perfect tan. [Never gonna happen].

Amazing stuff as always, I really like the runner. How the leading edge is nice and crisp and the far edge is blurred just right, the nose and the face is a hair flat though, maybey a little more curve and overlap. Cedarseed has a simplified guide to anatomy that can help for a quick reminder http://cedarseed.deviantart.com/art/Big-Guide-to-Drawing-the-Body-15014442.
You probably did it on purpose, but the values of the color stuff is a lot different than the greyscale, theirs a nice check you can do if you take a layer of all grey and set it to hue to check the values. http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=771080&stc=1&d=1252210764
Also with color Ive found color temperature to be very helpful for predicting the hue shifts with value, http://idrawgirls.blogspot.com/2008/07/art-tutorial-color-temperature-warm-vs.html .
The minotar also really cool the anatomy and perspective is great and I love the simple composition and green monochrome of the inks too.
Definitely want to see that light wave animation too. Keep up the awesomeness.

Nice to see another comment from you in my dsb, thanks for dropping by.
A lot has changed here since my last comment (I've been lurking though ;) )
Good to see you are trying out all sorts of different media, and working on all sorts of subjects.
Since it's hard to give a good critique on such a big body of work, I'll concentrate on the latest.
The fish works the best. The wine bottle and glass also work well as silhouettes, but they are such an easily recognizable shape, it's almost a no-brainer.
It bothers me that they aren't on the same level.
I'm not even sure what the upper shapes are. Some sort of fruit and a croissant? Push the contrast, keeping in mind that the areas in which you have the most contrast will push forward, while less contrasting, less saturated areas will recede.
The fish is a little backwards in that respect, as that shiny spot on it's tail jumps forward.
